BEAU

In this issue...

Summer is here at long last and we’re as happy as you are! As a new season opens up, we leave the last trace of chilly weather behind and head back outdoors into a world of re-born colour. And this summer is brighter than ever – thanks in no small part to fashion. Shockingly strong colours are back on the spring/summer catwalks and an abundance of acid pattern clashing means you’ll never have a dull day this season so bang on trend and bright is definitely our mantra for summer. Camel colours, floppy hats, espadrilles and retro seventies shades have hit the high streets and with the hippy trend back, there’s just enough time to add some seventies flare to your festival wardrobe. For me a summer without festivals is like winter without Christmas – in other words, entirely unthinkable. Either hot and crowded or sodden and mud-soaked, the U.K . is famous for its music festivals and last year over two million people hoisted their backpacks, climbed into range rovers and headed for the fields, and if 2010 is anything to go by then 2011 will be the best year ever for outdoor live music. Clearly though festivals have undergone a startling transformation over the years, each year becoming less about the music and mud and more about looking good. Don’t get me wrong as a fashion editor I’m all about being on-trend, however I firmly believe the true festival fashion is to dump Dior and get down and dirty. As any dedicated festival goer knows, practicality is key. Don’t make the same mistake as a girl I saw at Glastonbury last year who was clutching a Miu Miu bag and attempting to battle the two mile walk through mud to the main stage in a pair of six-inch heels. Take it from me it might have looked classic on the catwalk but was definitely an epic festival fail. Yesterday I received an e-mail from Camp Bestival offering a cabana for ten people with waitress service at an extortionate rate. Although this does sound like a tempting offer (a nicely seated toilet in trade for the pit), for me it lacks a certain appeal. Festivals should be all about the down and dirty, pitching up with friends and enjoying the atmosphere. Wind, rain or shine. So, if you don’t know how to pull off the impeccably chic seventies style this season, or you’re unsure on the fashion for this year’s festivals then you’ve come to the right place. So grab a cuppa, sit down and BEau inspired.

CUTTING EDGE COLOUR After years of pastels, florals and typically banal beachwear, summer has a new best friend; brights! Right now neon is back and you can get away with shockingly strong colours – think highlighter hues. Zesty orange shades, fluorescent pinks and blues and vibrant grass greens have reigned supreme on the spring/ summer catwalks and an abundance of acid pattern clashing means you’ll never have a dull day this season. If you want to play it safe but still take part in the fun, pick items with neon borders, wear different nuances of the same colours or even accessorise with a pair of cutting edge coloured shades. Sheers haven’t made a comeback this season, because they never really went away. They’ve been hiding in the most obscure places, but they’ve come out to play for summer.

Flares Frills & FLARE PLAY

Fashion has gone back to the groove school of the 70’s with the huge comeback of the highwaisted flared trousers – just in time to add some Seventies flare to your festival wardrobe. They were good enough for our parents. OK , so we have all had a giggle at our parent’s photos but secretly you think they looked pretty damn cool. The Seventies was the cooest decade for fashion, no arguments on this one. Quite simply the decade redefined fashion and the flares were at the forefront of the revolution and they’re back this season with a vengeance. Forget the usual picture of this ’70s classic, more fancy dress than high fashion, more retro denim than demure, because this season the flare is getting a classy makeover. While Woodstock goers would have teamed them with love beads and tie-dye shirts, the look these days is rather more hip than hippie. Today, we know that simple tanks, shirts and tee’s are the order of the day, letting the trouser make the statement. The trick to pulling the look off with dignity and grace is to wear one 70’s trend at a time, think 70’s on the bottom and 2011 on top! You don’t need to go extreme to be on trend - a tiny suggestion of a flare or a wide leg means you can commit to the trend without breaking the bank or looking like a timewarped fashion victim. Who doesn’t love a trouser that elongates the leg, creates a 8 * May 2011

slimming silhouette and nips in your waist? Time to herald the return of the flare trouser and prove that working the hippy trend in the noughties can be totally spot on! Be wary of overdoing it: Flares + peasant blouse + floppy hat may work on the catwalk, but will probably translate into fancy dress in real life. As always with fashion, keep it simple and just add a touch of... flair? (I couldn’t resist!)

FRILL SEEKERS

The fresh breezes of summer have brought with them a vogue for feminine styles. As part of this trend, clothes embellished with ruffles, frills and flounce have become popular and are top of the list of favourite fashion trends this season. One of summer’s prettiest trends, romantic ruffles are a hit with the A-list on and off the red carpet. From full on glamour in cocktail dresses to a girlie injection of fun on a simple shirt or pair of shoes, everyone’s wearing ruffles and frills. It seems the namby-pambiness of frills is out so don’t be afraid to ruffle a few feathers this summer with some daring style choices. Oh, go on, you might just enjoy the frill of it all. A fun and flirty style, ruffles are feminine with a vintage edge and will be a popular look, they can easily transform the look of a simple garment and take it from minimalist to highfashion. To spot one of the hottest styles of the season, just look to the feet. There are so many

BEAUFeature

Espadrilles shoes adorned with layers upon layers of ruffles and flowers. You will see the frills on ballet flats to sandals to the highest of heels and these ruffles and flowers add the needed punch to any outfit without being over the top. Flamenco frills add a touch of Spanish heat this summer to many high street items, from sexy summer dresses, to bags, shoes and accessories and can be seen perfectly placed on bikinis to create the perfect cover-up for those unwanted lumps and bumps. Be wary of overdoing it: Go for understated frills and leave the oversized frills to the catwalk models and red-carpet crowd or you may be in danger of looking more fancy dress than summer chic. Feminine flounces add the finishing touches this season – and from playful swimsuits to cocktail frocks, the high street has something for every frillseeker this summer!

TO JUTE OR NOT TO JUTE

Step into summer with espadrille wedges. The sun is shining, finally, and it’s got us in the mood to start shopping for summer. If there’s one thing you need in your summer wardrobe, it’s this season’s hottest footwear; the espadrille wedges. They’ve been spotted on celebs everywhere, so trust me; you do not want to be seen without them! The espadrille wedge style strutted down the spring summer fashion catwalks

in an array of colours and fabrics. They are a great way to add extra height without compromising on comfort; and with their on trend summer fashion espadrilles heel, you’ll be the envy of all your friends! Espadrilles are a great take on wedges and make them such an appropriate shoe for the summer months! Extremely comfortable and with soft cushioning, these popular styles in wedges are so adorable and will look stylish with any of your favourite warm weather outfits, and will take you from day to night in one stylish step. With espadrilles & wedges, you score those few extra inches that a typical heel would provide you with and you receive additional stability and comfort. Espadrilles this season can be found in many colors across the board, from romantic neutrals to funky neon that can all lend themselves to dressing for work, weekend, night out and a summer holiday as they work for both day and night. The common element exhibits accents such as floral frills, dainty straps and girly bows which gives a girly touch to a chunky wedge, making them a perfect pair of shoes for even a frilly summer dress. Head to your nearest Primark store where you can grab a pair for a mere £12, or, if you want to splurge, Office have many gorgeous pairs for only £65; either way, we guarantee your feet will look fab! FESTIVAL FANATIC SARAH TOMKOW SPILLS ALL ABOUT HER LOVE FOR MUSIC, FIELD FASHION & CAMPING ESSENTIALS

What was your first festival? The first festival for me was Leeds in 2007 and it always remains one of the best as I was overwhelmed for the whole weekend. The atmosphere and line up were incredible, and I go back every year without fail. What festivals have you been to? Leeds x4, Benicassim x 2, Isle of Wight and Latitude. This year im going to be adding glastonbury to the list! Which is your favourite festival? Leeds is a classic as its so close to home and the line up is always brilliant, there’s always a good crowd of true festival goers too, i.e people who will stick it out, even in the rain! But Benicassim has the draw of having guaranteed good weather forecast and the beach to perfect your tan before heading out! Do you feel festivals have changed over the years? The atmosphere is still as electric as my first festival experience in 2007. However each year more and more people are going who are less interested with the music and more interested in doing their hair and makeup, not really what a festival is about in my opinion. Do you follow a fashion at festivals? No fashion in particular, practicality is the most important thing! Denim shorts and wellies are a must, and no white. Although festival fashion is great, the people who look best are the ones that dont try too hard, think baggy vest tops and hot pants with knee socks. 10 * May 2011

What have you bought ready for this year’s festivals? I’ve already bought 3 playsuits and a couple of hoodies for at night, layering up to keep warm is important! I get a new pair of sunnies each year, this year’s are a round 70s pair. What outfits do you plan on wearing at this year’s festivals? I’m going to be wearing playsuits, theyre good festival wear as you dont have to think about matching and theres no chance of your skirt blowing up! However they do make going to the toilet a bit tricky....! Magazines are always advertising maxi skirts as festival wear, I love them for summer but at a festival I honestly couldn’t imagine anything more impractical!!! What do you recommend girls should take to a festival? You can’t forget a bumper packet of baby wipes! You end up using them for everything, make up removal, glass cleaning, wellie cleaning! I love cotton buds too, for touching up your make-up in the middle of the days events and of course dry shampoo to avoid having greasy locks. Are there any safety tips for those who are going to a festival for the first time? Safety is a difficult one, but mostly just make sure you have a bag with a good zip and dont take an expensive phone or camera that could be ruined by rain or drink spillages! I always take a disposable just to be safe, I love the excitement of going

And finally, what’s your don’ts of a festival? Definetely not to take anything worth any value, buy a cheap pair of shades and leave expensive jewellery, phones and cameras at home because it can ruin your weekend if anything happens to valuables. Don’t wear anyhting floaty or too long as it’ll be harder to walk through the mud! the best advice i can give is to keep it simple and think practical!

SARAH SAYS...

TAKE...GROOMING PRODUCTS

Baby wipes, toilet roll, antibacterial hand soap, toothbrush, a towel and cotton buds to get last night’s mascara from under your eyes.

TAKE...DRY SHAMPOO To refresh locks.

TAKE...PONCHO Keeps

you warm in the wind and dry in the wet, even though it’s Summer, this is England!

TAKE...LOTS OF SOCKS

They’ll get wet or filthy and it’s awful having to put the same pair on again in the morning. TAKE...HUNTERS I never go to a festival without taking my Hunters, they’ve seen me through some messy festivals. TAKE...SATCHELMust be big enough to take all your valuables and must have a zip to keep everyhting safe. TAKE...SHADES Don’t take designer ones - a pair of cheap aviators will look just as good and it won’t matter if you lose them! TAKE...BIN BAGS To throw away rubbish to keep your tent clean, and to pack away wet or dirty clothes.

TAKE...EMPTY WATER BOTTLES Use the

refill points to top up. It’s important to stay hydrated, and this is the cheapest option. TAKE...SUN CREAM Even if the sun isn’t out I always wear sun block as I catch the sun really easily. TAKE...TORCH So you can find things in the dark!

BEAUHealth

Shape up for Summer The Dreaded C Word: Cellulite

Did you know that more than 80% of us have cellulite? It’s caused by a collection of fat that pushes into the skin’s upper layer giving a dimpled look. Getting rid of cellulite can be tricky, but follow these 6 tips and you’ll see a reduction in that orange peel skin in time for summer! Lecithin Eat foods that contain lecithin daily as they restore the strength of dermal cells. Eggs, apples, soy, spinach, and cauliflower are all Lecithin rich foods, so they’re great for getting rid of cellulite.

Say no to takeaways Eating fatty takeaways and processed foods can cause cellulite because they lead to fat deposits in our bodies. So why not try making your favourite fast food at home to reduce the saturated fat?

Protein Protein stimulates and strengthens the production of collagen and elastin which keeps cellulite at bay. Eat lean meats, turkey, nuts, lettuce skimmed milk and pulses.

Fibre High in fibre and water content, some fruit and veg is better than others. Try celery, plums, grapefruit, peaches and oranges which are low in natural sugar and high in fibre and steer clear of bananas.

Cardio exercise Cardio exercise is proven to help you get rid of cellulite, whatever your size. Use exercises that target the buttocks, hips and thigh areas. Walking, cycling, running and aerobic classes are great for this.

2 4 6 1 3 5

Water Prevention is better than cure; water keeps the skin hydrated and flushes out toxins. However, don’t drink too much water as this could lead to swelling underneath the cellulite - 1.5 litres a day is plenty.

a s k Nikki His family don’t like me

P

L E H

They won’t want me to travel

My fiancé of three years and I are planning our wedding, but his family are a problem. They tell him he can do better, and always leave me out – even of his birthday celebration. I can’t ask not to have them at the wedding, but I don’t want the day ruined. How can I make it work? Is there one warm family member who might be able to help with wedding plans, thus installing a bridge to the others? At the reception, make sure his folks are seated within talking distance of your guests, who will have great things to say about you. You husband’s longterm happiness can prove to them the value of your love. Keep the door open. Never force him into the agonising position of choosing between you and them. If they remain too narrow-minded to accept you, it really will be their loss.

I’m thinking about going travelling for a year. But I’m from quite a traditional family - my parents will think I’m being irresponsible and try to convince me to go to uni instead. It’s important that you articulate for yourself why you’re not ready to go to university. Think about it in terms of not only how prepared or motivated you feel but also in terms of what you plan to do instead, and why that’s preferable. Once you’re clear about this, sit down and discuss it calmly wit your parents. tell them it’s something you’ve thought about deeply, and explain your decision. They’re likely to worry that you’ve given up on the idea of going to universityaltogether, so if that’s not the case reassure them. It’s also important to remember that you’re now an adult, and although it’s scary, you’re now free to make your own decisions and work out what it is that will make you happy. And, who knows, traditional or not, your family may be more understanding than you think. 14 * May 2011

I fancy a married dad

I’m single and in my early twenties, and recently met a guy on a night out. We flirted and kissed, and then I found out he’s a married dad. But we’ve started texting and phoning every day, and it’s got very steamy. I know his marriage is troubled. What should I do? When a married dad flirts with a stranger and follows up with sexy texts, you bet his marriage is troubled – by him. Tell him to solve his marital problems first before he involves you in them. And until he’s free and clear, no more calls or sexy texts – they only feed your wishful thinking and cloud your judgement.

I hate his job and friend!

My boyfriend has a friend I don’t like at all – he’s always making sarcastic jokes about my boyfriend and me. Also, they’re partners in an agency for sexy models, and I worry that’ll ruin our relationship. What should I do? Your jealousy of sexy models is a separate issue. If your husband hasn’t acted out of line, it could reflect your own insecurity. Get sexy at home, remind him (and yourself ) how well suited you are. As for his friend, habitual sarcasm is a defence – he’s hiding behind it. Don’t let him get you down. Greet his remarks with a knowing smile. But show understanding too, so he can trust you in time.

(May 22 – June 22) May is going to move your career into the big time. The quirkier the project you’re offered, the more likely it is to come off beautifully. The 5th could bring surprises around money and the 10th brings major news, which shores up your career for good. ( June 23 – July 23) Just when you thought relationships couldn’t get more intense, yours does just that. But the good news is, you’re about to get a break – the new moon that falls on the 20th injects some spice into your life and makes everything feel better. ( July 24 - August 23) Mars, bringer of anger, energy and passion, is now going backwards in your sign. This means that something previously felt all fired up about is now requiring a lot of work and possibly a lot of doubt but don’t panic as the end of May will bring clarity. (August 24 – September 23) Your love life should already be picking up in April but come May it’s like the sun coming out. By the 19th you could be dating someone new and by the 28th be deeply involved with them and it could be someone you least expected.

(September 24 – October 23) After the 8th close partnerships are under scrutiny as you’re forced to see another’s point of view. If you’ve been feeling frustrated, this improves midmonth – although there needs to be plenty of talking to understand why things have gone the way they have. (October 24 – November 22) If you can get over your frustrations with the workplace early in the month, you could enjoy a huge amount of fun and love at home. For some of you this means a flatmate turns into a lover or boyfriend moves in. (November 23 – December 22) So you’re finally free of a situation that was getting you down and you’re entering a new, positive era, maybe a new domestic one as you ponder buying a house or moving. On the 17th, you get a genius idea of how to accomplish this. (December 23 – January 19) Many of you have a new boss driving you, quite frankly, nuts. Power struggles are very likely, so tread carefully and think carefully about your next step before you walk out! For those of you who’ve already resigned, it’s a good month for job hunting.

( January 20 – February 19) Single Aquarians who vowed never to fall in love again can breathe a sigh of relief as, midmonth, hot times make a longoverdue comeback. If you’re attached, all that bickering will stop. Making the effort to find a resolution really pays off on the 7th. (February 20 – March 20) The 16th is your lucky day. If there’s something – or someone – you want, this is the time to after it and see major results. There is such a thing as creating your own luck, and you are definitely the mistress of your own fate right now. (March 21 – April 20) If a love affair started all hot ‘n’ heavy, someone’s now having doubts – possibly you. It’s a month for back-tracking on some project, decision or person, but this needn’t be a bad thing. Decide sooner rather than later.
