BeforeYouGo, StayfortheNextChapter

Tofurthertheinsulttoher,Ididnotcome anywhereclosetomeetingexpectations, especiallywhenmyfirst-gradeteachertoldmy motherIwasborderlineretarded,anacceptable termbackintheday.Mymotherwasdismayed, disgustedanddeterminedthatshewouldnotbe shamedinsuchaway.

Attemptingtofindacceptancefrommypeers,I didmybesttostifleanythingaboutmethatwas notliketheothergirls,tobecomeacookiecutter oftheothers.Ifailedatthat,too,butitstarted meonthepathoffindingme.

Ilearnedhowtocomebackfromafailureand getthroughthenextday,evenifthewholeschool knewofmyfailureand,iftheydidnot,my mother(asateacherinmyhighschool)ensured theydid.Ilearnedhowtokeeptryingand,even harder,whenitwasOKtowalkaway.

Fartoooften,thosewhostandontheedgeof endingtheirstoriesfeelsohorriblyisolated, aloneandevenashamedfor“notbeingableto handleit.”ThismonthisSuicidePrevention Month,atimetofocusonwhatwecandotohelp eachother,itispartofwhatbindsustogether.

Eventhoughmybirthwasplanned,whenI arrived,mymotherrejectedmeonsight.She usedtotellmethestoryofhowshecriedwhen shesawhowuglyIwas.

JustasrecentTVcommercialshavepointed out:Wegethelpifwehaveabrokenbone,aheart attackorevenneeddirections.Whynotfor mattersofthemind?

Ifwetalkaboutthepainandrejectionwehave felt,otherscanseetheyarenotaloneandthat they,too,cansurviveand,oneday,thrive.Thatis whyIamsharingasmallpartofmystory.

Badchaptersdoend,andanewchapter,anew chance,willfollow.Thatisthemostimportant lessonofall.

She,andherhusband,Conrad,mournedthe deathofoneoftheirbeloveddogs,butendedup adoptingtwomoretoplaywiththeirolderdog.

Asshesoldoffherstore stock,shewasdelightedto rediscoverherbelovedfireplace.Shebought somefurnitureandpulledcherishedbelongings outofstorageandputthemondisplay. Somethingshehadnotbeenabletodofor years.

fortheJuly2020featurestory,it wasquicklyapparentthatsheis ahigh-energyforcetobe reckonedwithandthatevenin herdarkesttimes,including whenshefoughtcancer,she wasabletobringlighttoothers.

Heroldestgrandsongotmarried,aslifehas movedon.Anothergrandsonmovedbackfrom Arizonaandjustgotengaged. Oneofhergreatestjoysistimewithfamilyand shenowgetstoattendhergreatgrandkids soccergames.Sheevenhashadtimetohold severalfamilypicnics.

Thesedays,Sarnowskicollectsgnomes,pots, bowls,and“weird”musicalinstruments.

Eventhoughshehasbeenenjoyingher retirement,sheisconsideringacceptingafew actingroles.

Withhermothernow98yearsoldanddoing well,Sarnowskimakessuretogooutevery weekwithherandcherisheseverymoment.

WhenIstartedattheshop,Iwas soshortthatIcouldn’treachthetop rowofdoughnuts.

Elsieorderedmetotakethefullpot ofveryhotcoffee(thiswasbefore therewereregulationslimitingthe heatoffoodanddrinkservedandthe bigcommercialcoffeemakermade coffeesearinghot)andmakethe roundsofthecrowdedroom,filling cups.

WhenIwas12,Igotmyfirstactualpaying job.Iwasthrilledtobemaking$2anhourat thelittlelocaldoughnutshop.Eventhen,that wasextremelylowpay,butitwasahuge upgradefrommyallowance.

Ilookedather,totalfearinmy eyes.Sheignoredthatandonce againfirmlyorderedmetomakethe roundsandfillcups.Iknewwhat waslikelytohappen,butIdecided thatperhapsjustthisoncemy clumsinesswouldnotstrike.

Itwasatownfullofrealcowboys,American Indians,andalotofdust.Backinthoseyears, Oklahomahadstillnotfullyrecoveredfromthe DustBowl,eventhoughthedamagefromthat hadoccurredmany,manydecadesprevious.

Well,itjustsohappenedthatone day,Elsiewastoobusyatthe countertomaketheroundsofthe smallshoptorefilleveryone’scoffee. Backthen,youcouldsitintheshop anddrinkendlesscups(which severalofthetownoldtimerstook greatadvantageof)forhours.

IstartedworkingwhenIwasabout8years old,myfirstjobsbeingchoresaroundthefarm andcleaningthefarmhouse.Ingoodyears,I got25centsaweekasanallowance.

IworkedfivehourseverySaturdaymorningat thedoughnutshop,packingthefresh-made doughnutsintoboxes,hurryingtofillorders beforethebosssnappedatmeagain,cleaning counters,refillingeverything,makingcoffee, andmore.

Don’tletanyonetellyoudifferently, oldmengossipjustasmuch,ifnot more,thanoldwomendo.

Oneofthethingsyouwouldnotwantme doingisservinghotliquidsorfoods.Itjustwas notsafefortheplanetanditsinhabitants.

hisstoryshouldprobably startwithashort explanationthatIwasfar fromthemostgracefulkid ontheplanet.Iwalkedintothings,felldowna lot,droppedprettymucheverything,well,you gettheidea.

Inlateryears,thatincidentcametobe thefoundationofwhatIcall“TheCowboy Test.”

Anymanwhoclaimedtometobetough, I’djustsmileandsay,“Well,doyouthink youcanpassthetestanOklahoma cowboydid?”Haven’tfoundatakeryet.

Iwasmortified,horrified,andterrified asElsie’seagleearspickeduphiswords outofthehubbubintheroomandlooked overtoseewhatwasgoingon.

Ipaused.

Thiswasadifferentkindoftarget; everyothercuphadbeenona tabletop.

Itdidnothelpthateveryonewas watchingme,impatientlywaitingto gettheircupsfilled.

Nowadays,Ithinkbackonthatas certainpeoplewhineandcomplainand demandemployeesbefiredoverthe smallestofissues.

ThatwaswhenIstartedtopourthe boilinghotcoffeerightontothecowboy’s hand,missingthecupentirely.

Itwasn’ttoobad,atfirst.Ifilleda fewcups,spilledafewdrops.Iwas feelinggreat.Myconfidence,always atlowebb,wasbeginningtogrow.I COULDdothis!

Iapologizedtothecowboy,triedto cleanupthemess,anddidactuallyfillhis cupfinally(althoughIreallydon’tknow whyhetrustedmetoaccomplishthe task).

Iwasneveraskedtopourcoffeeagain, muchtomyrelief.

Ihaveneverunderstood,evenallof theseyearslater,howintheworldthat cowboyheldhisgroundanddidn’tmovea muscleasthescaldingcoffeepouredover hishand.Muchless,thekindnesshe showedbynotmakingascene,which wouldhavecausedmetobeinstantly fired.Ihaveneverforgottenhistoughness

Andthenthecowboywalkedupto me,histanned,callousedhand outstretchedwithhiscup.Politely, quietlywaitingforarefill.

Butmyconfidencewasflowing,IknewI couldhandlethis.

Ihavetohandittohim.Heneverso muchasflinched.Heheldsteady,ashe drylysaid,“Youwanttotryforthecup?”

Somecowboysreallyareastoughas theyareinthemovies.Thatparticular cowboyputupwithhishandbeingburned ratherthangetmefiredandeventold Elsiehewasfinewhentherewasnoway hecouldhavebeen.

PerhapsthefocusoftheCowboyTest shouldbechangedbecausethatcowboy savedmyjobthatday,heknewIwasjust akiddoingthebestIcould,whenhe couldhavebeensoverydifferent.
