Dedication to our 2020 spring sports athletes and teams
W
e have most definitely had a year to remember in 2020 and I thought it would be fitting to dedicate this 2020 Fall Sports Preview to those players, coaches, parents and teams that saw their season come to a halt due to the coronavirus. While I was able to busy myself in other work with the paper and working in the garden at home, I cannot imagine the pain and frustration that our students and teachers went through. It was especially tough for all our seniors and their families and I just want to take this time to say thank you to each and every senior of 2020 for the opportunity to know you and follow your exploits on the field and in the classroom. I will never forget you and I promise not to forget what you went through and what you gave up this spring. I just want to use the following paragraphs to share what happened and how our students were affected. I trust and pray that we never go through anything like this again. The spring sports seasons for New Albany and Union County schools began in late February and early March with high hopes and great expectations. However, by the second week of March, the coronavirus had become an issue within our state and the Mississippi High School Activities Association had to follow suit with closures and shutdowns of spring sports. The season came to a close for area teams on March 16 which immediately followed the spring break for schools. All MHSAA interscholastic and fine arts activities competition and practice was suspended in hopes
that it could salvaged at a later date in the spring. However, that was not to be the case as the state of Mississippi continued to deal with coronavirus as did the entire nation. Sadly, about a month later in mid-April, the MHSAA had to completely cancel the spring sports/activities season since Mississippi schools had to close for the year as well. There were two teams that were poised to defend state championships in 2020 that were not afforded that opportunity because of the shutdown, East Union girls powerlifting and New Albany tennis. The Lady Urchin powerlifters were in excellent position to win their fifth consecutive Class I title in April. East Union had already won their fifth North Half title by 22 points over second-place Bruce just a couple of weeks prior to the shutdown. East Union returned seven individual gold medalists from 2019 - Kaitie Boatner, Jessie Roberts, Liz Hall, Yilah Isby, Maggie McVey, Emma Boatner and Mary Herod. New Albany tennis had won two consecutive Class 4A team titles and returned all but one player from 2019 as they looked to take a third title. New Albany also had the returning Class 4A girls doubles champions, Maggie Scott and Jill Gafford as well as runners-up Lexie Kent and Ellie Myers. Another individual state champion, Kinsley Gordon, would not be allowed to defend her title in the 1A girls discus at the MHSAA State Track and Field Championships due to the cancellations. Her teammate, Charlize Williams was the silver medalist in the event. Staying with track and field, the Myrtle Girls had hopes of challenging TCPS for the overall team title in 1A in 2020 after their second place finish in 2019. Add to this list all the players, coaches, teams and seniors that were
looking forward to competing this spring for New Albany, East Union, Ingomar, Myrtle and West Union. Sports that were not allowed to conduct very much of or complete their seasons included baseball, fastpitch softball, powerlifting, tennis, golf, archery, track and field. We had probably between 300-400 athletes that were affected by the shutdown between the seven sports here across our county. Sadly, none of the senior athletes were to take the field, track, floor, etc. to knowingly participate in their final contest as a senior. Sports that regularly recognize their seniors with a senior night before or after a contest, could not do so. Our young people are resilient as well as the majority of Mississippians and we trust the hardships and heartaches that were associated with the spring of 2020 will only mold them and make them stronger. It was definitely a spring and sports season like no other and everyone will be left with a lot of “what ifs” concerning how it all came down. Let us all heed the words of Chuck Swindoll as we look back at the happenings from the spring of 2020: “We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations.”

OFFENSE
New Albany’s already potent rushing attack got an injection during the offseason as A.I. Nugent transferred over from Myrtle and joins CJ Hill on the Bulldog backfield. The RB duo combined for over 3,500 yards and 51 TDs last season. Hill led the Bulldogs in rushing in 2019 and scored six rushing touchdowns and had one TD reception in the first round playoff win over Shannon. The New Albany offense is returning eight starters including an offensive line which brings back four starters from last season. The line is anchored by the All-Division right tackle Adam Conlee. “Wide receiver will be played by a committee of talented players including All-Division selections Isaiah Cohran, Cameron Knox, and
10 2020 Fall Sports Preview
Mason Simmons,” said New Albany coach Cody Stubblefield. “We also look for Micah Reed to be a solid contributor at the WR position. The quarterback position is still being decided but is currently led by Joe Mathis (Jr.) and John Stacks (So.).” Cohran is a big play athlete that is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. He was injured in the sixth game of the year against Amory and missed all the division contests for the Bulldogs.
DEFENSE
The 2020 Defense returns eight starters from last season. Among those returning is an experienced secondary including Simmons, Ramaryon Crawford (Sr.) and Knox. Artaveion High (Sr.), a long time contributor to the basketball program will also debut at corner. “Our team’s leading tackler, Jackson Formsma (Sr.) with 79 tackles in 2019 will return and be joined by Lewis Creekmore (Sr.) at linebacker,” Stubblefield said. “Shamarques Smith (Sr.) and Nugent will play at outside linebacker and be the edge players on the New Albany defense. At defensive line you see a mix of up and coming younger talent along with some veterans that will play both offensive and defensive line.”
SPECIAL TEAMS
Caleb McDonald (Sr.) returns as New Albany’s punter and kicker. Wright Miskelly (Jr.) and Brian Romero (Sr.) will also compete for an opportunity to kick for the Bulldogs this season. Simmons and Cohran will handle the kickoff and punt returns for the Bulldogs and ninth-grader Ethan Conlee is working out as the long snapper according to Stubblefield.
X-FACTOR
“At New Albany we just want the opportunity to play,” Stubblefield said. “We’re a team led by upperclassmen who have stuck together, worked hard and elevated our program to a new

level. This is a season we’d like to remember at New Albany for more than just COVID-19.”
SCHEDULE ANALYSIS
The Bulldogs will once again compete in a tough Division 1-4A with Corinth, North Pontotoc, Ripley and Tishomingo County. Non-division games will provide early tests as New Albany has road games at Pontotoc and Amory while hosting Booneville and Hernando in September.
COACH SPEAK
“I want to see a group of guys who will push to take over games this season. We have the potential to have a great year if we continue to work hard and leave it all on the field. I expect our defense under incoming defensive coordinator Trent Hammond to play fast and with a chip on their shoulder. I expect our offense to lean on the experience of our offensive line and the ability of our running game. When you add the explosiveness that our receivers bring to the table you could see a lot of points on the scoreboard.” - Cody Stubblefield

EAST UNION FOOTBALL
Lott comes back to 2A to lead urchins FAST FACTS
Division: 1-4A 2019 record: 9-3, 4-0 (Playoffs: lost in second round)
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Colton Plunk, RB/DB (Senior) - Had 1550 Yards Rushing and 20 Rushing TDs also had 555 Yards Receiving with 9 Receiving TDs. Hayden Roberts, WR/DB (Junior) - Multi-talented athlete who had 891 yards receiving and 10 TDs plus 6 interceptions for 163 YDs, 2 TDs. Josh Duley, Lineman (Junior) Graded out at 92% for the year and has given up two sacks in two years while averaging one pancake block per game for two years.
OFFENSE
First year Coach Todd Lott comes to East Union after serving the past two seasons as AD/defensive assistant coach. He inherits an Urchin offense that returns seven starters. “First of all, I am very blessed to be working with a great group of coaches,” Lott said. “Stephen Basil, Brandon Cherry, Scott Duley, and Chris Lucius have been amazing in helping transition from the past to a new head coach. Not only are they great coaches, but they are great men and role models for our players.” The key to the East Union offense will be senior running back Colton Plunk who proved to be a hard man to bring down in the 2020 campaign. He should get even more carries this season as the Urchins may lean more toward the ground game after two seasons of “airing it out” on offense. Lott will look to Rett Johnson to handle the quarterback chores. Johnson is a multi-sport athlete that starred in baseball and basketball for the Urchins, but this is his first season under center for East Union. Hayden Roberts offers a big play
14 2020 Fall Sports Preview
receiver for Johnson to direct his passes to while Micah Fulgham (Sr.) can run and catch as he lines up in multiple positions. Josh Duley will lead the Urchins in trenches and open holes for Plunk to navigate through.
DEFENSE
Lott plans to go with a 3-3-5 scheme defensively with East Union and has seven starters back on that side of the ball for 2020. Leading the Urchin defense will be linebackers Connor Timms (So.) and Gage Fellows (Jr.). Roberts and Fulgham will work the safety positions for East Union.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Edgar Zapata (Sr.) returns as the kicker for the Urchins. He connected on 33 extra points for East Union in 2019. Roberts will serve as the punter after averaging 35.1 yards per punt last season. Collin Stephens (Jr.) will handle the long snapping duties for the Urchins on kicks and punts. Return men for East Union will be Plunk and Fulgham on kickoffs while Roberts will be returning punts.
X FACTOR
“There are many different variables that determine whether or not a team is successful,” Lott said. “Obviously, we have to stay healthy and avoid losing players to injury. Another major factor that determines success is Team Chemistry. When players and coaches are united and focused on a common mission week in and week out, teams have a chance to be special. “Football is a tough sport and things get hard sometimes, therefore, we have to be there for each other. How we respond to the good and the bad will determine a lot about our

season. Every week, especially during these unprecedented times, creates new challenges and new variables that we will have to deal with. The teams that are able to stay together and stay focused will have a huge advantage during the season.”
SCHEDULE ANALYSIS
East Union’s September schedule of non-division games features home dates with Ashland and Hatley while the Urchins go on the road to face Tishomingo County and East Webster. The Urchins have won back-to-back titles in Division 1-2A and hope for the trifecta in 2020. Home games will be with Walnut and Strayhorn while the Urchins travel to Mantachie and Potts Camp.
COACH SPEAK
“We are really pleased about the progress our team has made this summer; we have had great attendance and players have worked extremely hard. Our focus is on getting better each day and each rep; we feel like that’s about the only thing we truly have control over.” - Todd Lott.

MYRTLE FOOTBALL
Hawks experience home field for first time in 2020 FAST FACTS
Division: 1-1A 2019 record: 6-6, 5-2 (Playoffs: lost first round)
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Ethen Hunt, RB/LB (Senior) Takes over as the Hawks featured back after he rushed for 525 yards & 4 TDs; 49 tackles last season. Carl Graham, RB/WR/DB (Senior) - Had 500 yards total offense last season and recorded 5 interceptions on defense. Connor Coleman, OL/DL (Senior) - Allowed 1 sack on offensive line, had 55 tackles, 4 sacks on defense.
OFFENSE
Myrtle must replace over 1,900 rushing yards with the departure of A.I. Nugent, but Ethen Hunt has the experience and hopes to fill the void. The Hawks plan to use a offense by committee approach to give more Hawks the opportunity to get touches and make contributions. “We return four of our starting offensive linemen from last season,” Myrtle coach Jeremy Smithey said. “One of the keys for this season will be how they continue to develop as a unit. “Conner Coleman will headline the unit as a member of last year’s second team All-State. The new offensive scheme this year should put the ball in the hands of a number of different players.”
DEFENSE
“Defensively, we will return 8-9 starters off of last year’s team,”
18 2020 Fall Sports Preview
Smithey said. “Shelton Graves (Jr.), Ethen Hunt, Carl Graham, and Caden Hutcheson (Jr.) were members of 1st Team All-Division last year. “Andrew Phillips (Sr.) could emerge as a force on the defensive line. Experience on this side of the ball should help us as we continue to implement new schemes this season.”
SPECIAL TEAMS
Benji Dillard will return as the Myrtle kicker this fall. According to Smithey, Dillard has developed a strong leg, and his ability to hit long field goals could be a key factor in several games this fall. Dillard and Elijah Thompson (Sr.) will both serve as punters. Luke Gaines (Sr.) will be the Hawks long snapper.
X-FACTOR
“The development of some of our freshmen and the percentage of our offensive package that we are able to feasibly use in games should become our X-factor,” said Smithey.
SCHEDULE ANALYSIS
Myrtle will finally have a true home field advantage in 2020 as they open up their new facility next to the softball/baseball complex. The Hawks had played their home games in previous years at the New Albany Sportsplex in BNA Bank Park. Myrtle will open the season with only two non-division games, traveling to Marshall Academy in week one then playing host to 2A Walnut. After that, the Hawks jump into a busy 1-1A slate that features home games with Biggersville,
Head Coach Jeremy Smithey (second season at Myrtle) Assistant Coaches:

Thrasher and HW Byers. Myrtle will have to travel to four venues which include Falkner, Ashland, Coldwater and Baldwyn. “The delayed start is going to make us adapt our normal early season schedule,” Smithey said. “However, I see it as an opportunity to get more work in to prepare for the season. It will help us make up for the time we missed in spring practice.”
COACH SPEAK
“I love this group of kids. The core group of this year’s team were the kids that got this program started. I want this season to be memorable for them. They will finally have a field to call their own.” - Jeremy Smithey.

NEW ALBANY VOLLEYBALL
Communication and cohesion are keys to new albany success
N
ew Albany volleyball made it all the way to the 4A State Championship before falling to perennial powerhouse Vancleave in 2019, but the road back will be much different in 2020 as four key players are now gone. Maggie Moore, Rosalee Roberts and Janae Shackleford graduated while Greta Blakemore moved in the offseason. Coach Ashley Connolly starts her 11th year coach in high school volleyball and her second year with New Albany. She is ready to rebuild and rework the components to this year’s squad in attempts to win another division crown and revisit the playoffs. “We have a very blended group of girls this year,” Connolly said. “There will be some old faces and some new. We have been working on about five different rotations, depending on who our opponent will be.” Connolly returns four players that either started or saw significant playing time in 2019 and looks to these Lady Bulldogs to lead this year. “We will most definitely be looking to our two returning senior starters, Vakeria Jett and Alexis Mirfield to take control on offense,” Connolly said. “Masey Kate Adams is also very vocal as every setter should be and she has stepped up in that leadership role as a sophomore. Hannah Hughes has taken over the defensive role and is backed by a few new faces.” With so many unknowns about this year’s team, Connolly is hesitant to single out any players that she might view as a top offensive of defensive player. “I can’t say right now who our top players will be on either,” she said. “I know we are strong on both sides. It will depend on the game and our strategy.” New Albany will have several new faces on the varsity squad although they are not unknowns to their coach as they played under her in JV last

season. “We have a lot of newcomers to our line up,” Connolly said. “Some offensive and some defensive. This will most definitely be my first year of coaching where I sub more than usual.” New Albany will compete in Division 1-4A with Corinth, North Pontotoc, Ripley and Tishomingo County. Connolly hopes their nondivision matches will prepare them for the division grind. “Every non-division game is an opportunity to grow and learn from our mistakes,” she said. “I strongly believe in, the only way to get better is to play teams that are bigger and better than you. And when you beat them, that’s one step closer to your goal.” Even though the Lady Bulldogs will be missing some key faces that had been a part of two division titles and two playoff appearances, Connolly thinks her team is up to the
challenge. “I feel like this year will be a new year, new us kinda feel,” Connolly said. “We have new leadership and a new look about us, but it’s not a bad thing. I hope people underestimate us. “Our X factor is communication and cohesion. Without either any team is doomed to fail.” Adding to the work of a slight team rebuild in 2020 is the daily issue of having to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and all the health and safety precautions that must accompany those. Connolly and her team are keeping safeguards in place to help alleviate the spread. “We take every precaution necessary before, during and after practice,” Connolly said. “They go through the same temp checks and questions as every other athlete in our district. All CDC guidelines, orders from our government and MISSHAA guidelines are taken seriously and enforced.”

Consistency will be key for East Union
E
ast Union begins year two of volleyball under Coach Josh Blythe and the Lady Urchins hope to quickly adapt to their newest team sport after going 9-11 in 2019. Volleyball is fast becoming popular there and the Lady Urchins will work hard on getting the game down. “It’s our second-year of playing you know so you hope we’ve gotten better at understanding the game,” Blythe said. “As a coach I know I’ve learned as much this year as I did our first, so you hope to continue that knowledge of the game and help your kids get better. I call coaches a lot and ask questions.” Even though the Lady Urchins are new to the sport, Blythe has some players returning that will provide key leadership on the floor. “Our top offensive players right off the top of my mind have to be Jorja Roberson, Maggie McVey, Mia Hutcheson, and Peyton Wildman,”
24 2020 Fall Sports Preview
Blythe said. “Those are the kids we’re looking to lead us in kills.” Blythe is especially excited about one player that saw limited playing time in 2019 and sees a lot of potential for her. “New comers this year really aren’t new, but yet we have someone who has definitely grown as a better player and that’s Emma Akins,” he said. “She didn’t play much varsity last year but by the end of last season, you could see the potential. She’s worked and you literally have to run her away from the gym.” East Union will be playing in Division 1-2A with Mantachie, Potts Camp and Walnut. “The schedule this year is more difficult than last season,” Blythe said. “The division has changed and all the teams in it have played multiple years so we’ll have our work cut out for us.” Blythe sees strengths and weaknesses with his team and they hope to build off both.
“Our strength I would say would be our setters, and weakness is just being consistent every day and every match,” he said. “CONSISTENCY without a doubt our x-factor. As a coach, you need to know what you’re getting each night from each of your players. Every person has to become a more consistent player.” Blythe and the Lady Urchins been dealing with all the intricacies of improving their game in year two, but they also have dealt with the Covid-19 issues as well. “Been difficult not going to lie, navigating the Coronavirus,” Blythe said. “We’ve split our kids up all summer, checked temps, and even practiced our kids at different times to keep the numbers inside down, per the Governors orders.”

Communication and execution are key for Lady Falcons
Y
ear two of volleyball for Ingomar has the Lady Falcons going to a new division and facing different foes while they continue to hone their skills in the game. “We are looking to take the next step since last year was an introductory year,” Coach Andy Wilbanks said. “Trying to put in a set offense and learning to transition from offense to defense and vice versa. Our division (2-1A) will be West Union and Smithville.” One plus to this being the second year of volleyball for the Lady Falcons is the fact that they had very little turnover due to graduation. “We will play a lot of the same
players from last year and we only lost one senior,” Wilbanks said. “We are a blend of upper and underclassmen have a good mix of both.” Wilbanks will have plenty of returning players to step into leadership roles for his second year team and sees size as a key. “Upper class leadership should come from our juniors and lone senior Kailey Edwards,” he said. “Hopefully our size on the front line will be an advantage for us this year,” Wilbanks said. Wilbanks has been stressing serves, passing and serve-receive to his Lady Falcons while working on communication. “We really have to focus on
getting serves in and being solid in passing and serve receive,” Wilbanks said. Communication and how well we execute will be our goals to be successful.” Ingomar has been been rigorously working to stay safe during the coronavirus situation and will continue to practice safe policies during the season with players, coaches and fans. “We have have followed MHSAA Covid guidelines and Union county schools Covid guidelines with safety and sanitation,” Wilbanks said. “We will follow all safety guidelines set forth by both those organizations concerning matches and attendance.”

Lady Hawks still learning and improving their game
C
oach Robert Gordon and his Myrtle Lady Hawks enter year two of volleyball which will also involve their first taste of division competition in Division 3-1A with HW Byers and Hickory Flat. Gordon has a host of players returning with experience from 2019 although he might not classify them as veterans. “Well, we have no veterans being a second year team, they have 14 or so games under their belt but I wouldn’t say they are veterans,” Gordon said. “Every day seems like we are still learning and trying to improve, like me as a new coach to this sport who is learning as well.” While all those teams and coaches are learning a new game, the enthusiasm for players and fans alike has been overwhelming. Gordon will count on his upperclassmen to lead
26 2020 Fall Sports Preview
his team on the court and help with the transition. “Our seniors are obviously our team leaders, we are counting on them this year to help lead practices, and especially work with our young girls on techniques and fundamentals of the game,” Gordon said. “We are counting on these people to be key contributors Amanda Watkins, Lexi Hutcheson, Sarah Kate Thompson, Kinsley Gordon, Kierstyn Shoops, Breanna Smith, Kinzie Waits, Mollie Moody, Emma Mayer, Cora Kelly, Harleigh Herring , Olivia Decanter, Kelly Smith, Emma Speck and Elly Gaines among other underclassmen who are working hard and getting better daily. We have four girls from last year that played but due to virtual learning at home will not be able to play, while we had a few who decided not to play.” Myrtle experienced the same issues
regarding their practices as did the other school due to the coronavirus which could have benefitted with practices that improved their game. “Due to the covid pandemic we were unable to practice this summer and work on the much needed skills and fundamentals we needed to improve before our upcoming season,” Gordon said. “Right now, everyday, we are working on getting our bodies in position to be more efficient passers, trying to have better foot work, communicate with teammates and trying to be as mechanically sound as we can being a second year team. Last year in varsity we didn’t sub very much due to the fact we were trying to create team chemistry. This year we will be able to sub players who can fill the roles of serving, digging, hitting, and setting.”

Lady eagles hope to build on last season
T
he West Union Lady Eagles will move into their second year of volleyball under Coach Lisa Bogue and they return everyone from the 2019 inaugural season. The Lady Eagles will be a youthful group again as they have no seniors on the squad. “We are in our second year of West Union volleyball with all of our returning team members,” Bogue said. “Last year, our oldest player was in the 10th grade and this year we roll into the season with no seniors on the floor. “We will look to leadership from our juniors Josie Baird, Emma Carwyle, Anna Carwyle and sophomore Bella Brock.” West Union will use what they learned in their first season of competition and use that to improve their game. “We are trying to build on last
year’s experience and bring more roles and responsibilities to every player by giving specific jobs like passer, setter, hitter, Bogue said. “Hopefully this will bring more accountability to each player and help us to be more fluid on the floor.” Bogue has some younger players that she believes can make an immediate impact on the team and sees playing opportunities for one in particular. “Hope Herod will move up to play with high school as an eighth grader,” Bogue said. “She is a smart, athletic young lady with an amazing work ethic and she gets better each day.” Bogue mentioned some of her position players which included hitters Baird, both Carwyles, Zoey Wright, Cailin Walls and Laina Corder. Setters will be Brock, Sydney Sanders and Emma Howard while Kylee Ann Jumper and Josie Conlee will play libero.
The coronavirus has brought its own bit of trouble and uncertainty, Bogue and the Lady Eagles have been very careful and taken steps to keep everyone safe. “This season started a bit differently as the COVID challenges included masks, temps checked before all practices, hand sanitizing stations, as well as equipment needing to be cleaned and sanitized daily,” she said. Even will all of the above going on, Bogue and her youthful Lady Eagles are ready to get back into the swing of high school sports this fall. “All three of our teams (varsity, JV and junior high) have worked hard and are competing for spots,” Bogue said. “They like to push each other and hold each other accountable. “I love it and this group will be fun to watch this season. So glad we are getting to play!”

New Albany putting in work for successful season
N
ew Albany will be looking to replace their top two runners in boys from 2019 as Thomas Floyd and Jamien Terry have graduated, but Coach Alison Laney is looking for several runners to step up this season. “I will really be counting on Dawson Boyd and Trey Roten,” Laney said. Dawson is a returning sophomore who is leading our boys. “He has the most experience and he has a good work ethic. Trey is working hard to close the gap between the two. He is consistent and has a strong desire to improve.” Laney will be counting on her daughters Emma and Abby to help lead the girls team as Emma will be a senior.
“Emma Laney is our returning girl senior,” Alison said. “Last year was hard on her as she worked through a few injuries. This year she set some goals for herself and has worked hard in the off season. She seems determined to lead our girls’ team.” Coach Laney sees this as a rebuilding year for the Bulldogs as they also attempt to navigate the COVID-19 issues as well. “This is going to be a building year for us,” she said. “With only two seniors and a young team, we hope that they can provide the leadership to move us forward. “The New Albany School District has had a Covid-19 plan in place from very early on that required social distancing, masks, sanitization of equipment. We were fully expecting
the requirements over the summer as well as for the beginning of school. We have been implementing distancing and screening with health questions as well as monitoring temperatures.” All meets offer challenges and opportunities for runners, but New Albany has two in particular that they are focusing according to Laney. “The races that we expect to see good competition will be TCPS and Pontotoc. These races always have a strong field and are exciting for our runners to race in.” This is Coach Laney’s third season as head coach of the Bulldogs and she says the x-factor for New Albany is to remain injury free and to put in hard work.

Urchins need to produce early for success
E
ast Union cross country will have a bit of a blend of youth and experience for the fall 2020 season. Coach Nathan McLellen enters his 16th season at the helm of the Urchins, but he’s never quite faced anything like this year with the coronavirus situation. “We have worked really hard to keep our kids safe,” McLellen said. “We checked temps and checked for symptoms before practice, required them to bring their own water and give them the practice plan ahead of time so we would not have to gather as a group at practice.” “Both teams are a mix of youth and experienced runners and we need both groups to produce early for us to be successful.” East Union does have the luxury of two returning All-State performers in Class 2A from 2019 in Karley Conwill and Noah Johnson. “Noah Johnson and Karley Conwill
34 2020 Fall Sports Preview
are both coming off All-State, AllDivision, and All-County seasons and we are excited to have them back this year,” McLellen said. The Urchins will have several experienced runners returning with Johnson and Conwill, McLellen will be relying on several runners to set a standard for the younger group. “Kirsten Hitt, Karley Conwill, and Sunshine Fulgham are great at leading by example because of the effort they put into practice while Rachel Gentry and Sunshine Fulgham are strong vocal leaders,” McLellen said. “The guys are led by Gabe Rakestraw. His effort and dedication to the sport is special. He leads by example so well it is hard for the other guys to take a day off. Chance McLellen has stepped up and is becoming a vocal leader for our team.” East Union will have several newcomers that are expected to contribute to the team’s overall success and McLellen is anxious to
see how they perform. “Seth Johnson, Daisy Johnson, Maci McLellen, and Dakota Gentry have both had great summers and we hope they can help our varsity squads by the end of the year,” McLellen said. Despite the mix of youth and experienced runners, the Urchins are a team built on unity and their coach sees that as a great strength going forward. “We are really strong in team unity,” McLellen said. “Our kids really enjoy each other. It is not really a weakness because I believe in our youth. They have what it takes to be successful.” East Union is looking forward to the Watson Classic meet in Clinton as their most important event since it will give them a first hand look at the redesigned course that they will compete on at the 2A state competition in November.

M
yrtle girls placed three runners in the top 13 and came away with second place in the 1A Girls State Cross Country Meet at Choctaw Trails in Clinton last year with 58 points. Coach Chris Greer has the luxury of all three of his top runners returning in 2020. Maggie Moody was the top runner for the Lady Hawks as she placed sixth in a time of 22:33.8. She won the 1A state championship in 2017 as an eighth grader. Aubrey Henderson came in 11th in her time of 23:28.5 and Lexie Senn was 13th with a time of 23:51.8. All three runners were recognized as All-State with their performances. “We like having Maggie back in girls with three 9th graders - Aubrey, Lexie and Dream Carnell, Greer said. “We also have Victoria Mejia, eighth grader Carleigh Harlow coming back,
36 2020 Fall Sports Preview
also Abigail Fulcher and it’s good to have junior Caylie Streich back.” Streich has run previously for the Lady Hawks, but she may be best known for her pitching prowess for the Myrtle fastpitch team. Myrtle boys placed sixth overall at state last season and Greer will be replacing several of his top runners after graduation depleted the ranks. “Hunter Page (sophomore) and Will Greer (junior) will lead us and we look for juniors Ethan Neal and McKinley Lindsay to contribute,” Greer said. “We have two eighth graders that will help us after the middle school championship, Westlee Ash and Caleb Thomas.” Greer believes both of his teams will be competitive in 2020. He points to the meets at Saltillo, Pontotoc and his own Myrtle event as great meets with plenty of competition. “Our girls team is young, but
experienced while our boys team is young, no seniors,” Greer said. Greer is in his 28th year of coaching and 22nd year of coaching cross country at Myrtle. The Myrtle cross country program was actually started by him. Myrtle has plenty to look forward to in the future with their younger runners as abound for the Hawks. “Our boys middle school team should be great contenders with Westlee Ash, Gabe Mejia, Ray Moody, Brady Rakestraw and Cody Adair,” Greer said. “Our girls that are competing for the junior high championship on October 13 are Kaitlyn Fulcher, Morgan Greer, Marley Floyd and Riley Meyer. Myrtle is doing their part to take the necessary precautions by following the state protocols during the coronavirus and are attempting to social distance as much as possible

Eagles have passion to run and compete
W
est Union’s cross country team will be under the guidance of first year coach Angelia Churchill this season. However, Churchill is no stranger to running as she has been involved on a personal basis for many years. “This is my first year as a coach, but I have been a runner since 2005 and my passion for these athletes runs deep,” Churchill said. Churchill has some returning runners coming back from 2019 as well as some young runners that competed in junior high last season with success. “The 2020 West Union Cross Country Team is a blend of veterans and youth,” Churchill said. “Our team is showing stride this year! It is hard to predict what the final outcomes will be, and my main focus is keeping
them safe and well! “Our athletes that ranked last year are definitely ready for XC 2020 such as J.Q. Willard, Ella Little, Emma and Anna Carwyle, and Max Smithey. Underclassmen that are fierce newcomers are Trey Haynes, Brodie Moore and Aiden James.” Churchill will have her runners competing at various meets in the season, but the Eagles have a couple of races circled on the calendar as important contests. “The key meets that we at West Union look forward to in 2020 will be the Myrtle Invitational and Saltillo Invitational,” she said. “The primary strength for West Union is passion for the sport. Our entire team loves what we do, therefore we do it well.” Churchill says she has had to address the coronavirus pandemic along with her team as it has brought
new challenges to the sport. “Both cross country meets and practices are being conducted quite differently this year due to COVID-19,” she said. “Athletes must always follow social distancing during practice. As well, foggers are used to sanitize equipment between uses. Safety for our students always comes first. “Meets will spread out the time frames for various schools with results only being sent to coaches via email after the meet closes. All athletes, coaches, and fans will be required to wear mask on the sidelines. Our students remain thrilled that we will have a cross country season and that MHSAA has approved competition with guidelines. As a coach, I am waiting to participate in meets that are in September and October and holding off on August competitions.”
