My chosen object is a pocket umbrella. Three tools including, measuring tape, ruler and protractor were used to measure the dimensions and the angles of it.

Firstly, I opened the umbrella and erected it upside down so as to facilitate photographing it. Since the umbrella is too big for photocopying, so I chose to take photos. Then I measured the length of stretchers, runner and shaft manually by using the ruler and measuring tape.

PLAN Scale: 1:10 The angels between the stretchers, stretchers and shaft, stretchers and nylon are measured by a protractor. I measured the umbrella two times since the umbrella has two conditions, locked and unlocked. It is a bit difficult to measure the angles when the umbrella is erected, so I put it on the floor to make the job easier.

After I got all the measurements and angles, I started to draw the 1:10 plan and elevation and the 1:5 sections of both locked and unlocked condition.

The pocket umbrella is formed by a concave down surface. It is usually nylon that is attached to the stretchers arranged around a shaft which supports stretchers through a runner.

FIGURE 2 The top spring will be locked inside the runner in order to hold the canopy. (shown in figure 3)
The stretchers are flattened when the umbrella is in a closed condition.
FIGURE 3 The top spring is locked inside the runner.
When the runner is in the down position, the stretchers are flattened along the shaft. Exterior The umbrella is fully opened.
When the runner is raised, the stretchers are stretched in a circle around the shaft under the canopy.

Sketch Model
RECONFIGURED MODEL I have created a half lattern shaped model that experiments the negative space between the bones and skin. The relationship of the void inside and outside become interesting that it can either be a close or open system depending on the placement of the skin. Bones are connected in two points that we can control the distance between the them manually that it becomes an interactive model that does not have a restricted shape since it can be modified by anyone. I have used triangle as a pattern to make variations of the skin so as to create different shapes when viewing it in different directions.
8
RECONFIGURED MODEL MAKING PROCESS By using wire and greaseproof paper, I have resembled the structure and way of composition of the umbrella.
1. Wires are cut and prepared as bones in the model.
2. Greaseproof paper is cut as triangles to act skin in the model.
4. Skin is attached on the bones randomly to create different patterns.
3. Bones are connected at two points to create the half lattern shape.
5. When skin is attached on the bones, a half latterned shape model is completed.

How does this respond to your personal space?
Bones act as a base and create a hollow pattern of the ornament while the 3D dimond shapes are decorated in intervals on it. More layers covering the bones means more intimate. Only the 4 diamonds is covered because the area next to ears are more sensitive and will be opened when the person feel invaded. Furthermore, a 3 layered flower is placed at the forehead and will be opened layer by layer since it is the most crucial part of the head that some countries will consider touching peoples’ head as an impolite behaviour.

important part of our body
How does this respond to your personal space? The neck part of the garment has the highest number of bones to represent it is the most personal part of our body. The shape of it shows that it protects both the neck and head since it is the most intimate place. As for the sleeves, the shoulder part expands the most and got a higher number of bones when compared to the end, so that people cannot come closer once they touched the garment. On the other hand, I think the personal space is getting smaller when it is going downwards so I designed the sleeves in a descending way.

The layers will grow when the person feel invaded and insecure
How does this respond to your personal space?
The more layers of that area means it is the most intimate part. Chest has at least three layers covering it and it grdually spread out to the side and the back. The toppest layer continues to grow close to the ears and then extending to the back. I think the part from ears to shoulder is a vulnerable area so I choose to cover it so that it can’t be seen or touch easily. While reaching the back, the layers reduces and stops which I think the back occupy less personal space than the front.
