Another point of view BY ANN YOUNG The Journal-Standard
Oh no!!! Not again – January arrives and we start planning for Best of the Region. It takes four months, from beginning to end, to provide our readers with this 64-page product in April. We really don’t look forward to the process because it involves lots and lots of time and hundreds of phone calls. We choose the dates, run the ballot and then wait for all the hundreds and hundreds of ballots to be returned. They are checked over one by one to assure that one person hasn’t filled out a multitude so that they can claim to be the winner. (Every year we have to throw out over one hundred ballots that are false.) Then we take them to be independently tallied by a person who knows Freeport and the surrounding area. A month is given to count all ballots and tally them on the sheets we provide.
When they are all counted, they are delivered back to our department and our page layout person types up the list for our salespeople. She and I are the only two people who know all the winners. When the salespeople go out to give the good or bad news to advertisers and businesses in our area, they only know the specific clients that they have on their list. Not all the winners. It takes another month to sell the ads, write stories, take pictures, design the ads, and layout the tab for you to enjoy. So today our staff breathes a little easier as this lands on your door, and we know once again that the most popular survey in the region is complete. So please enjoy the 15th annual Journal-Standard Best of the Region. Remember, you are the ones that make this happen!

J.H. Barkau & Sons Awarded Their 15th Title As Best Used Car Dealer By Journal Standard Readers In The 2011 Best Of The Region Contest BY JAE HEZLEP for The Journal-Standard
There has been a category for Best Used Car Dealer in the JournalStandard’s Best of the Region since the competition began 15 years ago. Every year, J.H. Barkau & Sons has won the award as the best place to buy a pre-owned car. Rick Barkau, one of the two sons and Co-General Manager, exclaimed, “It’s an honor to have this designation for 15 consecutive years. I’ll never forget how excited we were the first year, and we’re still thrilled every year we win it.” Willie, Co-General Manager said, “Thanks for voting for us. It’s kind of astonishing that we’ve won every time. Without the customers and readers, it would not be possible.” Jim Barkau, Rick and Willie’s, dad, sums it up by reminding, “If it weren’t for our great customers, we wouldn’t be here.” For most of his life, Jim Barkau has been involved with the business his dad, John, started in Cedarville nearly six decades ago. As a youngster, Jim changed license plates, fixed tires, chased whatever needed
to be chased, and shadowed his dad who also was a long-time employee of Furst McNess. When Jim was 18, he began to buy the business from his father who was retired from Furst McNess. Unfortunately just a few years later, his dad passed away leaving Jim, a recent high school graduate, in charge. Jim has worked passionately to develop this successful business that he and his wife, Barb, now share ownership with their sons. In the future, he hopes to be able to pass the auto opportunity on to the fourth generation and ‘teach the ropes’ to his grandsons now ages 9, 11, and 14. In the meantime, he is gratified whenever he’s out driving around in the area to see all the cars and trucks with Barkau stickers on their back bumpers. To date, Barkau Automotive has delivered over 65,000 vehicles.

They operate from three main locations including pre-owned vehicle stores in Freeport and Cedarville where there’s also a service department. Their third location in Stockton is a new car dealership featuring Chevrolet, Buick, Chrysler, RAM, Dodge, and, Jeep vehicles. The Stockton location was recognized as the third place winner of the 2011 Best of the Region new car dealer award. The firm also known as J.H. Barkau & Sons Automobiles is noted for its huge inventory. On any given day, there are over 1000 used cars and trucks on the lots. “We have a car for almost every buyer,” said Rick, “with prices ranging from $800 to $60,000.” The buyers and their needs are varied. Some recent comments by satisfied customers include: ■ “It’s a one-stop place to buy a car,” explained David and Georgia Whitehead, customers of more than ten cars since 1985. “They have a great selection, a lot of financing options, and they’re great people to work with.” ■ “Barkau has always been here for us as our needs changed and our family grew,” said Jeffrey and Mindy Janicke of Janicke Lawn Care. “We’re humbly gratified to have Journal-Standard readers once again vote Frank Jewelers as the Best Jewelry Store In The Region,” said Debra Fontana. “There are a lot of choices in the marketplace,” she continued, “and we genuinely love our customers.” For over 50 years, and now the third generation, the Fontana family has served fine jewelry and gift clients from throughout the region. So, why is it called Frank Jewelers? Originally, the store was part of a chain of jewelry stores owned by the Frank family. “Joe” Fontana, Gary’s dad, managed the store for several decades and introduced Gary to the business. In 1992, the Frank family decided to sell their business and Joe looked to retire. That is when Gary and his wife, Debra, both having several years of experience in the store and a passion for the jewelry industry, purchased the Freeport store. Out of respect for decades of excellent reputation, the Frank name was retained; the store remains Frank Jewelers today.

Since then, they have expanded the showroom to almost five times the original size, added dozens of galleries of fine jewelry and gifts, and brought new meaning to a burgundy gift box. The couple constantly strives to stay ahead of the curve on current trends, consumer satisfaction, and product design. Gary credits the fact that Frank Jewelers is an independent, family-owned store, not a place that relies on program selling and that the business is a personal choice. “Debra and I are not afraid to step outside the box. We strive to know our customers - their likes and dislikes - and have developed friendships with them and their families. Ours is much more than an associate/client relationship,” he stated as he talked about the staff at Frank Jewelers, now numbering a dozen. “The staff is knowledgeable, well-trained, and empowered. All are certified by the Diamond Council of America - important as diamonds and the store’s Bridal Collection are the foundation of the business and continued strength,” Gary continued.
When asked about the range of wedding rings available, Gary offered a price range of $149 to $20,000 explaining the purchase experience is consistent regardless of the price tag. He noted that assisting couples with their engagement always tends to be an emotional, romantic, and memorable event. He also mentioned that Frank Jewelers prides themselves in custom design, recrafting and in-store jewelry repair. The store also offers a convenient layaway plan and in-store financing. And what do customers say about the business? According to B.J. Wolf, PhD., of Sterling, “My wife, Sue, and I have been doing business with Frank Jewelers for the past six-or-seven years because, first and foremost, Frank Jewelers offers a high quality line of jewelry. You can always count on the merchandise being first rate. Secondly, everybody in the store knows the product line and is more than willing to answer questions and make certain you know what to look for and how to distinguish a good stone from a mediocre one. When asked about changes in the business during the past several years, Gary explained, “Despite challenging economic climate, business is good. People are still falling in love, getting married, and purchasing diamonds. During the economic downturn, we’ve also reinvented our business and introduced some different price points. Debra hosts themed, personalized events designed to connect with specific customer groups.
That said, Gary clarified, “Our print campaign in the Journal-Standard has been an integral part of our growth. Their programs including the Bridal Show and Taste of Home allow partnerships between businesses and the community. Partnerships are the most powerful way for businesses not only to survive, but also to grow.”
For example, four years ago in May, Frank Jewelers introduced Pandora jewelry, the hand-finished, colorful beads and individual silver and gold charms that originated in Denmark. Two years ago, after Debra’s customer-to-customer introduction and several Pandora events, the line of modern jewelry was expanded to a Gallery within the store. This making Frank Jewelers the first store in Illinois with Pandora Shop-In-Shop status. A personal appearance and celebrity signing party by Debbie Brooks, two years ago, is the way Debra created a following for the designer’s upscale handbags and accessories. Other unique brands and different items that have been built around niche customers include Raquelle Bianco’s sterling and enamel that are made with Swarovski gemstones, Citizen’s Signature watches, and the Hershey Kiss necklace, a specialty item with the younger customer in mind. Always looking ahead, Frank Jewelers treats teenagers and young adults with respect. In June of last year, the company “tiptoed in” to social networks by joining Facebook. Now managed by a 21-year-old,
The company’s commitment to the community is significant including support for the Freeport Art Museum, the FHN Foundation through their exclusive sponsorship of the “Glitter and Give” program, Red Cross, United Way, and Freeport High School. Debra, a graduate of Aquin High School, has been involved for some nineteen years volunteering in various areas within the school system and fundraising, particularly The Aquin Extravaganza. Gary presently serves as a volunteer member of FHN’s Board of Directors and the Freeport Downtown Preservation Committee. Previously, he has been an officer of the Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce. Mention Split Personality, Bacon Up Is Hard To Do, Two’s Company, Turkey Lurkey, and Contender and most Freeporters recognize the titles as some of the most popular items on the menu at the Garden Deli Dreem Ice Cream and Sandwich Shoppe owned by Ann and Kerry Rippy. Journal-Standard readers have voted the restaurant as the number one place for lunch for the second year in a row, and this year they added top billing for their soup, as well. The restaurant was also recognized for their ice cream offerings as among the Best of the Region. Ann, a Freeport native, expresses her thanks to the readers who voted for her business by commenting, “Freeport is a good community, and we have the best guests around.” In December of 2008, the Garden Deli then located at 1258 West Galena Avenue closed to be relocated across the street. The couple purchased the Garden Deli in 1997, adding soup year around and chili to the menu. Over the years, Ann grew increasingly concerned that the stand-alone property was too close to the highway and parking at night was too dark. When Joan Welt, Lincoln Mall manager, approached her about changing locations, Ann said she knew that was the place to go. “Joan’s fun and great to work with,” explained Ann, as she notes the community is excited about the Mall’s resurgence, and all the storeowners in the Mall get along. Appreciative of her mother, father, and brother, along with Kerry’s mother, Ann credits their great support for making the move possible. The new restaurant has attracted considerably more people who prefer to dine in including the Red Hat Ladies and a Bible Study group. But this is not to say that the carry-out business isn’t popular. Mealtimes are busy with lunch guests frequently lining up at the door waiting for the 11:00 a.m. daily opening. One of the hallmarks of Garden Deli according to Ann is, “We do everything fresh. We try to buy local. We’re slicing all the time. All our salads which include macaroni, lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, pea, potato, and 7-layer are homemade from scratch with the latter being the most popular.” Sandwiches, available hot and cold, now number over 30 with the alltime most popular being “Winner! And All Time Chomp” which features ham, beef, turkey, salami, pepperoni and Swiss and provolone cheeses. The Garden Deli crowd is also fond of pickles eating up over 33,000 pickle slices each month. So popular are the pickled cukes that a bowl of pickles is on the menu. So are hot dogs, chicken salad, tuna fish, Kerry’s chili with a kick, and a couple of flavors of soup Wisconsin Cheese and Potato Bacon being the most ordered. There are choices for breads and rolls, too: oat, potato, rye, 7-grain, wheat, white, basil Parmesan, tomato basil, and croissants. Mrs. Mike’s potato chips, brownies, cakes, pies, and now CupCakery cupcakes round out the carbs choices. Ice cream has always been a part of the Garden Deli. In the 70s, the

restaurant was the first in Freeport to serve Flurrys, a soft ice cream treat with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup candies. Today, the Flurry’s menu has expanded to include Butterfinger, Snickers, Oreo, Heath, Cookie Dough, Turtle, strawberry and German chocolate. Other dairy confections such as 20 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream, banana splits, Fudgeannas, sundaes with traditional toppings, malts, and shakes are also featured. Ann describes the part-time staff of seven as respectful young men and women. “Their parents should be proud,” she said, “They are cheerful, have good manners, and know their jobs which is to keep the line moving. When we make a mistake, and no one’s perfect, we do our best to make it right. Another goal is to keep our prices down and work together during rough times.” As to the future, look for “Beef Me Up Scotty”, a new sandwich featuring roast beef, corned beef, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut. Also, a lasagna sandwich is in the works. Still being perfected are some new sundaes. Expanding services to include special events and private parties are also on the horizon.

One time, when we were in the Quad Cities visiting and shopping with our son and his family, we saw a sofa we liked. We took down the manufacturer’s information and visited Rite-Way when we returned to Freeport. They were able to get the exact sofa for us without any problem. Cal has always treated us fair.” Tom’s comments mirror the company tagline: Rite-Way, where we treat you right and reinforce the company’s philosophy of business: Giving the consumers the Best Price, Best Product, and Best Service that we possibly can. He is active in the Freeport Downtown Development Association, serving on the Executive Board and among the leaders of their promotional activities such as Music On Chicago and events at The Masonic Temple. Wescott is currently a board member of the Salvation Army and the Highland Community College Alumnae Association. His company also supports many area activities sponsored by local non-profit agencies.

The 2011 Cruze is expected to deliver segmentleading fuel economy with a new Ecotec1.4L, I-4 turbo with variable valve timing, including up to 40 mpg on the highway with a high-efficiency model called the Eco.

Brent Dewar, GM vice president, Chevrolet Global brand, said at the unveiling of the Cruze in December at the Auto Show in Los Angeles, “Along with the Volt electric vehicle, Cruze is the
latest tangible example of how Chevrolet is working on exciting products that range from gas friendly to gas-free. Delbert estimates the Volt will be available in Freeport about 2012. The Volt combines the efficiency of an electric car with the long-range capabilities of a traditional vehicle. It can drive initially on electric power, gas-free and tailpipe-emissions free. When needed, it uses a quiet onboard gas generator to provide additional electric power. In the meantime, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, a popular global car refined for America, is attracting local, as well as national, attention. It is offered in LS, LT, and LTZ trims.

these self-described General Motors people, had looked at Bockers where Delbert sold them their last five cars. They were still undecided when they ran into Delbert out in the community. He asked if they were still interested in a new car and if they were thinking about a Cruze purchase. When they answered yes, Delbert suggested that they come back to the showroom for another look. Parked sideby-side at the dealership, they found a 2011 Cruze and a 2011 Malibu (one step up from a Cruze and named a Consumer’s Digest Best Buy three years in a row). The cars were nearly identical in color and features. When they compared the two, Linda said their decision to buy the Malibu was based on their test drive and the fact that it was easier to get in-and-out-of and had more leg and headroom. Also she said, “The deal we got made the Malibu very comparable in price.”

One such sale was to Larry and Sharon Meier who recently bought a new Colorado truck with a Club Cab. Since 1988, the couple has purchased seven new vehicles at Bocker, all trucks. “If at all possible, we believe in supporting our own people and businesses,” stated Sharon. “This red truck sold itself,” said Sharon. “When we saw it on the lot, it stood out as if it were saying ‘Take Me’. Then, the test-drive clinched the deal.” “They know their vehicles,” added Larry when asked about the reason he trades at Bockers. “I have no complaints. I love my new truck even more everyday,” he explained. Customers also sing praises about Bocker Auto Group’s customer service. Jim and Donna Kellner have relied on the company for their new vehicles and service since 1978. A high level of trust is one reason why. Dealing with service advisor, Wayne McCarthy, is another. “He tells me exactly what’s happening,” Jim said. “If I go there and Wayne tells me something, it is.”

This year, the Journal-Standard added a new category to the expanding and ever-popular Best-of-the-Region contest: Best Gift Shop. Readers responded by voting the first prize to Stone’s Hallmark Shop. David Stone, owner of the Freeport store and three others, thanked those who voted for Hallmark and mentioned some of his loyal customers have been with the business since they first opened in downtown Freeport in 1968. Jeanne Mulrooney, manager of the Freeport store, said, “Winning Best of the Region is quite an honor, and I’d like to thank our wonderful customers who come in regularly. In order to sell the Hallmark brand, however, Stones is bound by certain policies, some of which relate to the Gold Crown Program, which has been in effect for 20 years. “We’ve always carried much more merchandise than the Hallmark Pattern,” explained David. “Right now, I estimate only 50% of our store is in Hallmark merchandise with 80-100 different vendors representing the other half.” Merchandise ranges from Door County Gourmet coffee, frames, and Willow Tree angel figurines to stuffed animals, puzzles, popcorn shirts, and scarves. Their purses have also proven to be surprisingly sought after. Within the last year, Stones introduced DaVinci jewelry, a line of affordable and collectable costume jewelry, some with stones, some with beads. Six months ago, interactive story books came on the scene including Watson & The Case Of The Sneaky Stealer, Watson & The Case Of The Missing Acorn, and Watson & The Case Of The Missing Caterpillar. Shoppers will also find recordable storybooks. Two such titles are Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and All The Ways I Love You. Among the store’s top sellers are candles: Yankee, Village, and Bean Pod brands. Also, Fannie May fine chocolates, a long-time staple, with Mint Melt Always and Pixies being far and away the favorite candies. More recently, Stones added Abdallah candies from Minnesota that pair dark chocolate with sea salt, thought by many Freeporters to be a delectable combination. Ornaments - not just for Christmas anymore - are other sought after products. The 2011 Hallmark line, including Barbies, will be introduced during the Premiere Weekend featuring pre-orders and extra bonus
points on July 16th and 17th. A later release of other ornament designs will come out in October.
