GumTree Festival is a two-day, outdoor celebration of the visual and performing arts. The primary focus of the festival is the juried exhibition of quality fine art and fine crafts, giving our audience the rare opportunity to meet, interact with, view the works of, and purchase art from, the artists who have created it. Additionally, the GumTree offers artist demonstrations for area schools, educational art activities on site, live performances, and a scholarship program for graduating high school seniors from Tupelo and Lee County. The GumTree Museum of Art, Inc. is a tax exempt art organization and all proceeds are used to produce the annual festival, to present educational art programs throughout the year, and to assist in other activities of the museum. Mission: The mission of the GumTree Festival is to increase public knowledge and appreciation for fine arts and fine crafts by creating opportunities that connect artists, the Tupelo community, and the general public, culminating in a quality juried outdoor art festival.

Each year, high school and middle school students from Tupelo and Lee County compete for awards based on artwork submitted by the students. Judges’ Choice Awards and Certificates of Merit are selected by a panel of judges. Three Judges’ Choices Awards are selected for each grade and up to fifteen certificate of merit awards are selected as well. Graduating high school seniors compete for $1,500 in scholarships from the Gumtree Festival. The scholarship competition is based upon portfolio presentations containing 10 to 12 original works of art, a sketchbook and an essay. Each year we tirelessly encourage young, talented artists to participate in our youth competitions. Through the effort, we have given many of these children and young adults an opportunity to excel in their gift through means not accessible to them otherwise. We have seen the direct results of the festival artists’ influence on our community youth. The GumTree Museum will exhibit winning works of art from the scholarship competition from May 5 to May 15. Judges’ Choice and Merit winning artwork will also be on display. 4

“I believe creativity has no limits. As an artist I have the privilege to explore the normal, everyday things around me and show the beauty in those things that may have gone unnoticed. From an awesome view off the Appalachian Trail to something in my own backyard, everywhere I look, I am inspired.”

Emily Carter // $300 // Tupelo High School “Art is passionate. Art is insprirational. Art is exquisite. Most people say art is an escape, however I think greater of it than that. Art is like entering an entire different world--a world that you create in your mind; everybody’s is different and that is the beauty of it. I find it moving that not one person’s style, technique, or form is the same. I am my own person in a world of art; there is no other like me.”

Mathilda Lail // $300 // Tupelo High School “Often after days of stressing over a project, I will ask myself, “Why do I continue to do art?”, but even on those days of feeling burnt out, I know the answer. Being creative is something that I crave to do, and if I quit doing art, I would always feel the desire to create new artwork.”

Anna Ballard // $100 // Tupelo High School “My artwork primarily focuses on my use of colors, conte’, and color pencil. I enjoy working in each of these mediums but my favorites to work in would be colored pencil and oil pastel because I love the way the colors blend.”

Katherine Huang // $100 // Tupelo High School “Art has always been a way for me to slip away from reality and enter a world where my imagination could reign free. It was a major source of joy for me as a child and I held it close to my heart. I regarded art as my best friend. As the older more creative sibling of two, I was usually the ringleader of our games and frequently created the stages and props we played with. I had a wild imagination that was proud of and that creative way of thinking stayed with me as I grew older and began to develop my drawing skills. Going through school, I have been able to gain inspiration and insight from both classmates and master artists.” These excerpts are from each scholarship recipient’s submitted essay which was a required part of the award program.

guest judge: john milstead John wrote and produced his first project, “Sides of The Soul” in 2009. He toured over 30 shows with Sister Hazel, opened for BB King, and sang on NBC’s Today Show. Out of 12,000 entries, John’s songs placed in the top 10 of the NSAI songwriting contest 3 years in a row. After 5 years of meetings and working his way into the Nashville writing community, John signed his first publishing deal as a staff writer with Reba Mcentire’s company Starstruck in October 2013. John also worked for NMMC cancer center as a Radiation Therapist for 10 years. “John is a powerhouse of precision vocals,” said David Kershenbaum, who produced Bryan Adams and Tracy Chapman. “Incredible melodic instinct-one of the strongest singers I’ve seen in a long time. True Artist,” said Robert Johnson, a writer/producer who has worked with Celine Dion and Lynyrd Skynrd. The Tupelo native has released an album that is pretty much incredible, especially from a “new”artist that writes, produces, and performs all of their material. Milstead has what some call an “old soul,” said Chuck Dauphin of Music News Nashville. For more information, go to johnmilstead.com

2014 songwriters competition

There are moments of greatness in any community I suppose. Tupelo has had an abundance of those moments, and great men and women that make them happen. We have suffered great loss over the last few weeks. Loss of homes, loss of a sense of normal, and loss of one amazing art benefactor. Jimmy Westbrook passed away on April 25, 2014. He had the artistic vision along with Gus Staub and Bill Ford for something greater for Tupelo. He dedicated years of his life to improving this community as well as “growing” the GumTree Festival we know today. He worked tirelessly in the early years to see GumTree Festival succeed and went on to oversee this festival for over 25 years. We are forever indebted to him. In January of this year, another great contributor as well as a local artist and architect, Gus Staub passed away. Staub’s talent was evident in his own art, his architectural designs that helped shape the Tupelo we know today, and his artistic and community-minded service to this area. He knew that Tupelo was capable and entitled to a culturally rich community. Together, Bill & Sandy Ford, Jimmy & Charlotte Westbrook, and Gus Staub charted new territory, and created a tradition that has stood the test of time.

GumTree Festival History:

In 1972, local art patrons and community minded individuals, Bill Ford, Gus Staub, and Jim Westbrook arrived at the realization that Tupelo was sorely in need of a connection to artists and to original art itself. They had grown tired of the cliche reproduction market and unimaginative “sofa art”, and set out to establish a community-wide appreciation for the fine arts and the unique individuals that create that art. It was their intent to provide an annual arts festival where not only artists could come and interact with their patrons, but where the community as a whole could view a wide variety of artists, media, and engage in discussions about that art work. This was the motivation and beginnings of the GumTree Art Festival. In the beginning, Ford, Westbrook, and Staub approached numerous festivals and spent countless hours establishing an artist mailing list. Over 3,000 invitations were mailed to artists around the country. The first few festivals were modest in stature, but had the makings of a tried and true Tupelo tradition. The work in the seventies was very avant garde as reflective of the art scene of the time. Bill Ford and Jim Westbrook went on to manage the festival for over 15 years together until Ford moved in the late ‘80s. Jim Westbrook carried on the festival tradition for another 10 years along with the dedicated staff of volunteers who came back year after year. These volunteers, many of which are still very active in the festival today, include: Carol Jean Vogee, Jean Francis Cooper, Lee Bryson, Barbara Fleishacker, John Blakey, Richard McCarty, and our own Bubba Nash. Jim Westbrook passed the festival “torch” to Tina Lutz when she moved to Tupelo and took on the role of Executive Director of GumTree Museum of Art. Tina along with a host of volunteers continued to grow the festival for another 16 years. The festival continues on today through the efforts of numerous volunteers. This is a community tradition and a legacy that these creative visionaries leave behind.
