The daughter of life-long educators, Guinyard believes she would have become a teacher if she didn’t pursue her broadcast journalism career. She is a graduate of Florida State University.
CHARLENE DREW JARVIS
SYLVIA DREW IVIE
In her long and distinguished career, CHARLENE DREW JARVIS has held positions as a neuroscientist, legislator and university president.
Ms. Sylvia Drew Ivie, JD is the Special Assistant to the President and CEO of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Ms. Drew Ivie is the daughter of the University’s namesake, Dr. Charles R. Drew.
She received a BS from Oberlin College (1962), an MS from Howard University (1964), and a PhD in Neuropsychology (1971) from the University of Maryland, all the while balancing the demands of a wife and mother of two active young boys. The Honorable Charlene Drew Jarvis was named one of the most powerful women in Washington, D.C. by the “Washingtonian Magazine” in 1989, 1994, and 2007 and by “The Washington Business Journal” in 1985.
As the Special Assistant to the President, she serves as an advisor on community relations/affairs. She works with health centers, community-based organizations and community coalitions to develop and implement programs that promote the University and its strategic plan. In addition, she assists with establishing and promoting positive external relationships with various communitybased organizations, individuals, and businesses that support the University’s strategic outreach efforts.
Jarvis’ legacy as a daughter of Dr. Charles R. Drew has given her a special perspective as an advocate for science and health education. In her association with the American Red Cross, Dr. Jarvis has traveled to many Red Cross and Bone Marrow sites around the nation to speak about her father’s accomplishments and to encourage the participation of minority blood and marrow donors. In 2014, Dr. Jarvis was given an award for her long service from the Washington, DC Chapter of the American Red Cross. She is the recipient of more than 100 awards for her leadership, including honorary doctorates from Amherst College, George Washington University, Oberlin College, and a Distinguished Alumni Award from Howard University. Dr. Jarvis is valued for her analytical skills, intellectual rigor, probing questions, and pragmatic approach to problem solving. These traits made her advisory contributions much in demand by dozens of major organizations and commissions, including many in which she is contributing during this period as the “working retired”. Dr. Jarvis is the mother of the late Peter David, and Ernest Drew Jarvis (Debbi Lockhart Jarvis) and grandmother to EJ and Jacob Jarvis. In 2013, she was re-married Dr. DeMaurice Moses, a retired pediatrician with whom the respective families shared summers in a beach community outside of Annapolis, Md.
Her past position was Mental Health Deputy for Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. Ms. Drew Ivie was also formerly Senior Deputy for Human Services for Mark Ridley-Thomas of the LA County Board of Supervisors, 2nd District. Her professional career includes serving as Executive Liaison to Los Angeles County Commission for Children and Families at the LA County Board of Supervisors. Ms. Drew Ivie was also the Founder and Project Director of the South Los Angeles Community Kitchen, which taught healthy cooking skills to youth, seniors, and patients with chronic diseases. Prior to this she was a consultant to The California Endowment, Disparities in Health in South LA, on the faculty of the Community Health Leadership Training Program, and was the Chief Executive Officer for 16 years of the T.H.E. (To Help Everyone) Clinic, Inc. T.H.E. Clinic is a primary health care clinic serving largely minority and immigrant women and children in South Central and Southwest Los Angeles, California. Previous work experiences also include Executive Director of the National Health Law Program, Director of the Office of Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Assistant Counsel to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Ms. Drew Ivie is a member of the Advisory Committee to RAND Corporation, a member of the Board of Directors for the Angell Foundation, and serves on the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. Kaiser Family Foundation’s Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights, the 1995 Center for Women’s Policy Studies’ Wise Women Award, and the 2002 California Black Caucus’s Community Asset Award. Ms. Drew Ivie gained her Bachelor of Arts at Vassar College and obtained her Juris Doctorate from Howard University School of Law.
BEBE DREW PRICE Bebe Roberta Drew is the eldest of four children of Charles R Drew MD and M. Lenore Drew. She was born in New York city at the time her father was doing research on blood preservation and developing his thesis on banked blood. When she was born, the nursing staff referred to her as “ Little Blood Bank Drew” so B.B. was named for his project. The family moved to Washington, DC and lived on the Howard University campus, a short walk for her father to go to Freedmen’s Hospital where he taught Black surgical residents which he considered his most important work. Bebe attended Trinity College where she majored in French, and also earned credits in Russian. She married Kline A Price, Jr., a Mechanical Engineer right after she graduated. Several years later she taught French while her husband followed his father, Kline A Price, Sr MD in the study of medicine. Bebe and Kline were blessed with four accomplished children. When the children were older, Bebe became the first director of The Literacy for Children at Howard University Hospital whose main focus was putting children’s books in waiting rooms and patient areas. As the program grew, students were employed to read to children, at the bedside and in the waiting rooms when possible. Educational programs were brought from the outside to the hospital auditorium, including musicians, puppeteers, and even Clifford the Big Red Dog after his performance at the Library of Congress. Local children and parents were invited. Eventually here were enough books to give to three elementary school’s pre-K classes and classes for pregnant teens on the importance of reading to the very young. It was a very fulfilling endeavor which she stopped when her husband retired.
CHARLES DREW, JR. Bio pending....
Since he was overwhelmingly elected in 2008, and reelected in 2012 and 2016 to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Mark Ridley-Thomas has distinguished himself as a strong advocate for more than two million Second District residents. He presently serves as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors and is a board member of L.A. Care and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He also sits on the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission. Supervisor Ridley-Thomas has promoted the District’s interests on a variety of fronts, including transportation, job creation and retention, and local hiring. In the area of health policy, he has overseen the construction of the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, as well as a network of cutting-edge health care facilities throughout the District. He has facilitated the use of technology and encouraged an integrated approach to wellness that includes mental health care and a prominent role for school-based clinics. His advocacy has helped secure an equitable share of funding for public-private partnership health clinics in underserved areas. Prior to his election to the Board of Supervisors, Supervisor Ridley-Thomas served the 26th District in the California State Senate where he chaired the Senate’s Committee on Business, Professions and Economic Development. He served as Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus in 2008 and led the Caucus in unprecedented levels of cooperation and collaboration with counterparts in the Latino and Asian-Pacific Islander Legislative Caucuses. Mark Ridley-Thomas was first elected to public office in 1991 and served with distinction on the Los Angeles City Council for nearly a dozen years, departing as Council President pro Tempore. He later served two terms in the California State Assembly, where he chaired the Assembly Democratic Caucus. His legislative work addressed a broad range of issues with implications for economic and workforce development, health care, public safety, education, budget accountability, consumer protection and civic participation.
He is widely regarded as the foremost advocate of neighborhood participation in government decisionmaking. By virtue of his founding of the Empowerment Congress, arguably the region’s most successful 24-year experiment in neighborhood-based civic engagement, he is considered the founder of the Neighborhood Council movement. Ridley-Thomas’ political career was preceded by a decade of service as executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles, which followed a brief but successful five-year stint as a high school teacher. The Supervisor is a graduate of Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles and earned a baccalaureate degree in Social Relations with a minor in Government and a master’s degree in Religious Studies with a concentration in Christian ethics from Immaculate Heart College. Supervisor RidleyThomas went on to receive his Ph.D. in Social Ethics from the University of Southern California focusing on Social Criticism and Social Change. He is married to Avis Ridley-Thomas, Co-Founder and Director of the Institute for Non-Violence in Los Angeles. They are the proud parents of Sinclair and Sebastian, both Morehouse Men. Sinclair recently earned an MBA degree at USC’s Marshall School of Business, works in the investment banking industry, and resides in San Francisco with his wife Shaunicie, an attorney, and newborn son Duke Flynn. Sebastian is a member of the California State Assembly representing the 54th District, which includes Southwest Los Angeles, Culver City, Century City and Westwood. He currently chairs the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee.
Director, OASIS Clinic and AIDS Program Los Angeles County – Martin Luther King Jr –MACC Los Angeles, CA 90059 Co- Director Drew Center for AIDS Research Associate Professor Internal Medicine and Family Practice Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science Los Angeles, CA 90059 Assistant Professor, University of California at Los Angeles. Dr. Jordan treated his first patient in 1979, and in 1981 called him for follow-up, saying I know what you have. Thus, I have been involved in HIV from the beginning. That includes three terms on the original Los Angeles county Commission on AIDS, which chaired for two years; and being involved with the original HIV Planning Council and the subsequent merger with the Commission. Outreach has been a long term interest I developed the Focused Intervention model in 1986. It has been used by GSK as its Act4Life national campaign, as well as being cited by CDC and HRSA. Because of this model, we continue to see 1- 12 new clients per months, and many with CD4 counts above 400. Further interests include expanding services for adolescents and transgender clients and further developing our community advisory boards. The latter will be composed of a Women’s group, a Transgender support group and the Adolescent support group, and the Client advisory Committee. All have been established and are meeting. My participation on a national level includes consultants to several pharmaceutical companies; having termed off the DHHS Guidelines Committee; being on a CDC advisory committee for outreach to Black MSM’s and being PI to three CDC sponsored projects with the National Medical Association. Locally that translate into me sending letters to 4400 local primary care providers asking them to test their patients for HIV. Through this we have identified 23 - 104 patients annually. These are insured. A project to identify the un-insured involves identifying the zip codes with the highest rates of HIV, STD, and teenage pregnancy in the Second District, then mapping out those zip codes and having effective outreach/testing programs in those areas.
