“Wake up the world! Be witnesses of a different way of doing things, of acting, of living! It is possible to live differently in the world.” These words of Pope Francis to religious leaders have been a challenge to me, especially in this Year of Consecrated Life when women and men religious are urged to awaken the world through their very presence within it. As an SCN, I know that these words are also being spoken to our SCN Associates, our volunteers, and our many other collaborators across the world. Over the past several months I have been fortunate to see these words being lived out by so many in very touching ways. While visiting an SCN school in Anakkampoil in southern India, I was truly inspired by some 800 children sitting in a yoga position on the floor in complete stillness for meditation as part of their daily school assembly. The students ended their five-minute meditation, opened their eyes, and said in one voice: “I am the beloved child of God, I can do all things, I can make a difference and I will!” How perceptive the administration and teachers of this and other SCN schools in making that profound prayer a part of the beginning of every school day! I also experienced this kind of awakening happening at various places as I traveled further around in India. Many are being “awakened,” finding a determined and spontaneous voice within themselves. I realized that this younger generation can indeed “live differently in this world” because they have been helped to realize their own innate dignity. Experiences such as these have filled me with hope for our world and with gratitude to the many who participate in the SCN mission. As you read this issue of The Journey, you will see some of this “awakening” through the stories told by Sisters, Associates, volunteers and others. And each of you will understand how your own contributions to this mission help to make such transformations possible. As you reflect upon “waking up the world” through these pages, there is much that will fill you with gratitude and praise to our God. Such situations show us why the whole human family must “live differently in this world.” My own gratitude to each of our readers flows from the fact that the SCN Family works together to change the world. Together we are the joy of God and a cause of joy for one another. Together we are bringing the reign of God! Together we are creating new possibilities for the next generation. It is my hope that this issue of The Journey will encourage each of us to determine some new way to “Wake up the world!” It is the mission that we share, and the mission that we love. Thank you for making it possible! Sangeeta Ayithamattam, SCN

SCNS INVITE SUPPORTERS TO JOIN THE JOURNEY
During the Join the Journey luncheon in Louisville, Kentucky this past October, over 300 guests listened to stories of lives transformed by SCN ministries around the world. President Susan Gatz, SCN, shared a heartfelt account of how her Sisters continue to inspire her. She told the audience that she keeps two pens on her chest of drawers at home to remind her of an encounter with a young girl. The encounter in many ways speaks to the heart of SCN ministries. This is the story she shared:
happen to her if I said, “no.” Sister Cassie finished the negotiations with her in Hindi, I gave her the 20 rupees. Her eyes lit up and you could see her making quick eye contact with someone in the crowd as she danced off, clutching the money in her hand. With all my heart I wanted to follow her, find out her circumstances, make her life easier, see that she went to school, give her back her childhood. But all I could do was pray that that day she would be rewarded for making a sale.
“Several years ago when I was in Delhi, India visiting our Sisters there, Sister Cassie and I were walking down a crowded street in the heart of the city. All of a sudden this little girl came racing up and stood in front of me. She was about 7 or 8 years old, wearing a little pink dress that was about 3 sizes too big for her and she had short, cropped, almost shaved hair … She held out a handful of non-descript pens … In the back of my mind I was aware that somewhere not too far away was an adult for whom she was working. A mother? Father? Trafficker? Someone who was watching her every move, who had taught her how to approach a person and enough English that she could say, “buy a pen, Miss?” and to anticipate the question of how much and respond, “20 rupees for five.” Converted to U.S. currency that is about a quarter. You could see her holding her breath as she held the pens out to me, hoping beyond hope that I would say “yes.” I thought again about the adult off on the sidelines watching, and wondered what would
Around the world our Sisters are encountering children like this every day — as well as women and men who live in poverty of one kind or another. And we symbolically, and sometimes literally, follow them to find out the circumstances and then see what we can do to help improve the situation.” At Doors to Hope in Louisville, Kentucky; in San Antonio in southern Belize; in Metsimotlhabe, Botswana; in Surkhet, Nepal; in Delhi, India and in so many other locations in our world, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, impelled by the love of Christ, work to bring about the reign of God and transform our world. Through the support of the guests in attendance at the event, and all who join in prayer and support, SCNs are working to make our world a better place. We thank all involved for being companions on this journey!

100 YEARS IN
MCCA NDLESS
Sisters in Pittsburgh are marking a milestone as they celebrate their 100th year on McKnight Road. There is always a steady stream of activity on the St. Louise campus where Sisters live not far from downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Students can be seen making their way to Vincentian Academy, residents of The Villas walk the paths along the campus, area children play sports on fields on the back of the property, youngsters come and go from the music lessons at the convent, and the central offices of the Vincentian Collaborative System are abuzz.
As the Sisters celebrate a century on the property between Babcock Boulevard and Peebles Road in the township of McCandless, many reminisce about how this area of town was at one time farm land as far as the eye could see. At 98 years old, Mary Clement Pavlik, SCN, has watched neighborhoods and businesses take root around the once rural landscape. From this convent, Sisters have helped care and shape the lives of many of the area residents from birth to their twilight years. They have cared for toddlers at the day care center, educated students from kindergarten through high school, taught at various colleges, and provided care at hospitals and nursing homes. Sister Mary Clement first traveled to what is now called St. Louise in 1929, when she was just 13. At the time, township records show there were about 2,700 residents throughout the area which was mostly farm land, now there are 30,000. Mary Clement, just a teenager at the time, came as a student to attend the high school and lived with the Sisters on campus. In between her classes and studies, the young woman was expected to help out. Sister recalls her daily life at that time, including being asked to tend to some of the farm animals. Sister Mary Clement has kept a journal about her time as a Sister and in it, she has written about her days at school, her health care ministries, and life at the convent. “I always married the place, wherever I went,” says Sister with a laugh. A joy to be around, with her sharp wit and ability to tell a good joke, Sister Mary Clement not only watched the campus change but lived history, having met every Mother Superior Vincentian Home, left, and St. Louise Campus, right, are both located in Pittsburgh, Pa. The photos were taken in the early 1900s.

and President of her Congregation, including the foundress of the Vincentian Sisters of Charity (now part of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Congregation), Mother Emerentiana Handlovits. Sister Mary Clement recalls how Mother Emerentiana could often be found in the chapel, sitting in the back. Mother Emerentiana had helped establish the former Vincentian Sisters of Charity, and was one of the five women religious who moved to Pittsburgh from Szatmar, Austria-Hungary to minister to Slovak immigrants in 1902. The Congregation originally settled in Braddock, Pennsylvania, and later moved to McKnight Road in the North Hills. Since the Sisters first arrived on campus in 1914, the campus has transformed. It is a center for vital ministries. Vincentian Academy, founded as Vincentian High School in 1934, is now a worldclass, coeducational Catholic high school. Vincentian Collaborative System, with headquarters on the McCandless campus, provides compassionate care at leading long-term care and rehabilitation facilities. Vincentian Child Development Center, next to St. Louise convent, offers loving, nurturing care that promotes the growth of the whole child. The Villas, just down the hill from
the convent, provides much-needed senior housing in the area. Sisters also generously allow McCandless Township to host various sports leagues at the back of the campus. Mary Jean Kubilus, SCN, talks with great enthusiasm about the ongoing vibrancy of the campus and the Congregation’s role in the North Hills. She became a Sister in 1949. At that time, she says there was, “nothing in the area except Vincentian Home and us (the convent and school) and another school just down the road.” Now, she gestures, look how much the area has built up — roads, homes, and businesses everywhere. SCNs Mary Clement and Mary Jean echo one another as they talk of how the Congregation is blessed to be part of such a growing and thriving Pittsburgh community. And as Sister Mary Clement reflects on her own 100th birthday in the not too distant future, she is grateful to have witnessed firsthand all that has taken place. She recently joined others in helping to plant a tree at St. Louise to mark 100 years in McCandless. SCNs also donated 100 cases of food to a local food bank. Life, says Sister Mary Clement, as a Sister and living on St. Louise campus has been a joy, and she encourages other women to follow in her footsteps. “It’s beautiful. Just come and try it.” TOP — Sisters gather for Mass on St. Louise Campus. SECOND — The Villas at St. Louise feature patio homes for senior living. Malebogo Gracious is the first SCN candidate in Botswana to be accepted into the pre-novitiate program there. As the SCN Congregation was celebrating Foundation Day on Dec. 1, the SCN community gathered at the Kanye convent for the Eucharistic celebration during which Malebogo was formerly accepted into the next phase of formation. Back at Nazareth, Kentucky, SCN Family members celebrated as Judy officially became a Candidate. Judy has been an Associate since 2005.

A Graced Encounter Six volunteers spent 10 days with the students and staff at an SCN ministry in Dharuhera, Haryana, India. Each volunteer went with expectations of what the experience would be like — and each one returned touched in a way that they could have never anticipated. The volunteers had heard that the children at this ministry come from broken homes — some have mothers who are commercial sex workers, and some of these children lived in the brothels in their youngest years. Other children were abandoned by parents who were unable to care for them for multiple reasons. The first child that the volunteers met was a girl that the police found abandoned on the streets. They had just brought her to Asha Kiran. She is six years old. “My heart ached immediately. I have a daughter that age and I couldn’t stop seeing my own child in her sad brown eyes,” shares Jennifer Hurst, one of the volunteers. The volunteers were inspired by these girls, who demonstrated such courage and resilience. They have formed a family at the ministry. Just as normal siblings, they have occasional disagreements, but they also support each other on a daily basis. As a yoga instructor, Jennifer taught yoga to the 60 girls during her stay. At the end of each class, she taught a positive body image mantra and they said, “I am beautiful.” Each session ended by chanting “Om.” “When we chanted, it was so beautiful the angels had to hear it. The sound went straight to heaven,” says Jennifer. Another volunteer, and employee of the SCNs, Pam Clark, has sponsored a child, Jyoti, at the ministry for nearly 10 years. Over the 5

decade, Pam has received letters and photos, but in the days and weeks leading up to Pam’s trip to India, she could scarcely contain her excitement at getting the chance to meet Jyoti in person. The two spent time together and Pam told Jyoti that her family has seen her photo over the years. She told her, “All my kids know who you are. All my grandkids know who you are.” Pam brought pictures of her grandchildren to share with Jyoti and promised to send photos of the rest of her family. During their conversation, Jyoti also shared with Pam that while she doesn’t have a father, she is lucky because she considers herself as having two mothers; both her biological mother and also Pam, who so faithfully stayed in touch and supported her from afar all these years. The days were filled helping with homework, organizing the library, playing games, teaching English, singing songs, working in the garden and preparing for a Christmas play. SCNs Lucy Puthukkatt, Agnes Tudu and Sujata Maliakal are forever grateful to the volunteers, Sister Lucy reflects, “They were companions besides being aunties, and didis (sisters), who played with the children, danced with them, laughed, and cried with them.”

PROMOTING THE DIGNITY AND EQUALITY OF WOMEN
In Kathmandu, Nepal, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are working to empower women. Though conditions for women have seen some improvement in the country, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the conditions facing many Nepalese women continue to be challenging. Violence against women is prevalent, especially in remote areas, and many are quite vulnerable to diseases such as HIV and AIDS. Ongoing conflict in the country has also left many women as sole providers for their families. In addition, the women’s literacy rate remains low, just 43.3 percent compared to men at 70.7 percent. With a mission of improving conditions for women, Sisters at Navjyoti Women’s Centre have been providing much-needed training and education for the past two decades. Women from all over Nepal receive training in tailoring, knitting, painting, and cooking during a six-month stay at the residence on-site. SCNs Aisha Kavalakattu and Philomina Bading oversee the operations of the center. Students are also taught home remedies, accounting, and leadership skills. After the program, most of these women are able to support themselves and their families. Many graduates have opened tailoring shops or found work knitting. Some farm, having learned better farming techniques and methods for raising livestock. The students of the Navjyoti Women’s Centre also form self-help groups. These rural groups give women a platform to make sure their voices are heard. The women offer support to each other and provide further skills training. Such groups are bringing whole communities together, women and men, in ways that have never before happened in the rural communities of Nepal. Women are speaking up and insisting their opinion in community matters be heard. They are making a difference by leading, instead of taking a backseat, or as in the past, having no input at all. Each year when the six-month program at Navjyoti Women’s Centre comes to a close, SCNs shift their time and energy toward running an empowerment program for female prisoners at the Kathmandu Central Jail. This innovative program begins with the similar skills training taught at the school — tailoring, knitting, painting, and cooking. The Sisters also organize legal aid to assist the jailed women so that they receive proper guidance and a possibility of early release. There are about 450 women in the Kathmandu Central Jail. The women who attend the skills training program also take classes on domestic violence and human trafficking, as many are victims themselves of violence or trafficking. The goal of both of these innovative programs is to raise the awareness of these women that human dignity is something that can’t be taken away and each person is created in the image and likeness of God. All have value, are worthy of great respect, and must be free from exploitation. In this way, and many others, the Sisters who minister in Nepal are changing lives and promoting the dignity and equality of women in society. 7

EMPOWERED FOR EMPLOYMENT: A LEARNER’S LIFE-STORY
SCN Family member Joseph Chakravarthy, former student at Asha Deepam, is now an instructor at the school and a businessman.
“I give all credit for my transformation to Asha Deepam,” says Joseph Chakravarthy, a successful small business owner and former student of the SCN school in Trichy, India. Joseph spent many years struggling with school until his family found teachers who recognized that he had learning differences, teachers who recognized his gifts. “But for their encouragement and confidence building, I would have been just another struggling learner trying to cope with this world,” shares Joseph. “My motivation came from Asha Deepam.” Joseph is now a computer instructor at the very same school that changed his life. A devoted SCN Family member, he takes very seriously his responsibility of motivating students at the ministry. Mrs. Roseline Francis, a member of the staff at Asha Deepam, still recalls the day Joseph entered the classroom in 2004. He had not received learning accommodations up to that point. His parents, like many other parents, did not want to accept that their son needed a different approach to learning. The young man was brought to Asha Deepam by his parents, who hoped that their son would finally receive much-needed support. Despite assistance from teachers at Asha Deepam, Joseph still struggled with his studies as he had little confidence in himself. Mrs. Roseline recalls how that period in Joseph’s life was a difficult one. “The biggest challenge for us was his behavior modification. His time in another school had influenced him so negatively that he sometimes became angry towards his peers; he would not socialize and he constantly ran away,” says Mrs. Roseline. “It took some time for us to help his behavior — to help him recognize that he could succeed.”
When Joseph continued to have doubts about being well-suited for a formal education, the staff at Asha Deepam, along with Sister Sabina Mattappallil, the former director of Asha Deepam, looked for alternatives to build Joseph’s confidence. They noticed his talent and affection for animals, like fish and dogs. Joseph was also quite drawn to technology, exhibiting a gift with photography, videography, and mobile repair, all of which he had taught himself. Still Joseph doubted himself and was discouraged. Sister Sabina, concerned that he might not have the confidence to pass the certification course for his studies, arranged for Joseph to take a break from school. He was expected, however, to regularly check in at Asha Deepam and to spend time with Sister Sabina and other staff members. In time, Joseph felt reenergized, refocused, and better able to cope with studies. He also had many dreams, dreams for starting a business including opening up a pet shop and an aquarium. Through hard work and determination and the support of family and members of Asha Deepam, Joseph’s dream became a reality. With the financial help of his mother, who sold her own jewelry to help Joseph finance his business, the pet shop opened and thrived. Joseph went on to expand, adding a computer center. Today Joseph is a successful businessman. His family, which at one time had worried about his future, is proud. Joseph, himself, continues to pay it forward, by helping his family and inspiring others. The boy who struggled with his studies and saw no hope in his future, is now a role model and leader.

Partnerships Flourish Around the World Collaboration and partnership have always been embraced by the SCNs. Two outstanding examples of this progressive mindset surfaced in recent months in provinces across the Congregation.
At Nazareth, Kentucky, dozens of SCN Family members attended a gathering on the Motherhouse campus in November. The event was organized by the SCN Office of Congregational Ministries (OCM) for representatives of SCN ministries in education, health care and social services throughout the U.S. The conference at Nazareth offered an opportunity for SCN Family members to come together and reflect on their call to serve SCN ministries. It was also a chance to experience the spirit at Nazareth, to attend Mass together with the Sisters, and to share best practices with one another. Vincentian Father Guillermo Campuzano was the keynote speaker. The adjunct professor from DePaul University shared many powerful stories that brought rich discussion around the theme “Partners in Mission: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Violence.” Directors and administrators of Congregational ministries were challenged to further weave the Western Province goal of “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Violence” into their ministries. “My hope is that it will spark engagement in the mission in a deep way,” says Michelle Grgurich, SCN, the organizer of the event and the director of OCM. Meanwhile in Mokama, India, Sisters and 9

community leaders are celebrating the opening of a new ministry, an endeavor that is also about empowerment and breaking the cycle of poverty. It is a collaboration between two entities — the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and the Social Welfare Department of the government of Bihar. The unique partnership in a wing of Nazareth Hospital in Mokama, made “history” as it opened its doors to provide shelter for 60 young girls displaced from their homes and families for various reasons. This collaborative effort between a Christian NGO and the government is a first in the history of the Church in Bihar. The government of Bihar noted the 67 years of outstanding service rendered by the SCNs to the people of Bihar, and neighboring states, through the hospital. In 1948, SCNs opened Nazareth Hospital to care for leprosy patients. Over the years, the hospital has been a source of care for various patients and populations. Palliative care is among the ground breaking programs the hospital currently offers, which is a first of this type of care in Bihar. In order to meet the pressing needs of the time, SCNs have now converted part of their facilities into dorms to care

for an underserved population, young women between the ages of 14–19 who are socially and economically disadvantaged. SCNs provide skills training as part of this ministry in addition to yoga, prayer, meditation and music lessons. Classes are offered including lessons in tailoring, spoken English, Hindi, health and hygiene. The girls are encouraged to face their challenges through counseling and coping skills. Visitors note the transformation of some of the participants currently in the program. They are now expressing a motivation to bring about a change in their lives, to return home, and to pursue further studies. Lilly Luka, SCN, has been appointed by the Bihar government as the officer in charge of the program and Sangeeta Bara, SCN, has been appointed life skills educator. More will be shared about this new ministry in India in a future issue of The Journey. www.scnfamily.org
Just Because We Love You!
“Just Because We Love You!” was the theme of a recent event honoring SCNs Mary Judith Seman and Dolores Ann Therasse. The Sisters were recognized for their contributions to St. Thomas A’ Becket Parish in Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania. Nearly 300 people attended the celebration, mostly parishioners. Both Sisters also had former students in attendance. Michelle Grgurich, SCN, described the celebration as a beautiful and well-deserved tribute to Sisters Mary Judith and Dolores Ann.
The Sisters have a combined 65 years of service to the parish, Sister Mary Judith as the parish social service minister and Sister Dolores Ann as the director of religious education and preschool. In her years at St. Thomas A’ Beckett, Sister Mary Judith has helped countless people, gently offering advice and assistance. Her ministry includes assistance to the economically poor like helping with rent and food; and visits to the sick or grieving. “This ministry is very, very important in these days. We can take Jesus to them and give them joy and peace.”
Sharing in Mission
Each year, SCN Family members at Nazareth, Kentucky, conduct outreach efforts for those in need including a yard sale and bake sale, a Thanksgiving food drive, and a Christmas Angel Tree program. Funds raised by the yard and bake sale help to provide loans or grants confidentially to SCN employees facing financial hardships. Employees, Sisters and other SCN Family members donate unneeded items each year for the yard sale, while the Food Service department provides treats for the bake sale. The Housekeeping department collects and arranges the items for purchase. The event, which is open to the public, attracts a large crowd. Each fall, a Nazareth campus food drive takes place. Employees donate canned goods and non-perishable food items which are delivered to the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank in Bardstown,
Kentucky. The Angel Tree program is another outreach effort. Held each Christmas, names and gift information for local children and adults in need, are placed on a Christmas tree in the Motherhouse. As individuals, groups, or departments, employees choose an angel from the tree. Employees gather for a gift-wrapping party before delivering the gifts in the days leading up to Christmas. The Nazareth Campus Service Mission Committee coordinates such activities as a way to engage employees in learning about and living out the mission of the SCN Congregation. Members include both Sisters and employees. “Our baptism calls us all to reach out to others,” says Committee Chair Earline Hobbs, SCN, “I feel once God has touched our heart we all have the desire to reach out to help our neighbor, right here at home and in the broader world.” Sisters of Charity of Nazareth • Vol. I 2015

Sisters of Charity of Nazareth • Vol. I 2015
www.scnfamily.org
Greatly loved and admired by people from all walks of life from former students to hospital chief executives, Dorothy MacDougall, SCN, is involved in a myriad of ministries from teaching English as a second language, to serving as a key advisor to leaders both within the Congregation and in the corporate world. In October, Sister Dorothy was recognized for a lifetime of service. Presentation Academy honored her with a 2014 Tower Award. The awards, presented annually, highlight the contributions of women leaders and recognize them as role models. Sister Dorothy, Presentation class of 1953, was honored for her legacy in education. Sister Dorothy keenly remembers her first day of school at Presentation. She had accompanied her mother across the Ohio River to the school in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. It was a Catholic high school close to her home in Southern Indiana. Quiet and not sure what to expect, her encounters with Sisters that day would make a lasting impact on her, as one day, she, too, would decide to become a Sister. Sister Dorothy, a respected leader in both education and health care, would also be elected Mother Superior of the SCN Congregation. As the Congregation’s superior from 1980–1988, Sister Dorothy not only oversaw the needs of the Sisters but was also instrumental in bringing about the creation of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Health System. She served as chairperson of the health system’s board of directors from 1984 until 1988, and was asked to serve an additional year on the board. She was vice president for Mission Effectiveness for St. Joseph Hospital from 1989 to 1994, and accepted a position as vice president of mission for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Health System. Later, when the Congregation made the decision to place the SCN Health System into the national Catholic Health Initiatives system, Sister Dorothy played a key role. She served on a committee to plan the integration of the SCN Health System into the larger health care entity. From 1999–2003, Sister Dorothy served as a member of the committee for the re-orientation of the mission of Nazareth Hospital in Mokama, India, the SCNs first ministry in India, which started in the 1940s. She spent 10 weeks in India giving leadership to the development of a plan for the re-orientation of the hospital to better meet the needs of the people served. While in India, she also worked with committees that were exploring the possibility of a partnership between the SCNs and the Medical Mission Sisters in the ownership and administration of another facility, Kurji Holy Family Hospital in Patna, India. This successful partnership has flourished. Sister Dorothy has a bachelor’s degree in education from Spalding College (now Spalding University), and her master’s and doctorate from Ohio State University. She studied theology and spirituality at Washington Theological Union, St. Meinrad School of Theology, and Harvard Medical School. Her early ministry was as a teacher in Bardstown, Kentucky, and she served on the faculty of Nazareth College from 1966–1971. She was director of education for the Congregation from 1972–1979, and provincial of the Southern Province from 1979–1980. She has served on a number of boards, among them, the board of directors of Our Lady of Peace Hospital in Louisville; the board of directors of Memorial Hospital, in Chattanooga, Tennessee; the board of trustees of the Congregation’s legal entity, Nazareth Literary and Benevolent Institution; the board of directors of Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Health System in Nazareth; the board of directors of St. Vincent Infirmary, in Little Rock, Arkansas; and the board of directors for Spalding University in Louisville.

SISTER BARBARA AN INSPIRATION
THROUGH THE YEARS
On a recent rainy day, Barbara Peterson, SCN, didn’t let the weather stop her as she made her way on foot, umbrella in hand, a short distance from her Highlands apartment in Louisville, Kentucky, to Nazareth Home to visit with the residents. Meeting families leaving the home, she stopped as each person passed her to say hello, and to ask how their loved one was doing. Sister Barbara, rarely, if ever, meets a stranger. Because of her youthful energy, few are able to guess her age of 90. Sister’s decades of ministry run the gamut from having been in education, to counseling, to writing a book of spiritual reflections, to organizing reunions for alumni of SCN schools. Just bumping into her in the hallway or sitting down for a short chat elicits any number of stories from her days as a teacher, principal, provincial, director, and author. For Sister Barbara it all began at St. Anthony School and St. Peter’s Orphanage. There she taught school during the day, and on nights and weekends, helped care for boys and girls living away from their homes for various reasons. It was a difficult time in the country’s history. Sister remembers a student who won a vocation essay contest but was unable to attend the banquet and awards ceremony because of the color of her skin. She implored that the student be allowed to attend but to no avail.
Sister Barbara has kept in touch with many of these children, who are now adults, and has come to know their children and grandchildren. “The children at the orphanage loved the Sisters and vice versa. Even on my 90th birthday I received greetings from five students that I have known 50 years,” she says. Isolated from the majority of her community and teaching grade school in the Kentucky mountains is where Sister Barbara worked in ministry next. She, and the two other Sisters, would walk to the homes of their students, to meet the parents and encourage them to be more active in the school and their children’s accomplishments. 13

After some time at St. Matthias School in Columbus, Ohio, and then Bethlehem High School in Bardstown, Kentucky, Mother Lucille assigned Sister Barbara to Nazareth College to be in charge of two college dorms and programming for students. “This was a whole new ball game for me. I knew nothing about dealing with college women,” she recalls. This ministry was especially challenging during the 60s, notes Sister Barbara, “everything in society and our culture was changing rapidly. All of the rules needed to be relaxed and the curfew hours extended. I was willing to listen to the students and change what had been in existence for years, even though I sometimes met opposition.” Sister Barbara is especially fond of telling one story from her days at Nazareth College.“One of the rules was that the students should not ride the elevator after 11:30 p.m. because they were to be in their rooms studying. On many days, I wondered if they knew the meaning of the word. One night I heard the elevator and I moved quickly out of my office to see who was disobeying the rules. When the elevator opened there was a life-size statue of the Blessed Virgin with a sign around her neck that read, “Religion is on the rise.” Of course the students were around the corner waiting to see my reaction — I laughed.” Later, Sister Barbara would serve as provincial of the Congregation for seven years. It was during this time that she became involved with the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) as president of the region. She says the experience stretched her thinking and she enjoyed meeting many great leaders from across the United States. Sister Barbara is also grateful that she has been able to travel the globe in her ministries, especially during her time in roles of leadership. She has also served as director of the retreat and conference center at Nazareth, and director of alumni for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. Looking back at 68 years of ministry, Sister Barbara is filled with awe and gratitude. “I loved each new ministry and I learned so much with each new adventure … My 90 years are winding down but I feel very connected to our Sisters, our missions throughout the world, and our commitment to justice issues.” To read more on Sister Barbara’s story and her service to God for the past seven decades, visit http://scnfamily.org/barbara.

Several SCN Family members took part in the Nuns on the Bus swing through Kentucky in October 2014.
NUNS ON THE BUS
Last fall, NETWORK’s Nuns on the Bus made stops in Louisville, Kentucky, as part of a 36-city bus tour. NETWORK, a national Catholic social justice lobby, was founded by 47 Catholic Sisters more than 40 years ago. The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth are proud that two of their Sisters, SCNs Rosemarie Chase and Margaret Hohman, are founding members. The primary goal for the Nuns on the Bus tour in Kentucky was to get a strong voter turnout for midterm elections, encouraging people of all income levels to get out and vote. The Nuns on the Bus are fighting back against the influx of big money in politics.
ST. MARY STUDENTS GRADUATE
NETWORK Executive Director Simone Campbell, SSS, told those gathered, “We’re on the road to say no. Our democracy requires us to stand up and say we are the voters. We the people will make this decision. We won’t be driven away by big money.” Julie Driscoll, SCN, and SCN Director of Global Ministries Joetta Venneman, PVBM, rode with the Nuns on the Bus through Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky. Other SCNs and Associates joined the bus along the way during stops at Shively Area Ministries, Americana Community Center and Hotel Louisville.

Dressed for the occasion, 26 five-year-olds proudly celebrated their graduation from St. Mary’s Pre-School in Lobatse, Botswana on Nov. 15, 2014. “Graduation Day” is always a highlight for the children and their parents. More than 300 parents, guardians, and guests were present, including many community leaders like Mrs. Kgosikwena, principal of the neighboring Primary School. In her address, Mrs. Kgosikwena spoke highly of the school and outstanding efforts of staff, parents, and guardians. She expressed gratitude and appreciation for SCNs Bibiana Kindo and Olive Pinto, for their sacrifice and commitment in providing a solid foundation in the early formative years of children. The program, presented by the three to five-year-old children, included the national anthem, singing, traditional dance, a Christmas play, a skit on Botswana Vision 2016, and the presentation of certificates to outgoing children. 15

TRANSFORMING LIVES
This year the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth mark 10 years at Marian English Medium School in the southern part of India. Situated in the farthest end of the Kozhikode District of Kerala, Anakkampoil, the area is approachable only by narrow, dangerous roads that wind through towering hills. Identified by the state government as one of the most remote places in the country, Anakkampoil is home to mostly migrant farmers. There is a high rate of unemployment with families living in impoverished conditions.
SCNs Brenda Gonzales and Susan Gatz, remember the first time they visited the ministry together after SCNs had been invited to take over the ministry. Sister Susan recalls how the facility needed work and the classrooms were dark. Sister Brenda shares that there was no convent or any place nearby for the Sisters to live so the Sisters slept in the library and cooked outside. What a difference in the school as it stands today! It has evolved considerably under the direction of the SCNs with 750 students now enrolled, and a staff of 32. When Sisters Susan and Brenda returned to the school for the first time in years in March of 2014, they saw a transformed ministry and students eager to learn. The teachers and staff have many dreams for the future says Sister Susan, “We met
with the whole faculty after a morning assembly. What a lively and dedicated group of women and men.” With the aim to provide an environment where holistic learning takes place, members of the SCN Family have been careful to create classrooms where students can enhance their cultural, social, and physical skills. The Sisters also provide emotional support through counseling, life skills training, and programs involving creative and critical thinking, meditation, yoga and prayer. Last March at the school’s morning assembly, Sister Susan says she couldn’t help but be inspired as over 400 students sat quietly in centering meditation for 10 minutes, led by one of the senior boys. “I was so moved that I stepped to the edge of the stage on which we were sitting as honored guests, and took a picture which I tweeted out at the time. Each morning at assembly they spend time in meditation. What a gift for the students to learn how to center themselves and draw on that inner strength as they move through their day and their life.” Sisters Susan and Brenda also recall a moment of shared humor following the assembly. Students gathered around the two, engaging the guests in conversation and taking pictures. One of the boys asked the visitors in English (which they are studying) if they spoke Malayalam
(the language of the state of Kerala where Anakkampoil is located). Sisters Susan and Brenda replied, “no.” He asked if the two spoke Hindi. Again they said, “no,” but added that they did speak Spanish. He asked them to say something in Spanish. “Hola,” said Sister Brenda explaining that “hola” means “hello” in Spanish. “The students went wild laughing and told us that “hola” in Malayalam means the leaf of the coconut tree,” says Sister Susan. “So, we told them, ‘See we do speak some Malayalam!’ It was a great multilingual moment.” Sister Susan also connected with many members of the staff, noting how faculty members especially, have been encouraged to take on roles in leadership and to engage in cross cultural experiences. Though challenging to reach, Sister Susan says the area is quite breathtaking with surroundings that are lush and lovely. “The school rises up out of the jungle,” describes Sister Susan. Having improved considerably these last years, many needs still exist to give the students as nurturing an environment as possible, like a safe playground where the kids can play and a school bus to provide transportation for the students. NEW MINISTRY
TAKES ROOT
IN BELIZE CITY
It has been just a little over a year since Carlette Gentle, SCN, started to work with the elderly residents living in the south side of Belize City in Central America. Sister Carlette felt a calling to establish an outreach ministry to the elderly and disabled. She shares the following insights about the program she is developing called LIFE — Living Independent in Full Existence. “Thankful for a planning grant from KentuckyOne Health, I started off by carrying out 200 surveys. Each survey had 19 questions focused around these major categories — housing, support systems, medical care, and food. I found that: • One in five respondents needed assistance with home repairs or basic household needs. • Approximately two-thirds of the survey respondents live with a family member, however, many did not receive basic support of companionship, adequate healthy food on a daily basis, or transportation to appointments.
17

• 74 percent of seniors surveyed stated they had medical problems. Major concerns included assistance with obtaining medical care and prescriptions. • Slightly less than half of those surveyed indicated that they did not have enough food in the house when they wanted to prepare a meal, and 24 percent of the seniors ate two or less meals a day. “Taking these statistics into consideration, I set out trying to create a program to meet the unmet needs of such a valuable population. Because I do not want to impose on the elderly what I think they need, I decided to have gatherings each month with them, to find out what they need. At these gatherings, we talk about pressing issues and what they want to do about it. It is also a time to meet new friends, gain support, share in laughter and fun games, as well as a healthy meal. “I also do house visits and collaborate with Mercy Kitchen to ensure the homebound are included in a daily feeding program in which residents receive a plate of food each day. “I will be hosting immersion groups from the United States as well, to help with house renovations, medical assistance, and overall help where it is needed. I will be collaborating with the Center for Community Resource Development (CCRD) to see if I can have a cooking class once a month for the elderly to enhance their knowledge and skills of healthy cooking. Collaboration will also be done with students from different schools to volunteer their time to assist a senior citizen. “‘This group is yours and I am here to assist,’ I tell my senior friends. And that is truly why I am here. One story comes to mind that recently happened. I went to visit one of my seniors and she was in a lot of pain. I asked, ‘What can I do to help?’ She replied, ‘I would love some Bengay to massage my foot. It hurts so badly it is hard to walk.’ The next day I showed up with the Bengay, and she asked me if I wanted to have a seat. We chatted for a bit, and I asked her if she wanted me to massage her foot. She said, ‘No, you are not supposed to do that.’ I replied, ‘Well, I am here and I really don’t mind doing it at all.’ She shared, ‘Well my nails need to be cut and I can’t get to them.’ After HOW TO HELP making sure that she was not a diabetic, I told her that I could cut There is currently an effort to them for her. She looked me in the eye, ‘You would do that?’ She got raise funds to purchase a van up, and with her small shuffled steps, she made her way to her room. for this ministry. To donate, I heard her crying. She was still crying when she came back. ‘Are you please visit http://scnfamily. ok,’ I asked and she replied, ‘Yes, but you should not have to do this org/donate. for me.’ I looked her in the eyes and smiled, ‘I really don’t mind at all. You are a gift to me. It is a blessing to have your friendship.’ She looked back and smiled, ‘You are a gift to me and God will bless you for all you do.’ “So yes, I am here to serve this population that is filled with wisdom, love and a deep trust and faith in God. They teach me.”

MEET A SISTER. BE INSPIRED. March 8–14
www.nationalcatholicsistersweek.org
Join us as women religious are celebrated in March during National Catholic Sisters Week(NCSW). NCSW is an annual celebration that takes place from March 8–14.
Catholic Sisters Week is supported by a grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and is held in conjunction with National Women’s History Month.
Created to honor women religious, it is a series of events that instruct, enlighten, and bring greater focus to the lives of these women. It’s a chance to recognize all that Sisters have done around the world, and also an opportunity for more young women to learn about women religious and to perhaps choose to follow their example. Last year the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth hosted prayer request tables at various ministries. Visit http://scnfamily.org for more information. If you have any stories or information about how a Sister changed or impacted your life, please send these to Diane Curtis at diane@scnfamily.org.
