OACHED BY PERRY LILES, CALHOUN CITY FINISHED WITH A 15-1 RECORD AND WON THE 2A CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1989. THE ONLY LOSS OF THE SEASON WAS TO 4A HOUSTON. THE WILDCATS GAVE UP A TOTAL OF 34 POINTS IN THEIR 5 PLAYOFF GAMES.

FOOTBALL: TOP TEAMS SMITHVILLE

1A

2A

Coached by Chad Collums, Smithville finished 11-3 and had a 7-0 record in 1-1A play and made it to the North finals in the playoffs. The offense averaged 32 points per game.

LAFAYETTE

4A

Coached by Michael Fair, Lafayette won the 4A championship and finished the game on a 13 game winning streak after losing its first two games. Lafayette gave up more than 20 points in only two games this season.

CALHOUN CITY

WEST POINT

Coached by Perry Liles, Calhoun City finished with a 15-1 record and won the 2A championship for the first time since 1989. The only loss of the season was to 4A Houston. The Wildcats gave up a total of 34 points in their 5 playoff games.

5A

Coached Chris Chambless, West Point finished with a 14-1 record and won the 5A state championship. West Point averaged 35 points per game while only allowing 11.5 points per game.

NORTH PONTOTOC

3A

Coached by Brian Sutton, North Pontotoc made it to the third round of the playoffs with a 10-4 record and had a 5-0 record in Division 2-3 play. North Pontotoc averaged 36 points and 214 rushing yards per game.

6A

Coached by Trent Hammond, Tupelo finished with a 12-1 record and was the first Tupelo team in history to begin the season 12-0. The Golden Wave were ranked No. 1 in the state this season as well and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs.

ACOB CARTER HELPED LEAD PONTOTOC TO ITS FIRST 13-WIN SEASON SINCE 1992 . CARTER DIDN'T BECOME A QUARTERBACK UNTIL HE WAS A SOPHOMORE AND QUICKLY MASTERED THE POSITION. PONTOTOC RAN A HURRY-UP, SPREAD OFFENSE WHICH CARTER LED BEAUTIFULLY THIS SEASON.

Smithville's Moore rushed for 1,793 yards, 9.6 yards per carry, had 9 games over 100 yards, 28 TDs on an 11-3 Smithville team.

HUNT Walnut's Hunt rushed for 1,153 yards and 12 TDs and had 673 receiving yards and 10 TDs on a 9-4 team which made it to the second round of the playoffs. Played defensive back, returned kicks.

MURPHY West Point's Murphy rushed for 1,756 yards and 25 TDs including 141 yards and 3 TDs in the state championship win against Laurel. Helped lead the state champion West Point team to a 14-1 record.

JETT JOHNSON

ZAY CULLENS North Pontotoc's Cullens totaled 1,968 all-purpose yards, including 1,754 yards rushing, 24 TDs. Recorded 94 tackles, 1 INT from the safety position for a 10-4 team that went to the third round of the playoffs. He is a University of Memphis commitment.

Pontotoc's Carter completed 61 percent of passes for 2,947 yards and 33 TDs while only throwing 5 INTS on a 13-2 team. Was the Journal's Offensive Player of the Year and led his team to a 13-2 record and the North Finals.

6A

Tupelo's Johnson led one of the best defenses in Northeast Mississippi in tackles with 145. He had 102 solo, 3.5 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, 4 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles and 7 tackles for loss. He was also named the Daily Journal's defensive player of the year.

The Lady Lions, coached by Bryan Loague, defeated Bogue Chitto in a best-of-three series to win the Class 1A state championship and finish with a 28-9 record.

The Lady Urchins, coached by Josh Blythe, finished the season 25-6 and reached the Class 2A state semifinals. The seniors – Callie Frazier, Rebecca Sheffield, Callie Roberts, Sallie Pannell and Kensie Roberts – never lost a division game in their careers.

The Lady Panthers, coached by Chris Pace, finished with a 23-9 record and lost in the second-round of the 4A state playoffs.

The Lady Troopers, coached by Perry Wilburn, finished the season 20-10 and swept rival Nettleton in the state semifinals. They lost in the state championship series to Choctaw Central.

EDGEWORTH The Amory Lady Panthers junior outfielder .644 with 68 RBIs, 23 home runs, 13 doubles, 5 triples and a .678 on-base percentage.

SMITHEY The Ingomar junior outfielder batted .718 with 51 RBIs, 15 home runs and posted a .963 fielding percentage.

SWIMMING: TOP TEAMS (GIRLS) ITAWAMBA AHS

CLASS I

The Lady Indians, coached by Chris Johnson, finished fourth overall at the MHSAA Class I State Swim Meet in Tupelo. They had the highest finish of any Northeast Mississippi team in the class.

CLASS II

The Lady Golden Wave, coached by Lucas Smith, finished second overall at the MHSAA Class II State Swim Meet in Tupelo.

n Thursday, Jan. 12, Journal Inc. and Tommy Morgan Realtors honored Northeast Mississippi’s top high school teams and athletes at the 2016 Fall Sports Awards Banquet. Teams and student athletes from some 22 schools throughout the region were recognized. The event featured guest speaker Dan Mullen, head football coach at Mississippi State University, and Will Kollmeyer, director of athletics at Blue Mountain College, serving as emcee.

CLASS I

The Indians, coached by Chris Johnson, finished seventh overall at the MHSAA Class I State Swim Meet in Tupelo. They had the highest finish of any Northeast Mississippi team in the class.

CLASS II

The Golden Wave, coached by Lucas Smith, won their tenth consecutive state championship at the MHSAA Class II State Swim Meet in Tupelo.

CLASS I

The Itawamba AHS swimmer won state in the 100-yard Butterfly in 1:03.94. She finished third in 100yard Backstroke in 1:05.09.

CLASS II

The Tupelo High School junior won state in the 500-yard Freestyle in 5:14.47; finished second in the 200yard Freestyle in 1:58.89.

CLASS II

The Tupelo High School swimmer won state in the 200-yard Freestyle in 1:43.68. He finished second in 100yard Freestyle in 47.65.
