Transition House
Joel Overstrom Housing Project Clemson University M.Arch II Fall 2013
Haiku House To begin the project, we had to create a house from just 1 piece of 8.5" x 11" cardstock paper. This forced us to think about every use of material and every move we had to make to assembly the space. This relates to the haiku house idea because as with haikus, architecture can be both simple and powerful. From the start I wanted to create a space that expressed its public and private spaces through the architecture. Cut Out 1

To add another asď€ pect to the project, we also were paied up into communities. Each community had to think about how they would relate and how they would interact with each other. The different style of communities that had come throug in ours and the other groups designs really openned our eyes to how communities can work together.
My first attempt at designing the house on the given site was all about intergration. The house would be set into the ground, to be intergrated into the site. The house also had an open pavilion for the community to use as well as roof top gardens, to be intergated into the community. The center point would be around a myrtle tree, with its beautiful, pink flowers. However, this design was not practi cal, so I took some aspects that were good, such as the roof design and con tinued my design.

The site was on Douthit Hill, Clem Site son SC. This site has plans for a new complex for living and dining for the university, but looking at the site as more of a community space is an interesting and fresh point of view.

The third iteration of design reď€ ally influenced my final design. Between the organization of the roof and the floor plan and how they related, I know I wanted to continue down this road of design. 2 Yet, I also wanted to start to explore the idea of transition and movement through the house. With the roof reacting to public and private spaces, should the facade and even the structure? So, I conď€ tinued on to my final design to answer this question.

Housing is a program that is very two faced. A house needs to be private, secure, a sactuary against the outside world and its woahs. However, a house also needs to be public, a place where people can gather and live. These two faces are constantly being balanced in house design and needs to be addressed at its core values.

Renderings Keeping the idea of layers and the transition from public to private in mind, the house's shape and design reflect these two key ideals. The wood slat screen that surrounds the house is a visual indicator to what areas of the house are public and private. The more wood slats, the more private an area. The change in height in the house also gives a feeling of compression in the more private areas so that only people that know they belong there feel comfortable.
