MISSION Break the perception that fencing is an exclusive sport. Anyone can learn how to fence.
HISTORY
THE SPORT
Originating in Egypt, Fencing spread throughout Europe and then the world. The sport pits man vs. man in what used to be a fight to the death.
“THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO END AN ARGUMENT IS TO KILL YOUR OPPONENT” - Todd Dressell
RESEARCH
There are three different weapons in the sport. Each has its own style of fighting and target zones to score a touch.
Foil
Sabre
We started out our research phase by going to an actual club and taking fencing lessons.
Épée “THE ART OF USING THE SWORD SCIENTIFICALLY”
RESEARCH Throughout the next phase of research, we intervieved coaches, experts, ex- pro athletes and current athletes to find out more about the sport.
MEASUREMENTS Acceleration / Accuracy / Point Breakdown / Performance Peak Reaction Times / Rank / Progress
CULTURE INDIVIDUALISM ANALYTIC MULTICULTURAL TRADITIONAL INTELLIGENT STRATEGIC
ETHOS OF FENCING PHYSICAL CHESS BALANCE (MENTAL/PHYSICAL) RESPECT SPEED/ REACTION CONTROLL (BODY/EMOTIONS)
PROCESS As we interviewed people, we took our findings and placed it into a goal.
QUESTIONS How can we record physical measurements so the athletes don’t have to? How can we measure / train mental fitness? How can we keep the fencing community connected? What can more communication between athlete, coach, fan, and arena do to the Olympic experience? How can we make fencing more accessible to everyone? How can we track the journey?
PROCESS We then took the goal and made questions that would lead us into the ideation / concept phase.
GOAL Provide an intuitive and effortless way for fencers to gather metrics and track progress.
IDEATION Throughout our ideation, we solved for the athlete, coach, fan, and the youth of brazil; most importantly for their accessability to the sport.
Battery
The Nike Duel is a training device that makes the sport of fencing infinitely more accessible. No longer are athletes confined to training facilities. The community around the sport is connected with an extensive profile system. Fencing can now be part of people’s lives who don’t have the means to access facilities or equipment.

TRAINING
Nike Duel uses hologram projection technology to detect movement and turns any wall into a virtual training ground.
Using various colored targets, Nike Duel trains accuracy and reaction times. All metrics are stored and progress is tracked over time.
PROJECTION
PROJECTION
All drills directly relate back to skills needed in bouts. Precision and accuracy are tested with blade movement training.
Training drills can be used without any equipment, still developing reaction times and agility.
VIRTUAL STRIP Sensors record bouts in 3D and can be reviewed with detailed metrics afterwards.
DUEL SPLIT
VIRTUAL/LIVE TRAINING
Separate the peices, make the fencing strip and get ready for bouting with your partner or with a virtual fencer.
REVIEW Nike Duel is a self contained system that can be used to review statistics from training and matches at any speed or angle.
Detailed metrics reveal areas of improvement for the athlete. Progress is tracked in the user’s profile.
BRAZIL
Virtual Walls
During the 2016 Brazil Olympics Nike will provide a way for the youth of Rio to access fencing.
Virtual walls will feature the Nike Duel interface. Each neighborhood will be able to learn the basics of fencing and compete with each other.
ACCESABILITY
CONNECTING BRAZIL
Profiles are accessed through facial recognition software. People are able to take interactive lessons from the worlds best fencers.
A virtual fencing wall will be placed in each neighborhood, connecting a city in an exciting and innovative way.

BALANCE A creative, fun and tough sport. With only wind and a board, you are able to carve your way through the water and the air.
FLEXIBILITY
SUPPORT
GRIP Looking at existing products, the functionality was related to the different zones estabished.
FLEXIBILITY ZONES are identified by different sections early on in the design phase to ensure that function comes first.
SUPPORT GRIP
Through studying the need of windsurfers , I identified key zones that will allow greater flexibility, support, and grip where needed.
Straps are wrapped around the foot with calculated strengths and tolerances specific to the needs of each section of the foot.
As you tie the straps, the straps rotate and fit securely, the same way as a Chinese finger trap would.
Support straps: Pull the sting forward to tighten and align the straps.
Support straps wrap through the heel and underneath the ankle for a secure fit. Straps are fitted tightly in the mid-foot, but also allow for flex while you windsurf.
The straps will straighten up and act as support for your ankle.
Thin rubber suction cups grip the board as you windsurf. Flex straps move underneath the foot for a bendable, secure fit.
The herringbone pattern has extra padding to protect you from the rough boards straps.
A wide heel is designed to give more stability and improve balance to the windsurfer.
Future of Reebok
Inspired by John Wall’s athletic performance, I set out to create a purely functional basketball shoe.
JOHN WALL
SPEED Dribbling the ball down the court, Wall beats his opponents by simply taking two steps around them.
POWER Using his strength and lightness, Wall has the upward power to dunk over his opponents with ease.
AGILITY Constantly changing direction, Wall stops on a dime, making lateral and vertical movements to dominate the game.
Inspired by the attributes of John Wall, these images reflect his abilities on the basketball court and aid the evolution the of design. INSPIRATION
AGILITY The wind motion reflects John’s speed, not only in a straight line but in different angles.
POWER Working with his team, John is the leader while others support in formation.
SPEED One of the most feared animals, huge in size yet turning at the tightest angle to kill his prey.
IDEATION
FINAL DESIGN Sketching on a last helped finalize the design in terms of functionality and aesthetics. This has helped me reach the final design on the right.
GE Energy A 4 week group project that was published on yankodesign.com, Hong Kongs NEXT magazine, and over 30 other websites and blogs.
Self-Sustaining Producing its own energy through peizoelectricity technology, The intersections traffic cam, light poles, and traffic light are powered.
Charging Cross Walk. Vibrations from pedestrians and drivers are used to product electricity. GE blue Romark Reflective Road Marking Tape marks crosswalk.
A layer of hard Rubber is sandwitched in between the tape and the changing panels.
Piezoelectricity Piezoelectric panels produces electricity from the movements and vibrations of pedestrians and cars rolling over the cross walk. Piezoelectric technology
How does this concept work? 1. An Electric Road Charging pads set under the cross-walk collect energy from the vibrations of pedestrians and traffic moving across.
2. Piezoelectric Charging Microscopic crystals embedded in the charging pads give off an electric charge when agitated. Magnets amplify this and then channel it to batteries.
3. Lithium Batteries Piezoelectric charging panels channel energy to lithium ion batteries which then pipe energy to traffic signals, lights and cameras in the intersection.
