By Mike Cowan, The Journal-Standard
For 14 years the Journal-Standard’s Best of the Region awards have been anxiously anticipated by readers and certainly no less by businesses, individuals and organizations throughout northwest Illinois. The ballots have been tallied and now we discover who took 1st, 2nd or 3rd places in the 66 voting categories. Who do voters say has the best bowl of soup or the tastiest steak in the area? Selling your home — who gets the nod among realtors? Where are we tuning in on the radio dial? When we need a new or used car — what dealers garner the
Each year, Best of the Region shines its editorial spotlight on a number of area businesses. The purpose is to personalize these enterprises to our readers. When we visit or use their products and services, it helps to know a bit about the owners and staff who are responsible for continued success in the marketplace. The five businesses selected for stories this year include: Tim’s Auto Care, Auto Repair category; Royal Liquor and Pub, Liquor Store category; Maria’s Pizza, Pizza category; Midwest Community Bank, Financial Institution category; and, Deininger’s Floral, Flower
Shop/Florist category. B.O.R ballots are published in the J-S during January and returns are brought in to the newspaper office for tabulation by an independent third-party source. Specific results of vote count totals by category and business are not revealed in order to maintain contest integrity. During the current period of economic uncertainty in the region, no business or organization should assume that B.O.R. voting results will remain the same as time goes by. Success can be fleeting and customers or clients will always gravitate to those who are willing to offer the best in quality and friendly service at an affordable price. Congratulations to all the owners, managers and staff who have earned the right to be ranked among the JournalStandard’s Best of the Region in 2010!
Our sincere thanks to the

Did you know your vehicle was painted with waterborne paint? Car Manufacturers have been using waterborne paints for quite a few years now. It’s been our policy to keep up with the best technology available. We’ve been using waterborne paint for a couple of years now, and it’s our goal to help protect the environment. Waterborne paint gives you the same Quality your manufacturer gave you when you purchased your vehicle. When you think environmentally green, think Quality Auto Body Inc. The only green shop in the Region.

Nearly every week, two-tothree tool vendors visit the shop to sell updated diagnostic tools - all slightly different - such as a snap-on scanner valued at $6000. Lab scopes, multimeters, and air conditioning machines are other new tools of the trade. One of the most important jobs for today's technicians is to be able read the sensors and interpret the information. What causes the sensor

There is an initial inspection that includes all lights and indicators, the horn, air conditioning, heater system, and temperature control. Frank Mazzarisi, owner of Maria's Pizza on West Galena in Freeport, comes from a long line of pizza makers. His parents were born in Aila, Italy, near Palermo, the over 2,700- year-old city in southern Italy known for its rich history, culture, architecture, and gastronomy. When they came to the United States, they first settled in Rockford and later moved to Lanark where they operated Mazzarisi's restaurant.

Frank's mom's first job was at Maria's in Rockford which later became the inspiration when Frank was naming his restaurant in Freeport. Located on the former site of Gerry's Hamburgers, where Walgreen's is now, Frank leased the building and opened Maria's Pizza's and Dinners some 18 years ago. He moved the business to its present location at 922 West Galena Avenue in 1995.

Early Bibb Lettuce Leads To Deininger's Floral Shop Jae Hezlep for The Journal-Standard
Five generations ago, a young man named George Deininger, left Monroe, Wisconsin on horseback to seek his fortune. He got as far as Freeport where he started to sell garden vegetables door-to-door from a cart powered by his horse. As his truck garden grew, so did his ambition to harvest bibb lettuce earlier than his competitors. He built greenhouses on 18th Street and before long the greenhouses were also growing flowers. Thus, GreatGrandfather George estab-

As he grew, so did his responsibilities and, in time, he and his wife, Olga, became the owners. When their son, George, was about ten, he started working in the business along with his siblings.
