Thunderchief to be dedicated duringVeteransDayprogram DAILY JOURNAL

TUPELO – During the last two weeks, crews have been working nearly non-stop to get the F-105 Thunderchief display ready in Veterans Park. “We’ve been working diligently to get the sidewalks done, the pavers, the seat wall and the rest of the landscaping,” said Tupelo Parks & Recreation director Alex Farned. “It won’t be 100 percent done by Veterans Day, but we will still have the dedication ceremony during the city’s annual Veterans Day program. “The high school is sending a 50-student choir to sing. Smitty Harris, who used to fly F-105s, went to a pilot’s conference out west recently and he is trying to get veteran pilots to be a part of it. It will be nice.” The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in the park. Efforts to get the F-105Thunderchief, af-

fectionately known as The Thud, to Veterans Park have taken more than five years. The Thud was chosen to honor Col. Smitty Harris of Tupelo and Lt. Col. Gene Smith of West Point. Both men flew the plane and both were shot down over Vietnam. The $60,000 project to display the plane began when a group of veterans joined forces to form Jet Volunteers. The plane was located in San Antonio, Texas, but there were some delays in getting it shipped to Tupelo. It arrived in Tupelo in March 2013, but the plane sat in a back lot on Crossover Road until earlier this year when work began in earnest to renovate the plane and prepare it to sit on a pedestal in the east Tupelo park. The plane made its way across town to the park on a Sunday morning in September. The next day, the 10-ton plane was hoisted onto the pedestal and bolted down. william.moore@journalinc.com

American Legion Post 49 was destroyed in the April 24, 2014, tornado.

Legion Hall should be rebuilt by end of year BY WILLIAM MOORE DAILY JOURNAL

TUPELO – Local veterans hoped the rebuilding of American Legion Post 49 would be completed by Veterans Day, but the rebuilding of the Legion hut will take a little while longer. The Legion hall at Legion Lake was destroyed by the April 24, 2014, tornado that devastated parts of Tupelo. Work on the new, 7,300square-foot building began last summer. Volunteers from Eight Days of Hope leadership team spent 14

days, starting the July 4 weekend, erecting the frame of the building. “Most of the exterior work is done. We are working on the interior right now,” said Post commander Mike Pettigrew. “We are about 95 percent complete on the electrical and they are still working on the fire suppression system.” All of the electrical and plumbing rough-ins must be completed and inspected before the drywall can be installed to make the interior start to take its final shape.

“The date we had hoped for all along was Nov. 11, but that’s not going to happen,” Pettigrew said. “Unfortunately, we knew that in September. There were unforeseen delays with contractors that set us back.” Officials hope to be in the building by the end of the year. Efforts to keep costs low by using volunteer labor has created some of the time delays. “If we were in a position to just sit back and cut checks (to contractors), it would be done by now,” Pettigrew said. “But the fund-raising has been slow. We try to use volunteer groups when we can, but sometimes you have to wait for them to be available. “We are thankful that people are still wanting to help.We don’t have any reason to complain.” The new building will have a front porch and picture windows facing Legion Lake. It will be slightly smaller than the old building, but it will be more accessible because it will only be one level. The building will also have a more efficient layout that includes two ballrooms and a conference room. The old building had offices scattered around and a basement that “looked and smelled like a basement.” People can still donate to the building fund through the CREATE Foundation or by mailing a check to American Legion Building Fund, 1875 Legion Lake Road, Tupelo, MS, 38804. william.moore@journalinc.com

The cause was not really worth all the lives we lost over there.” Ginn compared the Vietnam War to the conflict with ISIS, saying it was never actually a war; it was just a conflict. “You see what happened when we pulled out (of Vietnam). We gave it all back to Viet Cong,” he said. “In essence, I feel like all the years we spent over there, and all the lives we spent over there, were worthless.” Looking back, Ginn did have some positive experiences in his 20-plus years of military service when he was stationed in Newark, New Jersey. In 1975, Newark was considered the worst city in the United States, but he went anyway. “I worked with college kids and helped train first lieutenants,” Ginn said. “When you saw them get commissioned and get to college, it's very rewarding to know

that you had a part of that.” In regards to veterans suffering from Agent Orange-related illnesses – caused by a herbicide the United States used in Vietnam to clear jungles – Ginn said progress is being made in aiding veterans. “Vietnam screwed up a bunch of people, but it’s going better,” he said. “Congress is pushing it. I have a lot of friends who have a lot of sickness. They are finding out these sicknesses a lot of our veterans have can be contributed to Agent Orange.” As commander of VFW Post No. 4057, Ginn said he wants to change some of the stereotypes that exist for veterans. “Veterans need more medical help and more recognition for what they’ve done,” he said. “That's what we try to do here. It's not a place to just go get drunk, it's a place to go have camaraderie, make friends, meet people and help people.” zack.orsborn@journalinc.com Twitter: @thedaily_zack

First Sgt. Tony Shackleford of Belden was deployed to Iraq in 2005-06 with the 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team. When he returned stateside, Shackleford helped found the Dixie Thunder Run, a motorcycle ride that raises money for soldiers in need.

lost 28 soldiers during the war. In addition to the threat caused by the enemy, members of the 155th were hit by unexpected news from back home. “One of the hardest things I saw Collins have to deal with was Hurricane Katrina coming in August,” Shackleford said. “That was tough for guys, especially those from Waveland and down there. We were over there, so there was nothing we could do. That was hard for guys. “Going around and visiting the guys, those were tough moments because you’ve got to be a solider,” Shackleford continued, “but guys didn’t know if their families were alive.” Collins worked with the Red Cross to help members of his brigade connect with family members. When he could, he rotated soldiers back to Mississippi, so they could deal with the crisis in person. When Shackleford’s stay in Iraq was over, he still had work to do. On the official side, he was assigned to recruitment and retention, and helped build an ROTC program at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville. On the personal side, he was one of the founders of the Dixie Thunder Run, a motorcycle ride and fundraiser. “The first year after we got back home was our first ride,” Shackleford said. “It was going to be just one. We had probably four of our guys who had been injured, and we gave the proceeds to them.” This is the Dixie Thunder Run’s 10th anniversary, and some $380,000 has been raised for soldiers and their families.

“That’s pretty good for a once-ayear motorcycle ride,” he said. The 2015 Dixie Thunder Run has already happened, but the team is supporting Ride for a Cause, a Dec. 5 event that’s affiliated with the rock band 3 Doors Down’s Better Life Foundation. Raffle tickets are being sold for a custom Harley-Davidson Road Glide that’s been painted red, white and blue. On one part of the bike, there’s a painting of a pair of empty boots, a rifle in the ground, an empty helmet and dog tags with the name “Zippo.” That’s in honor of the late David “Zippo” Bland, one of the Dixie Thunder Run’s founders. To learn more or to make a contribution, visit www.dixiethunderrun.net. Though Shackleford said retirement is more than a word, he’s still committed to the National Guard. These days, he’s with the 2-114th Field Artillery Battalion. “The first sergeant’s job is simple, beans and bullets,” he said. “I’m responsible for getting them fed and making sure they have ammo. I make sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to do and make sure they’re where they need to be.” Shackleford also has duties as president of the Dixie Thunder Run, and he hasn’t spent much time thinking about stepping down. “As long as there is a need, and there is a huge need,” he said, “we’ll keep doing it, as long as it is supported by the public.” scott.morris@journalinc.om Twitter: @mscottmorris
