Sunshine Not Skin Cancer:

The Truth About

Warm weather in England is a rare occurrence, well that’s how it feels for most of the year anyway. The minute we get the first glimpse of sunshine we rejoice and head out in search of a perfect spot to catch some rays. We’re so busy basking in the heat that it is easy to forget to apply suncream or fail to top it up regularly throughout the day. We want some sunshine, we want a tan but what we definitely do not want is skin cancer. However, 2000 people in the UK die each year from skin melanomas and the main cause is now from sunbeds or lying in the heat for too long. Over the past ten years, NHS Direct and Cancer Research have been working together to promote the SunSmart campaign which encourages people to think before they tan. As the campaign has grown, so has the number of skin cancer victims, indicating that people are either not aware or ignoring the message. Dr Gillian How said: “It is such a shame that people are failing to take notice of the vast amount of warnings that

Tanning We should all enjoy the sun without getting hurt. The best way to reduce your chances of contracting skin cancer is by applying a thivk layer of sunscreen, keeping out of direct sun during the hottest hours as well as wearing a hat to protect your head and sunglasses to prevent eye damage. If you use sunbeds, try to reduce the number of times you visit a sunbed shop and make sure you don’t stay on them for any longer than 5 minutes at a time. There are no legal recourse if a young person uses sunbeds but if you are aware of a tanning salon which allows children to use their equipment then you can report the business to your local authority. So this summer, make sure you soak up the sun without risking skin cancer. More information about looking after yourself in the heat and the skin cancer awareness campaign is available at www.sunsmart. org Enjoy the warm weather and stay safe.

COVET FITNESS

5 Minutes With... Richard Taylor Richard Taylor is the Managing Director of Personal Training Team, ‘Get Fit Company’. He has received much acclaim in the North West of England and is currently expanding his business to cover a much wider area. Covet Magazine: Tell us how you got into personal training? Richard Taylor: Well like most boys, I got really into weights when I was a teenager as a way to tone up and attract the girls! CM: Did it work?! RT: Unfortunately not, they realised I spent more time with my weights than socialising so assumed I wasn't interested. CM: Exactly how much time did you spend working out? RT: I spent around a couple of hours every night in my bedroom lifting weights in front of the mirror, hoping to notice an instant difference in my shape. CM: How long did the weight lifting bug last? RT: It never stopped! I've still got it now, I just toned it down a bit. I got to a level where I was good enough to compete but I thought it may take the fun out of it. CM: Please tell us we don't need to be weight lifters to have a personal trainer! RT: Of course not. At Get Fit Company most of our clients had never even stepped into a gym before they came to us. In fact, most of them still probably haven't

because we come direct to them. CM: To their house? RT: Their house or office, whatever is easiest for them. I specialise in training busy mums so I make sure that their workout time is as convenient as possible. CM: What about all the equipment there is in a gym, surely you need at least some of it to work out? RT: Actually, you don't! The only piece of equipment I take with me is a step so that we can incorporate some step aerobics movements into the exercise programme. CM: If there's no expensive equipment why are personal trainers so pricey? RT: Personal trainers are expensive in comparrison with a gym membership but you get far more for your money. CM: Such as? RT: Well not only do we create a tailored exercise regime for each individual, we also provide a specific diet plan and offer motivational support. CM: What results can be achieved through working with a personal trainer? RT: I always say to clients during

our fist session that it is realistic to lose 2lb a week minimum. This means it is possible for a dress size to be dropped in just under five weeks. CM: Drop a dress size in five weeks, where do we sign?! RT: (Laughs) Well once someone has made the first contact with us, whether it be through social media or a direct call, we will arrange a first ‘practice’ session that will be given at half price. If they want to sign up for more sessions then they can. CM: What’s the most positive aspect of being a personal trainer? RT: Making an impact on someone’s life and watching as the positive changes you make together lead to great results. CM: How inspiring, is this what you plan do for the rest of your life then? RT: I won’t stop until I’ve helped as many people as possible reach their full potential. Everyone can reach their goals. CM:On behalf of our readers, thank you for sharing your time with us. RT: You’re welcome, I’m delighted to be part of your launch issue.
