Demonstrating Our Positive Impact

Our Club programs keep kids safe, boost student success, and help parents keep their jobs. Kids achieve more, productivity goes up, and risky behavior goes down.

The Need In the State of Mississippi, 15% of high school students fail to graduate on time. 3,292 teens between the ages of 16-19 have dropped out of high school. 1

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

GOOD CHARACTER & CITIZENSHIP

The Need 8,385 youth in Mississippi had interactions with the juvenile justice system for a total of 15,578 offenses.2 19.5% of Mississippi public high school students were bullied on school property.3 2 www.datacenter.kidscount.org 3 www.msdh.ms.gov

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

What We Do We conduct engaging homework help programs for Club members in elementary, middle and high school. Power Hour: Making Minutes Count help members achieve academic success by providing homework help, tutoring and encouraging members to become self-directed learners.

What We Do

What We Do

12,000 of Mississippi’s youth, ages 12 to 17 report abusing drugs and alcohol.4

We challenge members to become healthy and active by learning new ways to eat nutritionally, manage stress, maintain physical fitness and form positive relationships with peers.

4 http://Datacenter.kidscount.org 5 http://msdh.ms.gov

 Members utilized the Power Hour program.  Among our teen-aged members, 100% of High School Seniors graduated this past year.  Club members maintained a 3.0 Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) from the previous school year.

Our Impact

We empower youth, promote character Members were involved in character and develop leadership skills through development programming. These positive group experiences focusing on programs facilitated the cultivation of: community service, academic success  Good character and career preparation through  Effective leadership programs like Torch and Keystone Clubs  Civic engagement and Career Launch. We provide young  Employment opportunities people the opportunity to contribute something of value to others fostering Developing productive, responsible and lifelong civic engagement. caring citizens.

The Need

11.4% of Mississippi public high school students have been physically forced to have sexual intercourse.5

Our Impact

The SMART Moves program exposes members to activities designed to develop decision-making and critical thinking skills, as well as learn how to resist or avoid the use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and premature sexual activity.

Our Impact  Members participated in prevention activities and developed skills needed to adopt attitudes and behaviors necessary to lead healthy lives.  Members became more physically active through activities that develop ability, confidence, and motivation to remain physically fit.  In 2020, there were no teen pregnancies among active members.

Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi keeps activity fees low so that all children can attend. Contributions by generous companies, foundations and individuals are each essential lifelines for providing our promise to our youth. The Annual Campaign is one way that we close the gap between memberships fees and the real cost of delivering services. With a goal of $200,000 in unrestricted funding, the campaign is 22% of the Club’s budget. Our 2020– 2021 Campaign is being led by volunteers who care about our kids and support our mission. Your funds donated to the campaign will allow the Club to: 1. Provide additional scholarship support to more children. 2. Strengthen programs that empower kids by increasing academic performance and improving healthy behavior. 3. Uphold our desire to serve those who need us most by exploring new opportunities for growth.

BGCNMS RECEIVES MISSISSIPPI ARTS COMMISSION GRANT Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi has been awarded a $4,750 grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the more than $1.4 million in grants MAC awarded in Fiscal Year 2022 and will be used to support the organization’s youth ballroom dance program – Dance Stars. Annually, participants of the Dance Stars program perform at Dance Like The Stars, providing a standout performance of the evening. Last year, their virtual performance, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was viewed more than 5,000 times. MAC grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. “The state’s arts community has displayed such resiliency during tumultuous times, and we are very pleased to provide grants

to these worthy artists,” said Sarah Story, executive director of MAC. “Mississippi’s artistic legacy was built through the talents of its exceptionally creative citizens. These funds help support the next generation of amazing artists and ensure that the story of artistic excellence in our state lives on.” The Mississippi Arts Commission is a state agency serving more than two million people through grants and special initiatives that enhance communities, assist artists and arts organizations, promote arts education and celebrate Mississippi’s cultural heritage. MAC is funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mississippi Endowment for the Arts at the Community Foundation for Mississippi and other private sources. 2020 Judges Choice

Keri McMillan Developed in 2006, Dance Like The Stars is a community special event which raises funds for Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi. Held annually at the BancorpSouth Arena, celebrities are recruited from surrounding communities and partnered with professional instructors at Tupelo’s The Dance Studio. More than 150 community volunteers have participated as celebrity dancers. In addition to taking time out of their busy schedules to learn ballroom dancing techniques, these local celebrities raise sponsorship dollars. The celebrity raising the most funds is awarded the Grand Champion Award. Also, our panel of celebrity judges select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards in our Judges Choice Category. In 2020, with the support of local celebrities, an online silent auction and our community, more than $259,000 was raised, to support Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi. Lisa Settlemires of Ripley was named event Grand Champion, raising over $54,600 for our mission. Also, Kerri McMillan of Mooreville was named the 2020 Judges Choice winner for her salsa performance to “CONGA” by Gloria Estefan. Dance Like The Stars has truly become one of North Mississippi’s “hottest tickets”. This year, Dance 2021 returns to its normal fashion – a gala event including, dinner, ballroom dance routines from each local celebrity and open dancing with music provided by The Drew White Orchestra. Meet our 2021 dancers, professional instructors and our young Boys & Girls Club Dance Stars, in this edition of Dance Like The Stars 2021.
