New SCN mission established in Belmopan, Belize On September 27, the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul, a new SCN mission site was dedicated in Belmopan, Belize. Bishop Osmond Peter Martin blessed the house in an 11 a.m. ceremony attended by SCNs, SCN Associates, other religious in the country, friends and family members. SCNs Beverly Hoffman and Higinia Bol, a native of Belize, will staff the new mission. Sister Beverly Hoffman is in ministry as a physical therapist for a nongovernmental agency called CARE-Belize that works with disabled children in their homes. She is mentoring three Belizean women who are learning physical therapy and play activities to assist in the children’s development. Together they instruct caregivers in simple activities for the children. She is working in three of the six districts of Belize — Belize,

Sister Beverly recently went with a Belizean woman, Yasmini, whom she is training, to a primary school in Bullet Tree Village. Together Yasmini and Sister Beverly evaluated a child who uses a wheelchair and was recently integrated into infant I (first grade). They were able to assist the teacher in making the child’s desk more accessible, and recommended that a ramp be built so the child will have easier access to the bathroom. Yasmini will seek a business in the community to donate the lumber and the mother will find someone in the village to build the ramp. The principal and teacher were happy for the assistance in transitioning this child into a regular classroom.

Roman Catholic, the coCathedral school in Belmopan City. The school has 350 students and is staffed by 14 teachers. She is teaching 28 fifth graders from numerous ethnic backgrounds — including Creole, Mestizo. Mayan, Asian, English, Honduran, and Salvadoran. Sister Higinia will also serve as the Resource Religious Education teacher for the entire school. Sister Higinia recently met the parents of her students at a parent/ teacher meeting at Our Lady of Guadalupe School. She found the parents very supportive. Those who were financially able willingly contributed classroom needs such as a water cooler, bottled water, a fan and cleaning supplies. “They were also very sensitive to those parents unable to contribute due to lack of resources,” Sister Higinia said. “The

parents are very motivated and interested in their children’s education and future learning.” Although both SCNs are in full time ministry, they have been approached about other ministry possibilities such as assisting with the Lay Ministry Program, sacramental preparation, working with the youth, and evangelization in the villages. They have found the people in Belmopan and the surrounding areas to be very welcoming, affirming, and open. “We have discovered numerous needs, and hope to creatively assist with some of these needs in the future,” said Sister Beverly. “It is our hope that with the establishment of the second mission in Belize, that the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth will be able to expand our presence to the Belizean people.”

Three make vows as Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Three women recently made vows as Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in liturgies held in the United States and India. Lilly Joseph Vellanayil of Poroor, Kerala, India, made vows as a Sister of Charity of Nazareth on June 30 in Mokama, while Christine Kunze and Rose Johnson made vows in a July 27th celebration at St. Vincent Church, Nazareth, Ky. The Vicar General of Patna Diocese, Father Mathew Uzhuthal, was the main celebrant for the liturgy in which Sister Lilly made vows. The Barauni parish community, several friends and many SCNs were present to share Sister Lilly’s joy. Sister Lilly is the daughter of Aeliyama and V.P. Joseph of Poroor, Kerala, India. Former SCN Convent serves new purpose as Family Life Center On August 5, 2003, the Grand Opening of the Brockton Family Life Center (formerly St. Patrick’s Convent) in Brockton, Mass. was celebrated. The former St. Patrick’s Convent, with an addition on the back, is now a complex of 13 apartments that provide temporary housing for families in crisis. The SCN Congregation is the sponsor of one of these new apartments that will serve families in the Brockton area. The Family Life Center is the result of a collaboration of 16 human service providers dedicated to strengthening children and families in the Brockton community. The initiative has been led by South Shore Housing, Catholic Charities, St. Patrick’s Church and the Old Colony YMCA. Residents of the center will be families who face being

separated due to stress and conditions that would otherwise require the children to be placed in foster care. Each family in the center will have an individualized Family Care Plan, with services offered by a consortium of providers. Services to families include child care, individual and family therapy, career counseling, substance abuse treatment, domestic violence education and intervention.“The Family Life Center will be a longterm investment in strengthening families, which are the cornerstone of a healthy community,” said Erin Spalding, Director of Youth and Community Development for the Old Colony YMCA. “This is the type of integrated solution that has a long-term positive impact on families.”

possible by state and local funds. Private contributions are being sought to furnish the apartments. Having served the city of Brockton since 1887, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth were happy to be a part of making this new life possible for their former convent. SCNs Marion Reardon, Alice Wills, Janet Dougherty, Barbara Gilmetti, Ann Whittaker, Anne Marie O’Shea, Emily Pugh, Maureen Taaffe, Tess Browne and Jane Elizabeth O’Connell attended the grand opening celebration and enjoyed a tour of the renovated convent. Much praise and gratitude was expressed to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for their tremendous

“One could not help but feel great joy, knowing that the mission of Mother Catherine, to reach out to the needs of her time, was now being fulfilled in a unique way in our time,” said Jane Elizabeth O’Connell, SCN, “in a place hallowed by the memory of all the SCNs who lived and taught at St. Patrick’s School in Brockton.”

Construction/renovation of the center was made

In the late 1800s the Archbishop of Boston recognized a need to offer education for the thousands of immigrants who had arrived in this country from the oppressed countries of Europe, particularly those from Ireland who had left their homes after the famine. Father Doherty, pastor of St. Patrick parish at the time, acquired land at the corner of Perkins and Lawrence Streets, at the center of Brockton’s Irish population. He then contracted with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth to staff the new school. On August 10, 1887, eight SCNs arrived at St. Patrick’s Rectory on Main Street in Brockton, Mass. Their school was to be the first and, for many years, the only parochial school in Plymouth County.

contribution since 1887 to the city of Brockton. Most especially, words of appreciation to the Sisters were offered by the Honorable Thomas P. Destination: From Nepal to Ireland…

Navjyoti Center student goes for gold at Special Olympics World Games “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” -- Special Olympics Creed

Ajit Tamang, a student at the Navjyoti Center for Mentally Handicapped Children, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, was selected as one of the five young adults to represent Nepal at the 2003 Special Olympics in Dublin, Ireland in June 2003. Ajit was born in the Kavre District, in the hills north of Kathmandu. His father died when he was quite young, forcing his mother to take him and his elder brother, Rajit, to Kathmandu where she found work in a carpet factory. Ajit has been a student at Navjyoti Center, a school funded by the American Himalayan Foundation and staffed by SCNs, for five years. His particular disability relates mainly to an inability to show emotion, and he has great difficulty in expressing himself. He is very withdrawn, preferring his own company to that of other students, and has poor social skills. “If I tell him to sit somewhere, he will stay there until someone tells him to move,” said Arpita

Mundamattam, SCN, the school principal. “I think that is why he is a good runner – we tell him to run fast and he does, until we tell him to stop!” “There are times when you can tell he is happy” said Ganesh, one of the senior teachers at the school who was selected to accompany the team to Ireland. “He knows that other people are excited about him competing and that also makes him excited.” His elder brother Rajit does understand and is very happy for Ajit. “Our mother is so proud that Ajit was chosen to go to Ireland,” he said. “To think that Ajit was the first in our family to leave Nepal is very exciting.” Five young adults, two girls and three boys, were selected from Nepal to represent the Kingdom at this year’s games, Ajit being the only representative from Kathmandu. The Nepal Special Olympics Committee receives funds from a donor organization in Canada and raises some money locally to pay for food, accommodations, and travel expenses for the team and officials. The Navjyoti Center was responsible for uniforms and a small amount of extra spending money for Ajit and Ganesh. Living at home with his impoverished family, Ajit hardly received the nutritional requirements of an international athlete, so a hostel run by the Jesuit Fathers agreed to take him in for the months leading up to the games, serving as a makeshift athletic training camp.

While Sister Arpita and Ganesh recognize that feelings such as honor, pride and excitement are difficult for Ajit to express, they recognize the importance of participation for all the students at Navjyoti Center, all the mentally disadvantaged children in Nepal and around the world. Participation in the games also demonstrates the abilities of young adults like Ajit and helps break down the discrimination and ignorance that plague the handicapped of Nepal. The 2003 Games showcased the athletic skills, courage, and dignity of 7,500 athletes with mental retardation from around the world, as athletes from 166 countries competed in 21 events ranging from athletics to sailing. Half a million spectators attended the events held June 21-28, 2003.

Ajit made his country, his family and the SCNs and other faculty who work at Navjoyti Center very proud. He finished in 5th place in the 400 meter run, 3rd place in the 4x100 meter relay, and 5th place in the long jump category.

MINISTERING TO CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: SCNs and lay employees at Navjyoti Center in Kathmandu, Nepal teach mentally challenged children like Special Olympics athlete Ajit Tamang. Each year the center participates in the Special Olympics program by fielding a team for competition.

Ten make first commitments as SCN Associates On September 27, 2003, the Feast of Vincent de Paul, ten women made their first commitments as SCN Associates during a prayer service held at St. Vincent de Paul Church at Nazareth, Ky. In preparation for this commitment, the women participated in six formation weekends over a two-year period. The purpose of the formation process is to enhance the baptismal call of the laity to be in mission to the People of God through the activities of their daily lives. In becoming SCN Associates, the women promised to deepen their spirituality, to build community with other SCNs and Associates and to reach out in compassionate service to others in the tradition of Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac and Catherine Spalding. Newly-committed Associates include:

On the Move

SCN Congregation begins a volunteer program The SCN Congregation has established a volunteer program, and announces the appointment of its director, effective September 8, 2003. Sister Chris Beckett is the new Director of Volunteer Ministry and has begun her work in the Congregation’s Office of Congregational Advancement. Sister Chris comes to the Office of Congregational Advancement after an eight-month sabbatical and initial orientation to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. In November 2002 she entered the transfer process into the SCN community after 32 years of life and ministry in the Glenmary Home Mission Sisters of America. During her years as a home missioner she served in missions in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky; the Deep South of Georgia and Tennessee; and the Mid-South of Western Kentucky. During her years as vocation and formation director, as a

leadership team member and as president, she, with the congregation, initiated and oversaw the development of two lay missionary programs as well as coordinated the Glenmary volunteer program for the United States. In fact, Sister Chris began her missionary life as a volunteer with the Glenmary Sisters in Waynesboro, Ga. in 1970. As a result of this experience she entered the Glenmary Sisters in 1971. The volunteer program is now in the initial planning stage. Sister Chris is meeting with those who were part of the original proposal to begin a volunteer program in order to gain a clearer understanding of the program that was envisioned. After these initial meetings she plans to form an advisory committee of SCNs and Associates. This committee will assist Sister Chris in developing a plan of action that will include: consulting with SCNs in the U.S. and Belize; locating sites for volunteers; finalizing

Sister Chris Beckett the application processes and policies and procedures; and determining if the program should consist of longterm and/or short-term experiences.

Postcards from the Journey

Why I became a Legacy Society Member SCN Legacy Society Member Bob Fugazzi recently reflected on why he chose to leave a legacy… From the time of my youth, a high priority for me has been, not only contributing financially but also taking an active part, whenever possible, in a variety of charitable organizations. After I sent a donation to the SCN Office of Congregational Advancement in honor of my cousin, Evelyn Fugazzi, SCN, I began to receive the SCN Journey. I was immediately impressed with the content of the Mission

Statement and the many featured articles exhibiting concrete endeavors of the Sisters making this Statement a reality.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Later when I received an invitation to become a Legacy Society member, it came to me that, through this involvement, my love of sharing myself with the LEAVING A LEGACY: SCN Legacy under-served through Society member Bob Fugazzi is personal and financial pictured with his cousin, Evelyn assistance could continue even after the Fugazzi, SCN. Good Lord calls me and am now looking into home! I have come to value becoming an SCN this membership very much Associate!

To notify the SCN Congregation that you have made provisions for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth in your estate plan, or for more information on estate planning, contact Kitty Wilson, SCN at OCA, P.O. Box 9, Nazareth, KY 40048, kwilson@scnazarethky.org, (502)348-1520.

SCNs to sponsor two Jubilee schools in inner-city Memphis At a ceremony on October 1, 2003, SCNs signed a covenant to sponsor two “Jubilee” schools in Memphis, Tenn. Jubilee schools are six inner-city Catholic Schools reopened during the Church’s Jubilee year. Dubbed “the Miracle in Memphis,” anonymous donors made the renovation and reopening of the schools possible through a multimillion dollar donation in 1999. SCNs will enter into a unique form of sponsorship with two of the Jubilee schools where the Congregation has long had a presence. The two schools are seeking no financial contributions – only sharing of the SCN charism. The idea for the sponsorship came from Mary McDonald, Superintendent of Catholic Schools in Memphis. Her belief is that Catholic schools were successful in the past because they were both Catholic and shaped in the charism of a particular congregation.

St. John and Little Flower Schools were selected for sponsorship by the SCN community. Grace Saia, SCN, is the former principal of St. John School and Trudy Foster, SCN currently serves as principal of Little Flower Primary School. SCNs hope to connect today’s students with the history of the community by providing retreat days based on SCN mission and values, having SCNs participate in school functions and visit the schools. During the October 1 meeting Mary McDonald presented the SCN community with a banner displaying names and pictures of all the Jubilee schools, which will hang in the Nazareth Office of the Western Province. SCN Western Provincial Susan Gatz, Vice Provincial Theresa Knabel, and Grace Saia, SCN presented Teddi Neidzwiedj, principal of St. John School; Trudy Foster, SCN, principal of Little Flower School; and Superintendent Mary McDonald with framed copies of the SCN Mission Statement.

SCN CONGREGATION CONTINUES CATHOLIC EDUCATION LEGACY: (foreground) Western Province Board member Sarah Ferriel, SCN, visits with children at St. John School, one of the two Memphis Jubilee schools that will be sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. In the background St. John Principal Teddi Neidzwiedj and former principal Grace Saia, SCN encourage students in their classroom work.

We Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are an international Congregation in a multicultural world. Impelled by the love of Christ, in the tradition of Vincent de Paul and the pioneer spirit of Catherine Spalding, we and our Associates are committed to work for justice in solidarity with oppressed peoples, especially the economically poor and women, and to care for the earth. We risk our lives and resources, both personally and corporately, as we engage in diverse ministries in carrying out this mission.
