MG Trophy Championship
April saw the return of the muchanticipated MG Trophy Championship that again held its first race at Brands Hatch. Reigning champion Paul Streather returned to defend his title and having raced last season in a ZR160 (Class C) he has now moved up into a ZR190 (Class B). Streather will now be driving alongside the 2009 champion Chris Bray who was out for revenge, wanting his title back and Paul Luti who was determined to go one better than his second place championship finish last year and clinched that all important trophy. With several new entries this year in all four of the different class’s this seasons driving looks set to be the closest and most exciting yet. B ra nd s Ha t c h
It was here, at Brands Hatch last year that Graham Ross lost control of his car at Graham Hill Bend and Simon Byrne who was unable to avoid him T-Boned Ross’s car. David Williams, Julia Penfold and Alastair Rushforth also got caught up in

the aftermath of the incident but luckily no one was injured. The safety car was deployed and after two laps behind the safety car the race was eventually red flagged. The race was declared null and void with no race results being given. The second, and only race, got underway later on in the day but due to more incidents was delayed and reduced to being only ten minutes long. This year the racing went more or less smoothly and both of the races offering fantastic viewing for the spectators and the drivers got to showcase their talents. The first race saw not only a display off nicely presented cars but also some impressive driving throughout the grid. The second race was also delayed and reduced similarly to last year but this time to fifteen minutes and despite being shortened there was still enough time for everything to change. Brands Hatch has given us a glimpse of what could be in stall for the rest of the season, exciting, fast and furious. Who knows what will happen at Oulton Park.

Qualif y ing
(The drivers fastest qualifying time determines their grid position for the first race and their second fastest lap time determines for the second) Reigning champion Paul Streather was quick to silence (all doubts) and despite having moved up to class A/B the 21-yearolds impressive qualifying times saw him position his car on the front row for both races despite their being rumours of a leaking Cam Seal. The 2009 champion Chris Bray was determined to get his season off to a good start and put in some very quick lap times which saw him in pole position for both races. Third place went to the ‘Flying Scotsman’ Paul Luti with Doug Cole in fourth. Fifth and six places went to Ben Jaques and Gary Wetton, with Robin Walker in seventh. Newcomer Tom Fitzsimmons qualified seventeenth but was weary throughout qualifying after and accident during testing the day before that saw him hit the wall at the exit of The Druids.
Colin Robertson and Graham Ross were unable to make the meeting at Brands Hatch but are hoping to attend Oulton Park. Poling Class C/D was new entry Andy Campbell having moved to this Championship from the MG Owners Club. Oliver Barnard was second and after missing out on a class win last year when he was piped to the post by a hundredth of a second by Paul Streather was looing to go one step better. Ross Makar took third place followed by Julia Penfold in fourth, Paul Savage fifth and David Williams in sixth. R ac e O n e The first race of the season got off to a flying start thanks to some very impressing driving throughout. It was a fantastic and exciting race that had spectators on the edge of their seats from start to finish. In pole position was Chris Bray who got off to a flying start while second on the grid Paul Streather struggled off the line and was on the outside of Paddock Hill bend which saw him forced all the way back into sixth place. Meanwhile further down the grid, newcomer Andy Campbell who had managed to put his car on pole for Class C/D had to resign from the race on lap two with a broken drive shaft. Meaning that Oliver Barnard was leading the Class with Ross Makar second and Paul Savage who had managed to over take Julia Penfold in third after a terrific start. Mike Koskela was also forced to retire on lap 3 with a dropped valve. All the excitement of the race however was at the front with Paul Streather determined not to go down without a fight and had managed to move up to fifth place by the end of the second lap. Streather then put in some very quick lap times but was held stationary behind Ben Jacques until lap six where he over-took him at Clearways and it was here that Streather also over took Doug Cole on lap 13, and Luti on lap 16 meaning he was now in second. Streather tried to pass Bray but with Luti right behind him he had to defend making sure that any attacking moves he made on

Bray would not leave him vulnerable to attacks. As the race drew to an end there was just not enough time for Streather to ever really challenge Bray so the reigning champion had to settle for second which was quite impressive following his disastrous start of the race a mere twenty minutes earlier. Bray took first place with Streather just 0.182s behind. Despite clutch problems Luti managed to hold onto third place with Cole

R ac e T w o The second race of the day was delayed thanks to an oil spill on the track from a previous race. This delay meant that the race was shortened to fifteen minutes instead of the usual twenty. The grid positions remained the same as the previous race but with both David Koskela and Mike Koskela out of the race this meant that several cars gained grid positions. Andy Campbell’s car was repaired and ready to race thanks to the help and support of others. This time everyone was quick of the line but the fastest by far was Ben Jacques who had gained three grid places and was up into second place. At the end of the first lap Chris Bray was hanging on to his lead with Jacques second, Paul Streather third, Doug Cole fourth and Paul Luti fifth. Position

On lap two a daring move at Brabham Straight by Streather saw him shoot up the inside of Jacques who was on his left and Cole on his right. Jacques dropped further down the grid and eventually retired from the race on lap eight with a punctured radiator, which he had picked up from his daring start after tapping another car. An error by Cole on lap eleven saw him on the grass at Hailwood Hill letting Gary Wetton and Robin Walker through. Streather was hot on Brays heels and as the two cars encountered back markers Streather was able to gain even more on Bray. As the cars drove down the straight for the start of lap fifteen they were neck and neck but it was Streather who managed to edge his way into the lead at Paddock Hill bend. In class C/D Andy Campbell who had made an excellent start that had even seen him in front of two of the 190’s managed to hold on to his lead that saw him clinch first place. From the Co-Ordinater By Tanya Moore
After last year’s disaster Pete Macwaters was hoping that everything would run a lot smoother this year. His hopes came true with not one, but two of the most spectacular races the Trophy had seen. Despite the dramatic racing Pete was still hoping for more race entries and said: “Except for the low grid it was the best start to the season I could have hoped for.” Pete believes that the first race was the best and said: Paul [Streather] had to battle through the field after his poor start, to go from 6th place to almost winning the race was very exciting and it had the spectators on the edge of their seats. The second race was believed to be just as exciting though with several battles going on throughout the field, however Paul Streather and Chris Bray’s duel at the front was fascinating and the quality of the driving was excellent by all involved. Despite the second race being delayed due to an oil leak from a previous race that had to be dealt with the race did not appear to suffer and despite being reduced in length was definitely worth the wait. The main concern for Oulton Park is as always the number of entries for the racing, as the point scoring system varies depending on the amount of race starters and this can then alter the outcome of the results. With testing the day before the race there is also the chance that anything can happen, such as Tom Fitzsimmons’ accident. But with Pete hoping to have different sponsors for each of the rounds this can often be distracting as he has to give them a lot of attention which means that he has to do a lot of extra running around. This sponsorship was something that Pete has been keen to include for a few years now but due to the general financial situation there was not really anybody who was interested. As well as the fact that many of the MG dealers were not interested because they did not have any new cars to promote. This has however all changed thanks to
M G T
C
the production of the new MG6 that many dealers are hoping to promote throughout the racing season. Spectators at Oulton Park will get the chance to see the new car on show and which will help with promotion. Pete hopes that eventually a MG6 car will be available to use as a course car but at the moment that is looking very unlikely. These sponsors throughout the year means that money will be available in the Trophy account which gives more security to the drivers and helps to cover costs. As the sponsors will be local to that weekends circuit this means that local drivers can forge links with the dealers in their area and may if they wish seek individual sponsorship which will help benefit them considerably. Again a reverse grid at Silverstone later on this year means that the second race of the weekend promises plenty of excitement. Oulton Park will also see the return of Colin Robertson and Graham Ross who could not make the long journey from Scotland down to Brands Hatch. Both of these class B drivers will be doing their best to make up for their lost points and will help make the racing even more exciting as they battle for that all important trophy. As for who he thinks will win at Oulton Park

After a brief conversation with Guy Jones it has been revealed that there are future plans for MG, following the recent release of the MG6 that has recieved great praise. After working closely with the Chinese manufacturer company, the UK is hoping together they can both promote future MG models. Jones said: “I am delighted to confirm that MG will launch a second new model in

The sports saloon will be available in the second half of the year in time for the September market.” This could mean great things for the MG market and can help publicise not only the Championship but also all of those involved.

Exclusive Congratulations on your weekend at Brands Hatch, how do you feel the weekend went? I was disappointed that I didn’t qualify higher up the grid; although I was pleased that I was doing 57 second lap times, though a few others were faster! The first race I had a poor start and lost a place and it took me most of the race to get the place back, but I did get there and finally finished third in class and also got the fastest lap. That was the first time for me. Unfortunately that record only lasted until the second race where Oliver went even faster. In the second race I had a much better start but didn’t defend my position well enough and lost the place I gained. Later I came off the circuit and lost yet another place I did eventually get that back but finished fourth in class. Overall I was quite pleased with the weekend and my times, I just wish others weren’t going so much faster as well!

about car control and can see that there is enough for me to learn until I am too old to race any more! The people are good fun and it is a great antidote to my day job working in the City of London. Have you always been interested in cars? Yes, although not sure why, it definitely does not run in the family. How did you become interested in cars? I always wanted a ‘sporty car’ that looked good. Think I was more interested in the looks rather than the performance to be honest. I started going to watch the historic racing at the Goodwood revival and decided that is what I wanted to do. About 5 years ago the organisers of track days at Goodwood persuaded me to do track days and I bought an MX5 off e-bay (which I still have). They were great at Goodwood; you got as much tuition as you wanted with very few cars on track. Eventually they suggested I took my race licence. I did that at Goodwood as well. Only problem was that I had never driven on any other circuit! I am not sure that I would ever have started doing normal track days on my own. There are not many women (often none) and I felt very intimidated when I did my first ‘non Goodwood’ day at Rockingham.
I just wish others weren’t going so much faster
Had you done much testing prior to Brands? Not very much in the 160 as I had been testing my new 190 to get the set up right and see if I wanted to race that. I had done one testing session at Brands in the 160 and the cars are similar to the extent that they are both front wheel drive MG ZRs. We heard rumors that you were planning on moving up to a 190 this season, is this true? Yes, I will do that at some point. Dan Surridge and Chris Wright have built me a new 190 over the winter and I did some track days, but not in dry weather to really try out slick tyres, which I have never raced on. Can you tell us more about your decision? I didn’t feel confident enough to race in it in the Trophy [Championship] at the start of the season, as I wanted to at least feel confident before I could be competitive. I had done no timed laps so had no idea what my speed was like compared to the other 190s. I am quite competitive, so I would not be happy going round at the back; also I did not want to get beaten by a 160! I will race the 190 in some non-Trophy races and hopefully do a round or two in the Trophy later in the year. Being the only female driver do you ever find this to be intimidating? No, everyone is very friendly and supportive, when you are out on track I don’t think it crosses anyone’s mind – definitely not mine. Most of the Marshalls assume I am male anyway! What is it about motor sport that you find appealing? I love cars and I am competitive. I have learnt a lot

Who do you see as your main rival in the championship and why? Think there are lots of rivals, everyone in Class C! New driver in the Trophy Championship Andy Campbell looks very fast and Oliver Barnard and Ross Makar are also quick. A lot will come down to car reliability as well during the whole season, but it looks quite competitive in class C this year.
Since 2003, three drivers in a ZR 160 (Class C) have managed to win the overall title, John Brown, Charlie Brown and Paul Streather do you think that there is a chance that you could do it this year? I suppose there is always a chance, but not if I move to the 190’s. To be honest it is not something I am focused on, so probably unlikely. Who would you say are the drivers to watch throughout the championship and why? In the 190’s, definitely Paul Streather who it looks like will have a good battle with Chris Bray. Paul is very focused on getting his car set up perfectly and he drives it sympathetically, smoothly and very fast! Chris is, of course always quick and Paul Luti could also do well, if his car behaves. Andy Campbell also impressed in the 160, so is definitely one to watch. What advice would you give to other women who want to get involved in motorsport? Many women think that getting involved can be a bit intimidating at first as there are not many of us! I found it important to build up some confidence before and started doing track days initially. If possible get as much tuition as you can, quite a few novice days now exist and some will offer free instruction. The track day organisers are very helpful if you need any advice or support. It’s good to have someone with you who knows the ropes and stops you feeling quite so intimidated about being the only female, It disappears as you get more confident and get to know the circuits. If you find a series with women drivers, go and watch some of the racing and talk to them about how they got involved. Most people will be more than happy to chat, so don’t be afraid to speak to them. When I started racing with the MGCC Trophy, there was one other lady racing, Helen Waddington. She was very helpful and supportive (as well as many others in the team). After a very short time you forget that you are in the minority.
Most of the Marshalls assume I am male
What is your aim for the season? My main aim is to enjoy myself and get faster times than last year. I would also like to switch to my ZR190 successfully, so I would sacrifice overall class position to do that.
Previous drivers have gone on to race in the Clio Cup, British Touring Car’s and many others, do you see yourself remaining in the MG Trophy Championship or going else where? I certainly don’t see myself doing the Clio Cup or BTCC, without a lottery win. I do have a MGA and MGB historic race cars so would like to do more with them going forward. No plans to move on from the trophy at the moment, just hope to do other races as well.
APRIL 2011
What advice would you give to everyone? Never think you can’t learn and improve. Always be aware of the cost, it’s not a cheap hobby, for most of us it will always be only a hobby. Sponsorship is very unlikely (or at least any that will really pay for anything) so be realistic about what you can afford to run and take part in. Speak to people to understand the budget you will need for different race series and set realistic targets. In the end though, find a friendly series, with competitive grids and do as much racing as you can!
Julia will be back in action at Oulton Park in May
