whitney port Fashion editor Tara Sephton tells us why Whitney is the ultimate intern
dĂŠbut profile Photos taken from google
Whitney Port is the essence of cool
sophisticated elegance. Once a brighteyed Teen Vogue intern this loveable blonde grew to become the fashionista of 2009 and with a clothing line launched at New York fashion week - 2010 isn’t looking bad either. When it comes to style you either have it or you don’t and when someone gets it right you just have to sit back and applaud – something that us women find hard to do. I have this impulse every time I see Whitney Port in magazines or on TV, whatever ‘it’ is, she has it. First gracing our screens as LC’s co-star in MTV’s ‘reality’ series The Hills, the 24-year-old is now a seasoned TV star but despite her success Whitney has never been one to hog the limelight. She quietly gets on with things, working hard and getting rewarded for it - remember the trips to Paris with Teen Vogue. It’s this honest, hardworking attitude that helps create her effortlessly glamorous look. Her style reflects her relaxed Los Angeles roots, with a New York twist, a mixture of soft and hard, old and new. Often papped wearing the best of Sass and Bide, Zac Posen and of course Diane von Furstenberg she isn’t afraid to mix in high street pieces from H&M, making her lowend meets highend wardrobe achievable. On a recent trip to the UK she even discovered the joys of Primark – a girl after my own heart! I love the fact that she isn’t afraid of a short hemline - but with legs like a supermodel who can blame her. She breaks up floral pieces with strong tailoring and accessorises her uber-shiny California locks with DVF hair bands. Her determination to succeed in fashion took her to NYC, the setting of her spin-off show, The City,
now in its second series. Having worked for resident Hill’s bad guy, Kelly Cutrone at Peoples Revolution, Whitney quickly became a successful fashion PR working for the likes of Diane von Furstenberg. It was here that her style matured; she became the ultimate beach babe in the big city. A new city also brought a new man and her relationship with Aussie musician Jay Lyon started and finished in front of the MTV cameras, all amid vicious rumours of his infidelity. But for Port this added a Cheryl Cole type humility, the girl-nextdoor factor, as it became evident that she was just like us (only surrounded by the glitz of NYC). Despite her relationship problems it’s no surprise that this city sleeker is now fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a designer. Her first line Whitney Eve is very much representative of her own style with vintage influences, she describes it as a ‘fun, party-girl line’. With dresses from £98.00 it means we can all have a piece of Whitney’s wardrobe. See whitneyport.celebuzz.com for details.

The
hot list Book deals, coverage in Vogue, industry invites and front row seats at fashion week: the bloggers are taking over fashion. We scoured the web to find the top 5 bloggers infiltrating the industry...
Photos taken from all web sites mentioned
1
Number 1: wishwishwish.net Recognised by ASOS and Mulberry - with an invite to this years AW show, 19-year-old Carrie has been creating web sites since she was 13. This experince has obviously paid off because wishwishwish is one amazing blog. A fashion student, her blog focuses on fashion and her everyday outfits. The quality of everything, from the pictures to the videos
is second to known and that’s why Carrie gets our number one spot! D: If you had to give one piece of advice to someone starting a new blog, what would you say to them? C: ‘Stay true to yourself and ‘your vision’ and don’t let anybody get you down! Post as much as you can, comment on lots of other blogs and get to meet some fabulous people in the process.’
Number 2: theclotheswhisperer.co.uk

Amanda Knox’s blog chronicles her adventures as she takes on the fashion world (with her dog Butters of course) “Fashion blogger, editrix, stylist and author, there’s no place on earth I cannot shop: I speak to fashion and it speaks to me.” says Knox on her blog. Her first book, Alexander McQueen: The Genius of a Generation, out on May 7, 2010, has been met with mixed reviews by leading fashion editors and because of this she slips to the number two spot. 11
Number 3: kayleighannstyleblog.blogspot.com 21-year-old Kayleigh updates regularly with her views on the latest fashion news, as well as style photos like this one of Olivia Palermo (left). She blagged her way into London Fashion Week this year so we think she deserves the number three spot! Kayleigh describes herself as ‘determined, passionate and happiest when creative.’
3 5 Number 5: styleofafashionista. blogspot.com The world is a big dressing up box for this anonymous fashionista. One day a rock chic, another a vintage vixen who ever she may be she sure has style and gets our number five spot!
4
Number 4: whatkatiewore.com This colourful blog created by Katie and her boyfriend is based on the ultimate challenge...to wear a different outfit every day for a year! Joe writes the blog, Katie wears the clothes, we love stopping by each day, as the outfits get more and more imaginative. This blog had to be in our top five!
behind-the-scen A candid,
She started out shadowing stylists and doing work experience stints with design
houses such as Mulberry but, Gemma Hayward’s persistence and hard work paid off and she’s now a senior stylist and successful freelancer, styling celebrities such as Coleen Rooney. We followed her for the day...
What: Nautical/safari shoot for the Indy’s Saturday magazine. When: Thursday 8th April Where: Old Leigh in Leigh-On-Sea, Essex 10:00 – The sun is shining for a not too early call time and the team meet at Gemma’s house. The makeup artist does the hair and make-up on the model and Gemma picks out, irons and hangs the clothes. 11.00 - Everyone, including the photographer Leo, drives down to location. Old Leigh, a pretty little fishing village perfect for the nautical look. 11.10 - While the photographer and his assistant scope the area, Gemma and her assistant dress the model for the first look. This is done in the car park while everyone helps shield the model’s dignity from unwanted onlookers. It’s all glamour! 11.30 - Shooting starts with the
model sitting on an old beached boat. Gemma’s really pleased that the weather is so great - this shoot was postponed once already.
‘This is done in the car park while everyone helps shield the model’s dignity from unwanted onlookers. It’s all glamour!’ 12.00 - We all try on some of the clothing sent by Cos – one particular dress looks awful on us but great on the model, we all feel very envious! Everyone involved is having a great time and Gemma explains this is because she’s got to the stage in her career where she can pick and choose who she works with and only ever works with people she gets on with. 1.00 - Steaming through the five looks and different sets. Result: the local pub give us some free drinks.

2.00 - We rap for lunch, all back to Gemma’s for fish and chips in her garden! The model even tucks into a plate full – how unfair! 3.00 - After a hair and make-up change and re-packing the styling case the team drives to the next location for a safari shoot, a nature reserve - this really is multi-tasking at its best. 4.00 - It’s still sunny and the clothes sent from Karla Otto PR, including a Valentino Red label jumpsuit, look amazing. 5.00 - Except for a few nosey dog walkers the reserve is pretty empty and looking alot like the Sahara rather than Essex. Part of Gemma’s job is to find the locations – she found this one while walking her boyfriend’s dog. 6.00 - It’s a rap! After five looks everyone is rather tired but Gemma and her assistant still have to pack up the clothes. We head back to Gemma’s house and the make-up artist removes the models make-up. 6.30 - Everyone leaves for home after a successful shoot!

jessic a sawy er Craving the bright lights of the
world’s fashion capitals Jessica Sawyer is ready and waiting to become the next big thing. But, as Tara Sephton discovers, the dreams of a wanabe model don’t always glitter... When I meet Jess for our first photo shoot together it quickly becomes apparent why she wants to be a model. The sun is shining, we’re at a quaint train station (the set for our shoot) and the stylist has clothes by D&G and Zara lined up to be worn. Rather a nice days work by anyone’s standards. It’s also clear why Jess is determined to pursue this notoriously competitive career path. Long, blond hair, a killer size 6 figure and perfect skin – she’s model material alright.
So once the first few looks have been shot I find a sunny bench with Jess to look back over the past year and find out what’s in the pipe line for this upand-coming model. What a beautiful day, are all your shoots as nice as this? If so I think I need a career change... ‘Well, the short answer is, No. So far today has been a dream, good weather always helps but its nice and quiet too which always makes everyones job easier. Interfering public can be an occupational hazard when doing locations shoots. Good styling helps too, I love the clothes for today, you might find a few go missing’ (laughs) Talk us through the look for today’s shoot... ‘I would say city chic which plays on all the key trends, particularly nautical. Everything that we’re shooting is very wearable, mixing high street with high end. There are some great summer workwear looks.’ This is your sixth shoot, are you starting to get use to this now? ‘I’m definitely getting more confident and I’ve learnt what the photographers want or need now, although each one is different. It’s a constant learning curve.’ Most of our readers won’t recognise you, what modeling jobs have you done in the past? ‘The most commercial work I’ve done would be two different shoots for more! magazine at the end of last year, they often use new talent. I’ve also worked with photography companies Venture and Munlai Photography, producing promotional material for their web sites.’ [continues on p.21]

How did things start happened for you and what advice would you give our wanabe fashionistas out there? ‘It might seem cliché but I was the little girl who would put on mum’s shoes and walk up and down the lounge. If you really want to do something make it happen and don’t give up. I thought I might be too short at one point (5”7) but I got the work with more! magazine because my look was more natural.’ Obviously you are only just starting out in your career but so far what has been your high point? ‘I would have to say a shoot I did in Turkey for my portfolio, it was at sunset and so beautiful.’
‘...there are definitely pressures’ And any low points? ‘No horror stories yet thank goodness but there are definitely pressures. I was offered some work by a lad’s mag, the money was great but you have to look at the bigger picture. I want to do fashion.’ In five years time where would you hope to see yourself? ‘Signed or picked up by a top agency like Storm and working as a full time model. I’m freelancing at the moment while working as a PA.’ Finally Jess, you turned up looking super stylish this morning, what are your key looks for SS10 going to be? ‘For me it’s all about comfort so lots of harem trousers and peg leg chinos. My looks quite laid back – very LA. I’m loving the nautical look and H&M’s new Garden Collection for floaty summer florals.’

events As fashions elite cosy up on the
front rows of the AW and SS shows, everyone else is left wondering ‘what it is really like?’, ‘what does everyone talk about when the shows run late? (as they always do), ‘do they talk?’, ‘does Anna Wintour mingle with the Olsen twins?’. Well we have some ‘alternative’ events that the fashion world, and even us mere motels, can finally attend.
Alternative Fashion Week 2010 In England’s fashion Capital, London’s Spitalfields Trades Market played host to an ‘alternative’ fashion week this April. Over seventy designers showcased their work, mostly independent, from all over the UK aiming to establish their labels. While the press and buyers got to reserve front row seats, this event was still open to the public, so everyone got to see the models strut their stuff down the catwalk. Best of all this weeklong event (19th -23rd April) was free with collections taken for the Barnardo’s charity. It will return again next spring so be sure to check it out.

The Intern Diaries
Week one of a three week fashion placement, we get all the gossip from our anonymous intern...
Day 1: ‘This week I started my internship with The Independent on the fashion desk – feeling very metropolitan and channelling Whitney Port all the way. Having only had editorial work experience and a stint in PR, this is my very first fashion placement (excited squeal)!! First impression: amazing building and really nice people.’ Day 2: ‘I’ve been tidying the fashion cupboard today - it’s such a mess but I love sitting amongst all the designer clothes! I also met the fashion editor, which was quite daunting. She’s super stylish and super skinny and you certainly wouldn’t mess with her. She’s the ultimate fashion cliché!’ Day 3: ‘It’s not all glamour. I’ve been spending my day calling in camera bags from PR’s for a top ten feature. The only one to get excited about is an Anya Hindmarch – very cute.’ Photos: Tara Sephton
Day 4: ‘As much as I love them, high heels and the tube just don’t mix well. I can survive the car park, train and walking to the office but not the underground - especially in rush hour. Today, lesson learnt, I have a pair of flats in my Mulberry handbag.’ Day 5: ‘So I survived my first week! Yay! Next week I get to assist on a shoot and possibly compile my own beauty page! Who ever said you only make a cups of coffee was very wrong.’

new kid on the block: ASOS, My Wardrobe, NET-A-PORTER, Browns household names and leaders in online fashion retail but there’s a new kid on the block... The e-tailer industry has seen huge growth over the past decade and interestingly, most of the key success stories are businesses founded and created by ambitious, fashion forward women. Women, who are now reaping the rewards of their hard work, like Natalie Massenet, who recently caused a fashion media frenzy when she sold NET-A-PORTER. com for a reported £50m after starting the business in 2000. So it comes as no surprise that other ambitious young women are trying their hand and one-to-watch? Entrepreneur Tara Cowland. The 23-year-old is taking on the industry heavy weights with taralacey.com, an online fashion boutique which launched in March of this year. Unlike other online fashion retailers Tara Lacey boosts ‘hard to find’ international designer pieces, several of which are exclusive to the site. Names like young Brit, Olivia Rubin and bikini label Aguaclara. It specialises in affordable luxury for women confident enough in their style to recognise quality and cut rather than being swayed by big labels. “The collections available have been

handpicked to appeal to women with a certain lifestyle and attitude. Quality and styling take precedence over household ‘designer names’” says Tara. “The site intends to be a shopping haven for women who have confidence in their own choices and who want to make a style statement at a price they can afford.” Entrepreneur Tara is a graduate of the London College of Fashion and has worked in fashion retail, PR and on online fashion publications. It was this varied fashion experience that helped her gain an overall insight into online fashion retailing, giving her the guts to develop and establish her own web site and business. 27
