Editor’s Letter

Life can move too fast sometimes. It seems like just yesterday I was making a list of what I wanted to accomplish this year and, while I’m not terribly off track, I feel like time has gotten away from me. One thing on my resolution list was to invest in more meaningful, face-to-face communication. I found myself having whole conversations over Snapchat or by sending memes and gifs to communicate my feelings. And while I love a good gif, I don’t want it to replace communication where the other person can hear my voice and see my facial expressions. On page 53, Tony and Missy Caldwell hit on a similar topic of being mindful in the moment, especially during the holidays, when your thoughts are trying to pull you in a million different directions. This issue is full of beautiful homes decorated for the holidays (pages 40 and 57) and must-try recipes for any gathering (page 17) and gifts for every person on your list (page 83). All of those things have a place in this season, but I hope you join me in remembering why we gather for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those reasons might be different for each of us, but hopefully they are more meaningful than how much money we spend on a gift. The Mud & Magnolias staff wants to wish you the happiest holiday season and we’ll see you in 2018!

If you have any thoughts about this issue, please email me at editor@mudandmag.com.

Cover: More pie, please! The staff tried our hand at traditional pies with a twist, like Chai spice and bourbon. To top it off, we created a video to show readers how to make fancy crusts. Check out the recipes on page 37 and the video at mudandmag.com. Photo by Lauren Wood.

1 Ingredient, 3 Ways PHILLY CHEESESTEAK STEW Ingredients: 1 1/2 pounds thinly sliced beef sirloin Salt and pepper 1/4 teaspoon onion powder 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour, divided Olive oil 2 onions, thinly sliced 10 ounces white mushroom, sliced 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 2 cloves garlic, finely minced 4 cups beef stock, hot 4 sourdough bread bowls, centers scooped out 4 slices provolone cheese Directions: Add the thinly sliced beef sirloin to a large bowl and season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the onion powder and 2 tablespoons of flour, and toss to coat. Heat a pot over medium heat. Drizzle in 3 tablespoons of oil. Once hot, add half of the sirloin and sear it on each side for two minutes. Remove to a plate and repeat with the remaining sirloin. Once all sirloin is seared and set aside, add more oil to the pot and add in sliced onions with more salt and pepper. Cook the onions until caramelized, around five minutes, stirring frequently. Add in the mushrooms and sautĂŠ with the onions for five to six minutes. Add in the dried thyme and garlic. Once the garlic becomes aromatic, sprinkle in the remaining flour over the mixture. Stir well to coat. Add the hot beef stock one cup at a time, stirring to keep a smooth consistency. Reduce the heat to low and allow stew to simmer for 10 minutes uncovered. Turn off the heat, add the sirloin back in and stir. Add more salt and pepper to taste. Ladle stew into bread bowls, top with a slice of provolone and place bowls on a foil-lined baking sheet. Broil on high for one to two minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve with leftover sourdough on the side for dipping. PANCETTA AND PORTOBELLO PIZZA Ingredients: Butter Olive oil 16 ounces pancetta, chopped 1 package of portobello mushrooms, sliced 1/2 cup smoked gouda cheese, grated 1 cup mozzarella cheese, grated 1 pizza dough Minced garlic Directions: Sprinkle a pizza stone with corn meal and preheat in the oven at 450 degrees. Heat skillet over medium heat and cook pancetta until browned. Drain

off grease and remove pancetta and set aside. Add a small amount of butter to the skillet and sautĂŠ mushrooms. Brush olive oil over homemade or store-bought pizza dough. Spread minced garlic over the top. Add cheeses then top with pancetta and mushrooms. Place pizza on stone and cook until dough is browned on the edges. CREAMY GARLIC MUSHROOMS Ingredients: 2 tablespoons butter, unsalted 2 garlic cloves, minced 8 ounces baby portobello, cremini or white mushrooms, whole 2 tablespoons of cream cheese, room temperature 2 tablespoons of parmesan, freshly grated salt and black pepper 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped, divided Directions: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and mushrooms, and cook for five to six minutes or until caramelized, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and add cream cheese, parmesan cheese, fresh parsley and salt and pepper to taste. Bring back to medium heat and stir until it comes to a boil. Turn down the heat and simmer until slightly reduced and thickened, about four to five minutes. Remove from heat. Top with reserved parsley. Serve.

(festive snacks continued) Directions: Line a 9x13 glass dish with parchment paper or foil. Put semi-sweet chocolate chips in a small glass bowl and microwave for one minute. Stir gently until smooth and set aside. Pour vanilla chips in a medium sized glass bowl. Microwave for one minute 30 seconds. Stir gently until smooth. Add peanut butter to vanilla mixture and stir until well-combined. Pour vanilla-peanut butter mixture onto the prepared pan. Mixture does not have to reach edges of dish. Once it’s settled, take the melted semi-sweet chocolate and pour it onto the vanilla-peanut butter mixture in lines. Take a knife and run it through the fudge in the opposite direction of the chocolate lines you created to achieve a swirl pattern. Let cool either on the countertop or in the fridge. Cut into small squares. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container. SANTA’S WHISKERS Ingredients: 8 ounces red candied cherries, rinsed, dried and coarsely chopped 16 tablespoons (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 cups sugar 2 tablespoons low-fat milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 1/2 cups flour 4 ounces chopped pecans 4 ounces sweetened flaked coconut Directions: Beat the butter and sugar together in the bowl of a stand mixer or hand-held electric mixer on high speed until light and fluffy, approximately three to four minutes. Add the milk and vanilla extract, and beat to combine. Use a flexible spatula to fold cherries into the butter-sugar mixture, then to fold in the flour and pecans. Divide the dough in half. Roll each half into a log about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Spread the coconut onto a piece of wax paper and roll each log in the coconut to coat. Wrap the logs in plastic wrap and chill for 2 hours. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. When ready to bake, position racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven. Have 2 baking sheets at hand. Cut the logs crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, rotating the logs as you cut to help them retain their round shape. Transfer the slices to the baking sheets, spacing them one inch apart. Bake for 10 to 14 minutes or until the edges are a light golden brown. Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat to bake all of the cookies. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container. APPLE BUTTER OLD FASHIONED Ingredients: 1/4 cup apple cider Juice from 1/2 a lemon Dash of orange bitters

1 tablespoon apple butter 2 ounces bourbon Ginger beer for topping (optional) Thinly sliced apples and cinnamon, for garnish Directions: In a cocktail shaker, combine the apple cider, lemon juice, orange bitters, apple butter and bourbon. Shake to combine. Strain into your prepared glass filled with ice. If desired top with ginger beer. Garnish with cinnamon and apples. Serve immediately. LONDON FOG Ingredients: 1 Earl Grey tea bag 1/2 cup hot water 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or other milk of choice) 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1-2 teaspoons raw honey, maple syrup or sweetener of choice Directions: Steep your tea bag in the hot water for 3-5 minutes. Mix together almond milk and vanilla extract and steam or froth depending on what tools you have. Stir sweetener in with steeped tea and top with frothed milk. Enjoy hot!

Pie Recipes CHOCOLATE BOURBON PECAN PIE Ingredients: 1 unbaked pie shell 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup light corn syrup 1/2 cup butter (1 stick) 4 large eggs, beaten 1/4 cup bourbon 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips (approximately 1 cup) 1 cup chopped pecans Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line a deep dish pie plate with the pie crust, set aside. Combine sugar, corn syrup and butter in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until butter melts and sugar completely dissolves. Remove from heat and cool slightly. In a large bowl, combine egg, bourbon, vanilla and salt. Mix thoroughly. Pour cooled sugar mixture into egg mixture slowly, whisking constantly so that the heat from the sugar mixture doesn’t cook the egg mixture. Add the chocolate chips and pecans and mix well. Pour mixture into pie shell. Add desired decorative top crust. Bake in preheated oven (continued on page 39)

Add the nutmeg, cinnamon, ground ginger and salt, and stir to combine. Fold in the blueberries. Sprinkle the flour evenly over the top of the mixture and stir to coat. Allow to cool to room temperature. Place pie crust in dish. When the filling is cool, spread the pound cake crumbles around in the bottom of the shell. Pour the filling over top. Place desired decorative top crust on pie. Place in the fridge to chill and preheat the oven to 400 degrees. When the oven is heated, remove the pie from the fridge and brush with the egg mixed with water. Sprinkle generously with sugar. While you wait, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut your sweet potatoes in half and let them cool for a few minutes. Scoop out the insides and place in food processor with all other non-crust ingredients. Process until smooth. Pour batter into pie crust and smooth out with rubber scraper. Add desire decorative top crust. Bake for approximately 40 minutes or until set. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. Refrigerate for at least three hours before cutting. M mudandmag.com

F

or as long as Madison Pearson can remember, Christmas has been a special time of the year for her family. When her mother, Tracy Chambers, opened Tool Mart Inc. in Golden, the importance of the holiday season took on new meaning. Her home, which she shares with her mother, stepfather Daryl and sister Maycee, has become known locally for its all-out Christmas décor. “From decorating, to being with family, and most importantly, celebrating the birth of our Savior, Christmas brings so much joy and blessings to us that it’s hard not to be at the top of the list as our favorite holiday,” said Pearson. Tool Mart Inc., or TMI, is a wholesale tools distributor, home store and holiday emporium. They supply Christmas decorations — wreaths, trees, plates, ornaments and more — for homes all over the region, and they make certain their own home is not without holiday cheer. “Mom selling Christmas decorations has definitely made decorating at our house different over the years,” Pearson said. “When I was younger, I remember having the basics and everything more simple. Now, it’s on a whole new level! We’ve

perfected things a lot more, and if you’re not covered in glitter, then you didn’t do something right.” Just a couple miles from the store, Chambers’ home sits on a hill. Santa sits on his sleigh out front, poised to take off, and nutcracker statues flank the doors. These outdoor decorations are favorites of Pearson and her family. On the doors hangs an enormous wreath — a true marvel of greenery and ribbon. Just inside, guests are greeted by two drummer boys, welcoming you to the holiday home. Each room has its own theme and collection of pieces. In the office, you will find Christmas books on the desk and side tables. One of the many Nativity scenes, featuring the wise men, is on display near the door. Just across the hall, the dining room is filled with festive color — bright hues of red, green, yellow and blue — with an elaborate tablescape and matching place settings. “All of the decorations at our house come from TMI. Some are collections from over the years and some things are new,” Pearson said. “TMI has a little of everything.” At the end of the hall sits the main tree. There are many trees of different sizes in the Chambers’ home, but this is the

one under which presents are placed. The tree itself can barely be seen under ribbons, sprays and ornaments meticulously placed. The top of the tree reaches nearly to the second floor of the home. In the living room, a more classic collection of Christmas décor lines the tables and mantle in hues of deep red and gold. In the eat-in kitchen, you will find Christmas pottery, holiday cookbooks and even more trees. Decorating the home is a family endeavor. Once Thanksgiving is over, the tree comes out. Pearson said getting everything just right takes at least two days, and that’s if they work non-stop. And while their home might be decorated for only a couple months, Christmas never really ends for their family. “As soon as Christmas is over, it’s time to start ordering the next year’s decorations,” said Pearson. “July is usually when they start putting the decorations back out and getting ready

for their Christmas shows.” With a business that revolves around the holiday season, it seems it would be easy to lack in Christmas cheer, but for their family, there is no shortage of reasons to celebrate. “Our favorite thing about Christmas is the time we get to spend with family and the opportunity to help those in need,” Pearson said. “Christmas is such a special time, and you want everyone to feel the joy that God has put in your heart and spread that joy to everyone else!” This year will undoubtedly hold another busy season for the Chambers family. They will put in long hours, selling presents and decorations, but come Christmas, you will find them at home, surrounded by their beautiful decorations and one another. When the celebrations are over, they will put away the drummer boys and garlands and start planning for the 2018 holiday season. M

Mindfulness

A Gift For All Seasons

M

By Tony and Missy Caldwell

ost of us are much more familiar with mind fullness, or fullness of mind, than with mindfulness. Today we experience four times the environmental stressors that our grandparents faced. Our attention is often divided among televisions, computers, smartphones, advertising and 24-hour news channels. We are psychologically and emotionally battered and fried by all of these factors on a daily basis. Our brains suffer from overconsumption of this mental junk food, high in calories but low in nutrition. But, there is so much more to our lives when there is so much less in our lives. This “something more” is awareness, presence: integration. When we’re not all here, we’re not “all there.” Mindfulness is about being all here — being here now. Less really is more. The less overloaded we are, the more we are our true selves. So when our mental cup runneth over we must pause. Our brains are not unlike computers. By the time we become adults we have downloaded so much information. We have been programmed and updated so many times. The theme of mindfulness is return. To return to essence, to the breath, to the moment, to oneself, to a reality not completely defined by external circumstance, to return to the fundamentals, to who and what really matters — to return home. Mindfulness, in some ways, is the opposite of mindlessness. Mindlessness is the lack of forethought, thought and

afterthought. And, after all, it’s the thought that counts. Right? The holidays can bring so much joy, but if we are in a “holidaze,” we will miss it. The holidays can also bring pain for many of us, like the family members who are gone, the ones we don’t connect with, the financial strain, the lack of time, the expectations, the guilt, the grief and the hurried pace. If we weren’t so busy, we might really suffer. But mindfulness asks us to be with all of that, too — to give it space, to honor it, to take good care of it; but, to also not over-identify with it. We are not the stuff that we purchase. And, we are not the stuff that we think. We are the observer of the thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. This Thanksgiving, if you find yourself “stuffing” your feelings, consider what it is you are truly hungry for. If you have to get lit like a Christmas tree in order to make a joyful noise, maybe consider that, this year, you don’t. Observe yourself attaching to what you want or how you want things to be. And begin rewriting your Christmas story. It is so easy to get our loved ones the gifts that they want and watch them open it and not even be fully present in the room, make eye contact and really connect. But what our loved ones most need is not our presents, but our presence. The best gift we can give one another is ourselves, but the giving of our undivided attention requires that we become our undivided selves. This year, when you sing “I’ll be home for Christmas,” make sure that is a true statement. M mudandmag.com

Simple, Sweet Holidays By Carmen Cristo

It’s always sweet to me when people say they saw something and it made them think of me. I like that people know that about me. I feel like Christmas is part of who I am.”

J

essica Webb grew up in parsonages owned by churches, like the one she and her family live in now. She distinctly remembers her mother taking those plain houses, full of finishes she did not choose, and making them the perfect backdrop for family memories. Making a house a home is a talent Webb inherited. Webb shares her Baldwyn home with her husband, Jason, and their two children, Eva Kate and Easton. They moved there five and a half years ago when Jason became the pastor at Ingram Baptist Church. The home is a cozy three bedroom and two bath. “The house was beautiful when we moved in, but the church has been very gracious to let us change a few things,” Webb said. “I really enjoy living in a small house, because I don’t like

unused space.” Webb’s design scheme allows a dedicated place for everything. Her self-described style is polished casual, with neutral tones and white accents. “My aim is to always have a home that is pleasing to the eye, but still comfortable and livable,” said Webb. “My kids can sack out on the couch, my husband can sit in his big man chair and I can sip coffee and be able to enjoy the view.” Webb has become known among her friends and family not only for her hospitable home, but for her absolute obsession with Christmas and holiday décor. “It’s always sweet to me when people say they saw something and it made them think of me,” she said. “I like that people know that about me. I feel like Christmas is part of who I am.” Because of her reputation, Webb has accumulated quite

the stash of holiday memorabilia in the form of gifts and finds. Webb says she began collecting when she left for college. She recalls returning home for the Christmas holiday and decorating her own room with lights and garland. She admits her love of Christmas is yet another of her inherited traits and one she shares with her two sisters. “My love for Christmas is from my folks. Each year, on December 23, we all get together and watch Christmas movies my mother recorded on VHS tapes. We play Christmas games, which I’m in charge of, and eat lots of food. It’s one of my favorite days of the whole year,” Webb said. Webb’s favorite Christmas decorations have sentimental value. She especially loves a set of wooden toy ornaments that hung on her parents’ tree when she was a child. When she got married, her mother gifted them to her to start her own ornament collection. Webb is also very fond of her snowman collection, supplied mostly in gifts from her husband. And then there’s Jingle and Jangle, two little elves given to her children by her grandmother. “There were toy elves that sat on her tree for as long as I can remember. She decided to give an elf to each greatgrandchild,” she said. Other favorites include a mid-century vintage set of Santa and Mrs. Claus salt and pepper shakers and a Department 56 figurine from a church member’s personal collection. “It’s a little boy and girl looking at a melted snowman. It’s called ‘Where did he go?’ She said it reminded her of Photos by Lauren Wood mudandmag.com

Eva Kate and Easton, and it was special to me that she thought to give it to us,” Webb said. In keeping with tradition, Webb is teaching her children a love for the holiday. Each year, they bake Christmas cookies together, “grow” candy canes, enjoy the Christmas parade and ride around to look at the decorations. Eva Kate and Easton even have their very own trees in their rooms — Eva’s in shades of pink and Easton’s with toy robot ornaments. “When I was growing up, it wasn’t about spending money. It was about the time our parents spent with us. They made us feel special and close-knit,” Webb said. She hopes to create the same magical experiences for her children that her parents created for her. M mudandmag.com

Gourmet Popcorn Flavored popcorn has been a holiday staple for many years and with gourmet popcorn shops popping up around the region, there is likely a flavor for every person on your list. By Dennis Seid

F

or 45 years, the Caramelcorn Shop in Tupelo has enticed legions of customers with the delectable aroma of melting butter, brown sugar and vanilla, mingled with the smell of freshly popped popcorn. Mouths watering, customers often buy a box – maybe two – or a tin full of Caramelcorn’s tasty treat. Right now, The Caramelcorn Shop and other gourmet popcorn shops are entering their busiest time of the year. The peak period for popcorn sales for home consumption is in the fall, with the holidays spiking demand. Sales trail off in the spring and summer, but popcorn is a year-round favorite. One of the healthiest snacks – a cup of air-popped popcorn has 31 calories, while a cup of oil-popped popcorn has 55 calories – popcorn has long been one of the nation’s favorite munchies. Americans eat about 13 billion quarts of popcorn every year. On average, each man, woman and child in the U.S. consumes more than 10 gallons of popcorn a year. While buttered popcorn is exotic as it gets at the movie theater, popcorn lovers at home have a cornucopia of sweet and savory – sometimes a combination – flavors from which to choose. The gourmet popcorn shops offer dozens of flavors, from buffalo chicken wing to birthday cake, red velvet cake to cheesecake and even cajun seafood boil and lemon pepper. At The Little Popper in Tupelo, owner Courtney Shaw has

created many of her own flavors. Some have been hits, some have been misses. In business for nearly three years, the store has had to pare back the number of offerings to meet the demand of only its top-selling products. Essentially a three-person operation, they can only do so much. “We’ve narrowed it down to the flavors we know people are getting the most,” Shaw said. “We now have right at 50, but we have had as many as 80 or 90. Not always at the same time, but that’s what was available.” No worries, though – she’s always looking for new flavor combinations. For example, perfect this fall are two newly introduced popcorn flavors: caramel apple and harvest spice – a blend of cinnamon, apple and pumpkin spice. “For Christmas, we’re introducing hot chocolate, which is chocolate-flavored popcorn with mini marshmallows and drizzled in chocolate,’ Shaw said. “It’s a chocolate lover’s dream.” The popcorn shops sell their popcorn in a variety of bags, tins and gift baskets, with varying prices depending on the size. Maybe it’s a quart-size bag of popcorn. Or if you’re throwing a party, a two-, three- or even six-gallon tub of popcorn is available as well. And the popcorn these stores use isn’t quite like the stuff you pop at home. Most popcorn comes in two basic shapes when it’s popped:

Snowflake is used in movie theaters and ballparks because it looks and pops bigger. Mushroom is used for candy confections because it doesn’t crumble. And popcorn can be air popped or popped in oil. Rosa DaLomba, owner of Pop Porium in Starkville, air pops 90 percent of her non-GMO popcorn, insisting that it’s easier to coat the popcorn with flavoring. “It’s not the most cost-effective way, but we make everything in small batches, and for us, it’s much healthier this way,” she said. For Christmas, some new flavors being rolled out are gingerbread and peppermint. “I’m also working on an eggnog flavor,” said DaLomba, who opened her store on Main Street in February. “We specialize in gourmet popcorn, but we also have popcorn balls and we’ve added pralines.” DaLomba mixes her own flavors as well, coming up with customer favorites like bacon pecan ranch and loaded baked potato. Starkville is home to another popcorn shop, Tasty Time Gourmet Popcorn. Marjorie Willis opened it this past February after working out of her home. She started with popcorn balls to help raise money for a nonprofit organization, and the popcorn shop provides funding for it. For the holidays, the small shop offers just a few flavors: theater-style popcorn,

cheese popcorn, deluxe cheese popcorn, and some sweet and savory varieties. “Because we’re a small operation, we don’t carry much on the shelf, but we’re able to make it fresh,” she saids The Bahama Mama is sure to be a holiday favorite. It’s a “dessert cluster” of popcorn, made with light caramel, raisins, macadamia nuts, coconut, dried pineapple, dried papaya and a butter-rum flavor with rum-enhanced white chocolate. Back at The Caramelcorn Shop in Tupelo, owners Titus and Barbara Harris have been keeping it simple with three basic flavors – their signature caramelcorn, cheese and plain. It’s a formula that’s worked for nearly half a century. The store is filled with old advertising memorabilia and other collectibles. They’re not for sale – only the popcorn is. And unlike some of the antiques lying around, the popcorn isn’t aged at all. “We make it fresh daily; nothing ever sits around,” said Rusty Harris, one of the Harrises’ sons. “We make it all day, every day.” Prices range form a $3 box to a $46 six and half-gallon tin. And customers can bring in their own tins, as well. “You should see some of them that come in,” Rusty said. “But we just put a liner in it and fill it up with whatever they want.” M

uke 12:27 reads:“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.” This verse inspired Anna Chaney to pursue her passion amid a busy schedule. Chaney wears many hats — wife to Nathan, mother to Hugh Taylor and Henry, furniture designer, interior design professor, small business owner and artist. Her interpretation of the namesake verse: “Be content. Be happy in your own skin. Use what you’ve been given and don’t worry.” Chaney’s early watercolor ventures happened while in college. She studied interior design at Mississippi State University, but took many art classes as electives. When she went to work as a furniture designer for FlexSteel, she picked painting back up, hoping to create custom fabrics for her

pieces. It became what she calls her “creative outlet.” Her husband, seeing the fulfillment it brought her, encouraged her to go all-in. “My husband and I are firm believers that if God gives you a talent, you should use it,” Chaney said. “You never know who you can reach.” While her day job has her designing furniture to be made in mass quantity for some of the country’s biggest hotel chains, her nights are filled with painting one-of-a-kind pieces that will hang above couches where families gather, cribs where babies rest and above mantels to be admired. The contrast is not lost on Chaney. What seems like a side hustle is more like therapy to her. Her work hangs in her own quaint Starkville home. She paints nearby at her dining room table, after the work day is over and her children are fast asleep. While the world mudandmag.com

outside her windows is dark, she imagines plants and trees in vibrant hues — monstera, ferns, magnolias and eucalyptus. Each stroke of the brush is a sort of act of worship as she brings to life leaves, fronds and flowers on paper and canvas. “There’s just something about recreating what God made,” Chaney said. She also does custom work for businesses, like AnnieB & TLC, who print Chaney’s watercolor designs on children’s shirts. Additionally, she paints custom sorority prints for MSU students. She recently hand-painted a watercolor wings mural inside Starkville’s LA Green live during an event. Individuals can order custom works, too, like custom stationary, wedding invitations and home illustrations. Sets and original paintings can be found in a few local stores — LA Green in Starkville, Farmhouse in Tupelo and The Local Artisan in Eupora. Chaney never imagined her watercolors, her “first love” as she calls it, would inspire so many, but she is not one to question fate. In the future, you can find her work on pillows and wallpaper and, hopefully, that fabric she initially dreamed about. Her newly launched website (createdbywildflower.com) is the source for all of it. M 78

Do You Have Trouble Getting Medical or Dental Care for Your Child? Or Do You Have A Problem Paying For Their Medicines? If you answered Yes to either question, CATCH Kids may be able to help you! CATCH Kids operates Free Clinics for children ages birth to 18 years old.

All medical care is provided by local doctors and/or nurse practitioners. All prescribed medicines can be filled free to your child! Children that do not have dental insurance or Medicaid can receive free dental care (No braces or routine cleaning). Children with toothaches, multiple cavities, abscesses, or other gum problems may be eligible for free restorative dental care provided by partnering local dentists. The clinics are not meant to replace your family medical provider, but to ‘catch’ those children that may not be able to obtain needed care otherwise, or sick children that do not need emergency room services.

Haley West Mudpots In Haley West’s Como home, a handmade mug sits by the kitchen window. The face of Lucy, West’s Boston Terrier, is hand-painted on the front. It faces the window, as if Lucy is watching for squirrels in the yard. It was the first mug West ever made, the first of what is now hundreds. By Carmen Cristo mudandmag.com

est’s pottery shed is no-frills, with a dirt floor and shadeless lamp for light. She sits at the wheel quietly, making shapes of a large cube of clay or “mud.” Just moments later, the raw material becomes a bowl, fully formed. West moves her hands effortlessly over the sides, smoothing as she imagines the final product. She removes the bowl from the wheel and leaves it to dry for a moment before picking it up. The pieces finish drying inside, where weather won’t affect the craftsmanship. Her dogs, Lucy and Cooper, sit on a vintage couch at the

entrance of the shed, overseeing the whole process. “It’s so peaceful out here,” West said. She goes on to tell us about leaving her day job last year at the Baddour Center, a home for adults with special needs. While she loved her work there, West had a longing to return to her artistic roots. She set up shop at her parents’ farm before moving to her home in Como with her very own “potting” shed. Pottery was not always the plan. West originally studied fine art at Mississippi State University, with the ultimate goal of being a photographer. She found herself right on the cusp of

digital photography age with little experience outside of the film lab. In school, West studied pottery as an elective, and it had remained in the back of her mind. A little over a year ago, after making the Lucy mug, she decided to just go for it. “I just took a leap of faith,” she said. “I am so lucky that this is my job.” West’s pottery has no one true style. She makes bowls, mugs, cups, planters, platters. Some are custom orders for individuals or stores and some just come to her as she works with the clay in her shed. From her chair, she has the perfect view of the train tracks that separate her street from Downtown Como.

“I just listen to music and work,” West said. “By the end of the day, I’m covered head to toe in clay.” West currently sells her work in two stores, the Como Stow just up the road, and George-Mary’s in Starkville. For the Como Stow, she makes whatever feels right — eclectic mugs with bulldogs, cows, owls or roosters; platters for chips and dip; and wavy bowls. For George-Mary’s, the aesthetic is cleaner — white mugs and platters with speckled clay and simple cream and sugar sets. She also sells her pottery on her website. West’s own style is evolving as she finds what suits her personality and sets her work apart from other local potters. One thing each piece has is an inscribed bible verse on the mudandmag.com

bottom, West’s way of “spreading the seed” from her little shed out back. “This entire experience has really taught me a lot about trusting God,” West said. “He has helped me a lot.” In the coming year, West plans to upgrade her shed to a studio with air conditioning, so she can work longer hours in the seemingly year-round Mississippi heat. She hopes to expand her product line and experiment with more styles, getting her mugs and plates in the hands of more Mississippians. For now, she enjoys the cooler temperatures while she works on pottery that will be given as gifts or put on display this holiday season — mugs adorned with hand-painted turkeys, stems of cotton and faces of beloved pets.
