Warriors expect to compete despite young roster Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

It is a different landscape in several ways for the Pontotoc Warrior baseball program. Many of the faces that will take field in the Hollow will be different after PHS lost most of the core of the 2017 team that reached the state 4A quarterfinals. The coaching staff is different too. In May Pontotoc alum Josh Dowdy accepted the job to lead the program he once played for. Pontotoc is one of the state’s most respected programs in Class 4A, with an impressive 43 consecutive winning seasons. However, Dowdy and his coaching staff want to try to get it to among the elite on a consistent basis. “Pontotoc has always had a rich tradition in baseball,” coach Dowdy said. “We want to win division championships of course, but we definitely want to get to the level of winning of

North Half championships, and our ultimate goal is to get down to Pearl and win a state championship. It’s been numerous years since Pontotoc has won a state championship. They’ve been close a few times, and we just kind of want to get over that hump. “We want to instill in the guys that every day we go out and play as hard as we can possibly play. We don’t want to take any days off.” Mixed in with a roster loaded with youth are four seniorsHayes Wilson, Trevor Morgan, Ryne Franklin and Jeremiah Hall. Morgan and Wilson played as sophomores before rejoining the team this year. “They (Morgan and Wilson) are great kids and we liked what saw off the field,” Dowdy said. “Trevor is a competitor. He is going to throw for us for sure and be a utility guy. Hayes is one of those utility guys as well. He has a lot of power (at the plate),

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

and he is a big stick that we’ve been able to add to our lineup. Along with Ryne Franklin and Jeremiah Hall, they bring leadership that these younger guys need. They are good examples. I think it is really going to help the team.” Along with Franklin and Hall, Pontotoc also brings back two other other players with significant varsity experience in sophomore Caleb Hobson and junior Hayden Harris. Dowdy expects Harris, a power-hitting catcher with a strong arm as well, to have a big year. Beyond that, Dowdy expects to put a number of players on the field at different spots, especially early. “Like I tell them, everybody battles for a position every single day,” he said. “They know that whoever is producing at the time is going to play.” The Warriors expect to be able to pitch well, with Morgan, Hall, Seth Ganger, Ross Matthews,

and Franklin having emerged as dependable arms. “In my years coaching this is one of the deepest pitching staffs I’ve had,” Dowdy said. “In years past I might have had a dominant guy, and I think some of these kids could turn into that; but I am just excited we’ve got a number of guys that can go out there and compete and give us a chance to win.” On really the only day the entire team was together last summer, the Warriors turned some heads by upsetting New Hope in the NEMCABB Tournament. “That just shows us as coaches that the future is bright,” Dowdy said. “I think we have a lot of young guys that have talent. People this year are going to see a lot of new faces, but they are going to play their tails off. We really think we have a chance to compete, which is all you can ask for. The kids will tell you- we want to surprise some people this year.”

Gritty Cougars optimistic about 2018 Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

South Pontotoc’s baseball program posted their best season since 2009 last year, winning 19 games and a share of the division title. Many important contributors from that team are gone, but coach Bryan Buckner likes the scrappy nature his new-look squad showed in summer action. The Cougars battled back from big early deficits to win to pick up several confidence-building victories. “This past summer I was really proud of the grit the guys showed in doing what it took to win games,” Buckner said. “I was kind of concerned that we would be putting up one or two runs a game, but they exceeded my expectations.” The roster is loaded with upperclassmen, but many guys will have to take on bigger roles than they have in the past. “We’ve got several guys with experience, players who have varsity playing time under their belts,” said Buckner. “We’ve got 11 combined juniors and seniors, so we are going to be relying on them pretty heavily.” The pitching staff lost two aces, but Buckner expects it to be a strength again behind juniors Carson Newell and Kirby Ross. Newell posted a 2.45 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 45.2 innings of work in 2017. Ross joined the program as transfer, but he was a reliable hurler for Bruce last season, posting a 2.84 ERA and fanning an impressive 86 batters in 56.2 innings for the Trojans. “Carson gave us a lot of quality innings last year, and we are going to be counting on him in division play, him and Kirby both. Kirby was real blessing to

get back, and I think he will give us a great one-two punch. I think any time either one of them are on the mound they are going to give us a chance to be in the game and win it.” “We also have a lot of other guys who can come in and give us innings.” Other pitchers who are in the mix to see action in relief or in weekend games are Chandler Johnson, Will Allen, Dustin Tutor, Barrett Griggs, and McCade Davis, as well several younger players.

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

South returns a very capable hand behind the plate in senior catcher Alan Hall, who only made two errors in 288 chances last season. Hall also hit .382 with 20 RBIs. Newell and Ross will split time at first base depending on the pitching arraignment. Other infielders will include Dustin Tutor, McCade Davis, John Alan Belcher, Johnson, and Allen. Outfielders will include Newell, Will Fleming, Barrett Griggs, Belcher, and Davis. Buckner expects Davis, who

has been unable to play because of unfortunate knee injuries the past two seasons, to make an significant impact. Buckner likes the way his troops have swung the bats, and he thinks the Cougars can put some pressure on opponents offensively. The grit South displayed last summer showed itself again in very early season action in late February. If that continues and the pitching proves as consistent as expected, another very good year could be on the way.

Vikings have depth, strong defense Will Ruff

Sports Writer

The Vikings finished 17-10 (6-2) a year ago and won their division for the second year in a row. North made it to the second round of the playoffs before dropping two out of three to Kossuth. The Vikings lost three seniors, but they bring back a talented core with loads of potential. “I like this team a lot because of our depth,” said head coach Chad Anthony. “I think defensively we are really good. That will help us out, because offense comes and goes with the team and the pitching matchups you have; but playing sound defense is something that always gives you a chance to win.” North will look to three-sport star Clark Mills for leadership and steady offense. The senior hit .362 last year with 25 runs scored and 21 RBI. Seniors JD Hicks and Brandon Thomas will be leaned upon as well as leaders and can contribute in the field on the mound.

“We have a lot of people that can play, and that gives us a lot of flexibility,” said coach Anthony. “This team can be special because of their confidence in each other and team chemistry.” On the mound North also returns a stable of capable pitchers, including Jake Reeder, Cor-

ley Hooper, Brandon Thomas, and Ethan Dyer. Reeder compiled a 2.78 ERA and struck out 51 batters in 40.1 innings a year ago. Ethan Dyer threw 12 innings last season and struck out 12 batters. Hooper, a talented left-hander who didn’t pitch last year due to an injury, will be

looking to make a big impact. Thomas struck out 14 batters while pitching 21 innings while compiling a 1.78 ERA. Mills will also see innings on the mound. The Vikings also return a solid core of hitters as well. Dyer hit .468 with 22 runs scored and 23 RBI, Sheffield Anthony hit .300 with 18 runs scored and 22 RBI, and Braxton Sudduth who hit .329 with 13 runs and 16 RBI. As a team North stole 42 bases. “Our guys can steal and hit with a little pop,” said coach Anthony. “I feel good about the potential of our lineup.” “Overall our goal is to have a winning season and win the division,” said Anthony. “After that we want to be the best team in 3A north and make a run in the playoffs. I have always told my guys that they should not define their season on state championships, but I always have left an open space in the trophy case, and I think that this group of upperclassman want to leave something behind in that spot.”

PHS Softball Invitational

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

Talented Lady Warriors working toward big goals Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

A young Pontotoc Lady Warrior softball team developed into one of the top teams in North Mississippi last season. Pontotoc closed out the regular season winning 14 of their final 16 games, including a 10-0 division run that saw PHS put up an average margin of victory of 13.9 runs. With the vast majority of the squad returning, the Lady Warriors should again be a title contender, both inside the division and hopefully beyond. “We’ve got the core group back that won the division championship,” said interim head coach Michael Wildmon. “The season ended on a sour note for them. The girls are hungry; they are ready for the challenge. We are just excited about the season and what it offers.” Leading the Lady Warriors will be senior pitcher Mary Kate Butler. Butler is a 4-time All-Division performer, a past division pitcher/defensive player of the year and division MVP, and a two-time team MVP. With a total of 44 wins and 355 strikeouts in the circle over the past three seasons, the 2017 Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) All-Star should give PHS a chance to win many games. Butler can also swing the bat as well, with a .400 plus batting average every season since 8th grade. Among position players, there are a number of other important pieces back as well. Makarthy Lane was an All-Division outfielder. Sky Vaughn was also named All-Division at catcher, and she is good both defensively and with the bat. Senior Averi Berry returns as an All-Division third baseman. Emily Walker gives the Lady

Warriors a dependable glove at shortstop. Other key returners include Randa Claire Payne, Abigail Anderson, Allie Beckley, Tayler Russell, Jadyn Spears, Armanni Taylor, and Gabby Golden. “We have a lot of kids we can put out there at different posi-

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

tions,” Wildmon said. “Our seniors- Mary Kate (Butler) and Averi (Berry) have been doing a good job leading us, trying to keep the younger kids focused” Wildmon said. “But really the entire team comes to practice every day ready to work. We don’t have to

harp on them; they give us good practices. We set a goal, and the kids have their eye on it. The ultimate goal(s) that we have are to win the division, get to North Half and win it, and give ourselves the opportunity to bring a state championship back home to Pontotoc.”

Lady Cougars look to build on recent history of success Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

South Pontotoc has enjoyed a historically good stretch of fastpitch softball lately, as the Lady Cougars have compiled 41 total victories the past two seasonsthe most in that span in school history. South’s teams have been consistently solid and the program highly thought of in the North Mississsippi softball scene under coach Adam Patterson’s direction, and the pieces are in place for the Lady Cougars be a team to be reckoned with once again. “We have a lot of good returning players,” said coach

Patterson. “It is going to be a team effort. This group might not have what you call a ‘stand out’ type player, but we have a lot of kids that play extremely hard and play their roles, and that is the most important thing.” South has two seniors returning in Loren Long, a Blue Mountain College signee, and Sara Beth Watkins. “We’ll be looking for them to give us a lot of leadership; they have both played a lot for us,” said Patterson. The Lady Cougars lost some key pitchers, but they do return a capable top starter in the circle in Allyson Harrison, who

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

was a second team All-Division selection a season ago. “Allyson pitched a lot of innings for us,” Patterson said. “She has picked up a little speed and is spinning the ball well, and I think she will have good year. She is a hard worker who puts a lot of time into it. Alexis Hurst is a freshman who is going to have to step up and throw some for us as well, and she has been working hard. “ Patterson plans on using a lot of players, and positions will be somewhat fluid. Other key returners include Maisy Canerdy, Lexie Ward, Layne Tedder, Sara Brown, Emma Carwile, and Allie Gaspard.

Destiny Catledge had a big fall on the slowpitch diamond with 21 home runs, and she is set to play a significant role for the Lady Cougars. Newcomers Rebecca and Mattie Pilcher are also expected to help. Koryn Mathews is a young player who Patterson expects to be a solid hitter. “We have an extremely tough division with Nettleton, Houston, Hatley and Aberdeen, as well a lot of difficult out of conference games,” Patterson said. “This is very hard working team. They give a lot of effort every day. I think they will continue to get better as we go forward.”

Lady Vikings should be a force in 3A once again Will Ruff

Sports Writer

The Lady Vikings finished 17-12 (6-0) in 2017. Last year’s campaign included winning a division title for the third year in a row and the team falling short in the 3A North Half finals for the second time in five years. “We lost two seniors from a really good young team last year,” said head coach Cee Cee Austin. “I still expect a lot from that core group of young players and my two seniors.” Fast forward to 2018 and the Lady Vikings are set to return the bulk of their lineup, led by seniors Katelyn Matthews and Gracey Griggs, as well as back to back division pitcher of the year, sophomore Cadi Beth Gates. “We expect big things from Cadi Beth again this year, and there is no reason she can’t be as good, or better, than she has been for us,” said coach Austin. “She has a lot of experience having started since the 8th grade. “Katelyn is the life of our team. She is eager and energetic and runs the team from her spot in center field. Gracey will play catcher and some third base for us, and while she is not a vocal leader she does a good job leading by example and controlling things from behind the plate exactly like a coach would want.” On the mound the Lady Vikings will be looking to freshmen Tiffany and Tayler Bishop to eat innings behind Gates again this year, but this time they have another year under their belt. “I expect big things out of them with more experience, and we will need them to pitch well for us behind Cadi,” said Coach Austin.

Ava Merritt will hold down the corners, seeing time at third and first base for the Lady Vikings. “She is one of my best hitters, and I expect a lot of runs to be driven in by her,” Austin said. “We also have seven freshman that are a young good group of players who do everything right. We will need some of them to

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

take the next step.” The Lady Vikings have built a reputation as a year-in, year out 3A contender, and they should be again in 2018. “Our goals are pretty much the same year to year,” said coach Austin. “We want to win the division again, and then we will set more goals after that.” North may be young on pa-

per, but they have a number of players with post season experience who have been to the north half championship round before. “We just have to get over that hurdle, and I think we have the experience and a group that wants it,” Austin said. “We just have to step up and find a way to do it.”

Pontotoc track squads poised for successful years Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

Numbers are up and so are the expectations for the 2018 Lady Warrior track and field team. There are nearly 30 girls vying for spots on this year’s squad, including both key returners from last year’s state runner-up team as well as talented newcomers to the program. The Pontotoc girls took home a division title and co-North Half title last season before falling just short of the the state championship. They are led by seniors Rossie Robinson and Taylor Norris, who have dominated the pole vault in Class 4A. They have been one and two in the state the last two years, taking turns winning the individual title. Norris was the state champion in 2016 and Robinson in 2017. A’miracl Johnson and Kashae Knox are also experienced seniors that should earn points in field events. Johnson qualified for the state meet in high jump last year, and Knox barely missed the cut at 4A North Half in the throws. Junior Jorden

Owen is also a key returner. “She was a silver medal winner in the 100 hurdles, and she is one of the fastest runners out of blocks. so she will start the relays,” said head coach Brian Morgan. Jyashia Shumpert, a junior, finished fourth in the state in the 200 meters a season ago and will anchor the relays. Raegan Staser, Maclaine Griffith, Michaela Bradford,Savvanah Middleton all return from the medaling 4x800 and 4x400 teams. Tierra Simmons was another state qualifier last year in discus, and she returns for her sophomore campaign. “There are still some holes to fill, but there is a good group of new faces,” Morgan said. “We think we will be able put the pieces together to make a run at a state championship this time.

It’s always our goal, and we like our chances with this particular group of athletes. We look forward to watching them compete this year.”

The Warriors

The boys will be defending their division title with a good blend of runners and field event athletes. They are led by seniors Jarious Gill, Ben Zinn, Cameron Lavigne, and Isaac Staggs. “Jarious is a 3-time state meet qualifier, and he is one of the most physically gifted athletes I’ve been around,” Morgan said. “His main event is the 200, and he will also anchor the 4x100 and 4x200 (relays).” “Ben is the kind of athlete that can earn his team points in a variety of ways. He will probably run some events as well as compete in field events. Isaac is

coming off an injury, but if he is healthy could really help us in distance races.” Lavigne along with junior Caleb Ruth return from the state qualifying 4x800 team. “Both are hard workers and very dedicated to this program,” Morgan said. Junior Immanuel Vance returns in the triple jump and looks to repeat as a state qualifier. Sophomore Shaun Christenson is a pole vaulter that made North Half last year. “He has been jumping really well in practice,” Morgan said. “He has improved tremendously and could be one of the top vaulters in the state.” “There are several more guys that have experience and a couple new faces that have proven already they will be competitive. Just like the girls, our goal every year is a state championship. We will put in the work, and I know both these groups will compete with relentless effort. We are anxious to get this season started.” On Monday, March 19 the Warriors will host their first regular season meet of the year.

Pontotoc looks to keep success going with young squad Galen Holley Sports Writer

The Pontotoc Warrior tennis team enters the 2018 season lacking experience, but they have an enthusiasm that coach Kevin Morrow hopes will hope leads to improvement throughout the year and an ultimately successful campaign. “They’re excited, biting at the bit, and we’ll have to find out who’s ready to play,” said Morrow. “Our lineup will move around a bit. A big challenge for us will be replacing four (departed) seniors. We only have one returning senior, Sarah Metcalfe, and the rest of us are pretty

young. We’re a work in progress.” In addition to perennial opponents Amory, Itawamba AHS, and Shannon, Pontotoc will face two newcomers to their division this year in Caledonia and Mooreville. The number one goal for the Warriors is always to come out division champions, and the program has been very successful at attaining that goal lately. They have won their division for five consecutive years. According to Morrow, sophomore Jaslyn Hopkins will be a key player for the Lady Warriors. Hopkins is the only returnee who qualified for state last

year. The Lady Warriors do, however, bring back several players with varsity experience, such as Metcalfe, Brianna Ball, Brooke Chism, Caroline McAuley, and Brooke Johnson. “We’re a little deeper on the girls’ side,” said Morrow. According to Morow, Blayze Haynes will help anchor the boys’ side along with sophomore Holland Clowers. Russell Moorman is another key veteran. Other players who will contribute based on early season action are John Metcalfe, Joseph Henry, David Metcalfe and Broc Butler. Pontotoc is young, but a number of the Warriors gained confi-

dence playing for Pontotoc’s 18 and under United States Tennis Assoication Junior Team Tennis squad this past summer. Hopkins, Ball, Moorman, Haynes, Brennan Clark, and Shaun Christenson were a part of a team that won the Northeast Division, fell in the state championship match, and qualified for the USTA’s Southern-Section Championships in Georgia. “My assistant, Ray Smith, and I, are looking forward to good season, and we hope to build on the success we’ve had in the past,” said Morrow. “Our goal is to make the playoffs and for our kids to have fun and enjoy playing.”

Cougars motivated to accomplish big things Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

The South Pontotoc Cougars have some unfinished business this spring on the tennis courts. The program is always a championship competitor in Class 3A. However, the Cougars are still chasing their ultimate goal, which is a team state championship. They have played for the state title before, and that is where they want to be come May. South has fallen a victory short of that position in each of the past two years, falling in the state semifinals (North Half championship match). “We only lost one senior, so we have a strong team coming back,” said head coach Helen Bowen. “I’m hoping this year we can get back to North Half and win it. It will take us continuing to work hard and get better. We have four seniors in varsity events that need to lead this team, and I know they will.” All four seniors-Reese Duncan, Landon Roye, Judith Mills and Haylee Finley- are talented veterans who played key roles in helping the Cougars win a division title for the second year in a row. South returns everyone who made the state tournament a season ago, including Duncan, Mills, Haylee Finley, Addi Smith, Isaac Finley, and Maddy Angle. “As soon as the state tournament was over, they were already talking about this year and getting a game plan together to get better and go farther,” Bowen said. “They have worked extremely hard, and I know it will pay off throughout

this season.” Several players put in extra work to improve by competing

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

for Pontotoc’s very successful United States Tennis Association (USTA) Junior Team Ten-

nis squad this past summer. Most of South’s returners will be competing at different positions this year. Duncan will start at boys singles. Duncan only joined the team last year, and Bowen said he has the potential to be one of the state’s top players, if not ultimately the best. “I’ve never seen a player make as big of a jump as he has,” Bowen said. “He has had an amazing improvement for only a second year player. He is going to have a great year, and I feel like he has a chance to go all the way (to an individual state title).” Another returning starter- junior Leanna Polk, will start this season at girls singles. Isaac Finley, a talented freshman who has made the state tournament in both his 7th and 8th grade years, will team with Roye at number one boys doubles. Seniors Mills and Haylee Finley will look to make some noise at number one girls doubles. Smith and Allysen Lee will start the season at number two girls doubles. “Those two girls are firecrackers,” Bowen said. “I don’t know if I have ever seen a forehand from a girl like Addi has.” Matthew Butts and Richie Lilly, at press time, are slated for boys doubles number two. Ethan Earnest is also in the mix at the spot. At mixed doubles will be the team of Maddy Angle and Sam Morgan, another returning player with varsity experience. “If we focus on playing as a team, we can go a long way,” Bowen said.

Sports Writer

Tennis coach Jeremy Lytal is in his first year as the head man for North Pontotoc in 2018. Coach Lytal was pleased with how some of North’s players finished last season, and he looks for his young team to perform better overall in region play and build on some of their individual successes. “We are young again this

year,” said Lytal. “We had two boys qualify for state individually last year. We are returning both of them and a mixed doubles team that has a good shot as well.” Jeremiah Eldridge and Noah Walker both qualified for the state tournament, and Walker and Kailyn Lott qualified in mixed doubles. “I think Eldridge and Walker both have a good shot at qualifying again this year, and Walk-

er and Lott should get back to state in mixed doubles,” said coach Lytal. “Everyone else I have is pretty much new to the sport on the boys side.” As for the girls, “Lillian Angle has a shot to be pretty good for us this year,” said Lytal. “She is a leader, organizes things for us, and hold her teammates accountable. We have a few freshmen, and everyone else is in middle school.” Coach Lytal spoke candidly

on improving everyone’s bests and building a solid foundation for the program. “I want them to learn how to play tennis the right way, to try and get them to use the sport to get scholarships, and for it to be fun,” said Lytal. “Winning some tournaments and getting more qualified for state and having a shot at division would be nice too, but it’s hard to do that without a solid foundation.”

Young Warriors have potential, passion for golf Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

The Pontotoc golf team is still short on veterans compared to some this season, but the Warriors will put a team on the links that has talent, and, perhaps just as importantly, a passion to play. “We’ve got some kids who you can tell that golf means a lot to,” said coach Andy McGregor. “They have a lot of time invested in it. I am thankful for previous coaches and parents who have been a part of that. We have a relatively young team with a lot of potential, and I have seen some kids get better every day.” Leading the boys will be junior A.J. Martin, already an accomplished golfer with the potential for much more success ahead. “A.J. is a special kid to coach,” McGregor said. “Most importantly, he eats, sleeps, and breathes golf. It means a lot to him. His game does not have a weakness, and he is a guy who is going to have a big role in how our season goes. I look for great things from him, and I think eventually he will have a chance to get college paid for through the game of golf. He works really hard, and it is my job not so coach him up so much as not mess him up.” The Warriors also return junior Mitchell Cook and eighth grader Mac Cook. “Mitchell and A.J. are our upperclassmen who we will look to for our leadership,” McGregor said. “I have seen a marked improvement in Mac (Cook) every day. He is another one who truly loves the game of golf. I was very pleased with his opening match performance as an eighth grader, and he will only

continue to get better as the season goes on.” The rest of Pontotoc’s top five will be comprised of newcomers Jolan Mills and John Mark Mills. Guy Logan Grubbs rounds out the roster. “Jolan (Mills) is very talented. He has a chance to be special if

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

he keeps working and fine-tuning some things,” McGregor said. “Before John Mark (Mills) leaves Pontotoc High School he will be remembered as a very good golfer. I think he would play 24/7 if we could find him some lights to go play under.” “Our group is a tight-knit

bunch,” McGregor said. “I think that is going to help us.” After a season without one, Pontotoc will put a girls team on the links in 2018. The Lady Warriors, coached by Jonathan Beard, are made up of Jordan McDaniel, Addison Mask, and Eliza Hamill.

Cougar golf returns to the links Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

South Pontotoc didn’t field a golf team in 2017, but they did have a group of players practicing all through the season in preparation for being on the course this season. That entire group is intact for the Cougars’ return to competitive golf. “I told them last year that we were going to practice in hopes for the future,” said coach Cage Mills. “Last year we got to play a couple of exhibition matches. We have everybody returning, as well as two new players who are just getting their feet wet. I feel good about it. In our

opening match this year I can see they are definitely building off the experience that they had last year where they got to compete and the work that they have put in.” The Cougars have three seniors for both the boys and girls teams- Larsen Lee, Reese Duncan, and Hayden Cox for the boys, as well as all three of the girls team members in Kassidy Young, Judith Mills, and Belle Mills. “I feel like when we have all of our top golfers here for the boys, which two play other sports so I can’t count on that all the time, we can be a very competitive high school golf

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

team. I think the girls can be too,” Mills said. Other members of the boys squad are Will Fleming, Landon Bishop, Michael Scott Foster, Dawson Tutor, Rylan Roberts, Tanner Davis, and Cooper Bishop. One benefit the Cougars have is that that everybody is coming back, albeit with no official match experience last season. Mills said one of his major themes has been the importance of personal investment outside of school-sanctioned practice in order to improve, as well as deliberate work on specific areas of the game. “One important thing I tell

them is that it takes some work and dedication on your own,” Mills said. “This is a game that you can’t just play during golf season and then wait around until next golf season. You can’t play two and a half months out of the year and expect to be really competitive. We are going to work during practice, but you have to put some time playing by yourself. It is a game that requires a lot of practice to be successful. “We are always working on certain things. Whether it is short game, mid-irons, or something else. We try to work on specific skills during practice.”

North golf teams have high expectations Jonathan Wise Sports Editor

The North Pontotoc golf teams had excellent seasons in 2017, and with the core of both teams back this year, more success is anticipated. “They both had good years last year,” said North first-year (for golf) coach Chris Parman. “The boys won the division championship, and both teams went to the state tournament. We bring back almost everybody, so as far as expectations go they are pretty high.” North’s boys return Jon-Major Earnest and Clay Matthews as their top scorers from a year ago. “Those two shot well last season, and they are dedicated and play a lot on their own too,” Parman said. Presley McMillen also comes back as an important piece from last year’s title team. Rounding out the Vikings’ top five are Jackson Wise and Jaylen Wise. Jackson Wise finished tied for third at North’s first match of the season. “In addition to the three coming back we feel like we have added two really good golfers,” said Parman said. “I think they will help our team, and I think as they gain experience they could end up scoring as high as our veterans.” Other team members include Brayden Nowlin, Clay Pitts, Hunter Stacks, Will Simmons, and Colton Flores. “We’ve got five new players who have never really played,” Parman said. “I think that the team winning and being successful has kind of sparked interest in golf. Hopefully they will stick with it and improve to be a good players in the future.” The Lady Vikings return Bre-

anna Nowlin and Riley Mitchell. The team’s third member is newcomer Meredith Gregory. “Those two were a big reason the girls ended up at state last year,” Parman said. “I think

pontotoc-progress.com • Pontotoc Progress

the girls have just as good of a chance to get back there as anybody.” Before this magazine went to press, the girls won their first match of the year, and the boys

tied for first. Mitchell finished first individually for the Lady Vikings. A good start to what both North squads hope is a year that ends with a trip back to the state tournament.
