Tess:

Ben,

let us go outside for PE!

No

outside is very hot. Ben:

But last week we had PE outside. Do you remember what Mrs. Brown said in 4-H Club last week about Climate Change?

No, what did she say?

She said, “our climate is changing, that means the time is going to get very hot.”

So, what is going to happen to our garden? The plants are going to die, and we will not have enough food to eat.

Let us go and talk to Mrs. Brown to see what we can do to protect our garden

Lets’ Talk about Climate Change and how it can affect

Agriculture/ Farming

Teacher Mrs. Brown

Climate Smart Agriculture

Agriculture is the practice of farming. Farming is when a person plants crops and raise animals. This person is called a Farmer. The farmers plant crops to provide us with food and other materials such as wool for us to survive.

As the earth gets warmer it means there will be less rainfall than normal. This type of climate will affect the plants and animals. Some crops or plants cannot live or survive in a warm climate so they may die. Warmer climates will also affect the type and quality of food and the amount of food we will have to eat. During Climate Change we will see more insects and pests crawling around eating our crops leaving us with little or no food to eat.

We can practice “ClimateSmart Agriculture”.

Tess:

What is Climate- Smart Agriculture?

What is Climate-Smart Agriculture?

Climate-Smart Agriculture is a set of different activities that farmers can use to help them to better take care of their farms and animals so that people can get more food to eat. These activities help farmers change their actions and behaviours in agriculture/farming in response to the changing climate.

Some farmers may use simple or complex machines or technology on their farms. These simple machines will help to make the work easier and take less time, and the farmer will also get more food from his/her crop. Some machines may also help with providing much needed water during times of drought, while others may help with preventing the washing away of soil during times of flooding. Also, some farmers may consider switching to crops that can survive in the changing climate.

Kids! Now that you know a little about Climate-Smart Agriculture, let me tell you about being AGRICULTURE SMART

In the Jamaica 4-H Clubs we shorten the word Agriculture and say AGRI- and we join the word SMART and say AGRI-MART, which means Agriculture Smart.

44

Who is Agri-Smart?

An Agri-Smart person is someone who: 1. knows the things that can affect agriculture/farming 2. is ready to use new machines/tools and technology 3. is ready to try new foods 4. will do farming differently 5. is ready to be successful in a changing climate

Climate Smart Words Bingo

Instruction: Cut out each word from the bottom of the page. Drop each word into a small bag. Each player will need coins, stones or other material enough to cover each word. How to Play: One player will dip in the bag and call a word. Each player will find the word and use coins or stone to cover the words. Words can be arranged to form different letters for example: L, T, 4 corners or full house bingo or any other pattern of choice. The first person to form the selected letter or pattern will shout BINGO.

Vocabulary

Agriculture – is the practice of farming. It is the growing of crops and rearing of animals. Agriculture provides food and raw materials for us to survive.

Climate - is the weather conditions in a place overtime. It is also the weather that is expected at a special place at a special time of the year.

Drought- is when an area gets less rainfall than normal, over months or even years. If there is no rainfall for fifteen (15)days or more you can say we are having a Drought. Earth - is our home, it is the third planet from the sun. It is the only planet known to have air (oxygen), water (ocean) on its surface and, of course, life. Earth is the fifth largest of the planets in the solar system.

Environment - All our surroundings on Earth are called the environment. It is all you can see, hear, feel and smell. It includes Living things (people, animals and plants) and Non-living things. Living things rely on the non-living parts of the environment to survive.

Farm - is a piece of land used to grow crops and/or raise animals. People who grow these plants or raise these animals are called farmers. This type of work is called farming. Flood - is a rise of water that is on the ground with no place to go during or after heavy rainfall in a particular area.

Landslide - landslides happen when a layer of dirt or rocks moves from the layer below it down a hillside or slope.

Plants - are living things that cover much of the land. You see them everywhere. They include grass, trees, flowers etc. Plants do not move from place to place like people or animals do.

Rain Gauge - a Rain Gauge is used to measure the amount of rainfall at a place.

Recycle - is an activity to collect waste or garbage and use them to make useful products. Glass, paper, plastic, dead plants, fruit and vegetable scraps can be recycled through composting.

Temperature - tells how hot or cold a person or place is. Weather Temperature - tells how hot or cold a place is. A thermometer is used to measure temperature.

Volcano - a Volcano is caused when a mountain opens downwards to a pool of molten rocks below the earths’ surface. It is a hole in the earths’ surface from which molten rocks and gas becomes active. This is called Lava.

Summary

Jamaica and the world are affected by Climate Change activities. Climate Change affects our environment and natural resources and affects our way of life in many ways. Increased weather conditions expose us to new risks, which will affect all living things (people, animals and plants/crops). Climate Change also affects the amount of food that humans and animals will have to eat.

It is our duty to prepare for some of the likely climate change impacts to reduce their effect on plants, animals and humans. We can start by adapting to Climate-Smart Agricultural activities. Plant crops that can survive during hot weather conditions, save more water, protect our rivers, sea and gullies and eat more locally grown foods. Cubbies, Youth and Adults must become Agriculture Smart (Agri-Smart) to reduce the effects of weather/climate change on our crops/plants, animals and humans.

Plant a tree today!
