REGIONAL STUDIO -

Regional Cultural Center

St. Charles, Missouri

Project: Cultural Center

Location: St. Charles, Missouri

Date: Fall 2021

Director(s): Steven Turnipseed & Michael Carney

The following project tasked each student in the studio to investigate the opportunities afforded by a unique regional offering and memorialize the condition with a carefully conceived and crafted Cultural Center. Research suggests that this particular moment in each region may be linked to an ecological site, an event, an infrastructure relic, a historic structure, a specific heritage or population collective, an ecotone, eco-tourism, or a physical landmark.

The Project proposes a cultural center that allows each student to truly understand their specific region. The regional studios intent was to shape a series of dynamic and varying architectural in-situ experiences that in-turn inform - and perhaps even re-inform - the larger community of each students’ distinct place.

Our regions depended on where each student currently resides - in this case, I was tasked to research and develop a better understanding of downtown St. Charles. Filled with landmarks, unique buildings, and a history filled community Frontier Park became the focal point of the proposed cultural center. It was situated right next to the Lewis and Clark Boathouse Museum, the Katy Trail, and The Missouri River. Not to mention, it was right next to historic Main Street.

It became the perfect opportunity to re-establish a historical connection to the rest of the region. Through the utilization of different programs such as AutoCAD, Revit, TwinMotion, and the Adobe Creative Suite, the proposed design became achievable in context.

Main goals of the project were to establish a solid relationship between the Lewis and Clark Museum as well as the surrounding landscaping - this involved a response to designing a building in the Flood Plane and how the location can be beneficial to the Katy trail and Surrounding area.

Blanchette Park Catholic Church

St. Charles, Missouri

PROJECT: A Facility for Spiritual Worship & Prayer

Location: St. Charles, Missouri

Date: Fall 2021

Director(s): Steven Turnipseed & Michael Carney

Students are tasked to remain in their respective region and research any faith-based organization or tradition. According to research, each faith-based groups’ architectural spaces have distinct names that are to be used in the design solution.

The project proposes a worship & prayer facility to accommodate for the Catholic religion - This is because a majority of faith based - groups in St. Charles County follows the Catholic tradition. This new Catholic Church is proposed to be located at Blancette Park in St. Charles County.

Being one of the older and more historic parks in the area, Blanchette park has many features to offer, expecially to the younger generations. Amenities include a 100% recycled scrap tire surfacing playground area, Picnic Shelters, Baseball Diamonds, Tennis Courts, Horseshoe Courts, Sledding Hill, Memorial Hall Community Building, the Rau Garden, an Angel of Hope Statue, Paved Biking and Hiking Trails. There are also significant features outside the site such as an Aquatic Facility, a Boys and Girls Club, and other local shopping centers.

Blanchette park is a key site to St. Charles County because of its location and historical significance to the community. It is the oldest park in St. Charles and with the Catholic Faith being the most dominant religion in the county - having a building of worhsip can become an essential nessecity to the location.

The design proposal of the catholic church can be a key feature to accommodate the younger population. The proposed church must have modern / contemporary design elements to attract all ages equipped with all the traditional requirements for a catholic church - along with an educational system for the younger generations to learn all about the catholic faith.

A thorough Site Analysis is needed to completely understand a specific region. The process of researching and analysing the social, historical, climatic, geographical, legal, and infrastructural characteristics of a dedicated site have been incorporated into the map showcased above. Examination of the characteristics are key essential elements to assist in establishing project goals through informed decisions. The Site Analysis considers the current physical conditions of the area and surroundings, as well as historical information about each individual facility to showcase their importance to the community. Neighboring buildings, sites, and environmental elements are synthesized into a single greater map to combine research, observations, and any newfound limitations and have been applied to begin the schematic and programming phase.

By utilizing information collected through the Site Analyis phase, the schematic and programming phase came after. Through this process, the overall design of the building can be developed as each space is carefully placed.

Sant Marti - Industrial Rehabilitation

Sant Marti, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

Project: A Facility Unique To a Specific District in the City of Barcelona

Location: Sant Marti, Barcelona

Date: Spring 2022

Director(s): Cristina Goberna Pesudo

The Studio explores the city of Barcelona, a catalyzer of a number of current relevant issues in global cities around the world. The focus was to understand the importance of the built environment and dive deeply into the social relations among its inhabitants and a repository of both, its history, and the current events, with all its complexity and conflicts these were then utilized as motivation for architectural invention.

The first phase of the semester challenged students to study in depth the history of Barcelona, its urban geography, common typologies, and current challenges it faces today such as massive tourism, internal political turmoil, and intense financial crisis. The studio explores Barcelonas current urban condition and takes into consideration the full dimension of polemics, complexities, history, and architecture to unique sites.

Each student was then tasked to explore the unique situation of 1 of the 10 specific districts in the city of Barcelona. Taking into consideration Lacaton & Vassal’s principle of NEVER DEMOLISH, the studio shifts its focus to answer the current polemic of the proposal to build a Hermitage Museum in the city of Barcelona with the proposal of 10 cultural buildings distrubited across the city unique to each individual district.

The final product was to be a grand Master Plan of each cultural building unique to its specific district highlighting the importance and history it brings to Barcelona. In my case, I was given the task to study the district of Sant Marti and look back at its Industrial Past and importance to the Catalan culture. The Cultural building was to highlight the different factory buildings that were essential to the Industrial Age and how it became important to remember how Sant Marti was once known as the Catalan Manchester of the city.

32|

LOCATION

Sant Marti is one of the largest districts in the city of Barcelona and is also filled with historical importance to the upbringing of the city. Now turning into one of the more modern districts, Sant Marti quickly transformed from an industrial district to becoming one of the more innovative and technologically advanced regions of country.

There are currently 10 neighborhoods in Sant Marti and each neighborhood contains old factory chimneys from factories remaining from the Industrial past. As a district that was once the center of Industrialization, the main goal became the preservation of its historical significance. While staying true to Lacaton & Vassal’s principle of “Never Demolish” the best site for a cultural building was none other than one of the most significant factory buildings in Sant Marti.

Located at the heart of the district, one of the first factories in Barcelona remains abandoned and is a perfect site for a building to educate, eperience, and enhance the knowledge of industrial importance the the city. Utilizing the large space and individual buildings provided by Can Ricarts remaining structure, historical significance can be embraced by incorporating a space dedicated to each factory types that could be found throughout the city. From Textile Mills, Engineering Plants, Flour Mills, Tanneries, Liqueur Distilleries, and even Chocolate Factories, its essential to remember these different factory types as they defined the industrial culture of Sant Marti for some time.

PROPOSAL / PROGRAM

A plan for the future but no appreciation for the past - Barcelona is developing to become a contending modern-day city through ambitious projects with Sant Marti at the center of development. What is now becoming the city’s hub for innovative technology companies and housing many major company headquarters, the district is continuing to look for future growth through modernization while continuing to abandoning its industrial character.

Prior to achieving its nickname as the technological district of Barcelona, one of Sant Marti’s well-known neighborhoods used to possess the title of the Catalan Manchester. Before the 20th century, the district was the center of Barcelona’s Industrial Revolution. It had the greatest concentration of factories in Catalonia, especially in the areas of Poblenou. With a variety of factories such as textile mills, engineering plants, flour mills, tanneries, liqueur distilleries, and even chocolate factories, this industrial culture defined Sant Marti for a while.

However, with new technological advancements in the works, Sant Marti is continuing to move forward while leaving behind its industrial culture and its impact to the city of Barcelona. Utilizing what once was a major textile factory in Sant Marti, I am proposing a facility that showcases the industrial culture in order to preserve the historical impact the different factories made for the district through Education, Experience, and Enhancing an awareness to the impacts of modernization and its industrial past. The plan is to host activities and information about the factories and will allow the rehabilitated Can Ricart to educate and participate in the growth of the district.

Single Family DwellingSpec Homes

Unincorporated St. Louis County, Missouri

Project: Proposed Spec Homes at 9210 & 9214 Sappington

Location: Unincorporated St. Louis County

Date: Fall 2021

Supervisor(s): Paul Dean Hunsicker (Architect) Mark Scheipeter (Contractor)

Schei Homebuilding Co., Inc. partnered with a developer with the hopes of turning 3 lots, 9210, 9214, and 9226, into a developmental project portraying single - family spec homes. Prior to moving forward with the process, a family quickly grew interested in the 9226 lot turning the spec home into a custom single - family dwelling along with a custom pool (Details in next project). The team envisioned two homes to be built and turned into the market to sell as new single family homes at a great location.

These homes would be advertised as a having a 3 - car garage with 4 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms all on a 1/2 acre lot in a well established school district perfect for families. As the architectural associate of the project, this was an interesting task because there was no client, rather, a team of contractors, developers, investors, and real estate agents. After trying to capture everyones creative solution, we were able to come up with a perfect floor plan that captured the length of the lot.

With the approval of the design(s), I was later tasked to create a “Coming Soon” Graphic that showcases the proposed homes. The plans for 9210 and 9214 Sappington spec homes were later scrapped due to budget constraints from the developers.

40|

For perspective, the graphic on the right showcases the long and narrow site. This became the driving factor of the entire building as the best way design solution was to use it’s length as an advantage.

Adhering to zoning setback requirements, the proposed single-family dwellings were the ideal buildings for families with plenty of room to spare on the property.

Project: Custom Single - Family Home

Location: Unincorporated St. Louis County

Completion Date: Summer 2022

Supervisor(s): Paul Dean Hunsicker (Architect) Mark Scheipeter (Contractor) Kevin Nadalin (Pool Engineer)

As one of the three lots that were designed for spec homes, 9226 Sappington caught the attention of a family looking for their forever home. Inspired by the original plans for the poperty, the homeowners looked to customize the home to their liking. One major difference between this lot and the other is the downgrade towards the backyard. This created a different approach and allowed the design to incorporate a walk-out and finished basement.

With a defining Sea Slate Exterior Finish and black trim, the outside is just as impactful as the inside where a Carrera Marble highlights the interior customizations. With a shorter length copared to the original spec homes, it allowed the homeowner to explore pool options. Working directly with Family Fun Pools based out of Ohio, we were able to create a fully customized pool based on the family’s interests. This included a custom splash deck, slide, water and fire feature acompanied by an in-ground hot tub and custom outdoor kitchen.

The finished project contains 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, a finished basement including a Bar Area, Custom Fish Tank, Lounge seating, and Hobby Room. To top it all off, all casework from the kitchen, bar, and bathrooms, is fully customized by an Amish Company.

Project: Custom Single - Family Home

Location: Fenton, Missouri

Completion Date: Spring 2022

As the Architectural Associate of a custom single family home, a family was looking to build their dream home. Located in a court, a family looked to maximize the customization of their new house to accommodate the irregular 1.01 acre lot. As the Architectural Associate, I assisted in all phases of the project from Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documentation, and took charge of the permitting process through the City of Fenton and St. Louis County.

The family also insisted in having an in-ground pool. Partnering with Narellan Pools based, we came up with a custom backyard oasis. This included a full outdoor kitchen completed with a grill, fridge, and bar area, while a one-piece fiberglass pool accompanied by a splash deck, it was everything the homeowner wanted.

As one of our first pool projects, I was put in charge with meeting with the client to dicuss and choose the perfect pool layout and learned the process to obtaining an in-ground pool permit. While the home owners decided to hire a designer for the house, our team assisted as much as we can to ensure we captured the homeowners vision and applied it to the custom house.

A young family of three looked to begin their forever home search. After finding a lot for sale in a private street in unincorporated St. Louis County, the family decided to demolish an abandoned building with the hopes of building a larger house to accommodate their needs.

As the architectural associate/project manager of the project, I was tasked to take charge of the schematic design phase, design development phase, construction documentation, and the permitting process with St. Louis County. Coordinating with different subcontractors and engineers, we were able to fully place the custom house in a position that would maximize its full potential including a circle driveway.

Equipped with 6 bedrooms, an office, large great room, exercise room, hobby room, bar area, a large kitchen, and theater room, just to name a few, this house caputured everything the homeowner wanted in their custom building.

As a returning client to the general contractor from many years prior, a family of two looked to design and build a custom house that accommodated their needs. After many reiterations of the floor plan, our team and client was able to come up with a final product to comply with the budget and design goals.

One major customization the homeowner emphasized was the elimnation of steps, with the exception of the basement stairs. This solution was approached by providing a “step” in the foundation where the floor joists would sit where the top of the floor joists would be level to the ground level. Doing so would eliminate the change of levels from the front, garage, and rear entrance of the house.

The home is equipped with two bedrooms, an office, large living room, and a kitchen fully customized by an Amish company based out of central Illinois. The homeowner also looked to incorporate technological solutions to the project.

Project: Studo Competition: Multi-Family Building Apartment Renovation

Location: Terre Haute, Indiana

Completion Date: Fall 2018

Director(s): Andrew Payne (Director) Azizi Arrington-Slocum (Professor)

Terre Haute’s very own Westminster Village partnered with ISU’s Built Environment program in redesigning two apartment homes in the fall of 2018.

Multiple groups of three were asked to design an apartment home that accommodated the residents’ needs. After three weeks, we were tasked to present our proposed idea of the new apartment plan to the residents, staff, and school faculty. The jury would choose two designs that would eventually be built throughout the semester. Our design was chosen by the residents and staff for the renovation of the apartment home.

The renovation, The Ivy, is an updated single bedroom apartment with warm tones and earthy materials which were carefully selected to ensure the safety of our clients. Furnishings were both comfortable and practical for clients above the age of 55.

PROPOSED FINISHED FLOOR PLAN NTS

The Mental Health America of West Central Indiana partnered with ISU’s Built Environment Program to help find a creative, innovative, sustainable, and professional design solution for a tiny house project.

The homes are designed to accommodate those who are homeless veterans in poverty to give them shelter. The tiny home needed to be constructed on campus at Indiana State University and would be later transported on site.

Due to the size of the lab, we were constrained on the total size of the building. The Modern Tiny Home was a total of 236 square feet with a modern touch for innovation. Natural lighting was a must, therefore the orientation of the building playd a major role due to the window placements.

After Presentations, the Mental Health America of West Central Indiana took our proposed design as an example to be presented to the city Building Department in order for the Tiny Home Village to be constructed located in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Project: Hand Sketches / Drawings

Director(s): --

As an Architecture student, it is very important to always have a creative mindset to diversify ones’ self from all others. Creative and innovative thinking skills are considered to be one of the many key attributes needed to be succesful in the design field.

A free-flowing mind of new and creative ideas has always helped me create new and innovative designs. Outside of learning new online programs such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and bim software, one thing an architect can always rely on are hand-sketches.

The significance of hand drawings and sketches have always been a part of the architectural process, therefore, I am and always will be an artist!
