Interest in vintage fashion has gone sky high over the past few months, with kooky characters such as Fearne Cotton and Alexa Chung fastly overtaking the old fashion favorites in
the style stakes, we all want a piece of the action. But what is it that makes vintage fashion so appealing? Spotlight investigates. Have you ever wondered up Brick lane in
London, sunglasses on, bag on the shoulder, eyes peeled to uncover exciting treasures in the wonderful range of vintage and second hand shops? Well if not, you should try it, as it’s quickly becoming the new way to shop. Like all cities across the country, Chester hasn’t escaped this fashion boom. With high streets up and down offering vintage styles, and the vintage look, it seems as though everyone wants a piece of the action. Queens of Vintage, an online fashion magazine dedicated to the vintage lifestyle suggest the most popular styles of vintage clothing for people who are just looking3/

There are 3000 new cases of female cancer diagnosed in the UK every year. With the public struggle Photo courtesy of raceforlife.org
of Jade Goody in 2009, the nation has seemed to be more aware to the dangers of this potentially deadly disease. The HPV vaccine is now freely available to all girls aged between 12 and 15, and from the ages of 25, women are invited to go for a smear diagnostics test every five
years for screening purposes. But there are currently no such preventative methods available for girls aged between 16 and 24, and seeing as
though this disease is increasing, this is a little worrying. Cancer is very well publicised, everyone knows what to look out for and what to do if, god forbid, they find themselves in that terrible situation. Cervical cancer however, isn’t as well documented, and perhaps more young
people should be aware of the signs that could help them to save their lives. Every year, Cancer Research UK holds the annual Race for Life in order to raise money for the scientific battle to cure the disease. In Chester the race is being held on Sunday 13th June 2010 at 9am and Chester Racecourse on New Crane Street. 5000 women, who walk, jog and run 5K race, are aiming to beat the previous total of ÂŁ231,600 to help with this battle and to do what they can to beat cancer. ǸȽ ɬȐ ǸпɄɑȇ Ǹ D018D?51D5N%%%% With the country’s economy in its current state, can we afford to have an ethical conscious when it comes to the clothes we buy? For people who like to keep up with the trends, shops like Primark, whose Chester store is opening next month, offer an affordable solution to looking good, and for some people, sadly the price of freedom doesn’t seem to be too high. Firstly, let’s clarify what it actually means to be ethically sound. Fair-trade goods have reached an all time high, and now include products such as Cadburys chocolate and Kenco coffee; but this hasn’t always been the case. Fair Trading basically means giving the traders, who are
By Kate Marchant
often poor and from under developed countries, a fair price for their goods and a fair trading relationship. A spokesperson from The Fair-trade Foundation said: “Fair-trade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to
pay sustainable prices which must never fall lower than the market price, Fair-trade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.” Thanks have to be given to Primark for 56

q) Help! I’m a size 12 pear shape and I need an outfit for a summer wedding. a) An a- Line, jersey dress, would be perfect for this occasion, and will show off your waist and skim nicely over your hips. A Cap sleeve will be cool enough for the wedding and also modest enough for a church service- add a tailored jacket if it is a very formal occasion. A monochrome dress, with a small pattern is bang on trend, and teamed with bright shoes and bag you will look the belle of the ball!
q) I’m a size 18 and really like to follow the fashion trends. How can I wear fringing? a) Fringing is a tricky trend to get right, go will small accents rather than all over. Try a fringed bag or a waistcoat over a checked shirt. q) How can I look taller and browner on the beach? a) Make everyone envious on the beach with high cut bikini bottoms to give the illusion of lengthy legs. Try a white two piece to make tanned skin appear darker, but avoid white if you are very pale or burn easily as white may make you either look ghostly or emphasise a burnt bod. q) I love wearing red
lipstick, but I’ve noticed my teeth look really yellow when I wear it. Is there anything I can do to stop this?? a) This is a common problem with having luscious red lips. Look out for one with a hint of blue in it, this is help to take out the harsh yellow tinge of the teeth, and will make them look whiter. q) I love summer, but I hate my legs and baring the flesh brings me out in a cold sweat! How can I do boho chic without baring the flesh? a) Fear not, many people dread the summer weather. Try a maxi dress- they really were made for you! Team with gladiators and big sunglasses, and head on down to 5/ the beach!

Soap and Glory, When all you’re looking for is one night tanned:
I love the bottle and name of this product, but as a tanning product, it fails miserably. I looked like I’d been tangoed.
Dove Summer Glow: It smells nice but it seemed to look streaky within a few days. After a couple of uses though I felt shimmery and tanned and was pleased with the result. Use needs to be monitored!!
Rimmel Sun Shimmer:
It goes on really smoothly and looks really even, and lasts all night. It’s a natural shade, but its quite dark on fair skin. It doesn’t last long so buy medium shade, and use less.
AND YOUR WINNER IS... No7 Instant sunshine, smooth-on bronzer:
This is an amazing product, instead of looking fake, it gives a really subtle sheen that gives a healthy natural glow. You can put as much or as little on as you like, and it washes off really 51 easily. I’ll deffo be using this again!!

R-Patz first movie since the twilight saga, Remember Me is a heartfelt teen flick about loss, love and relationships. The first gripping scene leads you through the lives of Tyler and Ally by the hand, until the devastating end. Although engaging at times, the ending is crass and lacks imagination. Despite the eye candy, this film is better forgotten. Not for the mainstream fan, MGMT’s latest effort Congratulations is a spacey journey, with moments of lovely melodies. Definitely a grower, this attempt lacks direction, and is perhaps all too evidently self-indulgent. The record will still be heard by millions, but perhaps the magic from Oracular Spectacular has been lost.
The Other Hand is a gripping novel about
how one hideous event on a beach in Nigeria can bring together two worlds. In a political thriller that tackles the difficult theme of Britain’s treatment of asylum seekers, Chris Cleave creates a beautiful novel that forces the reader to re-evaluate what is important to them. A brilliant read that will stay with you.52

D#E#&(946*(%"#(F2%2G We seem to have come to the stage now where we aren’t that bothered by what work people have had done.
Whereas in the past, plastic surgery, Botox and enhancements was almost something to be ashamed of, people would tell work colleges they were spending a week in Corfu for their friend’s sister’s wedding; or that all of a sudden they had the urge to go visit some aged relative who was dying of some unspecified disease, just to get the time off work and away from the social circle, and would come back looking so refreshed and replenished that everyone thought that the sea air had done them good. Nowadays however, people seem to wear it as a badge of honor; yes I survived 3 grueling weeks of drinking liquidized food through a straw and am now almost an Olympic contender for ventriloquism after having my head mummified, don’t I look five years younger?!
So has our culture become accepting of this kind of self-correcting? And if it has, should it be? In my opinion, how someone feels about themselves is important. Confidence is the key to so many things, from bettering careers, to allowing people to achieve their goals. However small, the ability to rise above any insecurities is a vital part of this process. So is it wrong then that so many people seek to find this little lift from something as artificial, and quite frankly expensive, as plastic surgery? Isn’t it a little sad that we can’t come to terms with who we are as people without this need? Mind you, this, like many others, seems to be an American trend, and of course a massive generalization – of course not everybody’s main aim is to hold onto their youth with both hands. But in all honesty, I think people age much more gracefully without being pumped full of chemicals, and I for one intend to stay away from anything artificial when it
comes to the point where I don’t recognise my aged reflection (I am of course hoping that by then 60 will be the new 40 and I’ll have nothing to worry about anyway). The adverts on TV that have all of a sudden started to appear suggest in the almost supernatural way that adverts subliminally tell you that yes your life isn’t worth living without this amazing oven cleaner, and yes it’s three quid more than the others but my god is it worth it, that in actual fact, having work done is a feasible, affordable for women these days. This just shows I suppose, like so many things, anti-aging and confidence boosting processes have reached a new level, and it is something that just moves with the times. In fifty years or so if you haven’t joined the group, you’ll really stand out in the crowd as the only one with enough crow’s feet to start a bird sanctuary. Maybe I should start saving.
