Corinth plans a spring hazardous waste collection day BY LENA MITCHELL
DAILY JOURNAL CORINTH BUREAU
CORINTH – Plans are underway for another hazardous waste collection day in Corinth, with a goal to build on the success of last year’s event. Andrea Rose, director of Keep Corinth-Alcorn Beautiful, received approval Tuesday from
Kossuth High School news
both the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors and the Corinth Board of Aldermen to apply for a $25,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality to make the event possible. “Out planning committee will meet next week with some people we’re hoping to have as partners again – Caterpillar, Waste
Connection and the Corinth Street Department,” Rose said. “We’re looking at a May date for the event.” This local government solid waste assistance grant would pay 75 percent of the cost of the waste collection, to a maximum of $25,000. The remaining 25 percent of cost would be an in-kind match
such as advertising and promotion of the event, traffic control and other local services. “Waste Connection operates the transfer station facility and that makes them a great asset and partner for us with this project,” Rose said. “We’re so pleased they want to work with us again.” Two Caterpillar employees are on the KCAB board, she said, and
other employees also have been enthusiastic volunteers and the company has helped with equipment. “They really helped make it a great success last year and we’re thrilled beyond measure that they both want to participate again,” Rose said. lena.mitchell@journalinc.com

The Corinth Band has had students honored at three different events this year. The first was the State Band Clinic held in Natchez, MS. Jonathan Gann from the high school and Mikayla Smith from the middle school were chosen to represent the band at this event. Several students auditioned for the Mississippi State University honor band in January and 5 were selected: Will Pierce, John Edwards, Merritt Smith, Ilyssa Claxton, and Matthew Louis. Finally, we had three students representing the Corinth bands at the Northeast Mississippi Band Directors Association honor band at ICC this year: Mikayla Smith, Chris Young and Jordon Edwards. It should be noted that Mikayla was awarded first chair alto saxophone, and Chris first chair tuba. In addition, Chris received a scholarship to attend the summer band camp of his choice.

Readers Vote Voters Read If you’re looking to connect with voters... 84% of Democratic, 83% of Republican and 81% of Independent voters regularly read newspapers in print or online. Impressive online response! 51% of voters rate newspaper websites as reliable, accurate and in-depth for local political/civic issues. That’s more than all other websites. Now, as mobile usage emerges, 58% of voters who use mobile devices for political information use newspaper sources for that news. Seniority counts! The most reliable voting bloc, seniors, are frequent and regular newspaper readers - a whopping 84%. Surprise! 79% of young voters, 18-34, read a newspaper in print or online at least once a week. Even on mobile devices, young voters turn to newspaper sources first for campaign and election news. When it comes to reliable, accurate and in-depth information about local politics, newspapers - print and online - rank #1. Source: Moore Information (January 2012), American Voter Media Use

Home run numbers already ticking up
LOCAL VALUES
BASEBALL PLAYER TO CONTINUE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL
BY ERIC OLSON ASSOCIATED PRESS
UCLA hit just eight home runs in 2014, and it took until the 13th game for the Bruins to get their first. Three games into this season, they’ve hit five. UCLA was not alone in drawing on a power surge that jolted college baseball during the season’s opening weekend.Weather and pitching, of course, are important variables, but the new flat-seam ball appears to be doing what was intended in a sport starved for offense. Southeastern Conference teams accounted for 34 homers in 43 games compared with 18 in the first 43 games last year. Florida and Georgia each hit six in three games, with Gators cleanup man Harrison Bader’s three homers surpassing his total of two in 44 games last season. The Atlantic Coast Conference had 27 homers on the opening weekend, compared with 11 last year, and the Pac-12 had 20, compared with 10 in 2014. The increases did not occur in the Big 12 and Big Ten. The Big 12, with 17 homers, and the Big Ten, with 14, each had one fewer than it did the first weekend of 2014. Scoring was up by more than a run a game, according to D1Baseball.com. Games averaged 11.52 runs this past weekend, compared with 10.4 on opening weekend last year. The ball used this season is more like the one used at the professional level. Researchers found that the flat-seam ball could travel as much as 20 feet farther than the previous raised-seam ball.
NEMCC is adding another weapon to its baseball arsenal. After considering several options, 18-year-old Tyler Moore has committed to play for the Tigers beginning the 2015-16 school year. Tyler, who has been playing baseball most of his life, decided NE was the best fit for him, and Coach Ritchie Harrelson, who actively recruited Moore, is more than pleased with Tyler's decision. As a member of the ACHS Baseball Team, Tyler brings several tools to the game. He is known for his quickness and speed and for his ability to play almost any position. During his years as a Golden Bear, he served as a utility player, playing outfield, infield, and pitcher. His senior year he will be starting short stop when he is not pitching. As a junior, Tyler was All-Division honorable mention.

AROUND THE NATION
THE GUY’S A BULLDOG: Mississippi State’s Jacob Robson reached base in 16 of his first 17 plate appearances against Cincinnati and Miami (Ohio) and has a .765 on-base percentage through four games. CHAMPS WIN 2 OF 3: Defending national champion and top-ranked Vanderbilt won its series against Santa Barbara, with Ro Coleman’s bases-loaded infield grounder giving the Commodores a 6-5, 10-inning victory in the finale. All-American Carson Fulmer and freshman reliever Jordan Sheffield earned wins. Sheffield worked the last 32⁄3 innings of the series in temperatures that dropped into the 20s in Nashville. MIGHTY MATUELLA: Projected high first-round draft pick Michael Matuella struck out eight in six shutout innings in Duke’s 7-1 road win over California. The 6-foot7, 220-pounder didn’t pitch last summer because of injury. He struck out the first four Cal batters. INDIANA WINS REMATCH: It won’t make up for the stinging NCAA tournament loss to Stanford, but Indiana went on the road and won two of three against the Cardinal. The teams met three times in the Bloomington (Indiana) Regional last year, and Stanford won the final on a walk-off home run. It was a promising weekend for the Hoosiers, who lost their top three hitters and have a new coach in Chris Lemonis. Nick Ramos batted .429, Casey Rodrigue drove in four runs and Ryan Halstead had two saves after missing most of last season with a torn ACL. GRAND OPENING: Chad De La Guerra, the 2014 Western Athletic Conference batting champion, led Grand Canyon to a 3-0 start with three home runs and 12 RBIs. His greatest output came Sunday in a 30-7 win over Bradley. He went 5 for 6 with two homers, nine RBIs and five runs scored.
