PUBLIC LIFE OF PRIVATE BUILDINGS Award: Nominated for Master of Design Excellence Tutors: Mark Raggatt, Tim Pyke Semester 2, 2016, Studio Level 6
Exploring the hierarchy of public and private living. Is living in a private space, a bigger space, a better place? Is that better than living in a space with a lot of people? Most residences that explore communal living are housing projects that are for students, what if both the wealthy and poor share the same area? My project places both of these housing types together, which makes us question ‘which is the better quality of life’. Living higher up with a private courtyard, larger living areas, or living down below? Bigger communal interactions, with a lot of communal areas. The idea of activating courtyard and communal living vertically throughout the apartment and also exploring the different intimacies of communal living dependant on apartment types. Challenging the social hierarchy of living, which is better? eg. when you go to the footy would you rather be In the box, or the would you rather be In the crowd? 3

Centre for the Distribution and Repatriation of Apologies Tutors: Michael Spooner
A Centre for the Distribution and Repatriation of Apologies,The center is situated within jacks magazine. Many come day to day to be forgiven for there very sins, and in return you become a slave serving mother. Mother isn’t nice, she shrieks and demands for tulips everyday, it must be colourful, it must be tall and it’s petals can never wimp, it’s her only sign of hope. The centre can’t be forgotten its stretches beyond the site to the nearby river luring the innocent children to her den.

Scum was set up in a way that the precedents were the images you’ve curated, and site - jacks magazine was the artefact, Either your building was on it, in it, part of it, it was up to your own judgment for what the site was to you.

Achoring back to site
Beginning the studio with the building being the berm itself, using the tools from the drawing as a generative device to explore and compose in the 3d world. Throwing everything from drawing into the site. The site became covered in mess, hot mess. Then Exploring specific scene within the project, eliminating and differentiating what was useless and what could be explored further. Working in moments, then detailing certain object, gaining insight to the tool, and when it came to anchoring the tool set back to the site it became much more of a faster process. Sketches became another wat to anchor the design. Sketch during design process

REMINISCENT Tutors: Ed Carter Semester 1, 2015, Studio Level 2
Reminiscent is the exploration of complex junctions in Melbourne’s built fabric, completed via an objective research and mapping of contextual phenomena in the site of Williamstown which subsequently produces a generative formal morphology which evokes an architectural outcome .The gesture exaggerates an objective definition for the character of the site, to seek the ephemeral, the inexplicit and the experienced.Through site analysis the choosen essence of the site to be explored was corrosion.

FORM MONGER Tutors: Anna Jankovic, Anndre Bonnice Semester 2, 2015, Studio Level 4
Architecture can be seen as the translation of ideas into form and form into ideas. Form monger is a deliberate catalyst of the mashups of Studied precedents, and the site ‘testing grounds’ is the spurge of the effects from process. The site played minimal roles in creating the building, however plays a role in the elimination factor. Designing an Auditorium and music school for the site the ‘testing grounds’ behind the NGV. The process started by looking at precedents in only a flat perspective (plans and sections), then booleaning them creating unexpected formal elements. Growing inensively interested in the qualities of the Firminy church, the auditorium became the reminder of it’s momumental qualities. 15

The Boys Surface was a large influence of the structure of the auditorium. Having 3 ‘legs’ all connecting to the the central aditorium on the top of the building.

Bouverie office tower is located on the intersection of the two busy roads, Queensberry street and Bouverie street. Checker by concepts. The first Our office design encapsulatesChecked 3 main one being the 3m offset from neighboring building creating a artificial laneway. This Laneway allows Eastern light to enter office spaces, and with the laneway we wanted to connect back to the Melbourne cafe culture, placing out cafe facing the alleyway. The 2nd concept was the Stackable bike parking Bouverie Carlton 3053 system by eco-bikes, in japan. Its a 81-89 system weSt, have slotted within the design, Bikers can slot their bikes in and go down stairs to the showers via the staircase next to the bike parking system. The Third design concept was the Void balconies, Owner Renting the floors in 3 packets, 4 levels each packet. each floor has a stair connecting to a balcony. 19

CENTER PLACE ANIMATION
Team: Joyce Ho, Abbigail Ng
Cummings Alley leads north of Flinders Lane between Elizabeth and Swanston Street, sandwiched between Collins Street and Flinders Street. Our animation begins to document how one of the busiest Melbourne laneways changed and cultivated throughout time. We became increasingly interested in this particular laneway as it transformed into an important thoroughfare connecting Collins with Flinders Station, between the periods of growth Centre Court has embraced layers of Melbourne culture. Our proposition begins to question what could happen to Centre Place in few years. For the full video, please head to: https://vimeo.com/219268835
PROPOSITION
Axo of proposition, CentrePlace 2050
Melbourne is a growing city, our brief proposition is centered around the idea that Melbourne is on its path to being a hyper dense urban environment with the boom of the high rise, and the influx in students accomodating the city. How might that change areas like Centre Place, an area of Melbourne that has evolved into a tourism hotspot over the years? Will the further development of Melbourne city catalyze its growth? 22
HISTORY
Looking into the history of Centre Place and its immediate surroundings. During the 1800s, Centre Place was previously called Cummings Alley. During the end of the 1800s, Melbourne began to realise the potentials of connecting Collins with Flinders Station through Campbell Arcade. With this thoroughfare through Centre Place Arcade, the laneway was revitalised into not only a cafĂŠ precinct, but an arts precinct as well, making it one of the most iconic and visited destination in Melbourne.

CURRENT
Through the elevation drawing, we documented the east facade of Centre Pl during 3 Axo of history, Centre Place 1930-1975 periods: 1800s, 1950s, and current day.

LIGHT HOUSE Competition: YACL , 2015
Team: Joyce Ho, Matthew Liu,Tope Desina, Brad Chan, Neal Kaldor section of a private room
The Lighthouse has always been characterized as a timeless symbol of guidance in both light and darkness, its beacons, beckoning and bringing all those looking for refuge, Insinuating comfort, safety, and calm waters of a welcoming harbour, the Lighthouse simultaneously suggests adventure and dream. The resort targets the degradation process of the “ancient lighthouse, aiming to reverse the effects and enhancing the contextual elements. Encompassing the architectural criteria of function, economics, style and technology, the design applies itself to the site is a manner of preservation and consideration. Extracting influence from the lighthouse culture, the project embraces its primary use as a guiding beacon in its design considerations (individual cells emitting light). Acting as a concentrated beam towards the Sicilian coast, the resort accentuates the beauty of the Syracuse beaches whilst highlighting the unique landscape through its architectural implementations. ugh a combination of architectural design applications, 24

SUPERSTUDIO Competition: Super Studio 2015 Team: Bruce Oakley, Joyce Ho, Matthew Liu Award: 1st place in the state (Victoria), Nationally Shortlisted
SuperStudio is the largest Australian competition for architecture and design students, held by the Australian institute of Architects and Student Organised Network for Architecture. It is held every year in each state for 24 hours. The brief entails a need to ‘display’ or to integrate 5 chosen objects (uniquely Australian items) within the proposal in any way, place, theme or manner. ArteFactory encapsulates Australia’s current status quo, questioning it’s moral, ethical, historical and cultural stance in it’s affairs and ideologies. With the mission to design a ‘museum’ to display these selected iconic items, the design emphasises that our national identity cannot be contained through objects of evidenced status . ArteFactory does not document nor display importance but rather subverts the notion of icons and current affairs to explain the exegetical picture 26
These items are regarded as important artefacts in the Austrlian context. People view these objects as a important factor of shaping the nations Identity.
Faith bandler was an Australian civil rights activist best known for her leadership campaign for the 1967 referendum on Aboriginal Australians. She wore these ‘town’ gloves when addressing predominantly white female audiences.
‘A Windmill in the West’ tells the story of a lone soldier on the border of Australian and American territories. Initially it seems to be a story of nationalistic freedom but is then flipped to be a story of isolation, falsity and dismay.
A maverick in Australian history, lore and culture, Ned Kelly was a bushranger who dressed in homemade suits of metal armour. His acts still cause a divide in opinion, either celebrated as the Aussie ‘Robin Hood’ legend or a murderous croo
A common Australian street-cart dish, it consists of a traditional meat pie sitting in a bowl of thick pea soup. It was officially recognised as an icon by the National Trust of Australia is is available at very few locations.
The most famed Australian race horse, an enduring symbol of the Australian tuf, he won 37 of his 51 starts. Multiple attempts to shoot Phar Lap were made and mysteriously was poisoned in California days after an international race.
Artefactory, Section
Through the mass production of these items in the Artefactory, The immediate importance of these icons are the naivety of what is regarded iconic.
ArteFactory allows for upcoming events to add to the growing Australian identity without emphasising a few select objects. Diluting or even fueling the discussion for a materialised identity.
The ArteFactory brings relevant objects and events to the same playing field, iconoclastic in it’s intentions, chastising yet revering in it’s methods of dilution/ augmentation. Political and ethical controversies are brought to attention, Australian stereotypes are questioned and cultural agendas manufactured. 27
