The Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 110th anniversary. “This is a proud moment for all of us at the Chamber,” said FACC Executive Director Kim Grimes. “The Chamber has always been very fortunate to have strong leadership, and those leaders are largely responsible for the growth and economic stability that have made Freeport a special place to live and do business.” He attributes continued Chamber growth to the organization’s ability to keep up with developing technologies and its willingness to listen to and act on behalf of its membership. “We’ve had to change with the business world,” Grimes said. “We’ve made the Chamber website more user friendly, we’ve added a Facebook presence, we’re offering webinars, but there is still nothing that compares to going out and meeting with our members face to face.” He explained that a hands-on approach is the key to success when dealing with the business community. “Listening carefully to folks and working together to make this area grow is still our key to success,” Grimes said. “No matter how fast technology runs, our priority will always be our members.”
Yesterday The adage, “You can’t tell where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been,” rings especially true for the Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce and its 110 years of service to its membership and the community. “Proposed Business Men’s Association Meets Cordial Support,” was the headline on the front page of the June 8, 1901, Freeport Daily Bulletin, and with that simple header the Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce was born. The article tells of a meeting in city hall where business men (yes, we are aware of that politically incorrect male domination-based terminology) assembled to discuss the future of Freeport and the ways they might steer the town to new heights. C.W. Harding accepted temporary chair responsibilities with the organization and spoke to the assembly explaining how useful a business men’s organization could be, giving as primary example the case of a small factory that was seeking a location just a few weeks earlier and whose representatives visited Freeport. Harding said the town met all their requirements except the matter of rent for four or five months necessary for start-up. He noted that a few men contacted failed to see the
importance of digging into their own pockets to pay the amount, but Harding said it would be of little matter to an organization of 100. Consequently, Freeport lost that factory and Harding feared that other similar instances would occur and without organized support for its businesses, the town would fail to thrive. Former Freeport Mayor J.P. Younger told the group that he viewed the association as a potential way to lend a helping hand to every movement for the interest of the city. “You will find that in towns that have these associations you can drive downtown in a buggy without danger of breaking your neck,” Younger said. Apparently the prospect of not wearing a 19th century neck harness appealed to those in attendance who met Younger’s remarks with thunderous applause. W.A. Service also addressed the group noting that in his experience, communities with business organizations grew while those without failed. “I speak of the Owosso and Livingston counties in Michigan,” Service said. “Fifteen years ago they were about equal in population. The inhabitants of the Livingston county town were men of large means who were content to sit still. The
citizens of the town in Owosso county formed a business men’s association and as a result of such an organization in the one town and the lack of it in the other, one stood still while other grew from 3000 people to 10,000 or 12,000 with a large number of manufacturing institutions.” The meeting carried well into the evening with considerable discussion until following remarks from the likes of Dr J.O. Burbank, F.A. Read, P.B. Thompson and Aldermen Flachtemeier and McGovern the meeting adjourned with the understanding that the organization would meet again the next week. And they did, and again and again for a full 110 years. The important thing is that our Freeport fathers saw the importance of a business organization and moved to implement one. It promptly grew and was the eighth in Illinois to receive designation by the US Chamber of Commerce for “High qualitative standards of performance.” It embraced its women’s division and the Freeport Junior Chamber of Commerce. It formed committees that piloted projects in rural, local, and state affairs as well as industry and labor relations. It immersed itself in legislative actions, human resources, housing, education, SEE FACC

t’s been busy as always the past few weeks with several very positive projects that are providing a lot of momentum in the business community. There has been a considerable amount of discussion since Dr. Patrick Hardy’s speech given to our Chamber members at our recent Annual Dinner. The Chamber applauds the Vision 20/20 Committee for taking the lead on facilitating several meetings that I have attended for the purpose of receiving input from the public on what direction a Community Strategic Plan should follow. Several of us also had the pleasure to hear the message from the President of the Greater Dubuque Development Corporation on how the City and County of Dubuque has become a model City in the Midwest attracting such companies as IBM. I have no doubt we can accomplish many of the goals that Dubuque did to become a model city. It starts with a positive attitude and cooperation from a majority of the community. We were very excited to sponsor again this year the Leadercast Broadcast shown at Crossroads Community Church. We had several Chamber members in attendance to hear first hand from
some of the countries best motivational leaders. Their messages were very inspiring and fit right in with the very positive message that is going thru Freeport right now. We appreciate all of these who attended this event and know that we were very glad they participated. Our Chamber is part of the Tri-State Alliance consisting of Chambers and Economic Development organizations from Freeport, Rockford, Belvidere, Beloit, Dubuque, Galena, Janesville, and Rochelle. Our group has been working together for over 3 years to help drive Development and Infrastructure to the Tri-State area. We held our annual Summit last week in Rockford and had several important guests and speakers including the Illinois and Wisconsin Transportation Secretary’s, the Director of the Illinois Tollway and the Director of Illinois Railway who confirmed that they will begin this summer on the railroad construction for the Amtrak train route to begin 2014 that will travel thru Freeport!

MEMBERnews Alcohol Compliance Checks Conducted Through Partnerships for Success The Freeport Police Department, through the Partnerships for Success Project grant with FHN Family Counseling Center, conducted alcohol compliance checks on 11 area businesses in the past months. The compliance checks are supported by the Partnerships for Success grant to reduce underage drinking. FHN Family Counseling Center holds the grant and partners with the Freeport Police Department to implement alcohol compliance checks. The purpose of doing these checks is to enforce state and local laws and to identify, warn and educate alcohol establishments that serve or sell alcohol to minors about the penalties associated with the provision of alcohol to underage youth. Underage drinking is a serious health concern and
unfortunately, too many teens say alcohol is easy to get. “Our youth are a precious resource, and the data shows that the legal drinking age of 21 is a law that protects them,” said Sharon Mockridge, community educator at the FHN Family Counseling Center in Freeport. “It is important that the adults charged with the sale of alcohol abide by the law and not sell alcohol to minors, which contributes to the problem of underage drinking.” Compliance checks will continue to be held periodically over the next several months in Freeport. Community foundation announces grants to Stephenson County The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois announced today that it will award over $28,805 in new grants to organizations in Stephenson County. These grants bring the Community Foundation’s FY 2011 total awards to Stephenson County to $35,305. The grants will be awarded from the Community Arts and Humanities Fund, the Community Needs Fund, the Dr Louis and Violet Rubin Fund, the Margaret K. Aldeen Christian Ministry Fund, and the President’s Discretionary Fund. All of these funds are permanently endowed, meaning the principal is never used. Seven organizations in Stephenson County will benefit from these grant funds. Expect Exciting Changes at the Freeport RAMP Wheel-AThon We have made the following changes to our traditional Wheel-A-Thon event: Typically the wheel-a-thon has been held on a Saturday morning. This year’s wheel-athon will be held in the evening on Thursday, July 28th. Registration begins at 4:30pm, the Wheel-AThon is at 5:30pm with dinner and awards at 6:30 pm. In the past we have asked that teams or individuals to use a wheelchair to understand the challenges people with disabilities may face wheelchair users face on a daily basis. The Highland Community College Foundation Board of Directors has announced the appointment of James M. Berberet as Interim Executive Director. The announcement was made by Todd Weegens, Foundation Board President. Berberet takes over from
Susan Atherton, who retired in January after 16 years as Executive Director. According to Weegens, “Berberet is no stranger to the Highland Foundation and its operations. During his 30 years as a board member, he was president for roughly 20 years and also filled in during transitions between several full-time and part-time executives.” Weegens went on to explain that Berberet’s primary responsibility is to re-energize the “Growing for tomorrow… changing lives today,” campaign to fund Highland’s new Ray and Betty Stamm Health Science Nursing Wing and the Wind Turbine Technician Training Center, both on the Highland campus. Campaign contributions are also being used for scholarships for Highland students. Berberet also plans to broaden the base for charitable giving to Highland. “This means extending the campaign initiative further out into the four-county College District,” Berberet said, “as well as developing support through specific groups, such as area businesses, Highland alumni, professionals of all backgrounds, other not-forprofit and civic organizations, and the agricultural and medical and health science communities.” Corporate and individual donors have contributed more than $2 million toward the $6.8 million goal, according to Berberet. Berberet, who has been in business and industry in northwest Illinois for most of his career, retired in early January from Ultrasonic Power Corporation, where he had been President and Chief Operating Officer for four years. He resides in Freeport with his wife Kathleen. HCC Trustee Attends Department of Education Summit Highland Community College trustee, Diane Gallagher, represented HCC and the nation’s community colleges at a U.S. Department of Education regional summit on March 23 in Indianapolis, IN. The primary objective of the Department of Education’s Community College Regional Summit, “Partnerships between Community Colleges and Employers,” is to bring together federal, labor, industry, education and philanthropic leaders to share successful efforts that increase college completion rates and prepare students for the 21st century workforce. The summit, hosted by Ivy Tech Community College, was designed to allow community college leaders to share best practices that increase the number of college graduates and improve the skilled worker labor force. The summits bring together regional and national leaders in an effort to meet President Barack Obama’s goal to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. The Indianapolis summit is the second in a series of four conferences scheduled nationwide. “Highland is taking the right steps to help students succeed and move ahead with the President’s challenge”, said Gallagher, before the 150 attendees of the summit. “As a small school, partnerships with businesses and support from grants are having a greater importance to reach the goal of increasing graduation rates.” Gallagher went on to share specific information regarding several recent successful partnerships and grant awards HCC has secured, such as a $898,000 National Science Foundation grant to develop wind turbine technology training modules; partnerships with local industries such as Greenlee Textron, Inc., AkzoNobel Coatings, Inc. and

Healthcare Strategist Talks Reform in Freeport “Healthcare reform probably hasn’t affected you personally … yet,” Paul Lee told a crowd of Freeport business leaders Tuesday. “But its effects are starting to be felt around the country, and all of you will be affected,” he said. Lee, the leader and founder of Strategic Health Care, a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy firm specializing in healthcare issues, spoke in Freeport at the invitation of Monroe Clinic and FHN. His resume includes work with the Ohio Hospital Association and time as press secretary to a U.S. Senator, as well as media training and service in the U.S. Army. His message Tuesday was non-partisan, focusing on
details on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), the official name of the healthcare reform bill signed into law last year. After offering up pie charts and graphs displaying everincreasing healthcare costs and demands on our country’s healthcare systems, Lee launched into a detailed look at the pros and cons of reform, including a look at the GOP’s “repeal and replace” plan and the House GOP Medicare reform plan presented recently by Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan. Ryan’s plan includes provisions for raising the age eligibility for Medicare to age 67, which has caused some “uncomfortable” constituent meetings, Lee said. “Americans have two views of healthcare – and we’re the only country in the world that looks at it this way,” Lee said. “We have a vertical view when we’re standing upright and feeling healthy – ‘we’ve got to bring costs down!’ But we also have a horizontal view, when we or someone we love is sick [lying down] and needs care – ‘I don’t care what it costs, do everything you can!’” Congress, he said, has the challenge of trying to make Americans happy with health care both vertically and horizontally. He believes that repeal of PPACA isn’t likely, so the best option for everyone – individuals as well as businesses – is to learn all we can about the changes coming our way. “We mostly hang five and six inch gutters,” said owner Joe Bach. “Coming to us as early as possible is really best.” She added that hospice is not about giving up. “They have criteria to meet in that they have to have a life-limiting illness, however that is not what our focus is when we go into a home to provide care,” Barker said. “We go into a home and ask, ‘What can we do to make this absolutely the best day for you and your family?’” She explained that issues may not always be physical, but emotional. “Maybe they have things to finalize or things they need to say to someone, so care involves all of our team members, not just the nurses, but the social workers, the chaplains,” she said. They all play a very big part in what we do for our patients and the families that we care for.” She said that Unity Hospice® of Western Illinois is working to organize a palliative care program for folks with uncontrolled

symptoms that may need medication with their care.
