Master of The House! A Brief word from inHouse Editor Dan Carter Everyone remembers his or her first trip to Ibiza. Regardless of the financial situation, the crowd that joined you or your own personal taste in music, it is impossible to overlook the natural charm and contagious energy that the island has boasted since the 1960’s. What continues to amaze me is the ever growing reaction to the island’s simple appointment: to lead the way for modern clubbing culture in the glare of the Balearic sun for an entourage of dedicated individuals across the globe. It was reassuring to learn that even amongst the biggest stars of the global Dance music industry, the same sense of overwhelming progression has continued to amaze, astound and infuse people to return to what has be continuously described as ‘the clubbers Mecca’! My first experience of true Ibiza clubbing felt somewhat like an induction to REAL clubbing. It was the second Tuesday of July and the venue was Amnesia nightclub, famous for a continuous stream of quality nights and that legendary ending scene from ‘Kevin and Perry Go Large’. No word of mouth nor cinematic experience could have prepared me for the epiphany that would greet me for the following seven hours of Roger Sanchez’s momentous sets that have continued to establish him as House music’s most powerful live acts. To explore 11 years of this momentous night was an absolute honour for the sheer fact that, three years ago, Roger Sanchez taught me what Ibiza was all about. What makes Ibiza is simple: The seductive sun, the sexy music and the sensational energy that knows no end. In the same vein as ‘The S Man’ taught me about Ibizan clubbing, inHouse has since strived to teach the world about global clubbing; and what sort of role models would we be without opening the
door to the same magic that has kept me moonlighting to cover low-cost flights every summer, without fail! Therefore, we took to the White Isle to bring you a first hand insight into the magic that this Balearic wonder has become renowned for; speaking exclusively to the master of British Techno Carl Cox about a decade of his residency ‘Revolution’ at Space nightclub, to chart 10 years of dynamic partying and the celebration of his highly anticipated fourth artist album. Pepe Rosello then gives provides the fascinating story of the home of Revolution: Space Ibiza for an inHouse exclusive that dives into the rich history of Rosello’s unique brand of clubbing. We also delve into the future of the island’s vibrant soundtrack with Sidney Samson, Riva Starr and Max Vangeli chatting exclusively about the approaching summer season. ‘The music i make?
From the Italian underground to moustache-clad babies on MTV, the antics of Riva Starr have been nothing short of momentous. But amongst the frantic work ethic of Stefano Miele, the renowned Neapolitan wanderer has successfully established himself as one of the globes most forwardthinking House assets to date, spreading his infectious brand of ethnically induced House across the world in a bid to bring music back out of the box. Amongst celebrations of a year of his signature imprint ‘Snatch Records’, Miele spoke with Dan Carter about over ten years of unpretentious electronic music, an incredibly prosperous first year for the made man of Italian House music’s label.

in 2007, Stefano Miele has risen from strength to strength with a sound so unique and infectious that the world has been unable to ignore it. His full-length debut ‘If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade’ championed the Riva Starr moniker with an infectious array of groove-clad Balkan anthems as well as his sensational single alongside French duo Noze, ‘I Was Drunk’, which without the tedium of Yolanda Be Cool and D-Cup’s chart-scouring ‘We Speak No Americano’, singlehandedly gave House music a well deserved kick in the behind. Whilst the Italian lifestyle and Mediterranean culture may be the stuff of dreams for the majority of humble Brits, Miele’s sights were set on the colder climates of London, where the producer is now based. He explained: “I have al-

ways been focused on the new releases and styles of music coming out of London and so eventually, the move over here seemed the natural thing to do. So many vital elements of the industry can be found here and so there was an automatic advantage to basing myself nearest the heart of it all.” 10 years in the making, Stefano tirelessly channelled and developed himself as an artist: a process that has seen him muster records for both Virgin and Edel in his home country, as well as a brief period of break beat productions as MADOX. “It has been a long journey to say the least. I found my feet as a House producer under the Riva Starr alias and from there it all really kicked off, so I haven’t looked back.” When Stefano says that his work as Riva Starr took off, he really isn’t kidding. Having scoured the globe with his unique blend of Balkan induced House music the Italian producer has found himself immersed in the challenge of taking his music to the people that want it: a task which would be seemingly easy was it not for the producer’s

rising popularity. “The key for me was to always remain busy,” Miele explained. “As ‘Riva Starr’, I have been tirelessly working on original tracks and remixes and touring the globe whenever possible. Last year I played something like 150 gigs, which was really tiring, but also a great opportunity to push my sound out to everywhere physically possible.” Despite the phenomenal legwork on Miele’s behalf, the Neapolitan sensation is still amazed by the globe’s positive reactions to his diverse array of House grooves, Mediterranean flares, vintage samples: which was perfectly collected in his 2010 full-length debut. “I don‘t know why people received this fusion of styles so well. Maybe it is because they are not pretentious. The music I make is just pure fun, both to make and to play and I think that has been a big part of it. I’ve always been fond of traditional/roots music, all the way from Reggae to Batucada, Fado, African tribal music and Balkan music, so it felt normal for me to make something with those kinds of styles in it.”
Snatch n Grab
In a bid to can the positive and unpretentious vibes of his work, Stefano established his own imprint, Snatch! Records as a home to the quirky and creative music that Miele has both made and admired over the past several years. He explained: “The label was born to give a voice to Dance music with no boundaries. Of course we’ve got our own sound and of course I choose what has to be released, but I like that even big producers just release their creativity and fantasy trying to do
something different when it comes to making tracks for Snatch!” During it’s first year, Snatch! Has pioneered the industry with track after track of mind-blowing House music free of the tedium that the celebrated genre too often falls victim too. Whilst embracing the fresh future of the industry as well as bagging a few wellestablished industry players, camp Snatch! has proven over the past year that not only is there a market for this unpretentious House music, but they are dominating it! “I’m definitely trying to create a proper crew of new artists that I believe will deliver amazing tunes in the future and it really seems to be coming together. It isn’t an easy task and you have to give them time to improve and get enough experience to grow as an artist. Fans will definitely be hearing more from the likes of Jet Project, Pirupa, John Made, Pablo Rez, Prince Club and Adam Port, as well as the likes of Ramon Tapia and Butch.” After his full-blown onslaught of the music industry as Riva Starr, you would have thought that the prospect of running a label would be an easy task for someone with the work ethics and passion of Stefano Miele. However, the Neapolitan producer holds no shame in admitting that whilst a year strong, the establishment and maintenance of his imprint was far from a walk in the park. “This has definitely been harder than I was expecting,” he confessed. “It’s not easy to fix schedules, liaise with artists and all the things that come with running a label. Luckily, I have an amazing
management team that is helping me a lot on that side and as it develops more and more people are hearing about Snatch, which is a great feeling!”
Starr-y Eyed
But with the milestone celebrations taken care of in the form of an exciting birthday bash EP, Stefano is not short of work. Having dropped the recent ‘Future Underground’ compilation alongside British DJ and Radio personality Pete Tong, the prospect of a followup to ‘If Life Gives You Lemons’ is on the cards for a 2011 release. “The album is in the works already and there are going to be tonnes of exciting collaborations for this new record,” Miele Explained. “I have also finished a load of new tracks to drop over summer, so there is plenty of fun stuff on the cards for Riva Starr!”
Thus the inspiring work ethic and contagious sounds of Stefano Miele promises a future of unassuming House music under the watchful eyes of Riva Starr: a figure set to bring the enjoyment of creativity back to the mechanical world of modern Dance music.

For Carl Cox, a legacy has emerged that not only illustrates the London bred DJ and producer as Britain’s essential Techno warrior, but the living, breathing and ever-operative relic of a nation that has essentially pioneered global Dance music. With his groundbreaking fifth studio album ready to explode on the unsuspecting industry and the forthcoming 10th anniversary of his residency ‘Revolution’ at Space Ibiza, Carl Cox assured Dan Carter that amongst all this retrospect, our British envoy is still fueled by the music he has lived and breathed for over three decades!
Space Man!
Any artist can travel the world and play
at every major club it has to offer, but the sensation of celebrating such a landmark in your performing career is one that not even Carl Cox can play down to the press. “You could be cutting grass for 10 years and people would say ‘wow, that is an achievement’, so naturally it is quite a special year for me,” he said. In reflection of the decade of all-out Techno wizardry and his unrestricted full-throttle party experience at the legendary Balearic home of diverse Electronic music, Cox stands as an artist both humbled by the prospect of this significant partnership in the name of summer clubbing and excited by the island’s uninterrupted thirst for his essential addition to the Techno summer party calendar. Cox explained: “It is amazing that people are still into the music, the lifestyle and are still so enthusiastic about clubbing and I am both proud and honored to get to this point. This year will very much be a celebration of the progress we have made at Space and reinstating that we put on a real good party.”

But wait, were these last few years not those that promoters on the White Isle were predicted to feel the wrath of an uncertain financial climate within Europe? Try telling that to the Sovereign of Space Ibiza and Britain’s dry-eyed ambassador, both of whom have continued to raise a celebratory glass every September to celebrate another lucrative year of packedout dance-floors and world-renowned recognition. After a decade of fueling the dance floors of Space, Carl Cox appears to have found the recession proof scenario for overseas clubbing. “I think our success comes down to the fact that people around the world know that I put on a really good party,” explained Cox. “Whether people are into the music or not they come on the reputation of Space and myself alone. After so many years within the industry I like to think that people recognise that I have the ability to give the crowds the best time possible. What is even better is that many people seem come all the way to the island just for our night, so you really want to make it worth the money!” But despite his undeniable vigor within global Dance music, Cox is not one to lay it on thick, accepting that whilst his own name suggests a stable source of the globes finest Electronic music, without a world-class club and team behind you, those treasured dance floor memories that have encapsulated Ibiza just cannot be made. He explained: “The knowledge and charisma that the team at Space bring to proceedings has meant that we can give clubbers the best value for their money with incredible international acts from across the industry, all whilst maintaining a consistent atmosphere for people to enjoy themselves.” When the likes of John Digweed, Fatboy Slim and Fedde Le Grand are turning
up to support your club nights, you would be forgiven in comprehending that somewhere along the lines, you are doing something terribly right. It is a combination of these exclusive surprise guests and Carl’s selection of groundbreaking resident DJs, including fellow Techno Heavyweight Umek, Usef and Nic Fanciulli that made 2010 such an affluent year for the team behind Ibiza’s crucial clubbing revolution. In the same vein, Cox recognises that with so much positive ground covered, the only option is to make their 10th anniversary romp bigger, better and louder. “Last year our three resident DJs put on an amazing show every night and truly fueled the club with the perfect energy you would expect from Revolution; you couldn’t really ask for more,” explained Cox. “It felt like we really hit the right balance with our guests and resident and so this year we will look to continue this positive work, but there has to be something special for such a landmark occasion, so people should be ready for a few surprises along the way.” As well as a celebration of 10 years of epic Techno music, the congregation of animated clubbers from across the globe and some of the fondest memories of his career, June 2011 will mark the 10th year of Carl Cox’s familial relationship with the legendary Balearic hub of vivacious Electronic music, Space. Reflecting on the development of the nightclub, which itself has seen out 21 years of uncensored hedonistic clubbing culture, Carl explained: “As I have continued to grow and thrive within the industry, Space has been growing up alongside me all the way, both as a club and as a brand. With the new terrace and all the work they have done outside I think it is the best club on the island, both musically and physically.” Over the past ten years of tuesday night sets for Cox, the thrill of playing Ibiza’s

celebrated terrace has never died and with ten years of collaboration between the club and himself, Cox cannot help but mark his respect for this essential outlet of pure Eivissan charm. “The atmosphere as you pull up in the car park has never been more breathtaking and that ‘wow’ factor has always fueled my love for Space nightclub. It is truly amazing to see the club where it is today after so many years and to still be playing there is an absolute honor. This year will definitely be one to remember for everyone.”
Techno Heavyweight!
Following 34-years of unwavering commitment to his craft, Carl Cox has truly been there, seen it, bought the T Shirt and had his name branded to it. So, with so much ground already covered, what could there possibly be left for the father of British Techno to achieve? “I often find myself reflecting on this and I suppose there isn’t much more for me to achieve in a sense,” laughed Carl. “I have done every club imaginable, both huge and intimate, every big global festival on offer, we are touching 50-odd million a week with the radio show, I am now onto my fourth big record. On top of this I have survived a ten year residency in Ibiza and many more on the island before that and if I am honest, the overall feeling surrounding all that is somewhat immense.” But the reward of worldwide recognition and his ‘ambassador’ status has been enough to keep Cox infatuated with his essentially calling within Dance music and fans can be assured that this is enough to keep Carl injecting the world with explosive new music for years to come. “It means so much to have opened doors with what I do and in turn I really feel like I have become some sort of ambassador for the scene,” he explained, adding: “I may not be chasing anything anymore but so long as I can keep it fresh and vibrant for the fans and community then I will be happy, though it doesn’t get much better than what I am doing right now!” For now, the show must go on and judging by the Techno Heavyweights undying enthusiasm for Electronic music and the culture that surrounds it, it will be one to remember.
“There is no chance of retirement just yet, I feel young and happy and allegedly I still look it, so for now the only option is to keep working away. There is no denying that there will be a time to hang up the headphones and stop DJing, but even then I would have to continue working behind the scenes with Intec and putting on amazing nights.” Beautifully summarising the driving passion that will surely seal Carl Cox as one of the industry’s most enthralling figures, there is no doubt that the big man remains one of the Britain’s most genuinely enthusiastic and driven artists of the past 30 years; displaying an outright passion and creativity that will outlive the base limits of mortality and continue to enfold the world in the positive energy and resonance of Carl’s musical legacy. “The record may stop; but after so many amazing years and fond memories of doing something that I truly love, I could never quit doing what I do. There is no doubt that I am hooked for life and it doesn’t get much better than that!”

Ibiza has always been the true Spanish spectacle of hedonistic lifestyle and creative innovation, from it’s early hippy roots straight through to the modern clubbers mecca we see today. In the late 80’s, one man’s undying passion for music led to the establishment of one of the island’s most renowned clubbing spots to date. Now, 22-years down the line, Pepe Rosello’s unique blend of Electronic music and Balaeric bliss has never looked healthier amongst the hustle and bustle of Ibizan club culture. Dan Carter caught up with the master of Space to talk about the tests, trials and tribulations of making musical history.
A history of CLubbing
Impassioned by the popular music of the 1960’s, Rosello became convinced that the future of his already lucrative business ventures on the island would be in the creative world of global music. He explained: “ I came to realise that music was both a passion and an artistic phenomenon that was shared across the globe by like-minded people. The way it allowed people rise away from the more immediate problems of life and unify people in such a sensational way was absolutely staggering and so I decided that I wanted to something as equally positive for global music.” Of course, the early crowds of the Balearic Island varied from its contemporary clubber. As the hippy capital of Spain, that renowned freedom of spirit moved Rosello to his greatest clubbing venture to date: Space Ibiza.

Rosello explained:”The energy, the passion for beautiful music and the undying spirit of the community.. that is Ibiza and my aim was to create one brand that personified the excitement of Ibizan life.” The concept was simple: a huge terrace, a view of the sun rising and the island’s longest parties. “The day and the night are two contrasting things and both bring new energy to the table,” explained Rosello. “In unifying the two of them within one clubbing experience, I felt that we were giving people the best of both worlds: the ability to party throughout the night and welcome the new day in style and comfort. It was a risky venture, but it seems to have really worked.”
Take-Off
Whilst an immediately risky venture for Rosello and his team, 1989 saw Space erupt onto the Ibizan club scene, establishing a beacon of hope for the promising Playa d’en Bossa region. “I really liked the venture because whilst it sounded risky, without risk you are unlikely to change the world. Playa d’en Bossa was a road without a soul in 89; it was filled with hotels designed for mass tourism and a beach with very little going on. When we set up shop, we laid the foundations for the unique development of the area which has led it to become the trendy spot you see today.” With risk comes natural opposition and within the legacy of Space, political distaste has seen the Rosello’s musical haven tested and challenged on many counts due to its ‘after-hours’ status. “It is fair to say that politicians have not photo s courtesy of Space Ibiza
been very flattering towards Ibiza’s club scene and where many have been ‘tolerant’, others have been openly opposed to his beautiful development for the island,” he explained. “They asked us to change our schedules for the sake of the surrounding areas and we did, only to find that many other areas were doing exactly what we had been asked. In my opinion, the politicians have confused matters slightly and a revision of these schedules is definitely in order.”
Limitless
Despite the loud opposition that has at times plagued Space, the past 22-years have seen the club rise from strength-tostrength, engaging in the exciting club scene and snapping up numerous awards for its dynamic nights of groundbreaking Electronic music. Amongst its favoured residents, Carl Cox has continued to bless the terrace with his legendary ‘Revolution’ night every Tuesday during the summer season. A decade in the making, Rosello and Cox’s relationship is one that both remain grateful for. “Carl was sent to the earth to bless the terrace and change the way people interpret Electronic music,” explained Rosello. “The public absolutely adore him and he deserves the worldwide recognition he has
received. It is an absolute pleasure to still be hosting his nights and I hope we can continue to host ‘Revolution’ for another decade!” As well as it’s continuous prosper within Ibiza, the continuous development of Space as a leading brand of clubbing has seen it reach out to the likes of Miami and Egypt in a bid to take the same exciting vibes that have kept Rosello’s team racking in the awards over the past 22-years. “It is reassuring to see that we have continued to receive appraisal from across the industry because as a result we have been able to cover more ground than we ever imagined. It is a cutthroat industry, especially in the considerably small area of Ibiza, so 22-years really means something to us!”
Unifying creative passion with lucrative business strategy, Pepe Rosello legacy of forward-thinking Ibizan clubbing has continued to inspire, regenerate and renew the island’s dictatorial status amongst the global music industry as the trend setting island where everything is bigger, better and louder.

With Godfather Steve Angello, a studio partner like AN21 and an arsenal of incredible releases behind him, Max Vangeli is set to make Ibiza his own for 2011 alongside the industry’s unique founding family. Words by Dan Carter Under the watchful eyes of Steve Angello, the ferocious Max Vangeli has leapt from a strengthto-strength with his unique blend of rich and melodic House. Now standing as a made man amongst the industry, 2011 will see the powerful young producer drop his first ever album just in time for the Ibizan summer season. Excited? He certainly is!
Made Man
Whilst the support of an industry maverick as pivotal as Steve Angello may be the material of dreams to millions of aspiring producers, the legendary Swede has ensured that the work of Vangeli and AN21 (Angello’s brother) meets the untouchable standard of his own work with the Swedish House Mafia. “The guy is a work-horse,” Explained Vangeli. “That guy has taught me so many things it is untrue and whilst he doesn’t take any prisoners, you know that you are learning from the best. Steve’s work ethic fascinates me as he does so much and yet the quality of his productions remains golden, be it Pop, House or Hip-Hop.” As a result of this rigorous work alongside Angello, Vangeli and AN21 have spent the entirety of their spare tour time tweaking and testing what is said to be the duos sensational summer masterpiece. With the rumours of guest appearances and exclusive tracks bouncing around every crowd they play to, it appears that the San Fransisco based producer and his Swedish compadre would have to pull out something truly ridiculous to diffuse the hype surrounding their debut full-length. “Obviously, we have been in a very good position to make this record because as a result of the SHM
guys undying support, we have made some great contacts along the way. This record was a real milestone for me and AN21, because we have worked together loads but never to this extent and as a result we have been able to pull-out some big vocal numbers, which we had never done before. The closest we really came before were our remixes, so to be given access to our own artists to work with in the studio was a phenomenal experience.” With the likes of British Rap sensation Example on vocal duties as well as a host of secretive House legends onboard, Vangeli remains grateful for the prosper he and his label mate mate have recieved since their initial singing to Angello’s Size Records. “We owe SHM a lot for taking us under their wing and showing us how to do this properly whilst still allowing us to develop as independent artists,” he said. “It is easy to forget that they were once new kids on the block and so it is reassuring to know they have been where we are years before, but when you look at each members work independetly and the ground SHM have covered over the past few years it is phenomenal to think you are amongst these guys.”
Ibiza and Beyond
Having earned their keep on the road last year alonside SHM, Vangeli appeared at their celebrated ‘Masquerade Motel’ night at Pacha Ibiza for a series of slots throughout the summer season. Performing to a packed out pre-party at Mambo’s followed by a sell-out crowd every night at Pacha, Vangeli experienced the magic of Ibiza’s vibrant nightlife at the deep end of it all. “Ibiza... now THAT was an experience,” explained Vangeli. “I was absolutely overwhelmed by the reaction I got out their, especially given that I was relatively new on the block. amazing to play at. You hear so much talk about the clubs being superior and the crowds being incredible and I am happy to say it was everything I had heard and more. Armed with an arsenal of new tracks from his highly anticipated album, Vangeli will return to the ‘Masquerade Motel’ this year for a fortnightly appearances throughout the summer season, appearing alongside the likes of AN21, Birmingham House producer Kim Fai and ofcourse, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello. Vangeli explained: ”We have purposely timed the album to coincide with Ibiza because lets face it; what better time is there to drop a whle album of new songs? Because it is such an influential island, we want people to be going away remembering our new material and anticipating hearing the album when they get home.” With luck very much on his side, the triumphant producer remains humble for his recent prosper, though self assured that the gold he and AN21 have stumbled upon is totally justified, “I don’t know how to say this, but I feel like I have earned this all,” explained Vangeli. “The fact is that I have worked my ass off to get here and so has AN21, so whilst it is all very overwhelming there isstill a massive sense of achievement and I am ready to take it all to the next level this summer.”
In 2010, the world was introduced to House music’s new and unstoppable force. 2011 is set to be the year that Max Vangeli truly spreads his wings, proving that a little help from the mafia really can go from Miami to Ibiza. No Half Measures... Roger Sanchez returns to the white isle for another season of dynamic House music! The Grammy-nominated global superstar that is Roger Sanchez needs little introduction. Amongst his pioneering studio work and essential imprint Stealth Records, the ‘S-Man’ has become on of House music’s most renowned figures to date, blasting the digital market with track-after-track of ecstatic House anthem.

Being such a vital aspect of global House music, the New York born producer’s infectious sound requires a suitably epic outlet for the blistering heat of the Ibizan summer, and what better place than than Amnesia, where Sanchez has hosted ‘Release Yourself’ for the past 11 years of unique Balaeric clubbing. Reflecting on 11-years of residency on the island, Sanchez could not help but praise the unique atmosphere and vibrant sense of community that has engulfed Ibiza since he first set foor in the early 90’s. ‘There has always been this magic to the place; something mystical and uniquely euphoric and it is hard to describe because upon arrival, you just fall back into it without much thought,” Sanchez explained. “Ibiza feels like home to me because my relationship with the island and the people that keep it ticking has been an absolute rollercoaster ride from day oneOver the past 11-years, Sanchez has pushed his powerful sound and capability behind the decks to the limit, taking avid clubbers on a full-blown musical journey with his vlisering 7-hour sets. Churning out an array of House gems, stone cold classics and exclusive future anthems, Sanchez’s unique sense of showmanship has allowed him to pioneer that hectic Ibizan clubscene.
Sanchez explained: “I think the fact that I don’t do anything in half measures has really helped over the years.” “Seven hours is a long time to play for, but it allows to me to pull out every single stop for these people and as a result i think the corwds feel like they got their moneys worth at the end of the night.” With seven hours of unhindered House music at his mercy, the musical journey ‘Release Yourself’ embarks on is one that scales the legendary island’s unique scene, one that Sanchez has constantly embraced throughout his sets. “As far as Electronic music goes, this is one of the most influential places in the world,”Sanchez explained. “The island dictates what the world will be hearing in clubs across the globe throughout Autum and Winter. It feels great to not only be showing people what they may have missed over the years, but also what is to come.”

There is a lot of buzz across the globe and a lot of excitement surrounding the industry, so as a producer, DJ and label head it is an amazing time to be involved in this incredible music. For this 11th year of ‘Release Yourself’, the ‘S-Man’ promises all the usual thrills of his unique night at Amnesia, as well as a few surprises along the way. “Last year was our 10th anniversary, which was a very exciting year for us and it went off big style. This year will be no exception. I will be bringing some very special guests along with me and a few live performances, as well as a tonne of sexy House music and new tracks from my forthcoming album, which should drop nearer winter!”
