ganic fertilizer instead of commercial fertilizer. Pow Wow Wild Berry was also chosen as an All-America Selections winner in 2010. Tumbling Tom tomatoes are a great choice for the patio and hanging baskets. It’s easy to see why these are 2014 Mississippi Medallion winners. The plants have a compact, trailing growth habit and look fantastic with their delicious, cherry-type tomatoes cascading over the edge of a container or window box. Tumbling Tom tomatoes come in both bright red and sunny yellow. For the best tomato production, keep moisture consistent in the container. This is good advice for growing any tomatoes, either in the ground or in large containers. Fertilize frequently. I like using the water-soluble fertilizers formulated just for tomatoes, which allows them to produce enough leaf growth to

support abundant fruit harvests. The Rabbiteye blueberry is a great 2014 Mississippi Medallion selection. Not only do you get delicious fruit in the early summer, but this plant also has great foliage color. The foliage is bright blue-green in the summer, and it colors up with nice reds and oranges in the fall. Rabbiteye blueberry requires cross-pollination for the maximum fruit set, so plant two or three different varieties. Select early-, medium- and late-season bearing varieties to prolong the fruit and your enjoyment. For the best growth, Rabbiteye blueberries need consistent soil moisture and benefit from a thick layer of organic mulch. Keep the soil pH in the 4.5 to 5.5 range and feed with acid-forming fertilizers like those formulated for azalea or camellia. Early-season varieties include Austin, with moderately vigorous, large blueberries; Bright-

well, with vigorous, medium blueberries; Climax, with large, medium-dark blueberries; and Premier, a vigorous plant with disease resistance and large, flavorful fruit. Mid- to late-season varieties include Tifblue, a vigorous plant, possibly the most productive, with light-blue fruit; Powderblue, a vigorous, disease-resistant and productive selection; Centurion, a vigorous plant with dark-blue fruit that ripens later, adding one or more weeks to the season; and Baldwin, a productive, late-ripening, dark-blue fruit well adapted to backyard plantings. These and other varieties are available in the nursery industry.

TUPELO – The thought of buying your first home can be frightening, but with a few tips from some pros, the process can be quite simple. The first thing you need to do is get pre-approval from your bank. “Buyers need to know what they can afford,” said Jenny Decker, an agent with Tommy Morgan Realtors. “It doesn’t take long and sometimes you can even do it on the phone. Closing costs are typically 3 to 4 percent of the price of the home, she said, and are paid at the time of the closing, which is usually about 30 days from the time the contract is signed. “This is a great time for people to buy a house,” Decker said. “The inventory is large and interest rates are low. If you get to a point where you really like two houses and can’t decide which one to make an offer on, start comparing things. Look at the roof. Chalk Paint In his book on style, Canadian Robert Bringhurst advises, "By all means break the rules, and break them beautifully, deliberately and well. That is one of the ends for which they exist." I am mystified how Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint breaks every rule I’ve learned about painting. It completely trashes the old paint rules, and yet it still works beautifully. “Old school” paint rules: Prep your surface by removing oils and wax, sand and wipe clean. Apply primer and let it dry for four-plus hours. Paint a thin first coat and STEPHEN THOMPSON let it dry four-plus hours. Apply second thin coat and let cure 24plus hours before handling. “New school” paint rules: No prepwork! Apply a thick coat of Chalk Paint. If an accent color or second coat is desired, wait 20 to 30 minutes to paint. Clear wax and if desired, distress a few areas with sandpaper. Dark wax and buff to a smooth, soft satin finish. Boom, you’re done! Bev Crossen at the FarmHouse in downtown Tupelo sells Chalk Paint and holds weekly painting classes. Bev says people like using it because “it allows big projects – like painting an armoire – to be finished in a day. It paints anything with no priming and no sanding, so you can paint, clear wax, distress, dark wax almost anything all in just three hours.” I’m impressed because the paint is non-toxic, has little to no odor and its water clean-up makes it perfect for painting inside, even in wintertime. Bev tells me it’s a natural on nursery furniture and lets young mothers easily change colors with different babies. Leigh Ann McGonagill of the Rusty Cat in Amory once worked for Sherwin-Williams. Leigh Ann says this about Chalk Paint: “When you’ve been trained as we were to prime surfaces, it’s hard to believe it will grab – but it does. In our shop we’ve painted lamps, concrete, wood. Amazingly, it stays on. It works even over varnish with no primer. Where old

latex paints would not stick and roll off, this paint cures fast and sticks, it stays put, it just stays put.” Unlike conventional paints, Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint sticks to most all surfaces – wood, concrete, metal, fabric, plastic, terra-cotta – and can be used inside and outside your home. Prepwork is rarely necessary. It dries quickly, so if you want multiple colors on the same surface, you can paint a second or third color quickly, and start enjoying your revitalized furniture, cabinets, walls, floors and ceilings immediately. Whether you’re a DIY type person on a budget who wants to de-grannyfy an inherited heirloom or you are a professional up-cycler rescuing ageworn antiques from garage or estate sales, you should definitely give Chalk Paint a try. Chalk Paint is a unique decorative paint developed by Annie Sloan in 30 decorative and historical colors. See them all at the FarmHouse in Tupelo and online at anniesloan.com. DAILY JOURNAL

Refresh and renew

BY GINNA PARSONS DAILY JOURNAL

STARKVILLE – The idea of spring cleaning can be a daunting one, especially if you think you have to do everything in one day or one weekend. But if you break those chores into chunks – whether five-minute chunks or 45-minute chunks – the goal seems much more attainable.

“Some people think, ‘If I can’t do it all, I don’t want to even get started,’” said Bobbie Shaffett, state specialist for Family Resource Management and Housing at Mississippi State University in Starkville. “If you’ve got a big job, like cleaning out a closet, set a timer for maybe 45 minutes. When that timer goes off, take a break. Taking breaks helps.” She also suggests start-

ing small. “Go through one drawer, clean one shelf at a time,” she said. Shaffett notes that lot of people resist thorough house cleanings because of clutter – clutter that accumulates every day and overwhelms us. She suggests five rules to help cut down on clutter. 1. FOLLOW THE 30-SECOND RULE. If it takes 30 seconds or less to do, do it now. An

example would be cleaning trash out of your car at the end of the day. 2. PRACTICE THE FIVEMINUTE MAXIM. Think of how many things you can do in five minutes: sew on a button; clean the toilet, tub or sink; empty the dishwasher. In Shaffett’s home, her family practices the five-minute maxim every night before bedtime. They put toys, games and books away, makes

sure dishes are out of the sink and items are picked up off the floor. “It makes a big difference when you get up the next day,” she said. 3. ASSIGN A HOME FOR EVERYTHING. Most clutter exists because it doesn’t have a home. Don’t just stash stuff. You may not be able to find it again. 4. GET RID OF THE OLD when you get something new. For every new item of clothing you purchase, throw away or give away one or two pieces. If there’s a sentimental item in your closet, like a Girl Scout uniform, don’t save the whole uniform – just keep a badge. If you have an old worn-out heirloom quilt, just cut a square from it and have it framed. 5. KNOW WHEN CLUTTER IS OUT OF CONTROL. At this point, go into a room or a

closet with four boxes or bags: one for trash; one for items to donate or sell; one for items to store; one for items that belong somewhere else in your home. Then set the timer and do not leave the room until the project is done. If you can’t decide what to do with an item, put it in a storage box and date it. In a year, after four full seasons, if you haven’t needed the item, get rid of it. Shaffett also suggests making a list when it comes to daily, weekly and monthly chores as well as spring cleaning. “Check off things and have a deadline for each one,” she said. “Prioritize the list. That way, if you run out of time, you have the most important things done.” ginna.parsons@journalinc.com

Choosing an exterior color scheme for the home can make an important difference in the aesthetic quality.

How color affects your exterior home makeover BRANDPOINT

How do you know you’ve chosen the right colors to accent your home’s exterior? What colors on windows, doors, trim or shutters can highlight architectural details? Try these tips to help choose an exterior color scheme for your home. • Accent your home’s style. Consider your home’s design. Blend existing features, like the roof, stone or brickwork, into a cohesive look. For modern homes, earthy neutrals complement contrast-

ing sharp lines and the shine of glass and steel. Soft hues, like variations of pastel blue, white, beige or green complement country cottage-styled aesthetics. If you live in an historic home or neighborhood, check with local officials for appropriate colors for your region and your home’s architecture. • Consider curb appeal. When choosing a new exterior color palette, consider how it will look next to neighboring homes, or blend with your homeowner’s association guidelines or other local require-

ments. If most homes in your neighborhood convey a monochromatic look, consider colors that complement it. Add a boldly painted front door or contrasting window or door trim to help your home stand out without sticking out. Bold red doors instantly add curb appeal. Before painting exterior doors, consult a professional and choose a paint or finish with good blocking resistance. • Test color on small sample first. Sometimes testing the color on your home or its doors can

help. If you are torn between options, test paint samples on a small area where colors will converge on your house. If you’re thinking about repainting, residing or remodeling your home, it’s also a good time to replace windows and doors. Once you’ve picked the base color for your home, add coordinating or contrasting window and door trim. 2014 home exterior color trends range from bold to subdued. For design inspiration, consider the latest exterior color trends:

• 1. Overall exterior colors, including creams, whites, shades of gray and neutral pastels like sky blue, provide a unique but simple style that is reflective of the homeowner’s individual tastes. • 2. Trim colors are going to be seen on both ends of the spectrum with neutral pastels or bold, dark statement colors. • 3. Boldly painted doors in a vibrant blue, deep red or edgy black add instant interest and curb appeal. Choose a color that best represents your individual design personality.

Tips to green your home and garden this season to your yard trimmings. Composting creates a natural fertilizer that’s makes a planet-friendly alternative to the chemical variety. By recycling and composting, you can join the ranks of Americans reducing the waste they send to the landfill. In fact, recycling and composting prevented 86.9 million tons of materials from being disposed in 2011 in the United States, up from 15 million tons in 1980, according to government estimates.

STATEPOINT

Going green at home doesn’t have to turn your life upside down. There are simple measures you can take in your kitchen and garden to run a planet-friendly home.

REDUCE WASTE

Ensure your kitchen is properly outfitted with labeled paper and plastic recycling bins. Keep these receptacles handy to encourage your family and guests to make use of them. PROTECT WILDLIFE Take your waste reduction a You may think of your yard as step further by setting up a bin for “yours,” but you are actually food scraps, which you can add sharing the space with furry

creatures, insects and birds. Habitat destruction and loss, as well other manmade and natural threats, put beautiful species like humming birds at risk. Make your garden a safe haven with bird feeders and by planting native, sustentative shrubs, trees and flowers. Unfortunately, bird-to-building collisions, particularly with windows, are estimated to kill between 100 million and 1 billion birds in the United States alone, according to a new report from the Cooper Ornithological Society. Ensure the safety of your airborne visitors by applying staticcling decals to your windows,

which helps birds detect glass, thereby avoiding injury or death. Decals from WindowAlert, for example, rely on special ultraviolet-reflecting coating that looks like etched glass to humans, but is quite visible to birds, and add a decorative appearance to your home. The coating can fade over time, so remember to replace decals every six to nine months. More information can be found at www.WindowAlert.com.

EAT LOCAL

Source your food locally to reduce your carbon footprint. If possible, buy local, in-season

fruits and vegetables that didn’t have to travel the world to reach your plate. And while flowers are beautiful to look at – and the right ones can provide nectar for pollinating insects and birds – consider turning at least part of your garden into a space for herbs and vegetables to grow. When dinner comes from your own back yard, it means fresher produce that’s good for your family, and good for the planet. Don’t just enjoy nature this season, take care of it. With a few small tweaks, it isn’t hard to run your home more sustainably.

a cleaning cycle. Use ventilation fans and dehumidifiers to minimize condensation and help reduce humidity in the home. • If your windows have major air leaks, don’t close properly or are failing to act as a solid barrier to the environment, then it’s time to replace them. Opt for vinyl window frames which won’t provide an organic food source for mold. • Keep window frame surfaces clean. Even if tiny particles of organic debris are found on or around the surfaces of a vinyl window in a moisture-rich area, you could potentially find mold growth. What makes up this debris? It can be anything from fragments of pollen to animal dander to insect pieces to normal household dust. • Reduce the chance of condensation in your home. Use ceiling fans, particularly in the

STATEPOINT

What’s growing on your windows? If you have wood windows, or even dirty window sills, the answer could be mold. When materials in the home, such as wood window frames or wood window sills, come in contact with moisture for an extended period of time, mold can grow. And mold growth can be hazardous to your health, causing respiratory problems and allergic reactions. So how do you reduce your home’s risk for mold? • You may see your windows “sweat” during the winter or summer months because of varying humidity levels inside the home. Without proper ventilation, moisture can accumulate on windows and walls from daily household activities such as hot showers, boiling water and opening dishwashers after

kitchen and bathroom to increase ventilation. Leave interior room and closet doors open. Consider reducing the number of house plants in your home. • If your blinds or window coverings are closed all the time, condensation can get “trapped” in between the window treatments and the windows, creating a damp environment that may encourage mold growth. Routinely open window coverings to increase ventilation near windows. Additionally, ensure air vent deflectors are placed on floor vents to reroute air into the room rather than straight up against a window. While installing vinyl windows in the home is a smart start, homeowners also have to do their part – keep the home well ventilated and clean during all seasons to reduce mold.

When marketing your home for sale, remember not to neglect the garage area. It is the part of the house that often times is the storage place for items that are no longer used, or items that we are keeping until we decide whether or not to throw them out; it is the area where accepted cobwebs and trash collect. 1) “Declutter/Organize; 2) Clean walls (painting may be necessary); 3) Clean floors (remove the marks and any stains); 4) Clean garage door (inside and out); 5) Buy a new door mat to place at entry to house from garage; 6) “De-bug” lighting fixtures and make sure all bulbs are in good working order.
