Movie Review Featuring Queen Latifah
& Dolly Parton
Joyful Noise Oscar® nominees Queen Latifah (“Chicago,” “Hairspray”) and Dolly Parton (“Transamerica,” “Steel Magnolias,” “Nine to Five”) star in Alcon Entertainment’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Joyful Noise,” a funny and inspirational story of music, hope, love and renewal. The small town of Pacashau, Georgia, has fallen on hard times, but the people are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition. The choir has always known how to sing in harmony, but the discord between its two leading ladies now threatens to tear them apart. Their newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), stubbornly wants to stick with their tried-and-true traditional style, while the fiery G.G. Sparrow (Parton) thinks tried-and-true translates to tired-and-old. Shaking things up even more is the arrival of G.G.’s rebellious grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan). Randy has an ear for music, but he also has an eye for Vi Rose’s beautiful and talented daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer), and the sparks between the two teenagers are causing even more heat between G.G. and Vi Rose. If these two strong-willed women can overcome their differences and find a common voice, they—and their choir—may make the most joyful noise of all. Starring with Latifah and Parton are Keke Palmer (“Akeelah and the Bee”), Courtney B. Vance (“Extraordinary Measures”), Jeremy Jordan (Broadway’s “Rock of Ages”), and Kris Kristofferson (“Dolphin Tale”). Rounding out the main cast are Dexter Darden, Angela Grovey, Paul Woolfolk and Jesse L. Martin. 5 iShoutforJoy Magazine
Todd Graff (“Bandslam”) directed “Joyful Noise” from his original screenplay. The film is produced by Oscar® nominee Michael Nathanson (“L.A. Confidential”), Joseph Farrell, Catherine Paura, and Oscar® nominees Broderick Johnson and Andrew A. Kosove (“The Blind Side”). The executive producers are Timothy M. Bourne, Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere, with Yolanda T. Cochran and Steven P. Wegner serving as co-producers. The behind-the-scenes team includes cinematographer David Boyd, production designer Jeff Knipp, editor Kathryn Himoff and costume designer Tom Broecker. Five-time Grammy Award winner Mervyn Warren composed the score. The musically driven story also brings together the sounds of gospel, pop, country, rock and R & B with memorable songs, performed by the cast, from a wide range of artists, including Michael Jackson, Usher, Chris Brown, Paul McCartney, Sly & the Family Stone and Stevie Wonder. Dolly Parton also wrote original songs for the film, including “Not Enough (Love)” and “From Here to the Moon.” Alcon Entertainment presents a Farrell Paura Productions/O.N.C. Entertainment Production, “Joyful Noise,” being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
The film opens nationwide on January 13, 2012. iShoutforJoy Magazine

I
n 1989, the Lord began to impress upon my heart , about the need to pray
and prayer itself. I began to search and listen to people who practically knew how and then one day, while I was reading the bible, I came across Hebrews 4:16 and all of a sudden , I gained the understanding that I needed to invest in prayer. How? The scripture quoted says,
Right away it dawned on me that like the ants in Proverbs gathered food for a rainy day, I was to build a spiritual storehouse and pray all that I could pray until I could pray no more, because the scripture says , “there is going to be a time of need, where you might not be able to pray like you used to and the prayer that I have stored in that storehouse would work for me and on my behalf. iShoutforJoy Magazine

Tips for a Successful Prayer Life Continued
It is like saving for your retirement, you know that what you’ve saved is what you will have to take care of you in your time of need. So from the understanding that I gained from that scripture , I started looking for other avenues to develop steps to achieve that purpose and here’s what I did:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Read and Study the Bible Rise up Early to Pray Praise and Worship the Lord Intercession and Prayer Warfare Prayer of Supplication Thanksgiving
1.) I read and studied the Bible more, knowing that before you can be successful, and effective in prayer, you have to be a student of the word. So each morning or through out the day, I read five chapters of the Bible. 2.) Rising up Early – In Job 1:5 – Job prayed for his children early in the morning, In Mark 1:35 – Jesus rose up early before the light of the day and prayed, In Ps 63:1 – David said,”…early will I seek thee” iShoutforJoy Magazine
30
“Study to Show thyself approved onto God…” 2 Timothy 2:15 I studied the word for myself, not to preach to anybody but myself. 3.) I learned to both praise and worship the Lord out of my Heart (this nation honors me with their lips but their hearts are far away from me). I made sure, I don’t just say words or sing a song. Praise is not the same as worship. Praise is when you proclaim your gratitude for all that He has done and will do in either words or in songs. Worship is affirming God’s lordship over all things and asking Him to reign over all things, either in words or in songs. 4.) Intercession and Prayer Warfare – During this time, I ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide me to pray for the needs of God’s kingdom to reign over all kingdoms, that His will be done according to the purposes of His heart, for churches, pastors and all ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ, that the Lord will protect those who are being persecuted in other countries because of the gospel. God impressed it upon my heart that He depends on the prayers of believers to establish His purpose in the world. So it became my business to be a partner with Him. What a great privilege and what an honor to be a partner with God. 5.) I also pray for my personal needs and they are miraculously supplied. During this time of prayer, I spend time praying in tongues, that my spirit may be energized. This gives me holy boldness. I become fearless and can confront any demons and their activities anywhere as the Lord reveals them. 6.) After I have finished with all of my requests and petitions to God, I enter into praise and thanksgiving for hearing me and honoring His word. It is my utmost prayer that the Lord by His Spirit will lead and guide you the same way He has led me to fervently pray. All the Best, Pastor Kofi

Keeping the Romance Alive Continued 2 Question: Dear Harriet, My marriage has gotten stale and lacks the excitement we once shared with each other. We seem to be drifting further and further apart every day. How can we go back to the passion we once shared? Mary from Washington, DC.
Answer: Dear Mary, Happy and healthy marriages take a lot of work. The effort involved with deepening the connection between the couple can be enjoyed by both husband and wife thus developing a close intimate bond unlike any other kind of relationship. Married couples should continually find ways to spice up their relationships in order to keep the marriage “fresh” and “hot”. This is usually a challenge for most couples because of jobs, children, social and family obligations. Although they may desire to have a passionate love life with their spouse, busy lives tend to suck the air out of the marriage. After a while, couples tend to simply exist in a shared living area. Intimacy, leisure, and simple fun are replaced by the business of everyday demands of life in general. You have to stay consistent in making your partnership enjoyable and entertaining. If you do not work on improving and spicing up your relationship you may find yourself fantasizing to be elsewhere with someone else. I hope after reading this article married couples will see the importance of going back to what caused them to fall in love in the beginning of their relationship. iShoutforJoy Magazine
41
To start you must, maintain your friendship with your spouse with open and honest communication. Making time to be alone with each other must be a priority. Agree to not discuss the kids or stress related topics such as in-laws, work, money or bills, but use the time to really connect with each other as friends and lovers. Express genuine appreciation and gratitude for the things your spouse does; compliment and flirt with your husband or wife. Is your marriage in a rut or becoming stale? Do you need to spice your relationship up? No matter how many years you have been married, monotonous routine can easily douse the romantic fire in any marriage, so change things up with creative surprises. Fuel the fire that keeps marriage alive and passionate, and it will sizzle. Plan a romantic rendezvous. Add excitement by making the encounter something you wouldn't normally do or someplace you wouldn't normally go. It doesn't necessarily have to be spontaneous. Never mind how old is your marriage, always try to spice it up with small gestures to let your spouse know that the fun and exciting person they fell in love with is still there and ready to come out to play. It doesn’t matter if you have been married one or thirty years, married couples should never stop courting each other. Date your mate on a regular basis. Make sure your spouse knows they are the most important thing in your life. Undoubtedly, relationships constantly change and if you keep doing the same stuff it will be boring. So be interesting, imaginative and fill your life with passion, the spice of love and romance. Praying for your marriage, Harriet Harriet is an author, life coach, motivational speaker, and a TV host & radio personality. Harriet and her husband of 30 years, Anthony are certified marriage workshop facilitators. They speak at marriage workshops and conference throughout the country.

Why is it appropriate to set aside a special time each year to give recognition and affirmation to our clergy and their families? How are their needs and circumstances different from those of carpenters, grocers or dentists? One distinction lies in the nature of the service these leaders provide. God has entrusted to them one of the most precious of assignments—the spiritual well-being of His flock. When a pastor becomes ineffective, the very souls of his or her parishioners are endangered. When eternity is in the balance, we should all be concerned. Another problem lies in the expectations placed on pastors. Numerous surveys have found that a very high percentage of pastors feel pressure to be the ideal role model of a Christian family—which is impossible, of course. As a result, four out of five pastors feel their families are negatively impacted by unrealistic expectations—whether self-imposed or congregation-imposed—and that ministry is an outright hazard to the health of their families. Indeed, the “pedestal” is not all it’s cracked up to be. As pastors and their families try to please the God who called them to ministry while also trying to meet the expecta- tions of their congregations, one result is dangerous stress. In fact, 75 percent of those surveyed reported experiencing a significant stress-related crisis at least once in their ministry.
The good news is that we can make a difference! Clergy Appreciation Month is an attempt to counter the negative erosion in the lives of our spiritual leaders with positive affirmation.

How To Maintain A Monogamous Relationship with Food
By Dr. Alice Freeman iShoutforJoy Magazine

Health
Most meals consist of a protein, a carb, and fruit or vegetable. This equation is fine, but not all foods are meant to be combined that way. In fact improper food combining attributes to indigestion, gas, bloating, weight gain, self-toxification and even colon problems. For the best possible digestion and utilization of food, we need to observe certain rules in the way we combine foods within a meal to achieve a pH balance (acid/base). Protein foods require a highly acidic environment for digestion while carbohydrates (starches, sugars and fruit) and fats require a more alkaline(base) medium. Anytime two or more foods are eaten at the same time that requires opposite conditions for digestion, the digestive process is compromised.
Alkaline forming foods Figs, Celery, Peaches, Soybeans, Cucumbers, Apples, Lima beans, Cantaloupe, Grapes, Apricots, Lettuce, Bananas, Spinach, Watermelon, Turnip, Potatoes, Raisins, Pineapple, Brazil Nuts, Almonds, Cabbage, Coconuts, Carrots, Grapefruit
VS Acid forming foods Meat, Most nuts, Veal, Eggs, Grains, Lentils, Organ Meat, Rice, Peanuts, Chicken Combining foods from the acid group with foods from the alkaline group neutralizes your system. They will begin to fight each other for digestion. What happens is that food is night completely digested and essential nutrients are not absorbed. Digestion takes longer, which means food starts to rot and ferment causing problems for you. A Date with your Plate – Continued 2

This concept seems simple enough, yet for Christians it seems to baffle us. We go running for the pews; searching for safety from the big bad monsters of transformation, diversity, and dare I say it … work!
Contextualization for Christians means: taking the gospel to the people where they are. The New Testament church was founded on the principles found in Matthew 28:19-20. “Go and make disciples of all men …” It stands to reason that the lost will not come knocking on your door asking to be saved because they heard from Suzie down the block that you were the Christian house in the neighborhood. We have been ordained by God to go to the people for just that reason. Sinners do not know they need a savior until you present them with one. If the lost are unaware of the fundamental truths of God and why they need Him, they will continue to walk in the darkness of ignorance. We who have been called to the light must shine it bright for others to see. The scriptures do not tell us to preach only when, where, and to who it feels comfortable; but to ALL men no matter who they are. Today’s Christian is not the only one who has a problem with this. Since the foundation of the church there have been those who try to separate and categorize the level of God’s favor. Why is it that Sunday morning church is the most segregated place on earth? Why are there so many denominations refusing to help each other when we supposedly all believe in the saving grace of Jesus? Why are there not more outreach ministries? Why are churches dying because we cannot reach our youth?

Contextualization does not mean water down or change the message, but tweaking how we present it. In today’s ever moving world of smart phones, fast food, and internet sensations we are coming less and less effective with the “back row Baptist” mentality (I attend a Baptist church and I am a singer so when I tell you I am preaching to the choir … I’m the choir in the Baptist church). Don’t get me wrong I whole heartedly believe you can be saved by the Romans Road, and a good old traditional stanza of “Old Rugged Cross” can still move me to tears at the age of twenty-six. I grew up on hymns and sitting in the pew every Sunday so I can appreciate the way things have always been done, but I also know many (young and old) who have not grown up with the traditions. We should not change for the sake of change and should still incorporate our traditions into what we preach, but have you ever stopped to think about why you have those traditions? In Matthew 7:1-23 the Pharisees were condemning the disciples because they were not adhering to the strict traditions of cleaning before eating. Though I advocate washing your hands before eating … the point behind this scripture is that the religious leaders were so focused on the outward appearance of man and had twisted the traditions so much that they were corrupt in the matters of the heart. Their “worship” had gone from a relationship with God to a performance in the art of holiness for all to see. Are we too busy berating people with the rules of church to invite them into the true joy of church? When did we trade the love of Christ for the love of self-praise? When did our youth start falling by the wayside because we call Christian rap from the devil? If this generation is moved by rap, make it about Jesus. If this generation is moved by online media, tape sermons and upload them to your website. Paul says in I Corinthians 9:19-23 “I have made myself a servant to all that I might win more of them… I have become all things to all people that I may save some.” We are to be the light that burns with a longing to help others.

. We have to not just step out of the box, but throw the box out of the picture and seek new ways to reach a world going to hell.
We are ALL formed in the image of God. We are ALL from the seed of Adam. Jesus came to save all men. If the Lord of all, the maker of heaven and earth, the savior of the world can die for a man and look upon him with no judgment; who are we to judge him by his past or look down on him because of what he wears. We walk around thinking we are just a little bit better than others, though we would never admit it. The truth is there are two types of sinners: lost sinners and saved sinners. Another reason we do not go and win others for Christ is because we are afraid to venture out of our comfort zone. What will people think? What if they reject me? I am not a good enough Christian to go and lead someone to Jesus? II Timothy 1:7 tells us “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind.”, and Romans 5:8 says “… while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.” We are not called to save, we are called to tell! Jesus didn’t say to clean up your mess before you can go teach. We are to tell by any means possible. Taking the gospel on the move and to the streets is what God commands. Yes, Jesus taught in the temple, but His main ministry was among the people who were outcast. I implore you to look at each person as not someone you could potentially hang out with so you will invite them to church, but as a lost soul dying and going to hell. The last selfish act we should perform is our salvation. From then on we are to be servants for God, proclaiming His message of hope and salvation to anyone who will listen. If that means getting out of your comfort zone and doing something outrageous so be it!

Faith, Fans, and Sports By Arthur Lee Thompson IV Faith in Sports a Reflection Back in Time: The first time I encountered faith and sports together was my senior year playing varsity football at Huguenot High school. I was starting at running back. I was scared and excited. I wanted the fame and everything that came with being the “man. Girls knew I was playing football. It was the time of my life to live it up. I would think to myself, “Man maybe I could sign autographs for the fans.” Well the first scrimmage I did okay. The next scrimmage, I sprained my ankle badly and was out of action for most of the season. During this time, there was an organization called Athletes for Jesus. Our head coach Richard McFee, scheduled them to come to our practice once a week. Former VCU basketball great, Monty Knight was our spiritual teacher. We met with him before practice. We endured a lot during that season. One of our players was possibly going to be shot. We lost some key players during the season. Personally my season was done. However, I learned a great lesson. GOD is real. I learned a feeling of calm when Mr. Knight came to our practices. I did not realize it was GOD’s presence that can make all things still. I learned to embrace myself in his presence when I competed. I realized how GOD can use any person to move people to do great things. At this time Mr. Knight is currently in prison for his part in a financial investment scandal. However, his time with me made a lasting impression. I have learned to not follow the man but follow the GOD in the man.

Sports What’s up in Sports: Last time I talked to Michael Vick he wasn’t the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. Now he is after a masterful performance last year. The Eagles have started off slow, can he and the so called “Dream Team” get their swagger back. Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys seem to be the best team at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. At this point they need to change the phrase from “How bout them Cowboys” to “How not bout them Cowboys.” ☺ The defending champion Green Bay Packers seem to be turning the clock back to the Vince Lombardi days. Can anyone stop them? NBA wise…There has not been a lockout since 1999…The NBA needs to get it together quickly like the NFL…or they may take a popularity dip like the MLB Speaking of the MLB…The playoffs are hot. I am just mad that my Yankees bit the dust. Oh well it is always next year. GOD BLESS! Catch you next time.. Canton Jones on how the Church can reach the Youth?
Youth Talk
Canton: For one, a lot of times, parents, pastors, preachers, bishops & leaders, we feel like we already know what the young people need. But, in any restaurant, when you sit down the waiter or waitress will not bring out a meal until you’ve made your order. A lot of times we give young people what was relevant to us or what we feel they should have. It never works. Why? Because you didn’t take their order. Their issues are different than your issues. We need to understand that, these are the beats that they are playing now, not those.
they are playing now, not those. You can’t just wear jeans and church shoes and try to reach the young people. It doesn’t work, unless they’re hot. The thing about is that the young people, their swag is different. Sometimes we’re so lazy and don’t want to work with the youth. Often times the young people are not giving to the ministry. It takes faith for the man of God, to the church to preach to those people and make investments. As an African American community, we don’t like to invest because there’s no quick return. And that’s the same thing we do with our youth. We don’t like to invest in them because there is no quick return. But you have to be able to invest in them. The bibles says to train up a child in the way that he should go. You might not see it right away. We have to figure out a way to take their order. Find out what they need and what they like and then we can be more effective for the young people. people iShoutforJoy Magazine
