The Pontotoc Warriors’ young team took off last season, rattling off 24 straight wins en route to a final record of 29-3. With every contributor returning, PHS is looking to have another very successful season and ultimately a deep postseason run. “They believed in the system and what we wanted do,” said second-year Pontotoc head coach Rolley Tipler. “I think progressing into this year, since we learned to believe in one another, they have confidence that they can compete.” Pontotoc is suddenly a veteran squad with six seniors in Manoj Nickson, Kourtland Armstrong, Caleb Hobson, Tres Vaughn, Austin Nickson and Whit Franklin. “Manoj has the ability to string three after three together. Once he starts feeling it, he can be that knockdown shooter, and every team needs one of those,” Tipler said. “He (Nickson) is willing to risk his body as well. Caleb is a super athlete. He has a nice mid-range and the ability to play above the rim, and he is one of our best defensive players. With a
couple of seasons under his belt, I think Kourtland will be a more seasoned point guard and be able to handle some pressure situations a little better. “Tres is a big, strong body that can help us match up with some of these physical teams around the basket. Austin Nickson plays with a lot of energy. You can have a seven footer, but if he does not have that dog in him he is not going to be very good for your team. He (Nickson) plays as hard as he can every night. Whit is the kind of kid who you know is going to give you everything he has when you call on him.” The Warriors have some length. Vaughn and Nickson come in at 6’3 and 6’4, respectively. Junior Rock Robinson provides a 6’5 matchup problem on the perimeter, with the ability to shoot the ball well and drive to the basket. He is also very active on the defensive end. After a very good season that saw him average 14.1 points, Robinson looks be one of the area’s top players. 6’5 sophomore Joe Haze Austin is a versatile and athletic stretch forward who is also primed for a big year. “What I like about those two is even after getting the recognition they have they are more worried about the team than themselves,” Tipler said.
Other players who are expected to contribute include returning backup point guard Dejarious Scott, a junior, sophomore Jaylen Edwards, newcomer Gavin Brinker, a freshman, and junior J.J. Washington. “Dejarious Scott is very athletic, and it will be hard to keep someone in front of him with his speed and agility,” Tipler said. “I think with him and Kourtland we can have a nice little one-two punch at the point guard spot. “Jaylen is going to be the next volume scorer; he has a very big upside. Once he gets a little better defensively he will get more and more minutes. Gavin is another kid with a high ceiling. He has a very high basketball IQ and knows what needs to go on out there. Once we get him settled into how we want to play and our philosophies, I think he will contribute a lot as a freshman. J.J. Washington will be an important role player. He will box out and rebound, take charges, those kinds of things. “We have a very hard schedule this year, and I think our belief and how mentally strong we are is going to be a big factor in how we are able to handle wins and losses. I think it (the schedule) will be a good character builder for where we want to go with this season.”

The Pontotoc Lady Warriors had a breakout year last season and became one of the top girls teams of the state. Pontotoc finished 28-3 and rolled through their divisional schedule and tournament without a loss, along the way picking up non-division signature wins over the likes of Starkville, Tupelo, Ingomar and Lafayette. However, the season came to an earlier than unexpected end when they were upset in the first round of the playoffs by New Albany. Now the Lady Warriors, with their entire team back, are determined to be a contender that plays deep into the postseason, and they have put together a challenging schedule that will ensure that they are battle tested. “We have our goals set out in front us; we know what it is we are trying to accomplish,” said Pontotoc head coach Kyle Heard. “We had a situation where we feel like we let ourselves down, because we should not have ended our season the way we did. I think we have grown from it and learned a lot about ourselves. “We’ve got some senior leadership now with five seniors, and so I am excited about that aspect of it. I think those
seniors are really going to motivate us and propel us to work hard toward our goals.” Senior DeeDee Shephard, who is committed to Division I Charleston Southern University, led the team in scoring a season ago with 18.3 points per game and provides lots of explosiveness and energy on both ends, as evidenced by her 3.1 steals per game as well. “She is fully capable of scoring in a lot of different ways,” coach Heard said. Shephard is coming back from an injury that caused her to miss the last several months. In her absence, junior Angela Middleton worked at guard, and she will transition to that position rather than the post. “She (Middleton) has really gotten comfortable in that role,” Heard said. “She rebounds as hard as anybody, and we look for be hard to block out as a guard. She handles the ball well and is shooting the ball better.” Sophomore center Samya Brooks provides a big threat down low. “We are expecting a big year out of Samya,” Heard said. “She has made some major advances through the summer and fall. She has really gained confidence about her ability as she has matured some. She is going to touch the ball a lot down there.”
Riley Stanford and Ariana Blockmon will also see minutes in the post. Junior Sky Vaughn and senior Amber McCoy are two more key pieces. “Sky is the kind of kid you want to have on your team, whether she is scoring or not, because she is such a team player,” Heard said. “She wants to guard the best player. She wants to rebound. She is tough to take off the floor. “Amber can really score the ball and is very good on-ball defender.” Senior Jadyn Spears and sophomore Allie Beckley will both see time at point guard. “I feel as good about our point guard position as I do any thing,” Heard said. “Allie and Jadyn both complement each other so well. They are both improving their ability to score and getting another dimension as well. I think it is going to be pretty hard to put pressure on us with two good point guards.” Sloan Sansing, MaKayla Boyd and Emily Walker, when she returns from injury, provide important depth. “Sloan is a dirty work player, she is going to take your charges and that sort of thing,” Heard said. “She is shooting the ball very well right now, and I expect her to have a good year. MaKayla has worked really hard and is coming into her own. Emily can shoot the ball as well as anybody.”

North Pontotoc won 15 games last season with a young and inexperienced roster. Head coach Chris Parman watched his team go through some growing pains last season but saw a lot of growth and development in his players, and his expectations remain high. “We are returning everyone but one player from last year,” said coach Parman. “If the players can learn their roles, play their roles and do it well then we can be a pretty good team and win a lot of games.” Junior guard Ty Roberson, the Vikings’ leading scorer last season, returns to bolster a lineup that is more experienced and stronger. “We changed our offense so we aren’t so dependent upon him,” said coach Parman. “If he has an off night we can still compete and score.” The Vikings are still a bit undersized as they were last season, but coach Parman liked what he saw in the weight room and the physical development of Jordan Meaders, who will be relied upon for a lot of rebounds and will need to play above the rim for the Vikings. “He has gotten a lot stronger and shot the ball well this summer,” said coach Parman. “He is one of our only guards who I think can battle consis-
tently for rebounds and create some shots for us in the post, and that will be huge for us as a team.” Andrew Wilder will be another name to watch this season. “He has really improved offensively since last year and will have a role for us,” said coach Parman. “All four of our seniors will have a role for us too, and I expect big things from them as well.” The Vikings’ seniors are Kenaan Lockridge, Kyle Sappington, Sam Dowdy and Jacoree Westmoreland. This season will be a test for the Vikings on the hard court as they are

moving into Region 1-4A for the first time and competing against tougher competition. “Our schedule is definitely harder with us moving into a new classification, but if we can get out of our division then our chances to play a lot of meaningful basketball late in the season increase a lot,” said coach Parman. “The biggest thing affecting our success will be how our strong offseason in the weight room translates to how we play on the court. If we can get our guards to help out in the post and give us more chances down there then we will be alright.”

Aggressive underclassmen supporting experienced players, as well as building on strong defense to end last season, should help the North Pontotoc Lady Vikings be a very formidable team again this year. “Anticipation and expectations are high, and our depth should be an asset,” said North Pontotoc head coach Matt Waldrop. North moves up in division this year in MHSAA classification to 4A after a 22-win season in 3A last year, and Waldrop feels good about their preparedness. “We’re working hard and we’re looking forward to competing hard,” Waldrop said. The Lady Vikings limped through summer play with several marquee players sidelined with injuries, but Waldrop said they are healthy and ready to go. Last season’s leading scorer Shemiah Hadley should help press the pace on offense, Waldrop said, along with Maddie Guerin, who can play both in the paint and on the perimeter, as well as Riley Mitchell. Among those returning from injuries is point guard Macey Thomas, who Waldrop described as a great court general who creates opportunities for other players. Sophomore Bindi Seale,
senior Belle Ross, and junior Haisley Coker are among those Waldrop said he expects to add quality minutes. The girls coming up from junior high are exceptionally competitive, Waldrop said. “They have a good, strong record and are not intimidated by stepping up to the varsity level,” said Waldrop. “They relish that role in practice, and they should be a strong presence for us this year.” Anna Brooke Sullivan, Gracie Corley, Lizzie Tutor, and Abi Grace Warren are some of the scrappy underclassmen Waldrop said will add depth

to the roster. Waldrop said the Lady Vikings will face plenty of strong teams that hopefully will get them ready. “Of course, we’ll play the Ingomars and other tough area teams, perennial powerhouses,” said Waldrop. As for the commitment to defense, Waldrop said the Lady Vikings tore off a string of nine wins in late January and early February, and defense was a key component. “We want to build on that, and with the tough schedule we’ll play, we certainly feel like we’ll be competitive,” said Waldrop.

South Pontotoc’s boys hoops program faces a difficult task this season, moving up to Class 4A with an roster short on experience and one that lost the lion’s share of their offensive production. “We’ve only got a few guys who have played significant minutes at the varsity level,” said South head coach Shane Murphree. “We are not really young. We have got four seniors and five juniors. We are just inexperienced. It’s going to take a little bit of time to figure out roles.” South’s returning players that contributed a season ago are senior Alex Collins, senior Will Reeves, junior Stoud Mills and junior Aaron Pilcher. “We need some of those guys to step up and do what they have not been called on to do in the past, which is score more for us,” Murphree said. “Alex is our best defensive player. He does a good job of being able to guard guards or big, whatever we ask him to do. He is moving into a new role this year. He is going from a
guard to playing more inside. “Stroud (Mills) has been one of the leaders for us as for as attitude, and he is a pretty good all around player. Will Reeves is probably our best rebounder, and we need to continue to develop his game to score inside. “Aaron (Pilcher) is a pretty good offensive player as far as getting to the rim, drawing a lot of fouls and things like that.” A newcomer, junior transfer Parker Blansett, will be a important piece. Blansett will one of the Cougars’ primary ball handlers and is working at the point guard position at press time.
Senior Skylar Holloway is expected to play some big minutes for the Cougars, along with junior Eli Austin and senior Haydon Billingsley. Also in the mix is sophomore wing Jayden Hooker, who Murphree hopes can knock down key shots, and freshman Trace Ash. “We are going to have to make up for our lack of size and scoring ability by playing really hard. I feel like we have been working hard,” Murphree said. “Our attitude has been good and effort has been good. Everyone has been positive and upbeat and are ready for a challenge.”

The South Pontotoc Lady Cougars had a big year in 2018-19 with a 28-5 record, division tournament championship and state quarterfinal appearance. South lost a good bit of talent and veteran leadership, and third-year coach Bill Russell is still getting a read on this year’s team and what it will take to be successful. “We are getting better,” coach Russell said. “We’ve still got a long way to go of course, and you don’t want to be your best right now for sure. It is just going to be a process. We’ve got several kids that don’t have a lot of really valuable minutes as far as the game being on the line and that kind of thing.” The Lady Cougars return four players with significant playing time. However, most of their roles have to expand quite a bit after South lost a stout senior class that was a big part of their success in 2018-19, a group that included three Northeast Mississippi Basketball Coaches Association All-Stars. The Lady Cougars’ leading scorer for the past two seasons, sophomore Rebekah Pilcher, will slide over to
the point guard position. Other key returners are sophomore Sydney Brazil, senior Anna Catherine Roye and senior Maisy Canerdy. “Rebekah is definitely the most experienced player we have back,” Russell said. “She is moving from the 2 to the 1, so she is going to be playing a different spot, but she has played a whole lot and we will be counting on her to do a lot for us and lead us there.” “Sydney played some big minutes last year and shot the ball well, but she is going to have to do more than shoot it and will have a different role. Maisy and Anna Catherine split time starting last year, and they also have
valuable minutes. Anna Catherine is moving positions; we are going to move her out on the perimeter a little bit. So we’ve got four kids who have experience.” Sophomore Laila Houpt, who Russell says has had good a good summer and fall, and junior Brianna Jamison were batting for a starting spot as the season tipped off. Other players in the mix for playing time were freshman Maggie Gaspard, sophomore Caroline Cook and newcomer Emma Irby, a junior transfer from Oxford. “Maggie is doing really well; I’ve been pleased with her progress,” Russell said. “And I’ve been pleased with Caroline. She’s going to battle for a spot. She plays hard and is strong and tough. Emma has come in and fit in really well and is learning the system. She’s sitting right there trying to get in that rotation. “As we play some games and get into the season I can see the direction we need to go as far as depth and style. The way I like to play, you have to play eight or nine kids, but also you have to adjust the way you like to play to what you have. Our depth is definitely a question mark. Hopefully, we will have some kids develop and by mid-season we will be able to play the style I want to.”

The Pontotoc Warriors put together their best soccer season in years in 2018-19, going 19-3 and winning a division championship. Head coach Tyler Moore credited the success to great leadership, a close knit team and a better understanding and execution of the nuances of the game. He is hopeful those will be key parts of a lasting culture of success. “I think last year really set the tone, set the foundation for what we are trying to do as a program,” Moore said. “We did lose some good players, but the good thing is we have it set up to where every year we have a good crop of seniors. “This group has the potential to go as far as they want to go.” The Warriors have a deep senior class of eight players- Reed Emison, Miles Galloway, Jolan Mills, Ross Mathews, Robert Ramos, Michael
Moore, Ronald Mejia and Austin Tzib. “I think our strength will be knowledge of the game,” coach Moore said. “These seniors will be the first ones I have had for a full six years. We are starting to learn the game a little better, such as knowing how we want to move the ball and what our goal as a team is. I think we know that better now than we ever have before. “All our way from our keeper and defense to our midfield and forwards we have returning starters that contributed majorly. I think in each of those areas they are going to be able to help others who don’t have as much experience understand what we are trying to do.” Senior goalkeeper Jolan Mills had a breakout year last year and was dominant in the net. Miles Galloway is an experienced returning starter at defender. Dylan Shipton, who played significantly a season ago, also comes back. Blayze
Haynes and Ashton Maffett are new to defense but are reliable and smart players. “They are experienced,” coach Moore said. “They know soccer well. It is just going to be a new role for them.” The Warriors have a number of players who they can play in several different spots. “That’s going to be another one of our strengths,” Moore said. “We’ve got so many people that we can rotate in and out in our attacking half of our midfield to our forwards. We’ve got Reed Emison, Ross Mathews, Enrique Mendoza, Brayden Arratia, Spencer Bass, Robert Ramos, Kevin Martinez, and Jaron Hernandez. Depending on who we play, I know I can put any of those guys at any of those positions and they will play at a very high level.” Alan Morales is newcomer that Moore expects to be an offensive threat up top and someone the Warriors will look to get the ball to.

Pontotoc hopes a more veteran squad this year can increase its scoring output and come out on the right side of close matches. The Lady Warriors had a number of hard fought losses that easily could have swung the other way last season. They lost four division games, six total, by one goal. “The way our division is this year it could easily go the same way (with narrowly-decided games),” head coach Justin Jensen said. “We are building of off last season, which I think showed how good we could have been. Hopefully this year we will be on the winning side of more of those. Our girls have grown up a lot since last year and learned that every little thing matters in a match. “We expect to be really, really competitive. We’ve just got to figure out a way to put some balls in the back of the net.” PHS brings back five key seniors-
Katie Munlin, Katie Hogue, Megan Linley, Brenda Mendoza and Jaleesha Dandridge. There is a big age gap after that, with the majority of the roster made up of freshmen. “Some of these freshmen are going to have to step up for us if we are going to win those games,” Jensen said. Freshman Jaycie Walker will take over at goalkeeper for the Lady War-
riors. “She has improved tremendously since last year, and I have all of the confidence in the world in her,” coach Jensen said. Defensively, the unit will be anchored by senior center back Jaleesha Dandridge. Playing along with her are two other veterans, outside backs Abby Feathers and De’Aisha Browner. Multi-year starter Katie Munlin will be again be a key cog at left center midfielder. Other important pieces there are right center-mid Kareli Mendoza and Brenda Mendoza at attacking center mid. Also in the midfield, Shelby Tigner will play out wide on the left side, with Katie Hogue on the right. At forward the Lady Warriors will utilize the talents of Megan Linley and Avery Walton. “Our defense is good enough that we are going to keep it close,” Jensen said. “Our goal this season to score two goals every game. We’ve got to score and we’ve got to make our chances count.”

The North Pontotoc Vikings soccer program has experienced a lot of success on the pitch under the tutelage of head coach Donnie Sellers, as North has reached the playoffs for seven straight years. The Vikings moved up in classification and will be playing in Region1-4A this season, but the expectations for the team remain high. “I expect it to be difficult transition for us because 4A North is loaded,” said coach Sellers. “We could struggle early on, but I think as we gain more experience and confidence we can compete in the division and get back to the playoffs.” The Vikings return eight starters, and coach Sellers is left with three spots in his line up to fill. “We have to find a midfielder, defender and a goalie,” Sellers said. “I have a good idea who they are, and we have a few guys who should step up and separate themselves. I just need to see them perform in games before I will know who my best eleven are.” Juniors Samuel Franco and Gavin Dyer are returning and will be relied upon heavily as leaders, because on most nights the offense will run through them.
“Gavin is moving to forward this year, and I look for him to be a big threat for us up front,” said coach Sellers. “Samuel will play outside mid for us, and he is really skilled at setting up our offense and getting the ball to where it needs to be.” Freshman Eric Gonzalez stepped up last year as an 8th grader and played some meaningful minutes, and he will need to continue to play well for the Vikings to succeed in 4A. “I’m looking at playing him in the middle, because he has really good foot skills and is a smart, fast player who will create a lot of opportunities for us,” Sellers said. “Hopefully that

will translate into more goals.” The Vikings will lean on two senior defenders, Colin Copeland and West Sutton, to stifle opposing teams’ attacks. Junior defender Javier Ramirez will also be back and will be relied upon for his hard-nosed style of play. “We are as young and inexperienced as I have seen us in 6-7 years,” said coach Sellers. “We are going to have to have some young guys step up and fill in our open spots and to help build depth on our bench. I think we just need a few games and some time to figure that out, because most of them have never played in a high school game.”

North Pontotoc girls soccer will be led by first-year head coach Kyle Robbins this season. He will have six starters returning and will be relying on young and inexperienced players to fill in the holes in his roster as North tries to figure out how to navigate their first season in Region 1-4A. It is a challenge he is looking forward to. “We are returning a few really experienced players, but we are mostly young,” Robbins said. “I’m really looking forward to getting the season started and playing some games so I can evaluate things and put the best eleven players on the field.” North returns their leading scorer in sophomore forward Liz Tovar. “The offense will run through her,” said coach Robbins. “She always brings a lot of energy in practice and in games, is always smiling and working hard, and it shows on game days.” Also returning is senior midfielder Brianna Mathis, who will also be a larger contributor in setting up the offense. “She is so versatile and can play anywhere,” Robbins said. “She has really good ball control skills and sees the field well.”
Karley Robbins will anchor the defense. The senior will rely upon her experience, as she has manned the back line since the 7th grade. “Her and Brianna have played together for a long time,” said coach Robbins. “It’s a relief as a coach to know we have someone back there that can help our young players and put them in the right position.” Maria Tinajero and Gaby Gonzalez are also returning starters who will be playing midfield for the Lady Vikings, and they will be relied upon as well.

YOUNG LADY VIKINGS EMBRACE CHALLENGE
North lost a quite a few close games last season, and with a little seasoning and some time the Lady Vikings can flip those close losses to wins. “I think as the season goes on we will definitely get better and can win a few more of those games,” said coach Robbins. “We have a pretty tough schedule early on, and if we continue working hard, learning and getting some meaningful game experience we will get better. I think that will put us in a position to win more games than we did last year.”

South Pontotoc boys soccer has a new coach this season, as Chris Vineyard takes over the program at his alma mater. The Cougars have struggled over the past few years and face the challenge of competing in Class 4A for the first time this season, and Vineyard is looking to lay the foundation for the future in 2019-20. “We are young and we are trying to build a program,” Vineyard said. “We are trying to instill the idea of toughness. We wear shirts every day that say ‘relentless’ on the back because that is the way we want to play. We are trying to build on the basics and get better every day.” South graduated a number of key players, but the Cougars bring back a number of returners including Ivan Martinez, Rene Martinez, the team’s lone senior Jacob Bard, Braxton Ratliff, Sean Mooneyham, Salvador Diaz, Caleb Tuggle, Angel Garcia, Ezequiel Martinez, Noah Fleming, Marcus Holley, Aiden Sprinkle and Gable Steward. Marcus Holley is slated to start at goalie, and Vineyard expects him to have a good year.
“He does a lot of lessons, goalkeeper-specific stuff, so he will be a really good piece for us,” he said. Vineyard expects Angel Garcia and Kendalle Morphis to contribute at defender, while the other defensive spots are still to be determined. Offensively, the Cougars have a number of talented pieces and players with experience, including Ivan Martinez, Rene Martinez, eighth graders Noah Fleming and Gable Steward, and Salvador Diaz. “Our returners from our offensive midfielders to our forwards are really good ball handlers; those guys have the ability to score and score quickly,
and that will be a valuable asset for us,” Vineyard said. A lot of positions were still up the air at press time due to limited practice time, but others in the mix include Jacob Bard, Caleb Tuggle, Ezequiel Martinez and Sean Monneyham. Vineyard’s main goal for the season to see his squad improve. “The win-loss record is not really what we are looking at at this point, but we do look to compete in the games that we should compete in,” he said. “I am looking for these older guys to help set a foundation for our program moving forward into the future that we can be proud of.”

The South Pontotoc girls soccer program is still going to be young in 2019-20 after losing some key seniors and other players for various reasons. The Lady Cougars also face the added challenge of moving into a tough Class 4A division. “We’ve got a little more age as far as not having as many junior high players, but for most part I have a new, fresh team,” second-year coach Kayleigh Hodum said. “We’ve got the athletic ability. We are just trying to tone that into a good soccer-playing team.” Lana Holley is one of the Lady Cougars’ most veteran players, and she will be counted on for her versatility. “She was a good asset for our defense last year,” Hodum said. “We are going to use her again there, and hopefully we will be able to use her as like a defensive/mid type position. That way she can play both, wherever I need her.” Chelle Corder, Leah Montgomery, and Nikki Raines will be key pieces in the midfield. Hodum also looks for Kenna Chisholm to be an offensive
threat. “I think that it is important to know the game and all the details of the game to be the best you can be,” coach Hodum said. “We need to learn how to use every single minute of the game to our advantage. That’s what I am trying to get across to them. “Last year my team did everything that I wanted them do and laid it all out on the field, and as a coach you really can’t ask for anything more than heart and effort.

LADY COUGARS STRIVE FOR CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT
“We got better and were not the same team the last game of the season that we were when the season started. With all of the newcomers we are really having to teach the game, and so I think it will a lot like last year because of that. “Leadership not just from me as the coach but also among the players is important for success, and wins are great but they don’t solely define success. We’re just striving for improvement throughout the season.”

WARRIOR BOWLERS ENTER SEASON WITH EXPERIENCE AND OPTIMISM Galen Holley Sports Writer
A combination of experience and enthusiasm is the formula for success that the Pontotoc High School bowling teams hope to parlay into wins this season, according to coach Nathan Bailey. “Almost all our team is returning this season, and that’s a huge plus,” said Bailey, who takes over the reins after serving as assistant coach for two years. Among the ladies, Bailey expects senior Tierra Zinn and southpaw Bre Porter, both All-Region performers in 2018-19, to provide leadership and solid play. Also returning are Sara Kitchens, Cadence Griffin, Layla Tutor, Maddie Moorman, Lexi McGregor, Taylor Bramlett and Carla Ramirez.

The Lady Warriors went 10-4-1 and won the Class II North regional title last season to qualify for the state tournament for a second straight year, and the team hopes to work toward contending once again when regional time comes around. Both the Lady Warriors and Warriors will compete in this season in Class II, Region 1 along with county rival North Pontotoc, New Albany, Lafayette, Itawamba AHS, Cleveland Central and Center Hill. “These girls are solid competitors, and I know they’ll step up to the challenge this year,” said Bailey. The men of the tribe return six from a 9-6 team in 2018-19. Aaron Littlejohn bowls two-handed and provides consistency, Bailey said. Cameron Chunn is another solid player, along with other veterans Will Porter, Johnny Kelly III, Carson Long, Landen Johnson, and Anthony Osborne.
The Warrior bowlers started practicing in early October, and this year they are in a new venue, Event Zona in Tupelo. They used to practice at Rebel Lanes. Bailey said the change is significant. “We will be bowling on synthetic lanes, instead of wood,” said Bailey. “The ball reacts differently on a synthetic surface, and you don’t get the kind of variations and flaws you might get on an older, traditional wooden surface.” High school bowling is catching on around northeast Mississippi, and that’s great, Bailey said. “It isn’t super strenuous, and most everybody can enjoy it,” said Bailey. “Many of the bowlers who join our team are bowling for the first time. Leagues in the area range from young children up through adults, and it’s really a family friendly sport.”

VIKINGS HOPE TO MAKE STRIDES IN 2019-20 Jonathan Wise Sports Editor
The North Pontotoc bowling teams return a good mix of experience and newcomers, and coach Bob Wingo simply looks for continued improvement throughout the season in order to put the respective teams in the best position to compete well at the regional tournament. North’s boys have a number of veterans returning, including Hunter Miles, Tate Ellis, Colton Turner, Gage Chism, Garrett Oglesby, Cole Montogomery, Jackson Harlow and Jed Fitts, a player Wingo says has shown a propensity to make significant strides during the season. Blake McGlofin is
Winter Sports 2019-2020
a player who scored well during tryouts, and Wingo thinks he has the potential to have a solid year. Lillian Angle is a long-time player that will be counted to lead the girls team. Maly Mae Fitts is another consistent bowler for Lady Vikings. Other returners are Serenity Clayton, Addison Clements, Riley Sappington, Aubrey Holcomb and Kari Wise. Bindi Seale is new bowler that has been impressive so far. “We have had several kids still playing other sports (at press time),” coach Bob Wingo said. “During tryouts most of their scores came in higher than is normally the case, so that was good that maybe we are starting from a little better position from which to improve on.”
Some early scores from the teams’ newcomers have been better than even some the North returners, and Wingo is hoping competition among his own roster will help the team be better as a whole. He plans to use different lineups to get a feel for who can give the team the best chance late in the year. “We are going to rotate our players,” Wingo said. “Bowling is set up to where regardless of how you do during the season, if you perform well at regionals you can go to the state tournament. So I always try to play them all throughout the season and let them get some experience so I can see if they are improving.” North will use Event Zona in Tupelo as the venue for their home matches this season.
