GIANT ROBOT: A TECHNOCRATIC TAKE ON CURATORIAL CONFIGURATION OMOTESANDO, TOKYO, JAPAN ARQUITECTUM COMPETITION: VERTICAL FASHION MUSEUM SPRING 2010 IN COLLABORATION WITH PROF. THADDEUS ZARSE AND CHRISTIAN RODRIGUEZ

FLEXIBILITY IS ACHIEVED THROUGH THE INCORPORATION OF PLUG-IN INFRASTRUCTURE ALLOWING FOR A SERIES OF INTERIOR PATHS TO BE CREATED THROUGH CURATORIAL CONFIGURATION. THE EXHIBITION SPACES ARE ORGANIZED CHRONOLOGICALLY, WITH VERTICAL CIRCULATION ALLOWING FROM A LINEAR PROGRESSION THROUGH TIME WHILE EACH EXHIBITION MAINTAINS A DEGREE OF AUTONOMY. IN ADDITION, THE BUILDING IS WRAPPED ON ALL FOUR SIDES WITH INFRASTRUCTURAL CIRCULATION: ONE SIDE WITH STATIC CIRCULATION (FIRE STAIR, ELEVATORS) AND THE FACADES VISIBLE FROM OMOTESANDO ST. WITH A ROBOTIC STAIR SYSTEM. THE ROBOTIC STAIRS SIMULTANEOUSLY FUNCTION AS EXHIBITION SPACE AND CIRCULATION. THIS ALLOWS THEM TO REFLECT THE NATURE OF FASHION WHERE TRENDS TEND TO REPEAT THEMSELVES, CREATING A CONFIGURAL AND CURATORIAL CONNECTION THAT MEANDERS OFF THE MAIN, LINEAR CIRCULATION. DURING A FASHION SHOW, THE ROBOTIC STAIR MOVES OVER THE CENTRAL VOID AND ACTS AS THE RUNWAY WHERE MODELS ARE THEN TRAVERSING ACROSS THE FACADE AND INTO THE SHOWROOM. THIS BECOMES A DISPLAY FOR BOTH THE STREET PUBLIC AND THE SEATED GUESTS

DANCE SCHOOL FOR THE MOULIN ROUGE MONTMARTRE DISTRICT, PARIS, FRANCE ARQUITECTUM COMPETITION SUMMER 2009 THE SCHEME FACILITATES MOVEMENT AS VISITOR AND DANCER TRAVERSE ACROSS FLOORS AND ARE PULLED IN, UP, AND THROUGH THE BUILDING: ONE BECOMES A PARTICIPANT IN THE CONSTANT ART OF MOTION. ONE IS PULLED FROM THE EXTERIOR INTO A DYNAMIC INTERIOR EXPERIENCE BY MEANS OF THE PUBLIC VOID SPACE WHICH CARVES ITS WAY THROUGH THE MASSING OF THE BUILDING. THE INTERNAL DYNAMISM IS ACCENTUATED BY AN ATRIUM LINKING THE PUBLIC STREET LEVEL WITH THE PUBLIC TOP LEVEL CREATING A VERTICAL SPACE ALLOWING FOR POWERFUL DIAGONAL VIEWS INTO AND THROUGH THE TRAINING SPACES. THE CIRCULATION CORE IS AN EVENT SPACE WHEREBY VISITORS ARE FULLY EXPOSED AND SURROUNDED BY DANCE IN ANY OF THE PUBLIC SPACES. IN ADDITION, THE ATRIUM ACTS AS VISUAL AND PHYSICALLY CONNECTS THE DISPARATE TRAINING AREAS DESPITE THEIR DIFFERING FLOOR LINES THE ENTRY COURT FACILITATES THIS THEATRICAL MILIEU HAVING OUTDOOR CAFÉ SEATING AND STAIRS FOR VISITORS TO SIT AND WATCH THE DANCERS PRACTICE: THE FACADE ITSELF BECOMES A STAGE. THE RESULT IS A PUBLIC URBAN THEATER WHERE THE ROLE OF AUDIENCE AND PERFORMER IS SKEWED; A VISITOR WATCHES A DANCER, A DANCER WATCHES A VISITOR: THE SPACE BECOMES A LIVELY DESTINATION AS A MEANS TO CATALYZE SOCIAL DISCOURSE AND CULTURAL INTERACTION.

EXITING THE UFFIZI FLORENCE, ITALY FALL 2008

THE UFFIZI GALLERY HOUSES SOME OF THE MOST NOTABLE ART IN THE WORLD BUT DOES NOT HAVE AN ICONIC, DOMINATING PRESENCE WORTHY OF A WORLD CLASS MUSEUM. THE STRATEGY ADDRESSES THE DESIRE FOR ICONOGRAPHY AND A STRONG PRESENCE WITH THE PROPOSAL OF A TOWER THAT PROVIDES A VISUAL CONNECTION TO PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA. THE SCHEME IS ALSO A HOMAGE TO THE TOWERS THAT ONCE COVERED FLORENCE CENTURIES AGO. THE DESIGN IS SENSITIVE TO THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF FLORENCE: THE TOWER INVISIBLE FROM THE HISTORIC VIEW AT VIA CALZAIUOLI, BUT REVEALS ITSELF WHILE WALKING TOWARD THE MUSEUM. THE ADDITIONAL EXHIBIT SPACE IS PLACED UNDERGROUND TO LIMIT ALTERATIONS TO VASARI’S ARCHITECTURE. THE EXIT RESULTS IN A PIAZZA PIVOTING ABOUT THE TOWER; THE TOWER COMMUNICATING TO THE CITY THAT IT IS A DESTINATION NOT JUST FOR THE GALLERY, BUT FOR THE PIAZZA AS A GATHERING SPACE TO ENGAGE IN SOCIAL DISCOURSE. STAIRS ACT AS SEATING IN THE URBAN THEATER THAT HAS BEEN CREATED; A SPACE THAT CAN STAGE ARTISTIC PERFORMANCES LIKE THE URBAN THEATERS OF OLD. LOOKING INWARD: A JAPANESE CONSULATE IN NEW THE CHALLENGE OF THIS FOUR WEEK STUDIO WAS TO DEVELOP AN INWARDLY FOCUSED BUILDING WITHIN THE BUSY URBAN FABRIC OF NEW ORLEANS WHILE INTEGRATING INFLUENCES OF ZEN TEMPLES. SMALL PROGRAM ON A LARGE SITE ALLOWED FOR A THIN BAR SCHEME RESULTING IN A SEQUENCE OF INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES MAXIMIZING DAYLIGHTING, CROSS VENTILATION, AND VISUAL AND SPATIAL CONNECTIVITY ON BOTH THE TRANSVERSE AND LONGITUDINAL AXIS. PROGRAMMATIC DIFFERENTIATION WAS ACHIEVED BY ALTERING FLOOR LINES AND VOLUMETRIC ATTRIBUTES TO A SPECIFIC SPACE. BY PERFORATING THE PERIMETER WALLS AND IMPLEMENTING AUDIAL COMPONENTS (SUCH AS THE OFFICE WATERFALL), THE BUILDING INTERACTS WITH PEDESTRIANS OUTSIDE THE COMPLEX, ALLOWING THEM VIEWS INTO THE GARDENS AND SUBSEQUENT CURIOSITY TO ENTER THE CONSULATE.

DESIGN_BUILD

URBANbuild_PROTOTYPE 4 CENTRAL CITY, NEW OLREANS, LA SPRING 2009 URBANbuild IS A POST-KATRINA DESIGN/BUILD PROGRAM THAT ASSISTS DISTRESSED NEIGHBORHOODS OF NEW ORLEANS WITH AFFORDABLE AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. THIS IS THE FOURTH PROTOTYPE DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED BY TULANE ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS. THE SCHEME RESONATES WITH THE SURROUNDING CONTEXTUAL LANDSCAPE BOTH IN SCALE AND USAGE. GENEROUS FRONT AND BACK PORCHES ARE INCORPORATED EMPHASIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE SPACES IN THE AREA AS GATHERING SPACES TO FACILITATE SOCIAL DISCOURSE.

*FEATURED IN DEC/JAN 2010 ISSUE OF DWELL MAGAZINE

29

SPRING 2009 SMALL SQUARE FOOTAGE REQUIRED AN EFFICIENT PLAN. THIS WAS EXECUTED BY ELIMINATING HALLWAYS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, CREATING LARGER SPACES THAT CAN BE USED FOR VARIOUS FUNCTIONS, SUBSEQUENTLY PROVIDING THE HOMEOWNER WITH GREATER FLEXIBILITY IN PROGRAMMING/ FURNISHING THE HOME.

THE ORGANIZATION HAS SPENT $100,000 ANNUALLY MAINTAINING THE LOTS THEY OWN IN THE LOWER 9TH WARD. THE STUDIO FUNCTIONED AS A THINK TANK TO PROVIDE STRATEGIES TO BEST DEPLOY RECENTLY ACQUIRED GOATS TO CURB THESE MAINTENANCE COSTS WHILE INITIATING IDEAS OF URBAN FARMING. STRATEGIES WERE DERIVED THAT WERE BOTH PRAGMATIC IN EXECUTION AND ARCHITECTURALLY INTRIGUING TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND MARKETABILITY OF MAKE IT RIGHT IN ORDER TO ATTRACT MORE DONATIONS.
