planning your session Do you dread planning a photo session? Does it feel impossible to get everyone happy, looking nice, and smiling all at once? I’ve got good news …
Your session is going to be relaxed and fun!! As a mother of two young boys believe me when I say I know how you feel! It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the planning of the outfits, choosing the perfect location, and keeping everyone happy long enough to at least look happy in the photos. But don’t worry, I will be here to walk you through every step of the way and to make your session a relaxed and enjoyable experience. After several years of photographing children and families I’ve learned a secret: the best photos happen when families play and have fun together, when they are allowed to move and be themselves!
! Here are a few tips as we begin to plan your session: !
- When we are deciding on a location we’ll choose a place where you and your children will be comfortable and have room to move and play. This could be your backyard, favorite local park or nature trail. Wherever it is we will be sure to capture your family being yourselves and having fun!
! - When choosing outfits refer to the “What to Wear” section of this guide and remember it’s likely you can choose right from your own closets! !
- Stressed about convincing your child (or husband) to give the perfect smile? Don’t worry! I really don’t expect your children to “pose” for the camera,
!
at least not for long. Remember, the more we play, move, and have fun during the session, the more genuine those smiles will be. I’ll encourage you to kiss, hug, tickle, be silly, jump, and move. Play and interaction always brings out the best smiles!
- Keep the bribery at home. Most likely we won’t need it, and if we do, I come prepared! I’ll have a special something for each of your children after the session… if they are not cooperating that usually does the trick!
newborn session
Welcoming a new baby is a very special time in a families life that should be beautifully documented. I love photographing the early newborn days in a lifestyle fashion. I find that the most compelling and cherished photos are those in which a new baby is being cuddles, swaddled, fed, held, bathed, and enjoyed by his family. While we will do some posing, for the most part I will encourage you to interact with, rather than pose with your baby. Here are a few tips to insure a great newborn session:
!
A simple, minimal wardrobe is best for a newborn photos. Solid and neutral colors for the parents and siblings helps to keep the focus on the new baby.
!
It is best to have the photo session between five and ten days of life. At this stage they tend to be more calm and sleepy and it’s usually before newborn acne sets in. However, since I photograph newborns with a lifestyle approach, I focus more on photographing the baby with his family and less on posing. This means that if the baby is a little older and needs to be held or fed we can just follow the babies lead and photograph his regular routines. These little moments are precious and will remind you of your daily life as a parent of a newborn baby.
!
Some parents prefer to wait until their baby is a few months older and a bit more settled. This can be great for getting images of the baby awake and wide eyed. I consult with all of my clients on what their particular desires and needs are so we can plan accordingly. If older siblings are involved we will plan to include them in photos at a time when they will be agreeable and not too hungry or tired. I encourage siblings to interact with the baby and to be themselves, rather than pose.
!
I love to incorporate anything that is special to the family such as a bassinet, quilt, or outfit. Please plan ahead so we will have these special items ready for the session.
!
A newborn session should be scheduled during a time of day when your home has a lot of natural light coming in. I encourage you to take note of the times of day and the particular rooms in your home where there is the most natural light. But don’t worry if there is not a lot of natural light in your home. I have equipment that can accommodate any lighting situation.
!
When possible, it is best to give your baby a bath (or sponge bath) the morning of the session and apply some lotion to reduce flakiness. Please prepare your home as much as possible by tiding up. I may also, with your permission, move items that will be distracting in photos.
what to wear - the DO’s and DON’Ts Deciding what to sear for your session can be a huge chore. Following these simple tips will help you choose the perfect outfits for your upcoming session with ease! Don’t forget to check your closet first.
!
DO - choose a color these based on where you want to hang your pictures. If your planning on a living room display and your room is decorated in earth tones then choose colors that will coordinate. DON’T - Match. Leave the jeans and white t-shirts at home and instead choose a color scheme and coordinate.
!
DO - Layer. The more layers the better! Sweaters, scarves, jewelry, and blazers create visual interest and add texture though out your pictures. They’re a great addition. DON’T - Be afraid of patterns. Plaids, polkadots, florals, and stripes can be overwhelming when all paired together but mixing in a few patterns here and there is another great way to add some interest to your photos.
!
DO - Pay attention to your shoes. Shoes matter! A pair of Nike sneakers mixed in with cute boots and dress shoes can be an eye soar in your pictures. Try to stick with neutral shoes for the whole family. DON’T - Wear logos. As much as shoes can be an eye soar - so can a big logo across a t-shirt. Try to steer clear of sports or brand logos or saying across the front of a shirt. Again, this steals attention away from the family and brings the eye right to the shirt.
!
DO - Dress comfortably! Especially for Mom, pick something you love and build your wardrobe around that. Wear something your comfortable sitting, standing, running, and playing in. You’ll thank me later! DON’T - Over think it! You want your family to look like your family so don’t stress so much about the outfits. Be sure to have fun with it!
We truly enjoyed our session with you! The pictures are way better than any of our expectations, and you brought out a beauty in my family that I didn't know we had! Joy Huber Photography will be the only name I recommend to anyone! - Phillip C.
after the session
Your session was great, but things are about to get even better! About two weeks after your session we’ll have your Reveal Night (we’ll schedule this at the same time we schedule your session to make sure you see your images as soon as possible). On your Reveal Night you will see your images for the first time.
!
That night I’ll come to your home (that’s right, no babysitter!) and show you a custom slide show of your images. We can even play it on your television so you can see them large!
!
After you’ve experienced the slide show you’ll have some time to sort through all of your images, choose your favorites, and look at all of the product samples. Seeing everything in person will really give you a sense of what products are most important to you. My favorites are canvases and albums!
!
I have an iPad app that allows you to preview your images on your walls in order to choose the very best size for your space. My clients find it so helpful!
!
The collections on the following page have been created to give you the absolute best quality products for the best value. Collections are available exclusively on Reveal Night and can be paired with a la carte purchases if desired. If the collections don’t fit your exact needs, all products can be purchased a la carte and are offered at a special price on Reveal Night!
!
The goal of Reveal Night is to finalize your order so we can get your prints and products to you as soon as possible. To help make this stress free it’s a good idea to look through all of the products and collections so you can go into it with an idea of what will work best for you. Once you’ve seen your images that may change, but I encourage my clients to think specifically about how they want to display their images and to choose a particular space on their wall in advance.
!
When all of the fun of Reveal Night is over, you’ll have a short wait before you’ll have those images in your hand! Digital files purchased will be made available in 48 hours and you can expect to have your prints and products in your hands in 3 - 4 weeks. When everything is in we’ll schedule a time that I can hand deliver everything to make sure it gets there safely!
