The $75 Challenge

The Daily Journal challenged three Northeast Mississippi stores to put together must-have outfits for $75 or less. The Corner Shoe Store and Era 1932, both in Tupelo, and Ella Ivy in Pontotoc, put together three fashion-forward looks that won’t break the bank.

ELLA IVY

ERA 1932

THE CORNER SHOE STORE

THE OUTFIT: Savannah Rae Aztec print spaghetti strap tank with fringe, $60; embellished flower headband, $12.

THE OUTFIT: Under skies dress with geometric embroidery, $44.99, geometric dangling AB Jewels earrings $24.99, arrow bracelet $5

THE OUTFIT: Geometric and paisley Flying Tomato jumpsuit, $40.95; Mississippi statement necklace, $18.95; beaded penny bracelet, $14.95.

TOTAL: $72

TOTAL: $74.98

TOTAL: $74.85

THE SCOOP: This tank gives the cut-off shorts in your closet style when you don’t want to get dressed up.

THE SCOOP: Cute little summer dresses are a key piece for this season.

WHAT TO ADD: Pull out a statement necklace and some bangles to complete the look. The outfit would look great with booties, flats or sandals.

ake it easy – but have some fun – with kids’ fashion this spring. Outfits that are colorful but easy-to-wear are what’s in style for children. “It’s light, floral and airy,” said Deanna Russell, owner of Silly Simpson’s in Tupelo. “The colors are pretty.” Mix-matched patterns are still in style, but it’s not as loud as in past seasons. There are fewer patterns, or they’re contained to a smaller part of the outfit, Russell said. Chevron, polka dots and florals are the patterns to look for in spring outfits. Ruffles are a must for young girls, said Kim Huddleston at Flutter & Co. in Pontotoc. Ruffles, especially lace ruffles, are on many outfits at both Silly Simpson’s and Flutter & Co. Pink is the hot color for the season, said Jill Hart at Reed’s Department Store in Tupelo. Coral is also big at Silly Simpson’s, and aquas and teals are popular at Flutter & Co. and Silly Simpson’s. Spring calls for fun, feminine dresses, which are flying off the rack’s at Reed’s and Silly Simpson’s. Headbands are coming back into style, Russell said. Many clothing companies are even including matching headbands with their outfits. Boys’ fashions are simple and comfortable, said Huddleston. John Johns and cute matching T-shirt-and-shorts sets are easy-to-wear options. Keep an eye out for outfits in blues and greens, as well as plaid shorts.

Bright colors, fun patterns and a bit of lace are all in for girls this spring, and this one outfit has it all. Autumn Swinney, 7, is wearing a Mis Tee Vee Us yellow floral dress with green striped leggings. The lace on the leggings and pink headband are the icing on the cake. This outfit is from Silly Simpson’s in Tupelo.

This outfit is a step up from casual, but it’s still easygoing. The Fore orange striped shirt pairs well with blue shorts, and khaki-colored Sanuk shoes match just about anything. Andrew Agnew, 4, wears this outfit from Reed’s in Tupelo.

his spring, fashion is full of contrasts. Women can opt for sweet pastels or bold neons. There are demure sheath dresses or bold takes on the little black dress in perforated leather and animal prints. Outfits incorporate sweet lace or bold geometric patterns. “There’s lots of contrasting colors,” said Dale Simmons of Reed’s Department stores. The pastels are lead by minty green and lavender. The neons are dominated by corals, pinks and yellows. But the classic black and white are in full bloom, too. The classic spring fabrics of linen, gauze, silk and lightweight knits are out in full force, but there are some surprising additions. You wouldn’t think of leather being a spring fabric, but the perforated leather isn’t heavy, said Joy Whittle of Southern Roots. “It’s thin, and it’s lined,” so it’s very comfortable as the weather gets warmer, she said. The jumpsuit has gotten a modern makeover, said Hayley Gholston of Blonde Pistol boutique in Baldwyn. “You could wear that to a wedding,” Gholston said. “It gives you a different look for dressy occasions. Wide leg pants in silky fabrics are incorporating fun prints. They prove the point that women don’t have to be uncomfortable to look great. “It’s just like wearing pajamas,” Whittle said. “It’s awesome.” In addition to the sheath dress, other classic looks are taking the spotlight. “This year there’s a resurgence in good-looking pants suits,” Simmons said.

s spring arrives, retailers are introducing their warm-weather lines with color and comfort in mind. Over at MLM Clothiers, owner Jimmy Long said he’s seen a rise in trimmer-cut suits and sportcoats. Sportcoats in particular, he said, are becoming a popular choice to pair with a colorful pair of pants or designer jeans. “We’re still upscale and pretty traditional,” Long said. “We’re not going overboard, but the big thing this year is color.” Lines like True Grit, Peter Millar and Southern Tide, offer soft, durable comfort in a range of pastel and flourescent tones. “It’s funny, lots of our pima-cotton shorts are solid colors this year because with all the color, you need something to anchor it,” he said. “And this year we have the prettiest collection of neckwear I’ve ever seen.” Jack Reed Jr., owner of Reed’s Department Store in Tupelo, said many of this year’s Tshirt lines sport washed, muted colors, and are often 100 percent cotton. So do the massively popular spirit jerseys, which read “Hail State” or “Hoddy Toddy” across the back shoulders, depending on your allegiance. “We’re seeing a lot of very relaxed sportswear,” said Reed. Light-weight fishing shirts from Columbia stock the racks, and sport T-shirts by Southern Lab have been big sellers according to Reed.

SPRING FASHION

Reed’s also offers sunglasses from Ray Ban and Costa del Mar, along with classic gear like tilly hats and Yeti coolers, just right for that camping or fishing trip. Chaco sandals, the store’s biggest-selling shoe, are also a must, Reed said. “They’re great for a float down the river,” he said. “People want to wear feel-good clothes, and vendors have listened to customers.” Dressing up is also a little easier this year with no-iron khakis and shirts from Enro, and button-downs from Southern Marsh are versatile enough to be comfortable and look fresh for any occasion.

|

11D

Reed’s model Kevan Kirkpatrick sports a more casual look in a Southern Marsh button-down shirt with a pair of Kuhl (pronounced “cool”) brand pants. Kirkpatrick also enjoys a pair of Costa del Mar sunglasses, a must have for the summer months.

Reed’s model Matt Wyatt sports an Enro no-iron dress shirt under a Reed’s brand sport coat. Wyatt’s non-iron khakis are also by Enro, while his tie comes from Kenneth Cole reaction. A former quarterback for Mississippi State, Wyatt makes full use of Reed’s extensive big and tall shop.
