The days when a spigot and spout where enough to claim you had the latest in indoor amenities have gone the way of the Model T. For the modern household, calling forth water in your bathroom is a technical triumph as well as a design indulgence. You may be what you eat, but more and more, your home is defined by its built-in fixtures. From shiny to matte, imported to domestic, your faucet says a lot about your style and can be the focal point in your bath or kitchen. New materials, designs, and multi-media add-ons are making showering and even just filling a water glass an event. It may be simple H2O, but if you're into design, embrace green technology, or like the idea of getting the latest and greatest, your bath- room or kitchen faucet may be ground zero for realizing your unique vision. Remember that commercial in which a well-heeled matron challenges her architect to build a house around her futuristic looking faucet? Never underestimate the value of getting the details right. Take a look at the world of bathroom faucets, their exterior finishes, inner workings and the ways they bring water to your fingertips with the turn of a knob -- and sometimes not even that. We've come a long way from priming the pump and waiting for the water to run clear. Whether you 4 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
want a light show with your morning shave or a sink that looks like a crystal serving bowl, faucets help deliver the goods. Every kitchen needs a sink and faucet. When it comes to selecting these staples, style is secondary. Select a sink and faucet that will work well and withstand years of daily use. Kitchen sinks are typically made from stainless steel, enamel-coated cast iron, solid surfaces and composites. When shopping for a sink, keep in mind that lower-gauge stainless steel makes for a better quality sink. Some people find stainless steel sinks noisy , but that's a problem that can be addressed by choosing a design featuring sound-absorption technology. Once the standard in kitchen sinks, enamel-coated cast iron still has a place in today's kitchen. However, enamel can scratch and wear over time, which may not make this sink the best choice for people who are rough on sinks. Composite sinks, a newer style of sink, are another option for kitchens. There are several types of composite sinks on the market, with polyester/acrylic being just one of them. Coming in at a lower price point and with many colors from which to choose, this sink might appeal to homeowners on a budget. However, polyester/acrylic sinks aren't as durable as
other sink options and drop-in sinks can be more difficult to clean. With the great number of faucets on the market, there is a design for everyone. Style is strictly a personal taste issue. Your faucet does need to include a spray arm for filling pots with water or rinsing the sink, whether it's part of the spout or a separate piece. Also, consider other convenient extras, like a garbage disposal and hot water dispenser. The expert sales team at 1717 Showroom can help you create the bath and kitchen of your dreams with such brands as Rohl, Toto, Delta, Santech, and Shaw, in addition to having access to hundreds of other brands. We can create a look that is just right for your home. The possibilities are endless. When choosing a pharmacy for your family, there should be other considerations aside from a convenient location or even cost. After all, there is much at stake in selecting the right pharmacy and the right pharmacist. You must remember, this is a person you, your spouse, and your children may be dealing with for years. Your pharmacist, first and foremost should be someone you know and trust. According to the pharmacist.org web site, you should give as much consideration to choosing your pharmacist as you do to choosing a doctor. Pharmacists are health care professionals specializing in medicines and their appropriate use. Because of this, your pharmacist plays an important role in your personal health care and the health care of your family. The importance of assessing personal service in selecting a pharmacist is considered critical by most patients. In that regard, here are some questions to ponder: · How accessible is the pharmacist? · Is he or she easy to talk to and willing to hear your concerns? · During what hours is the pharmacist available to answer your questions? It is important to choose one pharmacist with whom you can establish an ongoing relationship. Also, by choosing one pharmacy, a complete record of the medicines you take is in one place, making them easier to coordinate and manage. Your pharmacist can alert you to possible drug interactions- particularly if you take a number of different medications- help you track refills on important prescriptions, and provide any necessary details on short notice. It is wise to consider your entire family’s

· Does the pharmacy handle the drugs you expect to be taking?
pharmacy needs. Often, a pharmacist can help you with special circumstances, such as when you are taking care of an elderly relative. If you have an aging parent that lives nearby, you might ask, for example, if it is possible to deliver prescriptions to their home and send the bill to you. Not all pharmacies and or pharmacists provide the same service. All pharmacies are required to meet minimum standards. Most, however, offer services and conveniences beyond the minimum requirements. When choosing a pharmacist, and/or a pharmacy, you should evaluate your needs and make the selection to meet those needs. Here are some other suggested questions to consider: · Does the pharmacist take time to answer your questions in a manner that you understand? · Is the pharmacy open during hours that fit your schedule? · Does the pharmacy deliver? If so, are there restrictions or additional charges? · If there is an emergency, does the pharmacy provide after hours service or a special emergency telephone number?
There may be a higher cost for additional services or conveniences such as delivery, after hours and emergency service. Real value however, comes not only from the price of your prescriptions, but from having your specific needs met at a fair price. It is also very helpful to become thoroughly familiar with your insurance benefits as they concern your prescriptions. For example, some prescription benefit plans will only pay for the dispensing of a certain days supply of medication. If your physician issues a prescription for a larger supply of medication, the pharmacy will have to decrease the quantity dispensed or your insurance company will not pay for it. Obviously, since your physician is issuing the prescriptions, it is important to advise your physician concerning any prescriptions restrictions under your benefit plan. Not every pharmacy will accept your prescription drug card. A pharmacy must sign a contract to provide services for each prescription benefit health plan. The owner of the pharmacy must review each contract and decide which insurance plans it will accept. If the pharmacy does not accept your prescription card, the pharmacy probably does not have a signed contract with your health insurance provider. In some cases, pharmacy owners may take steps to add your prescription benefit plan if asked to do so. Once you weigh all the factors and choose a pharmacy, it is strongly recommended that you use this pharmacy for all of your prescription needs. This allows you to receive the greatest benefit from the “screening” for drug interactions, etc., by your pharmacist since this one pharmacy has all of your prescription drug records.

While hospice is not a typical topic of conversation, it can be one of the most important choices a family may ever have to make. We believe it is important to find the right fit. Our team has put together some questions and answers that may help you explore your options.
HOW DO WE KNOW IF IT IS TIME FOR HOSPICE?
Medicare has firm criteria that Medicaid and other insurances follow for Hospice eligibility. A referral to Hospice may be appropriate when the focus has shifted from curative measures to comfort measures. One of the most common sentiments from families who have been helped by hospice care is that they wish they had known about hospice or been referred to hospice sooner. To consider appropriateness for you or a loved one, we encourage you to ask about hospice in a conversation with your doctor and/or feel free to call us to discuss your situation in more detail.
WHO CAN REFER TO HOSPICE?
One simple call is all it takes. Referrals may be made to the hospice program by the patient’s physician, hospital, nursing home or by the patient/caregiver.
IF I AM IN A HOSPITAL THAT HAS A HOSPICE OR IF MY DOCTOR WORKS FOR A PARTICULAR HOSPICE, DO I HAVE TO USE THAT HOSPICE? You always have a choice of providers when leaving your hospital to go home. We welcome patients from all hospitals in our North Mississippi coverage area. WHAT SERVICES DOES HOSPICE PROVIDE?
The patient’s care team typically consists of a hospice medical director (physician) who signs off on and is aware of all care, the patient’s physician of choice (routine doctor), registered nurses, certified nursing assistants, a social worker and a chaplain. The Sanctuary Hospice team is proud to have nurses who are trained experts in pain management, social workers who provide great resources, nursing assistants who pamper our patients with personal care and chaplains who offer non-denominational 8 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
visits specializing in end of life spiritual needs (if desired). Medical equipment, medications and supplies related to the hospice diagnosis are also provided by the hospice you choose. Different hospices may provide different equipment options. Sanctuary Hospice does not choose our medical equipment company or pharmacy for our patients. We allow that choice to be theirs. We provide hospital beds, wheel chairs, oxygen, bed side toilets, shower chairs and much more. Bandages, dressings, undergarments and pads, catheters, etc... may be needed for various patients and these supplies are given without limits to our patients.
WHEN AND WHERE ARE SERVICES PROVIDED?
We provide hospice services wherever you are. Private home, contracted nursing home, assisted living facilities and also at our hospice house… your care is directed by a registered nurse who will work with you to schedule nursing visits and coordinate other team member visits based on your individual needs and wishes. We are also available for call 24/7 and will make visits whenever needed.
WHO OWNS THE HOSPICE?
Some hospices are locally owned and managed, some are managed by national corporations and some like Sanctuary – may be not-for-profit. Simply put, that means that our hospice is governed by a LOCAL board of directors living and working right here in North Mississippi. They are not compensated for their contributions and work diligently to ensure that our staff is delivering the very best hospice care to our patients.
DOES THE HOSPICE PROVIDE CONTINUOUS HOME-CARE DURING CRISIS PERIODS?
when the time comes that it is needed. Sanctuary Hospice is proud to offer this service to our patients and will be happy to discuss it in more detail if desired.
WHY CHOOSE SANCTUARY HOSPICE?
Sanctuary Hospice is unique for several reasons: • We are a locally governed, not-forprofit ministry striving daily to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those we serve. • We offer our services in both an inpatient setting at our hospice house or in the patient’s home. We can always work with our families to make the transition from home to the hospice house if and when it is needed. • We do not limit supplies or visits to our patients, but rather tailor our care plan to their individual needs. • We take the time needed with our patients and families. Our nurses keep a very low patient ratio allowing them to spend extra one-one-one time with their patients, getting to know them, and not feeling rushed to go to the next visit or appointment. Though researching a hospice may seem like a very daunting task, know that you are entrusting the chosen agency with some of the most precious moments you will ever experience. For more information, please feel free to call our staff at 877-845-2111, visit us on the web at www.sanctuaryhospice.org or visit the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organizations’ website at www.nhpco.org.

Are people nervous to go to the chiropractor? Yes, most people are nervous. Why, because most people have no idea what to expect. First and foremost, in most cases there is nothing to be nervous about. If you are one of those people who are afraid to hear the "crack" of joints, you have to understand that this is most likely the best thing for you, if you are looking for a chiropractor already. If you are nervous, a chiropractor should make you feel as comfortable as possible before proceeding with any adjusting procedures. This brings me to the title of this article, "How to Choose a Chiropractor." Not every chiropractor is created equal. With this being said, the first thing to do is your homework. Find out a little bit about the doctor first. Did he/she go to a reputable school? What is his/her background? Is their technique suitable for your case? Is this a likable person? An important question, because if you have waited too long to get treatment you might see this person a few times a week for the next month, so make sure you like him or her. OK, you have selected a doctor and now it's time to call and make the appointment. Does the receptionist sound friendly? Does she do anything she can to try to help? You will most likely be seeing this person a lot so she should become a friendly, helpful face to you. You have an appointment and you
arrive at the office. Does the office look clean? Does it look professional both inside and out. Does the receptionist/chiropractic assistant greet you with a smile? The office should be an extension of the doctor/s. You should be prepared to spend around an hour or more in the office for your first visit. The appropriate consultation should be done to find out exactly what you are in the office for, history of the chief complaint, etc. Once the consultation is done, the doctor will most likely do an exam. At this time he/she should put you in various positions and motions to try to aggravate your pain and find where it is coming from.
Appropriate neurological tests should be performed as well, depending on your case. At this point the doctor could choose from a few options. The doctor may decide xrays are in order for your case or he/she could give you a report of findings (ROF) or the doctor could wait until the next appointment for this. If the doctor decides to do it on the first visit, they are most likely wanting to start treatment right away. After the doc explains to you what he/she thinks is wrong with you and gives you the best treatment options, you should have a chance to think about it and accept or decline treatment at that time. Another option the doctor has is to make another appointment, most likely for the next day to give you your ROF. After this the doctor will start treatment with your permission. If the doctor is unsure of your condition or does not think he/she can help you, proper arrangements should be made to make a referral to another health care professional that could help you. In summary, make sure the entire office promotes a friendly, professional atmosphere. Most likely, you are there in pain and want to feel as comfortable as possible. Also the doctor should be likable because you might be seeing a lot of them.

IN PAIN?
The Lighting Gallery by Nesco is located on McCullough Boulevard in Tupelo, and has a friendly, experienced staff to help you with your lighting needs. Do you have a room that looks dull and tired? Can’t deal with the mess of paint and remodeling? Change your lamps! It’s a simple fix for a room with no focus or flair. It’s not complicated, but understanding a few terms and concepts will help you decide what improvements to make. First, think about what you do in the room. Do you watch TV, read, work on hobbies or crafts, welcome guests or enjoy your meals in this space? How’s your eyesight? Do you prefer a bright, lively spot, or would you rather soften an area with gentle light? Any room can have multiple lighting requirements. Assuming that your overall light scheme is adequate (with recessed cans, chandeliers, or ceiling mounted fixtures), here are some functional, decorative tips:
CHOOSE LAMPS WITH HIGHER WATTAGE OR 3-WAY SWITCHES AND BULBS FOR READING, CRAFTS AND PAPERWORK.
Desk lamps, table lamps, and floor lamps will help dramatically. Follow your taste trends here. Contemporary or traditional styles, and everything in between, can be a design statement as well as functional. Most table lamps should be placed over the shoulder of the person sitting nearest the light, so that shadows won’t fall awkwardly. Sizes vary, but the scale of the lamp should complement the size of the
12 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
room and furniture. A large sofa or bed requires lamps that can “hold their own,” visually, and side tables to anchor that scale. Lamps don’t have to match, but the scale should be compatible. Consider light output when you see the lampshade, too. Solid, pale neutrals are brightest. Look for interesting colors, textures and silhouettes in the lamps you choose, because you need impact! Glass, mercury glass, and mirrored finishes add sparkle, too.
CHOOSE A UNIQUE, WHIMSICAL OR
ESPECIALLY ELEGANT LAMP FOR AN ENTRANCE FOYER, HALLWAY OR POWDER ROOM.
You’re trying to make a design statement in these spaces, and the lighting can be softer here. It’s fine to select a lamp with a patterned or unusual shade, since you don’t need as much usable light. Again, scale matters. Consider the setting, and use the lamp as a vertical element in a grouping on the table or vanity. Go for color!
ADD DIMENSIONAL LIGHT TO THE DINING ROOM, KITCHEN OR BATHROOM.
but they make the room special each time you enter it. A tiny lamp is charming on a vanity and can be a lovely night-light as well. If you can, find a serving area or countertop in the kitchen that would welcome a small “statement” lamp. It will change the mood quickly.
USE THE CORRECT BULBS, ALWAYS.
Experiment with halogen, LED or compact fluorescent bulbs to compare the lumens (brightness), not watts (energy produced) and the color of the light. Bluish-tint light is ugly, no matter how energy-efficient it may be, so look for bulbs labeled as “warm” light. Never exceed the recommended wattage for the lamp, or you may burn your shade. (Or house!) Another tip: Use the same kind of bulb in all the lamps in the room so that they are similar when lit. Who knew that light could have so many colors? At the Lighting Gallery, you have lots of choices. If it doesn’t work, return it and try another! We can even help you freshen up a favorite lamp with a new lampshade. We want you to love the light in your life.
You may not need more light, but the pizzazz it adds qualifies it as significant design element! Slender, tall buffet lamps on a sideboard are classic and always in style. Splurge on fabulous shades and profiles here; you may not see them every day,

Miracle-Ear Hearing Aid Centers • • • •
Tupelo New Albany Pontotoc • Corinth Iuka • Olive Branch
Hearing loss is one of society’s most common ailments. It can occur from a combination of factors: heredity, aging, disease and exposure to high levels of noise over the course of a lifetime. Hearing loss may range from a mild loss such as a ringing in the ears known as tinnitus, to severe cases of near or complete deafness. These factors can make it difficult for someone to understand others, distinguish sounds in their everyday environment or follow a conversation. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communicative Diseases, 40 to 50 percent of those over the age of 65 experience hearing loss. It is important to have a hearing exam and purchase quality hearing instruments when coping with a hearing loss. Typically those who fail to address their hearing issues can end up frustrated with daily life or even depressed. “Not being able to hear everything clearly is very frustrating. You don’t understand what is being said at the dinner table, at the movies, or at family gatherings. You feel lost and have to rely on your spouse or a friend to repeat what was said. It is easy to become angry and discouraged,” said Richard Hardy, owner of Miracle-Ear Hearing Aid Center, Tupelo, Miss. and hearing aids wearer.
HERE IS HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT HEARING AID FOR YOU: • Overcome the stigma of hearing aids. Many people fail to act because they are embarrassed to wear hearing aids. In fact, only 20 percent of people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wear one, according to the NIDCD. Hearing aids do not indicate a weakness or a handicap, and today's models are so small that it's likely many people won't even realize you're wearing one. They may, however, notice that you're more outgoing, participating in conversations and hearing much better. • Scheduling your Miracle-Ear hearing test is the first step toward enjoying a better life. THINGS TO REMEMBER •Miracle-Ear is the brand Americans have grown to trust when it comes to hearing aids. With premium service, the latest technology, and the most discreet hearing aids in the market, Miracle-Ear Hearing Solutions help those who have trouble hearing, enjoy a better quality of life. Founded in 1948 by World War II triple ace fighter pilot Ken Dahlberg, Miracle-Ear was the first to offer an all-in-the-ear hear-
ing aid. Miracle-Ear was also the first to offer digital hearing aids across our entire product line, and our tradition of industryleading technology continues today with the Mirage, our fully invisible hearing aid, and the AquaviTM, a waterproof and dustproof hearing aid. • When evaluating hearing aids, the price of the hearing aid is definitely a factor to consider when determining what hearing aid to purchase. Consider the following. How long will my hearing aid last? How much do I anticipate paying for aftercare services like adjustments and maintenance? Am I willing to pay more for a quality product? For example, if you get the lowest cost hearing aids, but they break down every year, forcing you to purchase yet another pair, are you really saving money? What if your hearing aid is malfunctioning, or you need it adjusted, are you willing to pay for office visits, and how many? With MiracleEar hearing aids, almost every product offered comes with a 3-year limited warranty, and aftercare is FREE FOR LIFE, which helps you reduce the overall costs you may have to occur to address your hearing loss. • Miracle-Ear has been America’s Most Trusted Hearing Aid Brand for over 65 years, 26 of those years in North Mississippi. Miracle-Ear has over 1,200 locations in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, with 16 of those locations right here in the Mid-South. Choosing insurance coverage can be a confusing and even scary process. With so many different companies selling insurance, it is crucial to have an experienced agent to help guide you through the process. It is, on the other hand, doubly important to choose someone you can trust to keep your best interest at heart. If you are lucky enough to meet someone who you find trustworthy, you may even be able to save money on all of your insurance policies, assuming the person you choose has the ability to offer everything you need. Kim Arnold, owner of All Affordable Insurance located in Saltillo, Miss. is your go-to gal for all of your insurance needs. She can sell anything from health insurance to home insurance. If you need it, she is licensed to offer it to you! She has been in the insurance business for thirteen years. She services clients all over the state of Mississippi with clients as far north as Southaven and as far south as Meridian. Her business is located in Saltillo, but certainly not limited to that region! Kim runs a very family oriented agency and gives all credit for her success to prayer, faith, and belief in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Kim loves meeting new people and always makes sure her clients are taken care of in every aspect. She gives them the best possible coverage they can get and stays within their budget. She will basically tailor make you a policy that fits YOUR needs. When looking for an insurance agent, the best place to start is by asking family, friends and even co-workers for referrals. A referral from a client is the best compliment
an insurance agent can get! This tells the agent not only that their customers are satisfied, but they are happy to recommend the agent to someone else. At All Affordable Insurance, they take great pride in their
referral business. In fact, referral business is the number one way they attract new customers. Your agent is there to help you address your needs. Needs you know about, and possibly even ones you do not. A good agent will take the time to identify areas you may not yet have considered. For example, you may know you need to buy life insurance, but do you know how much you actually need, and what’s the best way to go about getting it? At All Affordable Insurance, Kim will ask many questions because each situation is different. There may be discounts that apply to you that you are not aware of, or coverage that you need but don’t understand. She always looks at what her clients request, and tries to suggest the best option by showing them a package that takes care of all insurance needs as opposed to just one. Kim is licensed to sell all types of insurance, so once you meet her, you’ll never have to
shop around for an agent again! Another extremely important thing to consider when choosing an agent is to find someone who can explain to you exactly what your policy does, and perhaps more importantly what your policy does not do. This can prevent any surprises when the time comes for you to process a claim. Your agent should periodically review your coverage as well. As your life changes, so do your insurance needs. For example, when buying a new home, you may want to purchase a large insurance policy to pay off the mortgage in case something was to happen. After the mortgage is paid off, you no longer need that much coverage and can drop it if you wish. At All Affordable Insurance, Kim reviews every client’s coverage when the time comes for the policy to renew. This way she can add or take away coverage as needs change. Life events such as having a baby, buying a car or your children finally graduating college and getting coverage of their own, can greatly affect your insurance situation. With Kim, you won’t have to worry about a thing! She will take care of everything for you! Lastly, you definitely need to know what to do when the time comes to file a claim. You should know who to call and how to reach them after hours and on weekends. It is always wise to ask about the agent’s role in claims filing and tracking the claim after it has been filed. Sound confusing? That’s what Kim Arnold and the staff at All Affordable Insurance are here to do! Take the confusion and worry away from you, and deal with the process so you never have to attempt it alone!

The Furniture Outlet The Furniture Outlet is located at 4915 Cliff Gookin Boulevard in Tupelo.
Buying furniture is usually the third largest investment a family will make. There is no wonder that furniture shopping can make what should be a day of fun into one of anxiety and confusion. Lets face it, when it comes to furniture most of us know what we like. We just have a hard time putting our styles together. In the past 10 years, here at the Furniture Outlet, we have found that the biggest fear issue for a consumer is making a mistake. It’s a big investment. They want to be comfortable with the purchase that they are about to make. They not only want to be happy with their new look but also want their family and friends to be impressed too. What’s most important is finding a store and sales person that you are completely comfortable with during the buying process.
PRICE AND BUDGET With all the choices consumers have today in the furniture business, it’s no wonder people rely on decorators and designers. There are 100’s of styles with just as many prices. Before you venture out to shop do a little home work first. How many rooms are you going to furnish? What pieces do you have that you want to keep? What pieces will you need to replace or buy? What colors are you working with on your walls? What about your floors? Come up with the pieces you want for each room. Next, come up with a budget. As with all budgets , nothing is written in stone. But it will help keep you close to 18 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
your goal. Most important, shop around. Find the store and sales person you are most comfortable. Tell them your game plan. Start with the most important room first. Remember, higher prices do not always mean better furniture. Sit in the sofa or chair. Lay on the mattress. You are looking for what works for you not for the sales person. Stick with the room you start with first. Don’t jump from room to room. You will be less likely to get off track. Once you’ve completed each area, ask the associate to go over each room with you. Make sure that you have all pieces you need for each room. Go over the pricing. Ask if there are any additional fees for delivery or warranty. Delivery fees for most stores and are usually added. Most good manufactures offer factory warranties but always ask. Today most retailers offer additional warranties that cost a little more on the front end but will save you some heart ach in the future.
pieces, you might want to shop around. They are just trying to make a sale. At The Furniture Outlet, we have associates with backgrounds from manufacturing to design as well as sales. We can make sure the investment you make with us will be something you are proud of for the life of your furniture. Come in and see our new location at 4915 Cliff Gookin. Let us earn your next furniture investment.
CUSTOMER SATISFACTION As with any product or service, your satisfaction and comfort level with the store and your sales person is what’s most important. If you are not comfortable with your sales person you might want to look for another store. Finding a good sales person that understands your needs and then matches that with the right product is a talent. Knowing what your customer is comfortable with in regards to budget, style, color is most important. If your sales person does not ask about colors or others NORTHEAST MISSISSIPPI DAILY JOURNAL | HOW TO GUIDE

First, start by asking local people that have color and hair styles that are attractive to you, where they get their hair services. Word of mouth is the best way to get an idea of a salon you are interested in. And in most cases people will gladly tell you who styles, cuts, and colors their hair. Second, call the salons you are interested in and feel free to ask as many questions as you would like. For example, ask prices, stylists, training/experience, location, and services provided. In most cases a high-end salon with a well trained staff is going to cost more and be harder to get an appointment with than the walk-ins welcome, 20 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
quick cut salons that are less expensive. Also in a high-end salon you are more likely to have more time spent on you because with higher prices the stylist is free to give you that great finishing touch. Think quality over quantity. Where a quick in and quick out salon is going to service more clients at a quicker pace to make up for their lower prices. Choosing a salon by location is important as well because a salon closer to home will make it easier to get to an appointment. Also choose a salon that offers other services you receive on a regular basis like massages, manicures, pedicures, or waxing.
Not only does this save time, a lot of salons will discount several services together. Don't be afraid to book a consultation to meet with a potential stylist and to get a good feel for the salon. A good atmosphere, cleanliness, and clientele will give you a good idea of what type of salon you will be choosing. A clean salon is a good indicator of clean tools and sanitized implements. Also ask how long the salon has been in business.

prepare our Kindergarten through 2nd graders for Common Core
As parents of a 4-year old and a 12-year old, my wife Monica and I are interested in how to best prepare our sons for the dramatic changes that lie ahead in education. The Common Core State Standards, commonly known as Common Core, will be in place in 46 states, including Mississippi. The state has required districts like ours to fully implement Common Core by the 2014-15 school year in grades Kindergarten through 12th. They will indeed change the landscape of how students are taught. In the Tupelo Schools, Standards are fully phased-in for Kindergarten through 2nd grade classrooms and will be implemented in grades 3rd through 12th this coming year. The goal is to provide a clear and consistent understanding of what students are expected to learn in English language arts/literacy and mathematics; Standards in the subjects of science and social studies will be developed as well. Designed to be deep, robust and relevant to the real world, these Standards will reflect what is needed by grade - for our children to succeed in college and in their careers. It will give parents and teachers alike a solid roadmap on what knowledge and skills students should master each year. In the elementary years when educators focus intensely on literacy, Common Core will stretch students to understand what they are reading while they are actually learning to read. Naturally, this requires reading comprehension at a younger age. Much of the learning content taught will be a grade ahead of where students are taught now. We will observe them having to justify answers with more writing and not just multiple choice responses. As parents, we know that learning does not end in the classroom. There are three universal and practical suggestions to help parents of any child in Kindergarten through 2nd grade transition to Common Core. First, find a time that works for your family’s schedule to read with your child every day. Ask him or her which part of the story he or she liked best. Second, try to create a quiet place in your home for your child so that he or she can concentrate on homework in an uninterrupted fashion. Third, when conversing, use a vocabulary two years above your child’s age and explain unfamiliar words to him or her.
Below are a few grade-level suggestions to help your child:
FOR YOUR KINDERGARTENER:
• While driving in your car or shopping at the grocery store, make your child aware of the environmental print around him or her • Try and sit down with your child at least once a week for 15 minutes while he or she works on homework • Ask your child questions that require counting up to 20 items • Ask your child details about his or her day at school, daycare or from an event
FOR YOUR FIRST GRADER:
• Ask your child to describe an event and to offer a few relevant details • Help your child break down a word and separate the sounds within the word • Pick a “word of the day” each day starting with a different letter • When putting away toys, count the toys as they are being stored and count what is left to be stored
FOR YOUR SECOND GRADER:
• Continue listening to your child read and assist by reading aloud every other paragraph • Encourage your child to read to younger siblings or other children you know • Practice phonics by playing rhyming games (ie., what rhymes with..?) • When saving for a purchase, compare the cost of the item to the amount saved thus far
These new Standards will present us all with a challenging yet invigorating educational experience. Parent, family, and community involvement are particularly critical in this transition. Our district will be offering parent workshops on this topic throughout the coming school year. I hope you’re able to join us for one of these meetings to learn more. For further suggestions to help parents with children in Kindergarten through 12th grade, please go to the “parents” tab at www.tupeloschools.com. If you are interested in a full listing of the Common Core State Standards, visit www.corestandards.org.

It can be a tedious chore, but mowing the lawn is a summertime ritual. Purchasing the right kind of lawn mower can transform your weekly mowing into an easier and more efficient experience. The right machine can simplify the job while making your lawn healthy and neat.
Lawn Size
When deciding on a new lawn mower, remember to compare models, costs and features. Consider who will be mowing the yard the most and compare the weight and power of a lawn mower. An extremely heavy or awkward machine may make it more difficult to pass the chore onto a younger family member. The size of your lawn is also a deciding factor. A more powerful model may be more efficient when taking on larger lawns. Choose a model that will be able to uphold your landscaping expectations. Look for a lawn mower with an edge and access to landscaping obstacles, such as trees and fences. This will get you more precise edging. Choose a gas- or electricpowered rotary mower that cuts with a cir24 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
cular blade that rotates under a protective housing if you have a large lawn composed of grasses such as bluegrass and fescue. These typically don’t need to be cut shorter than two inches high. However, if you have grass such as Bermuda that needs to be cut shorter than two inches, you may opt for a gas-powered reel mower. For a smaller lawn, consider a push reel mower that cuts with a scissor like action of rotating blades passing over a stationary knife. Self-propelled mowers can be beneficial when dealing with a hilly lawn. They come in two varieties: front and rear drive. Of course a riding lawn mower transforms large lawns into a much more doable job. Choose a mower that will allow you to set a comfortable pace. If you don’t enjoy seeing grass clippings, consider a mulching mower. Most lawn mowers can mulch, but higher-end mowers can recycle the clippings back into your turf more efficiently, leaving less evidence. Mulching mowers can cut clippings so small that clumps can disappear into the lawn.
COMPARISONS
Rotary mowers are considered the most popular type. They can be lightweight, and you can sharpen the blades yourself. Reel mowers, on the other hand, will need to be taken to a lawn mower shop for future sharpening. Electric mowers are typically more environmentally friendly and are slowly increasing in popularity. Rechargeable types eliminate the need for dragging a cord around.
ACCESSORIES
Keep in mind the lawn mower’s bag. Rear bags can come in handy in the spring and fall when you need to collect leaves. Rear bags are easier to attach and remove than side-mounted bags and can hold more. A low bag might drag the ground when you lift the front wheels or when turning. This may cause earlier wear and tear. Lastly, watch for an easily adjustable cutting height feature. You should be able to vary a mower’s cutting height according to season. Choose a mower with clearly marked settings.

Hayley Stone is the owner of The Blonde Pistol. 101 W. Main St. Baldwyn, MS 365-5200 Just like a bad reputation, your style can speak volumes about you and your personality. Question… what is your style screaming about you from the rooftops? You can be assured that once you find the perfect place to shop, not in a chain store, but somewhere that the clothes and accessories are hand-picked for you by the owner, and YOUR very own personal stylist, you’ll be well on your way to style bliss! And this is not nearly as hard as you might imagine. First, let’s meet Hayley Stone, owner of The Blonde Pistol Boutique in Baldwyn, Miss. Hayley was born and raised in Baldwyn. At age 23 she has always dreamed of having a boutique, so in August of 2012, her dream came true. The name Blonde Pistol came from her blonde hair of course, and her love for country music and The Pistol Annies. Not only does she have one of the most unique inventories in the state, her boutique is located just 15 minutes from the Mall at Barnes Crossing in Tupelo, Miss. Everything in Miss Stone’s shop is hand -picked by Hayley herself. And nothing in her store is over $50 in price, and timeless in design. Carrying brands like Ya Los Angeles, Blu Pepper, Flying Tomato, and Umgee, however Hayley strives to find different items that not only she loves, but her Pistols (customers) will love as well. Blonde Pistol also carries the jewelry line “Made in Mississippi” by Tess Campbell. And to quote Hayley, “We also offer Mystic spray tans because no outfit is complete 26 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
without a tan (that does no harm to the skin).” Not only does your appearance affect those you interact with on a daily basis, your attitude will improve almost magically if you are attired in a current and carefully considered manner. The old saying stands true, “When you look better, you feel better.” Although you may not have to be dressed in a beautiful dress, with shoes, accessories, and a clutch to match… why not? When you can afford it and you feel ten times better about yourself, who wouldn’t? There’s more to buying an outfit than walking into a store and picking up the first thing you see, in the color that your closet is already filled with, and buying it. In fact, that is the opposite of what you want to do. Consider this when buying a new outfit: What’s the occasion? Is this outfit for work, a party, or are you looking for something dazzling enough to be dressed down during the day, and dressed up at night? Always consider that! Shoes and accessories can make one dress look like something totally different when worn differently. Remember this as rule number one, and you should notice your wardrobe start to grow… quickly! However, one or two timeless classics like the little black dress, is and always will be a necessity! Color is critical. Critically boring if you’re one of those who always wears black because you think it’s slimming (which it
is), or if you’re one of those who always buys lime green because it’s your favorite color. It may be your fave, but your skin tone may not favor it as much as you do so be careful. Don’t be afraid to expand, but a good “fashionista” will always keep her classics. Cost is always a consideration, so make sure you stay in your budget. This is precisely why Hayley has everything in her inventory very reasonably priced, and that’s not to mention sales, specials and clearance items. Buy things for next year when they go on clearance this year. You’ll have five or six new outfits for summer, before you are even swimsuit ready! This is always a good idea, and keeps you from over stressing over having nothing to wear when the seasons change, and extra money to spend on new things every season since you got a jumpstart on shopping last year. TRY IT ON!! This may be one of the most important things to remember!! Try it on and make sure you get a perfect fit. Don’t make do, that’s why the salespeople are there to help you! You can however buy a shirt for summer in the fall, or possibly even a pair of shorts that are just a little small (not too much) every girl needs a little motivation! Once you’ve found the perfect outfit, or outfits, now it’s time to accessorize. This is a very important step, as this is that part that can turn one outfit into many. A shrug over a strapless dress at work, paired with modest flats and some pearls is classy and gorgeous. Then when it quitting time, lose the shrug, replace the flats with some stilettos and bring out the sparkling jewelry and you have a whole new look for the evening. All you had to do was change shoes and earrings. Not bad huh? Here at The Blonde Pistol Boutique, we can help you make the right statement without saying a word, over and over again. Dressing up or dressing down is your business. Dressing you from head to toe is ours. Come see us at The Blonde Pistol boutique and let us bring out the best in you! We know it’s you,we just have to find it. Then, it’s all fun from there! “Bang bang!” Editor’s Note: Sales Consultant, Brandi Dyson, is the featured writer for this “How To” article.

There are so many different vacuum cleaners on the market that it can be confusing to choose the right one. The first step is to determine whether an upright or canister is right for your lifestyle & home environment. We’ll identify the different types of vacuum cleaners & examine how you decide which is right for you. This decision is based on the amount of carpeting & other flooring in the home, whether or not you have stairs, as well as any specialized cleaning situations. Once you have identified the type of vacuum cleaner, there are still a number of other considerations that will narrow your choices further & ultimately lead to the vacuum cleaner that will perform optimally for you.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VACUUM CLEANERS
While there are all sorts of specialty or secondary vacuum cleaners, such as hand vacuums, car vacuums, wet/dry vacuums, etc., this is focusing on the primary cleaner for your home. There are 2 major types of vacuums: uprights & canisters. There are significant differences between these types. The most obvious is that you push an upright & pull a canister. Uprights generally have a revolving brush roll to provide agitation & may have one motor that provides the suction and also turns the agitator. It could have 2 motors, one to provide suction & one to drive the brush. There are a wide variety of upright designs for many different cleaning situations. 28 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
Upright vacuums excel at cleaning synthetic (nylon, olefin or polyester) carpeting & may also have the ability to turn off the revolving brush for cleaning smooth floors.
brush. Vacuums with dense, stiff bristles as well as a beater bar function are excellent to bring dry soils up from the carpet pile where they can be brushed from the surface of the carpet & vacuumed away. This type of vacuum is also best for removing dog or cat hair. If your home has low traffic & no special soiling conditions, you can choose a less aggressive vacuum & maintain your home perfectly well.
VACUUM CLEANER PERFORMANCE
Whether you are looking for an upright or canister, look for amp ratings between 10 & 12 amps or wattage ratings between 1200 & 1440.
FILTRATION
Recent innovations like on-board attachments & integrated extension hoses have made uprights much more versatile & able to offer many of the features of canisters. Uprights have traditionally been the favorite type of vacuums in the U.S. & Great Britain. In Europe & the rest of the world, canisters are the vacuum cleaners of choice. A canister vacuum cleaner has a base unit that contains the motor, dust bag & filter system.
TRAFFIC & CARPET SOILS
The amount of traffic & the type of carpet soils also influence your choice of vacuum. Most carpet soils come in on the shoes of people & pets that enter the home. If you have a house full of kids & pets, you will have more carpet soils. If you have synthetic fiber carpet &/or rugs and a heavier soil load, choose a vacuum with aggressive bristles on the revolving
An important, but often overlooked, element of cleaning ability is the capability of the vacuum cleaner to retain the soils, especially the fine particles it picks up. If the vacuum does not offer high levels of filtration, these fine particles can simply go right through the vacuum & can be returned to the room air, where they settle as dust. If anyone in your home suffers from allergies, asthma or any other health condition that is impacted by fine particles or allergens in the indoor air, a high filtration or HEPA filtration vacuum is highly recommended. Do you consider a vacuum cleaner to be an investment? An appliance that you buy once & use for a very long time? If so, a more expensive model would probably be your best choice. But if you consider a vacuum to be a commodity that you use until it breaks & then replace, an inexpensive model will do just fine. You’ll just have to replace it every once in a while. The last thing to consider when purchasing a vacuum, is the brand. You know how some people swear by Fords while others wouldn’t drive anything but a Chevy? It’s the same way with vacuums!!

NEEDS
Assessment questionnaires available online and at many retirement communities can help determine this. • Needs for medical care: If the senior has a chronic illness that necessitates special medical care, or ongoing medical services, independent or even assisted living may not be suitable. • Costs: Learn about the financial aspects of senior housing to determine what options are affordable for you.
INDEPENDENT LIVING APARTMENTS
AND COTTAGES Residents live in apartments or cottages they furnish themselves. While they enjoy privacy and independence, a variety of services are available including dining, housekeeping, social activities and an emergency response system.
• Needs for personal care: How much and what kinds of care are needed or desired?
and goals. To best determine the level of care, a checklist of the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) should be conducted. Some key issues to consider are: • Temporary versus long term care: An older person may go to a nursing home for rehab following a surgery or stroke, then return home. In other circumstances, a senior’s needs are better served by planning a move that is likely to remain the same for many. • Independence: Does the senior want to live alone, and more importantly, is he/she able to do so? Would living in a more service-oriented environment be more nurturing and safer? • Privacy: Privacy decreases as the need for assistance increases. If the senior's desire for privacy is paramount, independent or assisted living would be preferable to a nursing home.
• Walk through and evaluate several care facilities or senior communities that seem suitable. Preparing facility comparison checklists can help you determine which type of environment fits your requirements and preferences. • Seek guidance from professionals who are experts in senior issues. Medical social workers, case managers or geriatric care managers can provide guidance, as well as a facility’s admissions coordinator. They can help with all phases of the process: identifying goals and values, assessing needs, determining what is affordable, and suggesting appropriate facilities. And remember: moving is always traumatic, but moving to a retirement community can be especially so. Find a support system and rely on the wisdom and strength of others.

You don’t always get your preferred hairdresser right on the first try – it takes making hair appointments at different salons and working with different stylists to see exactly which one is deemed your hairdresser of choice. Same goes with your pooch – you can’t just hand him over to any ol’ name in the phone book! It’s important to consider these five tips when selecting a pet groomer that’s pooch-approved!
STEP 1: CONSIDER THEIR EXPERIENCE.
How many years have they been in business? If they’ve set up shop for at least four years, they’ve likely earned themselves a great reputation and are pet grooming experts. The real deal will also be recognized by the National Dog Groomers Association and any other related dog grooming associations, so be sure to check up on them. In addition, the staff should know to be calm and confident, as a stress32 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
ful environment can create a negative experience for your pet.
STEP 2: ASK FOR REFERRALS.
A reputable pet groomer will have a list of referrals and testimonials at their fingertips. Be sure to also ask around town to see if anyone has utilized their services, and check around online for any reviews of their services. It’s your pooch, so make sure he or she is in good hands!
STEP 3: REVIEW THE FACILITIES.
The pet groomer doesn’t need to have the most advanced or posh of pet grooming facilities, but they should be clean and tidy. All cages should be properly sized to comfortably hold your pet, and the pets inside these cages should be resting or behaving in a positive manner.
STEP 4: BRING YOUR DOG.
You need to be comfortable with the pet
groomer you choose for your pooch, but you also need to ensure your dog is happy and content with your choice, as well. Bring your dog along to the pet grooming facility, and see how the staff members interact with your dog, as well as how your dog acts at the facility. Sure, Fido may be a little apprehensive, but if you see the hair rising on his neck, it’s time to check out the next facility.
STEP 5: LOCATION AND PRICE MATTER.
You want to provide your dog with as quality a pet groomer as possible, but let’s face it, you also want to make sure the pet groomer is located in your general radius, and won’t break your budget, either. It’s okay if you can’t choose a fancy pet spa, but do take the above steps into consideration, as you want to be sure you’re getting a pet groomer that will provide quality service for Fido

Personal memorialization is as unique as each family member. Today there are families who want traditional services as well as those who are looking for a small difference in memorializing their loved one through displays of hobbies, photo albums, family videos, writings or paintings. The funeral home and staff are limited only by their space, facilities and willingness to assist you in fulfilling your personal requests. Many families today are choosing advance funeral planning for several reasons, one of which is peace of mind. When an unexpected death occurs, we find ourselves confused, not knowing where to turn. Our minds have a difficult time focusing on typical day-today activities. When meeting with the funeral director to talk about the services for the deceased, your family may have difficulty remembering many important dates and places. This is normal behavior when you suffer the loss of a loved one. Advance funeral planning offers you peace of mind, knowing that your wishes are recorded and the important questions are answered. The funeral director will help you complete a personal funeral profile, which records your vital information and funeral service instructions. With more and more families choosing to plan their funerals in advance, here are several frequently asked questions: • Is my price guaranteed? Not all funeral homes are the same when funerals are prepaid. A Guaranteed funeral plan allows you to lock in today’s prices for the funeral home’s services and merchandise. Regardless of when death occurs in the future, there is no additional cost to your family for the same services and merchandise. A Non-Guaranteed funeral plan allows you to set aside funds earning interest, which are then applied toward the current day’s prices at the time of death. If the
interest did not keep up with the current prices, the family is responsible for the difference. In these cases, the Guaranteed funeral plan is greater benefit to you and your family because it locks in today’s prices. Be sure to ask your local familyowned funeral home which plan is offered.
approve of the cremation before it can take place. Your family-owned funeral home can provide you with the necessary information. Also, discussing the option for viewing or visitation with family members now can save hardship in the future. Some family members may want to set aside a specific time for greeting friends and relatives before the ceremony on the night before. It is important that your family be aware of these question and look at making decisions now instead of later.
SELECTING CASKETS AND
• Can I transfer my prearrangement if I move? Most advance funeral plans are transferable. If an insurance company holds the funds, you can change the name to a different funeral home at any time. Most family-owned funeral homes are linked through a governing organization, which allows them to work directly with other family-owned funeral homes across the nation.
HELPFUL IDEAS WHEN DISCUSSING
CREMATION WITH YOUR FAMILY It is important to make sure that all of your family is aware of your wishes in advance, especially when considering cremation. Cremation is a final decision and irreversible. Your local laws may require you to sign a cremation authorization before cremation can take place. If an authorization is not done until after death, each family member must
VAULTS The selection of merchandise related to a funeral service will normally consist of two necessary items - a casket and an outer burial container. The casket is a container designed to hold and display a loved one during the funeral and burial process. Caskets are constructed of several different materials, with the two categories being metal and wood. Metal caskets are made from basic steel, stainless steel, copper and bronze materials. The family can choose both the type of metal and the thickness. Example: The lightest steel is 20-gauge. It is the least costly, while a 16-gauge steel is heavier and more costly. An average selection is 18-gauge steel, which offers the widest variety of color and style choices at a mid-range price. Wood types have a unique look. No two are alike because of the wood-grain pattern. Wood is priced similar to metal. Different types of wood and exterior decor and hardware will cause the price to vary. Outer burial containers, or vaults, may or may not be required by an individual cemetery. The vault, usually constructed of concrete, is designed to contain the casket while supporting the earth above. The family can choose from vaults that are moisture protective or non-protective. Some cemeteries require this container so the grounds can be consistently maintained, with minimum settling over time. Your local familyowned funeral home professional can explain the available options in your area.

Living in an apartment complex can have several benefits over other alternatives, such as renting a home, a section of someone else's home, or an apartment in a multi-family home. However, if you don't choose a complex wisely, you could forgo any benefits and end up trapped in an undesirable situation. Things to consider when deciding to rent: • Low up-front costs • Good neighborhood • Flexibility to relocate • Affordable monthly rent • Good management and maintenance • Amenities (swimming pool, laundry hook-ups or utilities) • Square footage • Appearance, interior and exterior • Proximity to work, public transporta tion, shopping, highways, etc Make a list of apartment complexes that you're interested in. Record the name of the complex, the full address, and the phone number. Leave room for notes. You can do this on paper or in a spreadsheet program. There are many ways to find apartment complexes you might like to live in: • Drive around the area you're interested in. • Pick up a local rental guide. • Visit websites which advertise apart ment complexes and listings. Call each apartment complex with a set of questions. These questions should cross out several of the complexes on your list. In the notes section of your paper or spreadsheet, write the date that you called. If the apartment is not what you're looking for, jot down why (e.g. "no pets" or "no apartments available"). Give the person the information they need: When you want to move, what you're looking for (how many bedrooms?), and your price range. If you have a pet, include
this information early on. If they have anything available that meets your needs, ask if you can make an appointment to visit and see the apartments they have available. Sometimes, the unit that meets your needs will not be available for showing until close to your move-in date. If this is inconvenient, ask if they can show you an apartment like it, and request a floor plan of the unit in question. You can also ask to see the outside of the unit, which will give you an idea of the kind of view you'll have and what your neighbors might be like. Try to schedule appointments that are in the same area at around the same time. If you're not careful when planning this, you might end up going back and forth from one end of town to the other between appointments. Observe the exterior of the complex. Is the landscaping neat? Are the lawns and hedges trimmed? Do the neighbors take good care of their apartments? People who don't are more likely to be inconsiderate. Some red flags: • clutter on the balconies or front door • blankets on the windows instead of curtains • loud barking Visit at night if you can. If the community is gated, you can still see how well-lit and crowded the parking lot is, and whether people are throwing parties or being loud. Create a realistic budget. Decide what you can afford in rent, including monthly utilities. Don’t look at any apartments out of your price range. 8 Easy steps: Shop and compare. 1. This apartment will be your home, perhaps for years, so ensure peace of mind by comparing prices, options and locations before taking the plunge. 2. Deal with a reputable company. Dealing with a larger apartment management company has its advantages as well as drawbacks. One can find convenient solutions through larger companies, but one should also be careful about companies' claims regarding tenant needs, red tape, reliability, etc. 3. Make a wish list. Do you want a balcony, a pool on-site? Do you want to live near bike paths? Figure it out and create
your wish list. 4. Use the Internet. The Internet is one of the best resources for zeroing in on your dream apartment. It can give you a clear idea of what’s available before you actually go out looking for it. 5. Use your Smartphone. With the latest advancement in mobile devices and specifically Smartphones, you can use your phone's GPS to display apartments that are nearest to your location while walking around a neighborhood that you like. 6. Find your ideal neighborhood. Drive or walk around different parts of the city where you might like to live. Consider commute times, your lifestyle needs and local conveniences. 7. Do a thorough inspection and take notes. Keep a record of each apartment you visit. Note what features are extra or missing. Turn on light switches, look inside closets, walk the grounds and ask neighbors what it’s like to live there. 8. Ask lots of questions. Is smoking allowed? Are pets allowed? When is the apartment available? Will they paint before you move in? Ask if there are any specials or promotions. Inquire about deposits and fees. Ask for an application. Affordable Luxury Apartment Homes
The best way to avoid auto repair ripoffs is to be prepared. Knowing how your vehicle works and how to identify common car problems is a good beginning. It's also important to know how to choose a good mechanic, the kinds of questions to ask, and your consumer rights. This kind of information may help you keep a lid on mechanical mistakes.
HOW TO CHOOSE A REPAIR SHOP
What should I look for when choosing a repair shop? Ask for recommendations from friends, family, and other people you trust. Look for a repair shop before you need one to avoid being rushed into a last-minute decision. Shop around by phone and online for the best deal, and compare warranty policies on repairs. Cheapest isn’t always the best.
APPEARANCE
Look for shops that take pride in what they do. If they don’t take care of their shop and keep a clean appearance, that may be an indication of how they treat your car. Ask to see current licenses if state or local law requires repair shops to be licensed or registered. Also, your state Attorney General's office or local consumer protection agency may know whether there's a record of complaints about a particular repair shop.
HOW TO CHOOSE A TECHNICIAN
Is one technician better than another? Look for shops that display various certifications — like an Automotive Service Excellence seal. Certification indicates that some or all of the technicians meet basic standards of knowledge and competence in specific technical areas. Make sure the certifications are current, but remember that certification alone is no guarantee of good or honest work. Ask if the technician or shop has experience working on the same make or model vehicle as yours. Repair Charges: Unlocking the Mystery Before you arrange to have any work performed, ask how the shop prices its work. Some shops charge a flat rate for labor on auto repairs. This published rate is based on an independent or manufacturer's estimate of the time required to complete 40 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
repairs. Others charge on the basis of the actual time the technician worked on the repair. If you need expensive or complicated repairs, or if you have questions about recommended work, consider getting a second opinion. Find out if there will be a diagnostic charge if you decide to have the work performed elsewhere. Many repair shops charge for diagnostic time. They do so due to the high cost of diagnostic equipment and software. Shops that do only diagnostic work and do not sell parts or repairs may be able to give you an objective opinion about which repairs are necessary. If you decide to get the work done, ask for a written estimate, which should identify the condition to be repaired, the parts needed, and the anticipated labor charge. Make sure you get a signed copy. It should state that the shop will contact you for approval before they do any work exceeding a specified amount of time or money. State law may require this. What should I know about the parts to be repaired or replaced? Parts are classified as: New — These parts generally are made to original manufacturer's specifications, either by the vehicle manufacturer or an independent company. Your state may require repair shops to tell you if non-original equipment will be used in the repair. Prices and quality of these parts vary. Remanufactured, rebuilt and reconditioned — These terms generally mean the same thing: parts have been restored to a sound working condition. Salvage — These are used parts taken from another vehicle without alteration. Salvage parts may be the only source for certain items, though their reliability is seldom guaranteed.
WHAT DO I NEED AFTER THE WORK IS DONE?
Get a completed repair order describing the work done.
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
What are the consequences of postponing maintenance? Many parts on your vehicle are interrelated. Ignoring maintenance can lead to
trouble: specific parts — or an entire system — can fail. Neglecting even simple routine maintenance, like changing the oil or checking the coolant, can lead to poor fuel economy, unreliability, or costly breakdowns. It also may invalidate your warranty. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule in your owner's manual for your type of driving. Some repair shops create their own maintenance schedules, which call for more frequent servicing than the manufacturer's recommendations. Compare shop maintenance schedules with those recommended in your owner's manual. Ask the repair shop to explain — and make sure you understand — why it recommends service beyond the recommended schedule.
PROTECTING YOUR AUTO REPAIR INVESTMENT
What warranties and service contracts apply to vehicle repairs? Warranties There is no "standard warranty" on repairs. Make sure you understand what is covered under your warranty and get it in writing. Warranties may be subject to limitations, including time, mileage, deductibles, businesses authorized to perform warranty work or special procedures required to obtain reimbursement. Check with your state Attorney General or local consumer protection agency for information about your warranty rights. Service Contracts Many automobile dealers and others sell optional contracts — service contracts — issued by vehicle manufacturers or independent companies. Not all service contracts are the same; prices vary and usually are negotiable. To help decide whether to purchase a service contract, consider: Its cost. The repairs to be covered. Whether coverage overlaps coverage provided by any other warranty.
NATIONWIDE WARRANTY
Are you protected when you are most vulnerable like traveling out of town? Make sure your shop can give you that peace of mind.

Nowadays, job seeking is not the same that it used to be, but the basic process hasn't changed: Apply for the job, preparation, interviewing and landing the job. Here are some tips on modern day job seeking for those who find themselves in search of a fresh start with a new company, or to advance themselves with their current employer: • Don't Apply for any job, anywhere at anytime. Posting a generic (aka "one size fits all") résumé to hundreds of online job sites or sending it blind to dozens of recruiters will cost you time with very little return. In most cases, your résumé will simply become one of hundreds that have been submitted, and with nothing to differentiate it, it will be lost in the pile. Applying for jobs is not a numbers game. You do not have a daily quota to meet. Sending 20 résumés a day simply because it is a number you feel comfortable with is not productive. Job searching is about quality… not quantity. So regroup and read all of the job descriptions fully. Only apply if 1) you have the qualifications needed to perform the job and 2) you are willing/able to take the time to customize your résumé for that specific job • Create a positive online presence. Treat all of your social media networks as extensions of your resume, and allow them to compliment you. Look through your • Facebook account and pay close attention to your privacy settings • LinkedIn account and make sure that your profile is 100% complete • Twitter account and start tweeting relevant information for your industry and career. The Facebook statistics are boggling: 1 out of 3 employers rejected candidates based on something they found out about them online 86% of employers say candidates should make their profiles more “employerfriendly” 50% of companies use Facebook to find talent 18.4 million people stated that

Facebook “got them their current job” Today, job seekers need to treat Facebook as an extension of their resume. The two are not autonomous units anymore; they depend on one another to help give perspective to the other. Managers use resumes to compile and note skills and accomplishments, but 24% of managers also use social media profiles to help make “fit and personality” matches. Eye tracking studies have shown that, on average, people spend just 5.7 seconds looking at your profile, and that they look at your profile picture and your job title the most. These are the areas to focus on as you make your Facebook profile as extension of your resume.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR A JOB INTERVIEW
Preparation separates the serious candidates from other applicants. While you won’t be expected to anticipate the hiring managers’ every question, your preliminary research will enable you to see how your strengths and experience can benefit your prospective employer, and that’s what they really want to know. There is no shortage of people who need work – set yourself apart by demonstrating that you actively want to work for the particular company you’re interviewing with and what you can contribute to their initiatives. This is the information you will need: Organizational basics: spend some time on the company website to learn their story from their perspective. Learn the major milestones of their history. How did they come to be the company they are today? What is their mission statement? Can you contribute to their ongoing vision? Are the stated company values aligned with your own? Public perception: Now it’s time to see what others are saying about your prospective employer. Have they been in the news? Are they a topic of conversation on social sites? Spend some time searching online using the most common variations of their company name. Industry news: How is the industry faring in the current economy? Have recent events hit hard or launched the organization higher than ever? Who are the major players? Industry websites and busi-
ness publications will help provide this context. Competitive intelligence: How does the organization rate against its rivals? Are they leading the pack in sales and innovation? Going head to head with a challenger? Leadership: Can you identify the members of the leadership team? Check LinkedIn.com to see who is associated with the company and what role they play. Culture: Is the company progressive? Traditional? Innovative? What can you expect in terms of work/life balance? Are they involved with a charitable organization? Will your personality and work style fit or challenge the culture?
DRESS FOR INTERVIEWING SUCCESS
Regardless of the job you are seeking – office job, executive position, warehouse supervisor, assembly line worker or temporary assignment through a staffing firm – you are going to have to sit down and meet the hiring manager. As you are putting together your interview outfit, here are some statistics to keep in mind: 33% of hiring managers/bosses claimed that they knew within the first 90 seconds of an interview whether they would hire you. Only 7% of this initial impression comes from what you say; 55% comes from the way you dress, act and walk through the door. 65% of bosses said that clothes could be the deciding factor between two similar candidates. So put some thought into what you are planning to wear. To Suit or Not to Suit…That is the Question. You can never go wrong with a suit. Suits have come a long way from the days of Dynasty. They are not frumpy with gargantuan shoulder pads anymore. They are sleek and streamlined and can be broken apart; the jacket and skirt/pants can be worn separately – after you get the job! With a suit, you are dressing in a way that shows you are promotable – that you intend to grow, learn and achieve with this potential employer.

When you dream about the adult your child will become, do you think of an unselfish, self-regulated, caring person who is a problem solver and has the self-confidence to be successful by his or her own efforts? If so, Montessori preschool may the right choice! Authentic Montessori preschools have carefully prepared classrooms under the guidance of teachers who have been trained to follow the approach first developed over 100 years ago by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician. Dr. Montessori closely studied how preschool children learn and was one of the first educators to recognize the importance of the first years of life in the development of personality and intellect. Today, modern science is validating at a braincell level and in largescale studies the approach of the Montessori education philosophy. The brain develops very rapidly from birth to age six. Inside a young child’s brain, connections are being made which may or may not remain depending on how—and how often—they experience and practice the connections. While the first six years go by very quickly, this is a critical time as a child learns the norms for interacting with people, gets a true sense of what healthy interactions look like and how to handle emotions. A Montessori preschool environment is consistent and peaceful. Children’s thoughts, actions and emotions are respected. The safe, peaceful, and respectful environment allows the child’s intellectual development to flourish. Montessori curriculum is based on the understanding that young children are nat-
urally curious, eager and inquisitive learners who learn best when actively using all
of their senses. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own, individual pace by choosing their own activities from hundreds of possibilities. They engage in individual or group activities with materials that have been introduced to them by the teacher who, through keen observation, knows what each child is ready to do. This exciting process of discovery leads to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning. A hallmark of Montessori education is its hands-on approach to learning. Students work with specially designed materials, manipulating and investigating until they master the objective of the lesson. Beautifully crafted and begging to be touched, Montessori’s distinctive learning materials are easily accessible to the chil-
dren because they are displayed at the child’s level on open shelves. In a Montessori classroom one can find lessons that teach life skills such as shoe tying and dish washing as well as lessons in language arts, math, science, and culture. In the classroom environment, children learn how to live in community, to learn independently, and to think constructively and creatively. These are the lessons of the Montessori classroom that remain with its students as they make their way in the world. The most important years of your child’s social, emotional and intellectual growth are the first six years of life. If you think it is important for your child to • Be inquisitive about new things • Enjoy learning Respect their own abilities • Be able to focus Respect others • Work independently • Feel purposeful and valuable then an authentic Montessori preschool for your child is the right choice.

Hardwood floors have always added character and warmth to a room and they have never been more popular than today as a decorating trend. Wood flooring is enjoying renewed popularity because it promotes a healthier living environment and can be used with virtually any design scheme. If you’re torn between replacing carpeting or installing wood flooring, consider that carpeting lasts between seven and 10 years with normal residential use, while hardwood floors can last a lifetime. And if your family suffers from allergies, hardwood floors can dramatically reduce the bacteria, allergens, and dirt that get trapped deep in wall-to-wall carpeting. With proper care, hardwood flooring becomes more beautiful with time and may even enhance the resale value of your home. The majority of wood floors installed today have urethane finishes, which means they can even be used in bathrooms and kitchens. Most manufactured floors are warranted for many years – some for what amounts to a lifetime. When shopping for wood flooring, begin with material that meets your aesthetic needs – this may narrow down some other later decisions. Find the color and grade, 46 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
which range from rustic (visible grain and knots) to clear (very tight grain with no knots). If you are trying to match or complement some existing wood such as adjacent floors or cabinets, there is probably a color that will work. When it comes to adding value to a home, wood floors may add more value than others. Any Realtor can tell you that a roomful of nice new carpet will go a long way toward selling a house. In reality, however, carpet is defined as a furnishing, something that comes and goes, and is not part of the real property. The value it adds is psychological, rather than tangible. Wood flooring increases the value of a home. “Wood” is a big word, and comes in hundreds of species and many colors, and with several grades, finishes and methods of installation there are several factors to consider before selecting the product for your home. Shop with a reputable dealer who has a knowledgeable staff to help you with your selection. Always insist on a certified installer, and remember your wood is only as good as the method in which it is installed. Here at Staggs, we are committed to quality products and installation as well as customer satisfaction and service.
--What type finish do you desire? What color appeals to you—light, medium tones, dark? --New technology and innovative products have made hardwood floors easier to care for than ever. With proper care, hardwood flooring becomes more beautiful with time and may enhance the resale value of your home. --When shopping, you will need measurements of the rooms to figure an estimated cost. Staggs can suggest woods that will work best for your room situation and budget.
THE LATEST TRENDS IN HARDWOOD FLOORING WOOD FLOORING IN KITCHENS
It’s not your mother’s kitchen floor anymore. The latest trend for kitchens is hardwood flooring. Hardwood flooring is easier on your joints because wood is a softer material than tile. It also allows for better acoustics than tile does and is warmer on feet.
WIDER WIDTH PLANKS
Starting at 5” and going up to 7-8” and wider, wider width planks offer more authentic beauty than the traditionally thinner 23”planks.
HAND SCRAPING / DISTRESSING DETAILS
Both of these trends have become more popular in recent years. The soft wavy texture of hand scraped wood flooring can be elegant and perfectly at home in both traditional and formal décor. Distressed beautifully worn floors have a special charm that provides a unique rustic look to any room.
MORE OPTIONS FOR METHOD OF INSTALLATION
Hardwood flooring can be installed over most existing surfaces. Let the expert installers at Staggs consult with you on the best fit for your home.

Way-Fil Jewelry of Tupelo, Miss. is a jewelry store that has served Northeast Mississippi since 1948.
48 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
When looking for a jeweler, there are many questions to ask. The one chief question is “Do I feel comfortable with this person and am I being treated with respect and honesty?” A good jeweler is one who has the customer’s best interests at heart and not just to make the sale. A good jeweler wants to become your friend and earn your trust to build a long lasting relationship. In fact, so many of our clients here at Way-Fil Jewelry have been with us for well over thirty years and we now work with their grandchildren. We know their birthdays, anniversaries, sad moments and “what she would like for Christmas”, because they are part of the Way-Fil family and not just “customers”. Looking for a jewelry store with longevity and a good reputation are also things to ponder when choosing a jeweler. We are celebrating our 65th year at Way-Fil this year. Our owner has been here since 1979 and two of the staff will mark their 20th year anniversaries at Way-Fil this year! A good jeweler should want to share their knowledge of diamonds and gemstones. (After all, we love what we do!) That knowledge will help a buyer make a more educated decision. Buying a diamond can be confusing enough with all those letters and numbers that are bantered about like the temperature. What those letters and numbers mean, affects the value of the item you might purchase and a good jeweler will be happy to explain the differences. Often two diamonds can have the same color, clarity and
carat weight, but be very different in price. Why? Usually it is how well or how poorly the diamond is cut and a good jeweler should be able to show you the difference as well as explain how crucial cut is to the value. A well cut gemstone will sparkle and shine where the same cut, color and clarity stone not cut well will be pretty, but have no “life” or brilliance to it. Service is today’s buzzword and your needs should be very important not just to the jeweler you work with, but with their staff as well. Education of the sales staff is a key to a successful jewelry store, not just in the selling of a gemstone, but in the service after the sale by the staff. And at Way-Fil Jewelry, The Diamond Divas not only want to make sure you have the service you deserve, but that you have fun and a good experience every time you come to the showroom or order online. We greet you with a smile and are genuinely happy that you chose Way-Fil Jewelry to care for your memories. We always remember that we don’t just sell jewelry, we are selling you the memory of a wedding day, a milestone birthday, a special anniversary and of course, those times when it’s a “just because” gift. We will clean and inspect your treasures anytime at no charge. A good jeweler will let you know if your jewelry needs repair and if the time has come, advice on remounting your gems. Another big plus, is that we have an “in-store” repair department. Isn’t it good to know that the bench jeweler that mounted a $20,000 diamond this morning is the same person that will be sizing your child’s synthetic birthstone ring with their expertise! At Way-Fil Jewelry, we have a Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America, a Certified Gemologist Appraiser from the American Gem Society, and a Certified Bench Jeweler from Jewelers of America on staff to help you with your purchasing, appraising and repair decisions. Our expertise and experience can guide you on identifying gemstones being considered for purchase, getting a professional appraisal for insurance (or other legal matters) and how best to repair an item without harming the stones or metals. If you are thinking of redesigning your item, we can use our “CounterSketch” program to show you how it will look …right before your eyes.
A WORD TO THE WISE: BEWARE OF FALSE ADVERTISING Some jewelry stores totally depend on advertising huge savings and discounts when all they have done is create a fictitious price and then “marked” it down. It is a deceptive practice and truly casts a shadow on the jewelry industry. Way-Fil Jewelry is a member of The American Gem Society. AGS members do not participate in deceptive advertising. It is never a good idea to always shop “the price”, because in the jewelry world, you get exactly what you paid for, bargain or no. True value is based on the quality of the stones and the workmanship of the mounting, not the “bargain” price. Let’s talk about internet shopping. WayFil Jewelry opened their first internet store on EBAY in 1999 because we could see that shopping online was the way of the future and we wanted to be there for our clients that enjoyed the privacy of shopping online and the luxury of shopping anytime! In 2007 we launched our website www.thediamonddivas.com with items that we didn’t always keep in stock, but made up as ordered, sort of a “virtual catalog”. The terrific part of ordering online for either of our internet sites is that we have a “brick and mortar” showroom to fall back on. If you have a return or a question with most internet jewelry sites, you have no way of knowing the true value, returns are difficult, and there is rarely a customer service department to talk with you about your concern. Last, but most important to us is that when you keep your business and support in your community you are supporting all the local charitable causes that Way-Fil Jewelry contributes to. A good jeweler will not only give you the best value for your dollar, but will be a part of your community that cares enough to give back. Choose a jeweler like you choose your friends, carefully and with thought. In the long run, your jeweler will be a valuable friend who can be there at all those important times in your life when you want to give that VERY special gift to that VERY special person.

Sharon Long, Director Tupelo Academy of Dance Arts, the Official School of the Tupelo Ballet. tupeloballet.com
NOT ALL DANCE SCHOOLS AND STUDIOS ARE THE SAME. THERE IS MORE TO CONSIDER BESIDES LOCATION AND PRICES WHEN CHOOSING A SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD. What kind of classes should I take? Look for structured classes. Classical ballet is the most effective method of training a dancer. Broadway auditions start with a ballet class. Other styles of dance like jazz, tap, musical theater, and contemporary are based on ballet. Learn your A-B-C’s before you go further into other forms of dance. Avoid combination classes where you only change shoes. Older students should have more than one hour of class per week and students (who study pointe for example) should take two to three or more classes per week. Pointe work should only be done after several years of serious training and after the student is at least 11 years old.
WHO SHOULD BE TEACHING MY CHILD?
Anyone can hang up a shingle and teach dance. There are no governmental regulations or licensing. Therefore, it is very
50 | SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2013
important that you investigate the qualifications of teachers, the history of the school or company, and their professional experience and history in your community. Make sure you know who will be teaching your child and their qualifications and experience. Bad habits learned at a young age are very hard to break.
performances and competitions in all disciplines should be separate. You can’t stop training and expect to compete or perform with success. While performance is an essential part of growth, a serious school will not let it replace a basic emphasis upon building a strong, technical foundation.
WHAT SHOULD THE FACILITY BE LIKE?
Smaller classes mean that your child will get the highly, individual attention that student need. Classes with more than fifteen make it very hard for teachers to give students the attention that is required.
Dance studios should have plenty of space for moving: high ceilings for jumping, mirrors to see yourself, and specially built floors with an appropriate surface covering. Dancers should not be dancing on concrete floors. Low ceilings and small spaces limit movement. To foster the discipline and organization that is essential for an art form, a studio should have adequate basic facilities. A set list of uniform, regulations in regard to leotard and tights, proper hair styles and correct shoes suggests that the school is well regulated and has a positive learning environment.
WHAT ABOUT COMPETITIONS AND PERFORMANCES? Many studios today participate in competitions, conventions, and performances. These can be fun but should not be used for technique classes. Extra rehearsals for
CLASS SIZES…
REASONABLE TUITION AND COSTS?
Tuition and costs should be made clearly available to you before you enroll. Compare costs and the professionalism of the facilities in your area. While it may be tempting to follow the cheapest program available, remember the end result may be far from the positive, if not harmful. Costumes prices should be reasonable and age appropriate.
ASK TO OBSERVE?
