A Word from The Editor
Hello there!
This magazine has been started to give an insight into what is going on in and around the Lakes and Cumbria. It has been written for both locals and tourist visiting this beautiful part of the country and hopes to inform you of all the big events in the area. It is great news to see that Barrow AFC have reached the FA Trophy final for the first time in 20 years. I am somewhat of an avid follower of the Bluebirds and have spent many a wet Saturday afternoon in the open roofed north end, cheering on a drab nil nil! I have my ticket for final and look forward to the 7 hour trip to the big smoke to see Barrow give Stevenage a good thrashing.
The FA Trophy final gives me a good excuse to miss the Keswick to Barrow, a feat that I’m positive I could not complete; I have great respect for anyone who is going to take part. My lifestyle of lager, bacon and no exercise has left me with struggling for breath on the way to the shops, nevermind after 40 miles. The K2B raise a lot of money for charities and the community and I encourage you to show your support for anyone you know walking and maybe give a couple of quid. CUMBRIA FLOODS: 6 MONTHS ON
After the freak events of Novermber 2009, how have the people of Cumbria dealt with the damage done to their homes and Businesses

In November of last year, Cumbria was hit with its worst rainfall for almost 4 decades. The raging waters ruined 100’s of homes and many businesses in the area. Paul Dixon, was one of those affected. He had recently bought a home in Ulverston and it was his first winter in the house. “In the beginning it wasn’t affecting Ulverston. There were shocking images of Cockermouth and Appleby with the water flowing through the streets, but we didn’t expect it to get this bad here. It just kept raining and raining and pretty soon the levels started to rise.” The damage ruined most of the ground floor, all the carpets were wrecked and the kitchen completely warped. A couple down the road have a elderly relative living with them, you could tell that the stress was having an effect on her, but she is looking better now.”
As well as residents, businesses were hugely affected by the flooding. Craig West is the owner of the Whitewater Hotel in Newby Bridge, an area that was hit hard by the flooding. “Our ground floor and basement was ruined, it caused thousand of pounds worth of damage and caused us to close for over a month, which lost us a lot of revenue, simply because we were not in business. Luckly winter is a slow season for us, but it was still a large set back.” We have been able to reopen our door quickly and we are back in business. The floods on that level are a rarity and happen maybe one or twice in a generation. “
Currently I’m back renovating, most of the damp has gone and it’s starting to look presentable again.”

BLUEBIRDS FLYING HIGH ON THE ROAD TO WEMBLEY By Neil Sanders On the 8th of May, it will have been almost 20 years since Barrow AFC last graced the hallowed turf of Wembley Stadium. It will also be the day that they make their long awaited return. The upcoming trip to the home of English football could be the perfect way to cap off what can only be described as a turbulent season, with highs and lows that have ranged from the sublime to the downright ridiculous.

It’s frustrating when you look at the performance of the club in these games and then look at our form in the league. “For many of the lads, this will probably be their only chance in their careers to play at Wembley.”

8th May Sean Lock – Lockipedia. Forum 28 Barrow The Star of BBC 2’s “QI” and captain on Channel 4’s “8 out of 10 Cats” is performing at the Forum 28. The funny man looks at the modern world full of mis-information and half truths to come to some hilarious conclusions. The Daily Telegraphy says “ there’s barely a line that misfires, 5 stars”
9th May Jason Manford - Brewery Arts Centre The Star of “8 out of 10 Cats” and “Live At the Apollo”. Manford brings his fresh take on observational comedy to Kendal. With his sharp wit and undeniable charm, it’s no suprise that he’s starting to join the big boys of comedy playing to larger and larger crowds.
27h May Shining City - Keswick Lake Theatre A chilling ghost story set in the office of a dublin therapist. In this gripping and absorbing psychological drama, McPherson, the multi-award winning author of The Weir, explores what it means to lose faith in God, in relationships and in one’s self.
29th Bill Bailey - Brewery Arts Centre The Comedy music and surealist style of Bill Bailey has made him one of the top comedians in the country. With countless successful tours under his belt and a headlining show at Wembley Arena, this is one comedy performance you will not want to miss.

Keswick 2 Barrow 2010: Preview
The Keswick to Barrow walk has become an eagerly anticipated tradition since the first walk in 1967. Since then it has run every year and raises money for a multitude of local, National and International charities. The walk consists of a 40 mile trek through the beautiful countryside of the Lake District and passes through several of Cumbria’s towns and villages. The origins of the walk began in the 1960’s and feature around the Shipyards of Barrow in-Furness, where HMS Resolution (the First Polaris Submarine) was being built. During the build, experts from America were brought in to The walk takes you to many towns and lakes including Windermere oversee production of the vessel. The walk was conceived over a statement that former US President John F Kenny made claiming that “Every American should be able to walk 50 miles a day”. Plans were soon underway to plan a walk to build relationships with the workers of the shipyard and the crew of the Submarine. The initiative was taken by the Installation Manager (Submarines) to formally challenge the Commanding Officer of HMS Resolution to form a team and walk from Keswick to Barrow (approx 50 miles) on 1st April 1967. Since then the walk has been shortened by 10 miles and now starts south of Keswick at Rough How Bridge. Last year’s winner was Harry Stainton, who ran it in the impressive time of 4:56:08, said: “I’ve been doing long distance running for over 7 years now. 40 miles is a huge distance and it takes a lot of preparation. I spend quite a lot of time training on the fells and mountains to build up the stamina. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can finish the distance, it is a huge achievement.”
Harry works at BAE shipyard in Barrow and ran to raise money for the Macmillian Nurses. “The event is organised really well and always gets a large turnout. It is good to see so many people willing to undertake such huge task to raise money for charity.” This year’s walk has had a bit of bad luck as it is on the same day as Barrow AFC play in the FA Trophy Final, which has caused people to speculate as to whether the usual crowds will turn up to participate. Neil Tyson is on the committee that organises the walk each year. He believes that the two events will not affect one another: “Since Barrow qualified for the final we have still had a lot of people signing up for the walk and very few have dropped out. People from all over Cumbria and the North West come to do the event, not just Barrow AFC fans!” There is still time to sign up for the Keswick to Barrow walk, simply go to the website www. keswick2barrow.co.uk for enquires.

Kendal Calling Announce Acts
British Sea Power at last year’s Kendal Calling are splitting up and are adamant that this is not a “farewell tour”. Kendal Calling has announced its headline acts for this summer’s festival. Friday will see Calvin Harris take to the main stage. The British number one selling artist will grace Lowther Park with his popular style of electro-pop and nu-dance music. Saturday boosts Indy folk rock act The Coral. The five piece from Liverpool have had hits with “In the Morning” and “Pass it on” and had a number one selling album “Magic and Medicine”.

Last year we had The Streets which was an amazing booking. But if you look at this year’s line-up we have loads of big acts and it will make this year’s atmosphere amazing!” Since the first festival in 2006, Kendal Calling has been getting bigger and bigger. So big in fact that it has had to move 20 miles north of Kendal, to Lowther Park, the nearest suitable venue to meet demand for the amount of tickets sold. Other acts due to appear at Kendal Calling 2010 include: British Sea Power, Badly Drawn Boy, The Futureheads, Ok Go, Stereo MC’s and The King Blues. How Long have you been sailing the Gondola?
“I would have to say the water speed record attempts by Donald Campbell on the lake. The man is a true British legend and is still the only person to break the land speed and water speed record in the same year. His final record attempt on Coniston which resulted in his death was a real tragedy. There is currently a project to rebuild the Bluebird K7 which is due to finish sometime in 2011, that will be a great tribute to the man. “
“I’ve been sailing on the gondola for just under 3 years. I began when I was 20 and I am currently the youngest of the pilots. It is something I really enjoy doing and is a great part time job in the summer months while I train to be an electrician.” Can you tell us a little bit about the History of the Gondola? “The boat was commissioned by Sir James Ramsden, who was a director for the Furness railway company. The original Gondola sailed from 1959 to 1936 until it was retired as a house boat on the lake. Then in the 60’s there was an appeal to raise money to renovate back to its former glory, but unfortunately the hull was damaged beyond repair. So the money
