CLASSIC CINEMAS ADOPTS NEW R-RATED MOVIE POLICY To help foster a distractionfree environment Classic Cinemas will adopt two new policies for R-rated movies starting Friday, March 2nd, 2012: Children under the age of 6 will no longer be permitted to R-rated features at any time even when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Page 4
FREEPORT AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
We will require the applicable general admission ticket for ages 6-11 to all R-rated features. By eliminating the discounted child ticket we hope to further encourage a mature movie-going atmosphere for films that are geared to an older audience. We struggled with this decision as our intent is not to dictate family values or determine what is appropriate for children. However, enough children become bored during Rrated features and subsequently disrupt fellow guests that we felt this change was necessary. We hope you see this as a small but positive step toward achieving a more enjoyable movie-going experience. As always, we appreciate your support, cooperation and feedback. Sincerely, Chris Johnson, Classic Cinemas

FREEPORT HIGH SCHOOL TO TAKE PSAE/ACT TESTS Dear Community Member: Freeport High School’s 11th grade students will be taking the PSAE/ACT exam on April 24 and 25, 2012. As you are aware, the PSAE exam is the assessment by which schools’ and districts’ academic progress are measured according to the No Child Left Behind Act. It is also one of the tests which colleges and universities utilize to determine college admissions and award scholarships. We are inviting our community to support the effort to encourage our junior class to do their absolute best. We ask you to talk to these students at church, in meetings, at work, etc. Please remind them how important it is to put forth their best effort while taking the exam. Juniors will be the only
students in attendance on April 24 and 25. We hope that providing our juniors with a familiar surrounding and minimal distractions will benefit them during the exam. We ask that employers not schedule the junior students to work late on April 23 and 24 to show them your support in getting enough rest to be focused for the exam. Sincerely, Patrick Hardy, Principal Freeport High School

FREEPORT AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE She said that how a person feels is not always a good indication of how healthy they are; in fact you may feel fine while life-threatening vertebral subluxations (spinal distortions) are damaging your body. Kintzel said many people are just walking targets, waiting for disease to strike before they decide to do anything about their health. They “feel fine” but have no energy; they “feel fine” but sleep poorly; they “feel fine” but are tired, have aches and pains, headaches or backaches. They’ve lost touch with how they really feel. They’ll return for chiropractic care when they “feel like it and not a minute sooner”. They’ve stopped listening to their body’s subtle signs of sickness. She said pain is often deceptive and does not necessarily give a true indication of health. “Your spine needs regular maintenance for best performance today and in the future,” she said. “The benefits of chiropractic care are best experienced over the span of a lifetime.” Kintzel opened her Freeport office in November, 2011 after a practicing for a time in Michigan. “I grew up here in Freeport,” she said. My entire family lives here so I came home to practice and be near my family.” She said she is remaining active with the Chiropractic Sorority based with the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa and she is interested in the networking opportunities available through membership with the Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce. “I’m working to get everything off the ground and I’m doing everything possible to
make Kintzel Chiropractic, Healthcare & Wellness & Fitness a successful business,” she said. “I very much care about what I’m doing and working with a dedicated personal passion for providing proper treatment is important. A patient can always tell if you really care about what you’re doing and that can make the difference.” Learn more about the services and benefits available through the Kintzel Chiropractic, Healthcare & Wellness & Fitness by contacting Dr Lori Kintzel DC at Kintzel Chiropractic, Healthcare & Wellness & Fitness, 888 W. My parents and brother live in Freeport and it just seems natural to be here in town with my agency.” He said they are just starting out, but things are coming together and he is looking forward to being in the position of needing to hire another therapist or two. “Since I specialize in treating child and adult trauma I think it might be a good idea to seek out other therapists that specialize in other areas so we could make working with specialty cases our brand,” Davenport said. He said that beyond the financial aspect of opening the business, he is looking at building a loyal clientele through education and quality care. From 6-8 PM on 3/20/2011, Davenport will be presenting on the topic: The Long-Term Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences. For years, doctors, philosophers, and other curious people have debated whether it is nature or nurture that shapes and creates our personality and general health. Although, most would agree now that it is biology AND the environment, a recent and extensive study (17,000) participants indicates a strong correlation between adverse experiences in childhood and long term physical and psychological illness. In this presentation, Mitch will share the results of this study and how it can help us
shape our childrearing, and public policies that impact our children and getting them treatment while they are young when possible. Mitch will conclude his presentation with a brief overview of treatment types for those who have experienced adverse childhood experiences. Davenport will do free community presentations on topics related to mental illness throughout the coming year. On 4/26 Davenport will present 10 Secrets of Positive Parenting (geared mostly for caregivers of children through age 9 or 10). Freeport’s Moose lodge was instituted Monday, September 20, 1909 and was located at 118 1/2 E. Stephenson Street. It was rather small and accessible only by a narrow stairway to the second story. 1913 was a year of major change for the International Moose Fraternity, not only did the Freeport lodge move to 107-109 E. Main Street, but The Mooseheart (The Child City) was built, The Women of the Moose was established as a unit of the Moose Fraternity and the Second Degree of the Moose “The Fellowship Degree of Honor” was established. The Freeport lodge currently has 15 members holding the Fellowship Degree of Honor or Third Degree of the Moose. In 1917 the lodge moved to a new three-story building at 103 E. Main St. (Across the street from the current JournalStandard.) The building was later razed and is currently a parking lot with green space. Annual dues were $20.00 back then and an enrollment fee was $5.00.

Page 10 In 1970 the Freeport Moose Lodge erected a new building on an 18 acre site 3 1/2 miles northeast of Freeport in Lancaster Heights that is off of Hwy 75 at 2342 Kenneth Drive. The membership then was over 1,100. It shrank to just over 900 on their Diamond (75th) Anniversary, but now stands at just over 400. In 2001 the lodge moved to its present location at 601 E. South Street in Freeport and qualified to be classified as a Moose Family Center according to Lynn Folgate, governor of the lodge at that time. Folgate served as lodge secretary from 1979 through 1983 and now serves as administrator. During these past 103 years the lodge is privileged to have seven members who have been elevated to the “Pilgrim Degree of Merit”, the fourth and highest degree of the Moose Fraternity. Twenty-five years ago public Bingo was held at the Moose and is still open to the public at their new facility at 601 E. South Street on Freeport’s South side on Sundays at 2:00 pm and Wednesdays at

You have probably heard some of the noise lately about Pinterest a new social media service that is supposed to help keep track of all the other social media services. One week my seventy year old mother is telling me to “check out this new thing called Pinterest” and the next week it’s the darling of the blogosphere. To its credit, the two year old
company has obviously captured everyone’s attention and the concept is definitely pretty compelling. Basically, Pinterest is a free service that allows its members to organize the things they find on the Internet by “pinning” them to their own personal online “pin-board” where the items can then be re-pinned, CONTINUED

ing people will find it probably isn’t going to cut it so take some time to develop a goalsbased strategy that addresses the same tried and true questions: what’s your market, who’re your customers, and how can you excite their interest? As always, the best place to start is at the beginning so do yourself a favor and at least take a little time to check out the Pinterest site and see how other small businesses are using the service. Once you understand how it works – and it really isn’t that complicated – then you will probably see right away if it has any real value or not for your particular situation. Just don’t ignore it because with millions of users and growing, Pinterest may indeed be yet another way to help you grow your business. www.pinterest.com

liked, and commented upon by other users. I have to say, it really is pretty unique compared to anything else I’ve seen before and, just like other social media, I’m sure there are all kinds of ways that small businesses can take advantage. Certainly too many to try and do it any sort of justice here. In most cases, small businesses will get out of it whatever they decide to put into it. Mistakes will be made, time will be lost, and not everyone will find the secret sauce, but the same could be said for any other sort of marketing. Of course, like so many of the other social media services, small businesses must now decide if it’s worth a try and, if so, how to actually make it work for their particular size and type of enterprise. What Makes a Phone Rugged & Reliable? Lots of smart phones can provide e-mail access, take pictures and run calendar and contact applications. Few can also read a bar code on a rusty motor housing that is exposed to the elements, instantly access the unit’s service history, display a schematic, generate a work order, capture the customer’s signature electronically on the screen, then use Bluetooth to direct a mobile printer to generate a signed copy. Today smart phones are being used in similar scenarios and are also being used to automate sales, delivery, inspection, contracting, retail operations, home healthcare, professional services and other operations. As applications like these are emerging, the definition of what makes a good smart phone is changing. General-purpose smart phones have notoriously short life
cycles when used for these operations. Annual failure and replacement rates of 50 to 90 percent or higher are common; plus, device manufacturers frequently introduce new operating systems on current and new models, which creates an ongoing need to port, test and maintain
applications. The frequent churn of devices and operating systems makes it difficult to maintain application consistency across the user population as phones are replaced and rollouts are scaled over time. Enterprises can avoid rapid replacement cycles by selecting the right devices for the work environments.
Ruggedized handhelds that are designed for enterprise operations can reasonably be expected to last three to five years, even when frequent handling, data collection and outdoor use are normal business processes. In emerging use cases the smart phone’s role is changing, from primarily a communications device to a computer that is used to enter data, access enterprise systems, verify information, complete transactions and document activity. Field professionals need to access the same information as their colleagues in the office, but work in environments where office-appropriate equipment would not survive. Ruggedness and reliability are essential.

Four things that make your resume look dated By Toni Bowers for Techrepublic Even if people keep their resume up to date with their latest jobs, they often plug that new information into an old format. Here’s how to tell if your resume is dated and what to do about it. Many people aren’t great at keeping their resumes up to date. Even if they remember to add new accomplishments or jobs, they still just plug the new information into the old resume. Here’s why your old resume may need tweaking, and some things to keep in mind when you’re doing that tweaking. 1. You still have an objective statement. Some people swear by the objective statement, and a broad, descriptive statement is good as an introduction. But what you don’t want is the old “Seeking a position that utilizes my outstanding project management skills.” I hate to break it to you, but hiring managers couldn’t possibly care less about what you’re looking for. The exercise is all about what you can do for the company you’re applying to. Instead, use a profile that outlines what you’ve accomplished and in what ways you can bring value to the company. 2. Your resume looks like it was typed on a Smith-Corona. Remember back when leftalignment was the only formatting option you had?
But now, apps like Microsoft Word let you do everything but make the words dance to music. I’m not suggesting you justify your margins, or center-align everything (please don’t do that!), but you can let go of the old Company name…tab…Position held…tab…..dates worked mentality. (While we’re on the subject, I suggest you put things in order of their importance–your title first, add a comma and then the company name. If you want to add dates, then you can do that and then right-align that portion.) 3. You consider yourself “hard working” or a “good communicator.” Two problems with this: One, you’re talking about yourself so you’re a little subjective. How much weight do you think that will carry? Two, unless you have some way to prove this (for example, “I conducted all end-user training for the company” can replace “good communicator”), there’s really no reason to even mention it. 4. You offer references upon request. Honestly, a savvy employer will have googled the heck out of you already so there may be no need for references. Also, it’s understood that if a reference is needed, the employer will ask for it and you’ll provide it. Save that part of your resume real estate for something important.
