Wishes come true for Camp Maria participant For 65 years Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have welcomed to Camp Maria located on Breton Bay in Leonardtown, Maryland, campers of various ages and backgrounds, some with special needs. Carol McKean, SCN, Director, recently shared the story of one very special camper. For the past five years 11-year old Matthew “Mattie” Stepanek of Upper Marlboro, Md. has been a camper at the

Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Summer Camp hosted at Camp Maria. At the close of the week, the children are encouraged to write down their wishes, attach them to balloons and let them go. For the past five years Mattie has made the same three wishes: to have his poems published, talk peace with Jimmy Carter, and share his message of peace on the Oprah Winfrey show. Mattie has dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy, a disease that disrupts the body’s breathing, processing of oxygen, and heart rate. His mother, Jeni, has the adult form of the disease that has already taken the lives of his two brothers and one sister. In August 2001, Mattie lay in the pediatric intensive care unit of Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., unable to attend the annual MDA event at Camp Maria, yet staffers went ahead and released a balloon on
his behalf containing his three wishes. Suddenly, those wishes began to come true… and then some. After complications following a tracheotomy, Mattie had been in intensive care for three months as September approached. His doctors suggested that his condition was deteriorating, and that his wishes needed to be granted quickly. The hospital’s public
relations staff went to work, phoning the offices of Jimmy Carter and VSP Books, a local publisher. Yet, after coming so close to death that he recalls “seeing the angels,” Mattie’s condition began to improve, and his life began to take a dramatic turn.

His poems reflect his life philosophy: “I trust God more than all the people,” Mattie writes. “He saved my life many, many times when I was a baby, which means I have something to do on earth. Camp Maria Retreat Center serves diverse groups Camp Maria Retreat Center, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, has dramatically extended its services since opening 65 years ago as a campsite for girls. At the time travel was difficult, and a summer home was needed for international students taught by the SCNs at St. Mary Academy in Leonardtown, Md. The Sisters looked at their beautiful frontage on Breton Bay and saw a solution — Camp Maria. The thousands of campers since that time have come to include males as well as females, adults as well as youth; representing many nationalities and cultures. Throughout the year Camp Maria hosts family, high school, parish and non-profit groups for day or weekend EXPLORING NATURE: Dudley Linley leads a group of young campers in a nature retreats. Carol McKean, SCN, Director of hike program at Camp Maria Retreat Center. Camp Maria, said the camp’s schedule includes, among others, special retreats for African Americans and for the women of Chrysalis House, a center for drug and alcohol recovery. Camp Maria exemplifies the SCN Mission of “care for the earth” through programs that capitalize on the area’s natural environment. Among them, nature walks, offered for various age levels, educate participants in good environmental practices while sharing the beauty and history of Breton Bay and Southern Maryland.

Arkansas SCN guides families through journeys of heartbreak and hope As Outreach Coordinator for St. Vincent Health System in Little Rock, Ark., Carol Ann Bonn, SCN has been helping indigent patients to access much needed services since 1996. But in the past year, she has shared her attention with women and families who have pastoral needs that are equally real and tragic – those grieving the loss of a child through miscarriage. According to Lynette Spruiell, LPN, Coordinator of St. Vincent Health System’s Perinatal Loss Program, one in four pregnancies in the U.S. ends in such a loss. Although the health system had been offering services for years to parents who experienced a loss through stillbirth or neonatal death, in April 2000 the staff saw a visible gap in pastoral services available to women and their families who had lost children during the first 20 weeks of life. She said the health system and the program wanted to live the message that “Every pregnancy matters; every mother matters; every life matters; every family matters.” As a result, the hospital made significant changes to its prenatal loss program, adopting the nationally known RTS program that
involves training select staff members on the grief process and how to help families through it. Too often in the past the focus had been on miscarriage as a medical event – the new desire was to develop programs to help parents deal with their bereavement and uphold the dignity of life for their baby. “It’s like a dream come true,” Sister Carol Ann said of what has been done with the program. “It has closely followed the Catholic teaching that life is precious.” Sister Carol Ann now works with Spruiell to guide families through this process with counseling, home visits, follow-up calls, burial services and the gift of memory boxes. Families are also invited to attend meetings of a monthly support group called “Journey.” Spruiell pointed out that unresolved grief has been the cause of many mental problems and physical ailments. “Besides a ministry, this is preventive medicine,” she said. Nurses, a social worker and a chaplain have also been commissioned for the program, which has grown significantly during the past year with the addition of monthly collective burial services and an ecumenical memorial service. has also gotten involved. Calvary Cemetery, which is owned and operated by the Diocese, has donated enough land to St. Vincent for burials for the next 16 years. Huson Funeral Home donates its services each month, and Floral Express, which operates through the St. Vincent Doctors Hospital Gift Shop, donates floral sprays. On November 1, 2001, a guardian angel monument was blessed at Calvary cemetery during a memorial service for the families of almost 600 babies who have died. “This monument is a promise that your little ones will never be forgotten,” Bishop J. Peter Sartain said. The inscription underneath the guardian angel reads: “Before I formed you in the womb

I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you” (Jeremiah 1:5). Sister Carol Ann added, “This program puts into action the ideals of our mission as a faith-based organization and shows that our caring does not end at the hospital doorstep.” She said many families are grateful when she places a follow-up phone call to see how they’re doing. “Sometimes grieving families find it hard to call back for help,” she said, “even though we give them our number and try to assure them it’s OK to call us.” She said a young bereaved father once answered her phone call and said, “This (loss) has been the hardest thing ever, but your caring has made all the difference.”

When Leon Shadowen talks about Sister Mary Borgia Cahill, he shakes his head and says that she didn’t have any idea the influence she had on him and on his family. Indeed, how could she have known that her care and concern for a young boy at St. Thomas Orphanage in Kentucky would eventually inspire a foundation that would enable disadvantaged students to attend a Catholic high school in Pennsylvania. After his mother and grandmother’s death, Leon and his brother spent four years at the orphanage where Sister was Superior. He remembers that she made clear to the boys what was acceptable behavior. “She could be pretty tough, but then
He and his daughter were with her when she died. “That was a tough week for me. No one can replace your mother, but those Sisters were the next best thing,” Mr. Shadowen said. “Sister Mary Borgia never met a kid she couldn’t love.”

After high school he joined the U.S. Army, was married, finished his education, and raised four children. “I always knew where she was as she moved to various missions in Maryland, Mississippi
and Kentucky,” Mr. Shadowen said, “When I married she was back at St. Thomas Home. I took my whole wedding party to see her. She had us go to the chapel first. That was typical. There was a spirituality that was all around her. She didn’t have to be talking about it all the time, but it was there.” In the final years of her life, Sister Mary Borgia’s health began to fail and she lived at Nazareth Home, the SCN nursing home in Louisville. Eventually she used a wheelchair. Still, he would regularly have her come to his home for Sunday dinner. “My sons would lift her in and out of the car and make sure that she got into the house safely,” he said. “My children

In 1999 her love inspired one of Mr. Shadowen’s sons and his wife to establish a foundation to provide tuition to a Catholic high school for children living in a poor section of Pennsylvania. “I saw what Sister meant in my father’s life and I wanted to give other young people a chance like that. I also know from him and from my own experience what a difference a Catholic education can make,” he said. “It was an easy step to think about giving the scholarships in honor of Sister Mary Borgia because she was the genesis of Catholic education in the Shadowen family.” So far 15 students have received the scholarships. “Some people ask me why I do this, saying that it is only the tip of the iceberg. I respond that if you are one of these students, it is the iceberg.” Sister Mary Borgia would probably wholeheartedly agree with him. SCN Journey

Monuments honor 15 SCNs who pioneered education in Union County, Ky. Sisters of Charity of Nazareth returned to Union County, Ky. on Sunday, October 28, 2001 as they hosted an afternoon reception at Sacred Heart Parish in Waverly for former students and friends of the SCN community. Members of the SCN Leadership Team led the prayers at the blessing of the fifteen SCN gravesites at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Two new headstones, engraved with the names of the Sisters buried there, had been donated by Henry & Henry Monument Company. In her welcoming remarks, SCN President
Maria Vincent Brocato paid tribute to the sacrifices of the first three SCNs who came to Union County in 1820. Sister Maria recounted how the pioneers, upon finding their dwelling was not ready, spent their first night in Union County in a scrubbed-down log cabin henhouse. Sister Maria expressed appreciation to the people of Union County for their support of SCN ministries in the

Participants will have time to reunite with classmates and view the Motherhouse renovations. Registration information and program details will be mailed to former members as the date approaches. For more information, contact Patsy O’Toole in the Office of Congregational Advancement at potoole@scnazarethky.org or (502)348-1520. A gathering is planned for alumni and friends of SCNs in Leonardtown, Md. on March 13. The SCNs have been in ministry in Maryland since 1885. inquired about their former teachers who were unable to attend. As the SCNs attending the event made the drive from Nazareth along the interstate highway to Waverly in a little over three hours, they were humbled as they thought of the journey Sisters Angela Spinks, Frances Gardiner and Cecily O’Brien made on horseback 180 years ago to open St. Vincent Academy. It had taken the Sisters one week to reach the school, an educational institution that served the people of Union County as well as the surrounding areas until it closed in 1967.

Others may prefer the ease of charging a credit card for any donation. Additionally, individuals may donate online through the web site for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. To make a donation by credit card, you may: ✦ donate online through the SCN web site at www.scnazarethky.org ✦ call 502-348-1586 with your credit card number, expiration date and amount you wish to donate ✦ complete the form found on the SCN web site or in a direct-mail appeal by providing your credit card information and mailing to the Office of Congregational Advancement ✦ fax the information to 502-348-1587 We are grateful for the many ways that you help make our ministries possible through your support of the Mission of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY: Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. celebrated its 50th anniversary on January 2. The hospital opened on January 2, 1952 with 180 new hospital beds and 35 bassinets. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth had accepted the challenge to make the dream of Chattanooga citizens for a hospital that would provide high quality, compassionate care and offer a faith-based choice for themselves and their families come true. Today Memorial Hospital is an integrated healthcare system licensed for 420 beds. More than 3,000 associates provide services to 40 different locations throughout the community. During Memorial’s 50 years, over 100 Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have served in various areas of the hospital and SCNs remain an integral part of the healthcare facility today. Pictured during the celebration is Judy Raley, SCN, Vice President for Mission of Memorial Hospital.

REBUILDING BELIZE: In the Fall issue of SCN Journey, the Sisters who minister in the country of Belize reported the devastation Hurricane Iris had caused in the villages there on Oct. 8. Since that time the SCNs have been busy responding to the needs of the people, many of whom lost their homes to the storm. Here, an expectant mother stands outside her damaged house. Thanks to the generous response of SCNs, Associates and friends of the Community, nearly $2,000 has been forwarded to the SCNs in Belize to assist those in need.

SCNs join religious across the U.S. in National Day of Prayer and Fasting Every day since January 1, 2001 the members of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) and their congregations of Catholic sisters have been participating in a “rolling fast” that would ensure prayer and fasting for the Church and the world every day during the past year. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have taken part in this momentous event that has resulted in more than 70 different prayer gatherings across the United States including National Days of Contemplation held on March 2 and December 7. In addition, participating Congregations held their own days of fasting and prayer. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth held a prayer service at St. Vincent Church on Friday, Sept. 28 to commemorate the Congregation’s Day of Prayer and Fasting in solidarity with other women religious in the U.S. “In light of the recent terrorist attacks on United States targets, we members of LCWR experience deepened solidarity with victims of violence all over the world and are more convinced than ever of the need for contemplative prayer to bring healing to our world,” states LCWR president Kathleen Pruitt, Western Province Leader of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. The Leadership Conference of Women Religious has approximately 1,000 members who are the elected leaders of their religious orders, representing 76,000 American Catholic sisters. The Conference develops leadership, promotes collaboration with church and society, and serves as a voice for systemic change.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and the other members of LCWR invite everyone to join them in another Day of Prayer and Fasting scheduled for March 15, 2002. “We know that we are not alone in praying for healing and peace in these dark days for our country and world,” Sister Kathleen said. “We hold this national day of prayer so that people of faith across the United States may join with us in silence and hope for peace.”
We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
