A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM OUR EDITOR

I

n God’s Holy Bible Ecclesiastes 3:1 reads: “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” Back in August 2019 it all seemed clear and planned out for high school seniors at North Pontotoc, South Pontotoc and Pontotoc High Schools. School calendars had been approved. It was all written out in black and white, or even color. Nine week tests were all scheduled and report card days were set. Pontotoc City School had scheduled graduation for May 15 and North and South Pontotoc would hold commencement ceremonies on May 16 (rain or shine). It was a done deal. We thought. The August weather was hot, but football season was only weeks away. And it was time for football practice, band practice, softball practice and cheerleader practice. August, September, and October rolled by. Basketball and soccer seasons sprang into action in November and suddenly it was

December and Christmas break. Half of the senior year had sped by. As Januarys go, the 2020 version was not terribly cold and hope of spring sports sprang eternal. The spring of one’s senior year in high school has always been extra special. Graduation, the first of hopefully many milestone finish lines was in sight. Plans were made for proms, dances, pictures and graduation parties. Coronavirus wasn’t on the school calendar, but it happened just the same. Playoffs, senior night, proms and graduation plans were all replaced by “Shelter in Place and Safer at Home.” Was it a purpose under Heaven? If so, why? Romans 8:38-39 reads: “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” I firmly believe that God still loves us all

and that He has a plan for each and every 2020 high school senior. Not since WWII, the Korean War or Vietnam have high school seniors faced such a world of challenge, unrest and uncertainty. The senior classes of 2020 have seen firsthand just how fragile life’s plans can be. I dare say you appreciate hugs and kisses and family and friends more than most. I saw the smiles and tears and cheers as Pontotoc High seniors were saluted with “drive-in” movies, and North Pontotoc seniors paraded through Ecru and South Pontotoc seniors circled through Algoma that afternoon. Your family and friends were so proud. The senior classes of 2020 all passed with flying colors. I pray that you still have graduation exercises in July. And I bet you have some great reunions. But most importantly, God has a time and season for every purpose for each of you. David Helms Pontotoc Progress Editor

Pontotoc Seniors

find life lessons in COVID-19 Year

igh school seniors in Pontotoc County missed a lot due to COVID-19, but many said having their year cut short, and watching society change, will forever mark their experience as unique, and shape their outlook on life. Social distancing wound-up bringing people closer together, many seniors said. North Pontotoc senior Brianna Galabiz loaded groceries at curbside. “A lot of elderly people were scared to go inside, even younger people, with children, but it meant a lot to help them get what they needed,” said Galabiz. “Good-hearted people live in Pontotoc. They love to talk while we’re loading their cars.” South Pontotoc senior Kendall Houpt said that even while missing once-in-a-lifetime events, she counted her blessings. “People really suffered, but my family was blessed with good health, and good community—not everyone had that,” said Houpt. Pontotoc senior Abby Galloway was preparing to leave on a mission trip, and the Coronavirus hiatus gave her a chance to focus on family before leaving. “This made me a better person,” said Galloway. “We recently had a loss in our family, and I realize we’re not promised tomorrow, and family means so much.”

KEEPING PERSPECTIVE

Pontotoc schools have a strong tradition in sports and extra-curricular activities, and while seniors missed their walk-off ovations on the fields, courts, and at competition, the friendships they formed reached beyond the season, many said.

Galen Holley, Pontotoc Progress “Everything can be taken away in a heartbeat, This year has been tough-I’m not going to lie--but, our teachers, and the whole community have been great. I’ll always remember.”

Brianna Galabiz

North Pontotoc HS

“All the memories of sports events I was part of –and never got to be a part of—will stay with me, Having a limited senior year, missing prom, and having a virtual graduation, will definitively make our class different.”

Will Porter

Pontotoc City HS

“There is no unexpected to God, I had fun at football games, and in student council, and I’m thankful. I turn to God, because He’s the only one who knows what’s ahead.”

“I cried about it, and had to wipe away my tears, because it was God’s plan, not mine,”

Abby Galloway Pontotoc City HS

North Pontotoc senior Bo Haygood played soccer and tennis. “The friends I met treated me like family, and we grew stronger throughout the year,” said Haygood. “They were great people to be around.” Houpt at South Pontotoc was looking forward to a successful season in power-lifting. “As a kid, I thought about that final hurrah, but, very quickly, this virus took over our lives, and it made me thankful for my friends,” said Houpt. “I realized I wouldn’t always have them around.” Abby Galloway missed archery competition at PHS, as well as 4-H activities, but she got experience in life. “I’ve learned to face challenges in a new way,” said Galloway. “God puts things in front of you, and every mistake, every challenge, is a lesson learned, and I’m a better person.” Galabiz at North lifted weights at school and groceries at work. She had a philosophical outlook on the pandemic. “Some days it rains,” said Galabiz, sagely. “I’ve gotten closer to my family and friends.” Pontotoc senior Will Porter participated in cross-country, swimming, bowling, archery, and track-and-field, but said missing personal interactions was the biggest loss. “All the memories of sports events I was part of –and never got to be a part of—will stay with me,” said Porter. “Having a limited senior year, missing prom, and having a virtual graduation, will definitively make our class different.”

FAITHFUL TRUST

Don’t take it for granted. Seize each day.”

If every cloud has a silver lining, Pontotoc seniors found it. Haygood at North learned to appreciate each second. “Don’t take it for granted,” said Haygood. “Seize each day.” Haygood’s classmate, Galabiz, agreed. “Everything can be taken away in a heartbeat,” Galabiz said. “This year has been tough--I’m not going to lie--but, our teachers, and the whole community have been great. I’ll always remember.” Like many seniors, Houpt at SPH saw God’s providence in the spring of 2020. “There is no unexpected to God,” said Houpt. “I had fun at football games, and in student council, and I’m thankful. I turn to God, because He’s the only one who knows what’s ahead.” Galloway said the biblical verse Jeremiah 29:11 gave her inspiration during the break. Through scripture, God reassured her that he had plans and would make her prosper, Galloway said. “I cried about it, and had to wipe away my tears, because it was God’s plan, not mine,” said Galloway. Porter at PHS took to heart Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:25, when he said don’t worry, but pray and trust in God. “I really wasn’t too concerned about it all, because there was nothing I could do about it,” said Porter. “I left school before spring break, thinking I had half a semester left, but that wasn’t God’s plan. I realized that nothing is permanent, and I felt a sense of gratitude--for the school district making us as comfortable as possible, for the senior signs, for the virtual graduation. In my limited senior year, I was given a lot, and I’m thankful.”

County Athletes reflect on senior spring seasons cut short

Jonathan Wise, Pontotoc Progress

he class of 2020 will always have a unique story because they were unable to finish out their final year of high school due to COVID-19. Senior student athletes competing this spring missed out on opportunities for both individual and team accomplishments, as well as many potential memories of exciting competition and camaraderie, when the remainder of the spring sports season fell victim to coronavirus. North Pontotoc senior Gage Chism has had a decorated powerlifting career. Coming into this year, Chism had captured the 3A 114-pound class state championship in back to back years (2018 and 2019). “Well it took me by surprise,” Chism said. “We got out on spring break just for a week like normal. A week turned into two. Two weeks turned into a month, and the next thing you knew the powerlifting season was over with.” Even though the Vikings had moved up to the tougher Class 4A, Chism was in the middle of another stellar season and had a good chance for a third straight state crown. He had already claimed first place in his weight classification in both the division and regional meets. “I really think I could have went back and won state again this year, but I guess we will never know,” Chism said. “It was definitely a disappointment.” In addition to his personal accolades, Chism was a part of North’s 3A state championship team in 2018. That title was historic for North Pontotoc and marked a yearlong quest for the team after coming in second place (state runner-up) by four points a year earlier. “I would have to say that was the most exciting moment,” Chism said. “That was the first year I won state individually and we were able to win as a team. Before that North Pontotoc had never won a state championship in powerlifting, so it was a big accomplishment to be able to be a part of that.” Pontotoc High School’s Katie Munlin missed out on her senior

“I was really disappointed that I didn’t get to have my senior track season, especially since I only got to do it for that one year, I am really thankful that I got the opportunity to win a state championship last year. It was also devastating not to be able to finish with my teammates.”

“Of course it is out of my control and there is nothing you can really do about it, Sports have been a part of my life ever since really I could walk. Everybody dreams about playing your senior year and everybody works up to that moment. I knew I had put in the work to make it the best that it could have possibly been. It hurts that it was cut short. You put in a lot of time and effort and you don’t get to reap the benefits of that.”

track season. Munlin, who has been a cheerleader, soccer player and powerlifter, joined the track and field program last year as a pole vaulter. She went on to take first place at the division, region and North Half meets. At the 2019 state meet Munlin cleared a season-high 10 feet to win the 4A state championship. “I had been asked by coach before if I wanted to try pole vault,” Munlin said. “I was always nervous, but I thought I would give it a shot. The first couple of days I went out there it was kind of rough, but I caught on pretty quickly. I am thankful that I started to do it, because it ended up being really fun or me and I enjoyed it a lot. I am glad I put myself out there to try something new and excel at it.” Unlike some, her senior spring campaign was over before it started. Pontotoc High track only got one meet in before school and extracurricular activities were suspended- the New Albany Invitational- and pole vaulters did not compete. “I was really disappointed that I didn’t get to have my senior track season, especially

since I only got to do it for that one year,” Munlin said. “I am really thankful that I got the opportunity to win a state championship last year. It was also devastating not to be able to finish with my teammates.” South Pontotoc’s Cade Jones was set to have a major role for the Cougars’ baseball team as a senior this spring. He had played and started some in his career, but this year he was an everyday player. “Of course it is out of my control and there is nothing you can really do about it,” Jones said. “Sports have been a part of my life ever since really I could walk. Everybody dreams about playing your senior year and everybody works up to that moment. I knew I had put in the work to make it the best that it could have possibly been. It hurts that it was cut short. You put in a lot of time and effort and you don’t get to reap the benefits of that.” A memorable moment for Jones occurred in a game against county rival and defending state champion North Pontotoc the Saturday before spring break, a day after when school would ultimately be in session for

the final time. The Cougars swung the bats well and entered the 7th and final inning with a 5-run lead, only to see it evaporate and the game go into extra innings. South bounced back, however, and ultimately prevailed 10-9 on a game-ending bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth. Even though the season only lasted 9 regular season games for the Cougars, Jones was off to a fast start and looked to be a centerpiece of South’s ball club. He was hitting .417 with 9 runs scored, 3 doubles, one triple, one home run and 10 RBI. Beyond that, even though South was young and playing in Class 4A, Jones thought the Cougars were developing into a dangerous club. The squad was 5-4 overall when play was halted. “I had all the confidence in the world that I could perform the way the team needed me to,” Jones said. “I think I could have continued to play that way. I feel like if we were able to finish the season we could have done some pretty big things for a young team. We were playing really good baseball.”
