Design Brief

For this Project students were given a country in need to design a safety shelter for based on the threats in that location whether it be natural or civil threats. We were asked to research a cultural element that holds a significance to our location to use as inspiration throughout the project. Embroidery is a large contributor to Afghan culture and can be seen in a number of aspects in normal life including tablecloths, mats, towels, curtains, animal trappings and clothing for both men and woman. With many different forms made by the various ethnic groups Afghanistan is able to produce a wide range of different styles and uses of embroidery. Afghan embroidery uses several motifs and designs based on the region or group it is produced by. These motifs can be the sun and stars; geometric shapes, foliage such as almond leaves, pomegranates, melon stalks, and flowers like tulips and pimento blossoms. In the designing of this shelter, I wanted to imbed some of the familiar patterns created from Afghan embroidery while designing against the main threat currently in Aghanistan, the Taliban. By incorporating these elements, I hope to give respect to the culture of Afghanistan while keeping it alive.
