Creative ways to recycle leaves
· Mulch: Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces with a mulching mower so they don't choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fill container plants before adding regular potting soil. · Insulation: Collect leaves to mound over delicate perennial plants and shrubs. The leaves will add more warmth to the soil and may help plants make it through harsh winters. Just remove the leaves slowly when spring arrives so that the soil underneath can get the sunlight and water it
needs to thrive. Leave some leaves in the yard so that animals can use them as nesting material and line their dens for the winter.
·
· Stuffing: Create whimsical scarecrows as part of your autumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants with leaves, which are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for visual effect. Tie off with twine and display your scarecrow. · Bedding: Chicken owners can use fallen leaves as bedding in their chicken coops. Dry leaves also may create more comfortable and drier conditions for goats and other livestock. Goats may look to recently fallen leaves as a nutritious food source. Gather the leaves and let the goats munch before you further rake and compost the leaves. · Decorations: Natural leaves can be used as decorations both inside and outside a home. String freshly fallen leaves together and wrap them around a grapevine wreath for a rustic door decoration. Leaves can be placed in clear vases and put on display for a cheap way to showcase some autumn color. Preserve favorite leaves with a lamination machine or by sealing them between heated sheets of waxed paper. Cut out the leaf shapes and use for hanging window decorations.
Recreation: Leaves have long been favorite toys for children, who eagerly await jumping into large piles of fallen
leaves. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a target on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can camouflage their cloth-
ing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of "hide and seek."
Feed A Bee, Feed The Planet
(NAPSI) — Apples, broccoli, cherries, almonds-they all have something in common that may surprise you. Besides the fact that they may be in your kitchen right now, each one of these foods is available thanks to the honey bee and other pollinators. In fact, about one-third of the human food supply depends on bees and other pollinators. Chances are, honey bees have a hand in producing some of your favorite foods. And with all of their hard work, bees need to eat, too. However, bees are struggling to find adequate, diverse food sources due to habitat loss. Recently, the White House launched the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge to create ways for every-
one to support the issue and increase forage. With a global population expected to rise to more than 9 billion people by 2050, 70 percent more food will need to be produced. This means we all have to pitch in to help feed the bees so they can continue to produce the fruits, nuts and vegetables that people need for a healthy diet. Join the effort to create a million pollinator gardens and feed the bees. Here are three ways you can help increase forage area for bees and other pollinators: • Learn more about native bee-attractant plants.
The Pollinator Partnership’s Bee Smart mobile app can help you choose the best plants to grow in your garden to attract bees and other pollinators. • Ask the Feed a Bee initiative to plant flowers on your “beehalf.” Feed a Bee is an initiative to increase forage areas for honey bees and other pollinators. By visiting www.FeedABee.com, you can ask the Feed a Bee initiative to plant flowers for you that produce the pollen and nectar that bees need to survive and thrive. Nearly 200,000 people have pledged to plant 50 million flowers in the U.S., and it doesn’t stop there. Feed a Bee is also partnering with government and nonprofit organizations and businesses across the country to plant thousands of acres of forage for bees.

Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees' roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. The following are some creative ways to recycle leaves that fall from your trees in the weeks to come.

Make simple work of household chores Clean from top to bottom. Dust and dirt will settle at the lowest possible points, so do not create extra work for yourself by cleaning floors and other surfaces and then dusting off shelves or cleaning cobwebs from the ceiling. Always work your way downward when cleaning your home.
Maintaining a clean and orderly home can sometimes be overwhelming. Homeowners juggling the responsibilities of work and family may find they have little energy for everyday household chores. But homeowners can employ some simple strategies to keep their homes clean and orderly without taking up too much of their time.
Keep stray item baskets in main rooms. Items from other rooms will inadvertently gravitate to places where your family spends most of its time. Cleaning takes a lot longer if you're constantly interrupting your tasks to put things where they belong. Instead, toss them into a catch-all basket and make your rounds to other rooms at the end of the cleaning session. Try a chore each day. Some cleaning enthusiasts advocate performing a different chore each day. Breaking cleaning down into more manageable chunks can make the task of cleaning a home a lot less daunting.
Keep cleaning items in the bathroom. Bathrooms get daily use, and they need a lot of attention. Store a set of cleaning tools and cleansers in the bathroom so they will always be at the ready. Consider keeping a spray bottle of a bleach-and-water solution or mildew cleaner near the shower so you can simply spray down the walls right after showering. Multitask as much as possible. Multitasking works at the office, and such an approach also can pay dividends when cleaning your home. For example, unload the dishwasher while your lunch is heating up in the microwave. This saves you some time and makes use of the time you would otherwise be standing around. Do laundry daily. Laundry can quickly sneak up on you, especially in a busy household. Instead of devoting an entire day to doing laundry, try to do one full load per day. This will make the pile of dirty clothes much more manageable and ensure that you and your family members always have some clean clothes available. Find a cleaning schedule that works and then stick with it, and soon you will discover that maintaining a clean and orderly home is not so difficult after all.
How to get a home organized When colder weather arrives, many people stay indoors and fight the harsh weather with hot chocolate and heating systems. It's no surprise, then, that most homes accumulate quite the amount of clutter over the course of a typical winter. The more time we spend indoors, the more junk we seem to amass. Clutter can contribute to the sense of cabin fever many people begin to feel as winter trudges forward. But a few home-organization tips can help make all those extra hours spent indoors during the winter months a little less claustrophobic. • Buy a coat rack. Just about everyone bundles up in a warm coat once the temperatures dip. But once you get home and the warm air inside welcomes you, the first instinct is to take the coat off and lay it down on the first chair you see. Instead of tossing all those coats on an armchair or a bench in the kitchen, buy a coat rack and place it just inside the main entrance. This way you will always know where your coat is, and the house won't look so messy with coats strewn about in a variety of places. • Have a tray set aside for keys. As clutter accumulates throughout the winter, the chances your keys will go missing increase. Save yourself the frantic search for keys in the morning by setting a tray aside for keys or just hanging a hook on the wall where everyone places their keys. • Partition desk drawers. It's easy to fill a desk drawer. It's much harder to remember a drawer's contents. Save yourself the stress of rooting through desk drawers by

every meal, then chances are you have lots of leftovers that have passed their prime. Have a potluck night where you eat all of the leftovers. Clean out the refrigerator once a week to ensure that it only contains fresh foods, beverages and additional items. • Add storage space. Using drawers and only drawers for storage is a great way to become disorganized. If you have any bare walls, particularly in the kitchen, use them to hang shelves you can use for storage. If the walls are full or not sturdy enough to hang a storage shelf, install an extra shelf or two in the pantry.

installing partitions so everything is not just lumped in together. This will make things easier to find and will likely prevent you from just adding random items to desk drawers. • Bundle all those cords. Nowadays, the average television has roughly one dozen cords attached to it. HDMI cables, video game consoles, DVD players, home theater systems, and, of course, the television cord itself are among the many cords that can make a mess near your television. Bundle these cords with a cord organizer to make wires and plugs much more manageable. • Toss the junk mail. Thanks to paperless bank statements and online billing, many people no longer receive important documents through the mail. Instead, mailboxes are filled with junk mail such as advertisements or menus from local restaurants. Rather than placing junk mail on the kitchen counter or storing it in the desk drawer, throw it out as you receive it and you will no doubt notice considerably less clutter almost instantly. • Stop losing things to the couch. Few things are as frustrating as a missing remote control. Too often remotes get lost in a sea of throw pillows that, while decorative, serve little purpose. Don't overdo it with throw pillows and designate an area for all those remote controls. • Clean out the refrigerator. Another culprit when it comes to clutter is the family refrigerator. Half-eaten meals or expired items can be found in almost every refrigerator on the planet. If you're putting leftovers in the fridge after

Autumn yard work gone 'green'
LEAVES
The tallest task with regard to fall yard work is collecting the leaves that fall to the ground. Some homeowners prefer to wait until all of the leaves have fallen before starting the collection process, while others handle the task in stages to make it more manageable. Regardless of your timing, skip the noisy gas- or electric-powered leaf blower in favor of a reliable rake. Raking not only collects the leaves but also helps men and women burn calories while ensuring they are not creating any noise or air pollution. Invest in a durable, ergonomic rake to get the job done quickly and without injury. Innovators are constantly reinventing the rake, and now there are designs that do not trap leaves, saving homeowners from the time-consuming tasks of cleaning the rake's teeth. Rake on a calm day so the wind isn't thwarting your efforts.
When it comes time to bag the leaves, use biodegradable paper bags or look for meshlike bags that are made from cornstarch. These are more eco-friendly than plastic bags, which can take much longer to decompose. You won't need to dispose of all the leaves you collect. Shred some to use as mulch, which can prevent soil erosion during the winter. Some leaves can be added to compost piles or used as a soil ammendment in planting beds.
COMPOST
Autumn is an ideal time of year to get started on building a compost bin. Take advantage of the cooler temperatures to make outdoor work more comfortable. According to the Audubon Society, American yards generate two tons of clippings each year. A lot of that waste ends up being bagged and thrown away. Instead of producing waste, compost leaves and grass trimmings to use as valuable fertilizer come the spring planting season. When choosing a location for your compost
bins, be sure to place them a good distance away from the house but near enough to garden beds. Most yard waste and food debris can be added to the compost pile. Just avoid animal products, which can produce harmful bacteria. Keep the compost damp and turn it periodically to facilitate the decomposition process.
Soak finished compost in water to create "compost tea." This liquid mixture can be sprayed on lawns in the fall to give the yard a nutrient boost that promotes healthy regrowth when the warmer weather returns. Eco-friendly lawn care can save energy, money and natural resources.
Outwit The Squirrels (NAPSI) — Bird feeding can be a fulfilling hobby, if you know how to outsmart a clever squirrel who’s eating your birdseed. These tips can help: 1) Baffles: Install baffles, at least 15 inches wide and sloped, between the top of the feeder and its hanger on a hanging feeder or between the ground and the feeder for feeders on posts. 2) Spinners: String spinners on a horizontal line. 3) Location: Mount bird feeders on a smooth metal pole at least six feet high and prune any branches within a 12-foot radius. 4) Feeders: • Metal Feeders help minimize the damage from hungry squirrels.
• Wire Cages placed around a bird feeder will keep squirrels out and allow smaller birds to continue feeding but prevent larger birds from accessing the feeder. • Slammer Feeders designed with doors triggered by a large bird’s or squirrel’s weight close and hamper access to seed. • Interactive Bird Feeders such as the Squirrel Boss Bird Feeder. This humane and effective squirrel-proof bird feeder has a remote control operated by you from inside your home that gives the squirrel a harmless static shock correction that “tingles” but doesn’t hurt the squirrel in any way. For more information, visit www.squirrelboss.comor call (888) 476-9499. 5) Seed: Squirrels are less enticed by nyger, millet, safflower, canary and canola seeds. Adding capsaicin to birdseed can also deter squirrels.

Autumn marks the time to transition from the hot days of summer to the chilly weather of winter. As people remove sweaters and long pants from storage, cleaning up their yards also may be on their minds. Fall is a season of beautiful foliage, but once that magical color show is over, thousands of leaves have fallen to the ground, necessitating a few weekends' worth of yard work. Some homeowners may be on the lookout for environmentally friendly ways to handle autumn yard work, and thankfully there are plenty of eco-friendly ways to tackle such tasks.

The relationship between paint and mood Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. The colors homeowners choose for their walls can give rooms their own unique feel and even affect the moods of the people within them. Finding the right shade for a bedroom or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first color that catches your eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be worthwhile to choose a color that helps you feel good rather than just following design trends. The paint color you pick may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat where you can unwind at the end of the day.

ORANGE
MCS R0, G136, B178
BLUE To create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colors that can help lower stress levels and promote sleep. That's why blue is a frequent fixture in bedrooms and bathrooms. Just be advised that too much blue can make a room appear cold and stark, so balance out blue with some warmer accents.
People have long related purple to royalty, and this dramatic color can add a formal, regal aspect to a home depending on the hue. Purple also may help stimulate the creative side of the brain. In paler shades of lavender, purple can seem almost ethereal and spiritual. Some designers suggest avoiding purple in a bedroom because that is a place you want your brain to rest rather than be stimulated.
Many people do not immediately consider bright orange for their homes, but when used as an accent shade, orange can really brighten up a home. Orange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youthful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent wall or a burst of color with orange throw pillows. If pumpkin orange is a little too bold for you, tone it down by choosing a more pastel, peachy hue, which is equally warm and energizing.

YELLOW
MCS R140, G198, B63
Few colors are more vibrant than yellow, which can help stimulate conversation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow is an ideal way to make any space more welcoming and bright. Just use it sparingly, as too much yellow may not be a good thing. Yellow accents mixed with touches of purple can offer the balance needed to prevent yellow rooms from overwhelming residents and guests.
GREEN
MCS R237, G28, B36
RED Red stimulates energy and appetite, which is why the shade is so popular in restaurants and home dining spaces. Red is a good choice for social gathering rooms but may not be the wisest choice for a bedroom, as the color may prove overstimulating.
Green can evoke composure and tranquility and works in any room of the house. Since green is the primary color of nature, it also works well for those people who want to bring some of the outdoors inside and work with the fresh starts and new growth that green can inspire. To make green feel less subdued and sleepy, work with its complementary opposite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance out the tranquility of green.
Home decorators should keep in mind that colors can be blended to create the desired environment. A color scheme based on complementary colors, or those opposite on the color wheel, may fit. Otherwise, analogous color schemes, or those colors that are next to one another on the color wheel, can create a variation that suits your design needs.

Reap the benefits of a well-insulated home (MS) - By Scott McGillivray Many of us know that insulation plays a key role in keeping our homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But did you know the benefits can go well beyond achieving basic Rvalue requirements? Quality insulation can provide a number of added benefits that contributes to the comfort, safety and efficiency of a home, including: Sound absorbency - Life is loud, but the right choice of insulation can help reduce noise transfer throughout your home. Insulating between floors and interior walls can help create a peaceful sanctuary in areas of your home, even when life is chaotic. A safe indoor environment - Good indoor air quality goes a long way toward ensuring personal comfort. Choosing insulation that is water repellant and resistant to mold, mildew, fungi, bacterial growth and rot can help to prevent common issues behind your walls that may pose serious health and safety concerns and lead to costly repairs. Look to products that will not offgas or emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Savings - A properly insulated building will be more energy efficient, a benefit that will continue to provide return on investment long after the insulation install is complete. The result is
reduced heating and cooling costs, less stress on your furnace and air conditioner (potentially leading to a longer equipment lifespan) and, at the end of day, more money in your pocket. Fire-resistance - Certain insulations, particularly stone wool insulation products such as Roxul Comfortbatt and Safe 'n' Sound, can help buy valuable minutes in the event of a fire, withstanding temperatures of up to 1,177°C. Noncombustible, this insulation exceeds the limits of most other insulating materials, and it won't produce smoke or encourage the spread of flames. Performance - It's important to remember that not all insulations are created equal. Some insulations can sag or contract over time, leaving gaps that can let outdoor air in and conditioned air out. Choosing insulation that is dimensionally stable, durable and that offers long-term thermal performance will ensure your home can stand up in even the
most challenging conditions. Stone wool products are proven to perform in even the most extreme conditions, making them ideal for use in the United States. Ultimately, you can purchase insulation as many do, based on basic R-values. But when it

Why should you use a REALTOR today? Market data is readily available with the internet today, but that only confuses buyers and sellers. Professional services offered by a full time realtor such as Ellen Short, who brings the needs and desires of her clients and customers, coupled with a real understanding of today’s market, can lead to a successful conclusion of any real estate transaction.
There’s only one chance to make a great impression when selling your home. You need to look at your home through the buyer’s eyes and see what needs to be done to make it the perfect home. Remember, you only get one chance to make a great first impression!

Outdoor living is very popular as more people wish to commune with nature in the comfort of their own home. Sprucing up a deck or patio with attractive furniture, raised flower beds and maybe a water feature will give years of enjoyment and appeal to buyers.

The Kitchen Helps the Home Sell!
The kitchen is the most important room to a potential buyer. It needs to be in top condition. Most money spent remodeling the kitchen is usually recouped when selling the home. Make sure the stove, refrigerator, dishwasher and garbage disposal are in good working order and clean. Replace the floor and the tile on the walls, or at least make sure they look new. Spruce up cabinets with a new coat of paint, if needed. Keep counters clear of clutter and the sink clear of dishes.

Pruning trees a job best left to the pros
AVOID INJURY Professional tree contractors recognize and understand the hazards associated with tree and limb removal. Many operate in accordance with national or local guidelines to maintain proper clearance of power lines and structures. Trimming trees close to electrical lines puts a person at risk of being electrocuted. Professionals know how to protect themselves and prevent power outages, which can result when limbs come into contact with power lines. Professional tree services will use machinery appropriate for the task. Cherrypickers and cranes may lift
workers to the correct height to work on trees, while do-it-yourselfers who rely on climbing trees or using ladders are at risk of injury. PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE TREE Many tree services understand the proper way to prune trees to minimize stress and damage to the tree itself. Novice pruners may inadvertently do more harm than good, resulting in proliferation of tree disease or shock. Improper pruning technique also can lead to an unsightly tree.
LIABILITY
A professional tree service will possess the correct liability and worker's compensation insurance. This protects homeowners against litigation should someone be injured while tree work is being done. Homeowners who damage neighboring properties when cutting down a tree may find that they are not covered by their homeowner's insurance policies. This can be a costly mistake that's easily avoided by simply hiring a fully insured tree removal service. THE RIGHT TOOLS The right tools can mean the difference between a job done correctly and one that results in disaster. Professional arborists and tree services have acquired the training, tools and techniques to perform the job safely. This includes using the right tools to tackle the job. Ropes, pulleys, cranes, stump grinders, and other heavy machinery are just a few of the tools tree services have at their disposal that the average homeowner does not. Trimming or removing trees can be an unpredictable and potentially dangerous endeavor. Such work is best left to professionals.
Power Tool Fuel Facts
Available at
NAPSI)—When it comes to making the lawn mower, string trimmer and other gas-powered outdoor equipment start easily and run smoothly, the most important factor is the quality of the fuel you use. All fuel needs to be stabilized, especially ethanol-blended fuel. As fuel ages, gums form that clog carburetors and injectors, making engines run rough or hard to start. The engines are fine—the fuel is the problem. The solution requires more than a traditional chemical fuel stabilizer. To keep the fuel fresh in your yard care equipment for two years, in use or not, you need a multifunctional fuel treatment with the right blend of enzymes. The enzymes let oxygen attach to hydrocarbon fuel molecules for a more complete burn, maximum power, crisper throttle response and improved fuel economy. They also help prevent carbon deposits and keep engines running clean, with significantly reduced emissions. Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment’s enzymes also break up gums and clumps of water molecules so they can be safely eliminated when the engine runs.

Bountiful, healthy trees can be beautiful to behold and important contributors to a thriving environment. According to American Forests, a nonprofit conservation organization, a tree can absorb as much as 40 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and can sequester one ton of carbon dioxide by the time the tree reaches age 40. The United States Forest Service adds that trees placed properly around a home can reduce air conditioning and heating demands considerably. Many homeowners are content to leave healthy trees alone. However, trees eventually must be pruned or removed if they become safety risks or pose other threats. Trees with roots that are damaging home foundations or those with limbs overhanging property limits or power lines can be troublesome. Although homeowners can handle relatively minor tree maintenance, for a variety of reasons, many tree projects are best left to the professionals.
