DEAR READERS Welcome to the seventh edition of Sika Australia’s SYNERGY magazine. In this issue, we present you with a number of unique projects that were made possible through Sika‘s local partnership with trusted and dedicated application partners. We provide an insight into the recent refurbishment of the DFO Shopping Centre in Homebush, Sydney. This superb, well-known venue offers an amazing shopping experience with many designer brands under one roof as well as activities that offer further entertainment for shoppers. We are honoured to have been part of this project by delivering a unique and world class flooring solution for a 1,200m2 section of the large shopping complex during one of the busiest times of the year. Another iconic project that Sika was involved in was the recent, $200 million upgrade of the Sydney Cricket Ground. Working closely with the main flooring contractor, Sika was able to provide complete flooring and waterproofing solutions for this important project. In addition, we have revisited one of our major green roof projects, the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant. Two years after the completion of the vegetation transplanting during the construction phase, you can now appreciate the effect of the green roof and it’s surroundings. Sika supplied over 45,000m2 worth of Sarnafil waterproofing membrane, which provides a watertight solution for the roof, protecting the multi-billion dollar structure and it’s contents.
Miljan has worked for Sika Australia since 2005, having grown through the ranks of the company, initially as a Product Engineer, then business unit manager and as of October 2010, General Manager. Under his leadership, Sika Australia has increased its presence in regional areas, increased production and developed a team of enthusiastic, dedicated and well trained Sika employees.

CARPARK WATERPROOFING FOR $350M DEVELOPMENT The landmark $350 million urban development, located in the Inner West Melbourne suburb of Footscray, will incorporate an array of residential and commercial development, shared community spaces, cafes and facilities while showcasing a unique architectural design and sustainable living in a modern inner city environment. Within this development is a multi-storey residential building that required a reliable waterproofing and flooring solution for a 6,500m2 area of it’s multi-storey carpark structure. The project called for all floors of all levels to be trafficable, hard-wearing, non-slip and highly UV resistant while the first level was also required to be completely waterproof and include water tight crack bridging in order to protect the tenancies on the ground floor from water ingress.
After working closely together on previous projects such as AAMI Stadium, the MCG and other commercial carparks, Sika, in conjunction with Able Industrial Floors were brought in by the main contractor Grocon and invited to propose a suitable solution. Rising to the task, Sika recommended its specially designed carpark deck waterproofing system for the project. This system offered a complete waterproofing and flooring solution for multiple levels by using a combination of Sikalastic-488SL, and Sikalastic-489 liquid waterproofing membranes coupled with Sika’s flooring system comprised of Sikafloor-160 and Sikafloor-264T. Sikalastic-488SL, a one component, UV stable, low solvent, polyurethane liquid waterproofing membrane was applied as a
heavy duty base layer before Sikalastic-489, a high performance liquid membrane which, with its high abrasion resistance and trafficable qualities, was applied on top to act as a wear coat when used on the lower deck of the carpark. This provided the vital waterproofing system to protect the tenancies and retail spaces on the ground floor. Applied to the upper levels of the carpark was Sika’s modular flooring system. Made up of Sikafloor-160, a two-part solvent free, epoxy primer and binder and Sikafloor-264T, a high performance, high-build epoxy coating, the flooring system provided a hard-wearing, non-slip flooring solution that exhibited a high quality, decorative finish, perfectly complementing the surrounding modern architectural feel of the urban development.

The direct factory outlet shopping centre, located in Homebush, Sydney is an increasingly popular shopping destination for tourists and locals alike with over 80 speciality stores offering a range of products including home wares, clothing, electronics and furniture. The centre is considered a shopping hot-spot with premium, well known fashion brands such as Hugo Boss, Armani Exchange, Burberry, Top- Shop and Calvin Klein all owning real estate within the complex. Working closely with Firmstone, our experienced and creative flooring specialists, Sika was pleased to offer a flooring solution for this one of a kind project. Open to the public 7 days, and attracting tens of thousands of shoppers on a weekly basis, the DFO Shopping Centre is a constant hot-bed of shopping activity and after years of non-stop foot traffic, the centre ultimately required a large, 1,200m2 section of its floor to be completely refurbished. Given the new segment of flooring would be in area populated by premium and high end shop fronts, an extremely durable yet very aesthetically appealing solution that tied in with the decorative theme of the surrounding store fascias was needed. Sika Australia, working closely with it’s experience and trusted flooring applicator Firmstone, recommended Sikafloor-160, a two-part solvent free, epoxy primer and binder. Sikafloor-160, with its proven track record - having being used in past, highprofile flooring systems such as the MCG and Perth Arena, was perfectly suited for the project and after deliberations with architects and main contractors, Mainbrace, a timber mock-up of the flooring section was made. Once it confirmed that the finish would match the architect’s original impression, work began on the unique project. Working in areas of 300m2 at a time, the floor was vacuum ground, providing a suitable substrate, before being primed with Sikafloor-160. Silver and grey metallic shards, that would ultimately provide the floor with the effect of a star filled galaxy, were selected and mixed into Sika’s specialised self-levelling epoxy. Once thoroughly mixed, Sikafloor-160 was applied as a self-leveller at 3–4mm in thickness. As the epoxy flowed, assisted by precise trowelling, and the 40 minute curing process began, the shards settled to create the clouded, translucent 3D effect throughout the floor. Given the refurbishment of the centre was being completed during the exceptionally busy Christmas shopping season, it was paramount that the centre experienced the minimal amount of downtime as possible. Firmstone, working overnight while the centre was closed to the public, were able to successfully complete the project within the strict time limitations.
GIVEN THE REFURBISHMENT OF THE CENTRE WAS BEING COMPLETED DURING THE EXCEPTIONALLY BUSY CHRISTMAS SHOPPING SEASON, IT WAS PARAMOUNT THAT THE CENTRE EXPERIENCED THE MINIMUM AMOUNT OF DOWNTIME AS POSSIBLE.

membrane was fully applied in sections and adhered with Sarnacol 2142s. This provided a watertight seal beneath the green roof while the application of several sections would prevent leaks and water ingress under the membrane, should the membrane be breached with punctures or damage from above. Being root resistant, the risk of water ingress is greatly reduced making Sika Sarnafil ideal for green roof applications from small residential projects to large scale commercial builds.
NEWS FROM SIKA WORLDWIDE Malmö, Sweden A gigantic golden chasm welcomes visitors to the Emporia shopping centre, one of the biggest in Scandinavia. Situated in the city of Malmö in Sweden, the centre covers a total area over 93,000m2 showcases over 200 stores and welcomes 25,000 visitors each day. The complex, characterised by glass, a variety of colours and a very distinct waveshaped entrance, was designed by renowned Swedish architect firm Windgårdhs and was awarded BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification, illustrating the European’s focus on sustainable construction. The design reflects Emporia’s role as a safe haven and a place full of surprises with colours guiding shoppers through the shopping centre, with each area featuring its own design and colour scheme.
Completed in 2012, Emporia has won numerous national and international prizes for its design and marketing, including the “World’s Best Shopping Building” at the prestigious World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Singapore in 2013 and the “Best Shopping Centre” at the 2014 Mipim Awards in Cannes. The design of the shopping centre is glassbased with both entrances (one in marine blue and one golden amber colour) being expertly crafted in formations that resemble crashing waves. After developing a unique and customised solution for bonding the exterior glass to the frame, Sika won the contract and subsequently was asked to supply the rest of the exterior structural glazing, the sealant for the insulating glass, the inside weather sealant and the adhesive for the decorative glass and mirrors.
The glass systems, used to construct the one of a kind entrances, were produced in a manufacturing plant close to the building site and delivered on demand. This practice, on top of Sika’s tailored application method, which halved production time and resulted in less than 1% waste, ensured an extremely speedy and efficient construction process for the project. It is common to use a mechanical safety edge between the shop windows, but after testing a range of sealants the architects were convinced to opt for a black Sikasil which offers a safe and reliable solutions due to its ability to flex with the movements of the glass. The mall’s interior boasts coloured glass features and a spectacular waterfall-like elevator, all designed and constructed using Sika solutions and our expertise of weather sealing in structural glazing solutions.

COMPLETE FLOORING & WATERPROOFING SOLUTION The Sydney Cricket Ground, originally built in 1882, is considered by many as one of the most iconic sporting stadiums in Australia, if not the world, and is home to a number of sporting teams including the Sydney Sixers Cricket Team, the NSW Blues Cricket Team and the Sydney Swans Football Club. With a capacity of 48,000 and hosting Tests, One Day International, Twenty20 cricket matches, as well as AFL and some Rugby League games, the stadium is a vital part of Australia’s sporting culture. Sika, working closely with skilled contractors Firmstone, were honoured to provide complete flooring and waterproofing solutions for this important project. The $197.5million development, expertly managed and co-ordinated by AW Edwards, involved the construction of the new MA Noble, Don Bradman and Dally Messenger stands. These upgrades saw the requirement for suitable flooring solutions for the lower concourse and staircases as well as a combined flooring and waterproofing solution for the upper deck of the newly refurbished stand. A number of important criteria needed to be considered when selecting an appropriate flooring solution for the concourse. The venue’s busy schedule, seeing millions of spectators pass through the gates each year, meant the flooring system, that would be installed in an area servicing public facilities such as toilets, bars and food outlets, needed to be extremely durable with a proven track record of being utilised in similar projects involving high levels of foot traffic. Aesthetics was another influential aspect to be taken into account. Due the redevelopment of the stand, the large flooring area of the lower level concourse, needed to tie in with the architects impression and overall design of the surrounding infrastructure. Safety and maintenance both played another role in the decision as the concourse floor was required to be non-slip in order to satisfy OH&S requirements while also being easy to clean and maintain with the ability to withstand cleaning chemicals. Ultimately, after discussions between all parties, Sikafloor-160, a two-part solvent free epoxy primer and binder that forms part of the modular Sikafloor system was chosen as a primer while Sikafloor-264T, a two-component, solvent free pigmented epoxy resin was to be used as the highbuild top coat, offering a stylish, durable and non-slip surface. A key challenge for the flooring phase of the project was the strict time restraints. With the ground set to host the highly anticipated 3 match series of Major League Baseball, with the Arizona Diamond Back and LA Dodgers competing, a rapid solution was required for the 2,000m2 area of flooring. Firmstone, with their extensive experience in similar, large-scale flooring projects were contracted and were given approximately 10 days to prepare the area and lay the flooring.

setting time provided a tough, non-slip and high build top coat that would be cured in time for the upcoming events. With the system also being applied to the multiple flights of stairs that ascended from the concourse level to the roof, the non-slip characteristics of the floor were vital to ensure OH & S approval.
The upper deck area of the SCG forms both the roof of the stadium as a whole, and is utilised as an additional bar and event space during matches. This presented a number of interesting challenges to providing a waterproofing and roofing solution, as many UV stable waterproofing membranes are strictly non-trafficable.
The addition of the aluminium oxide offered an impressive and consistent colouring of the floor throughout the large concourse level, complementing the stand and it’s timber feature walls. Continuing the theme, the same system was applied to large set of stairs rising from the concourse level, all the way to the roof.
As always, Sika were able to provide a solution to this issue by specifying their newly released, Sikalastic-489 membrane system, a high performance, self-levelling polyurethane waterproofing membrane. The system is built up in a number of layers, expertly applied by the team at Firmstone Contractors.
Sikafloor-160, and Sikafloor-264T, having been used as a combined system in past sporting venue projects such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground, AAMI Stadium and Perth Arena, provides an extremely durable and non-slip flooring
First, the substrate was primed with Sikafloor-160, again creating a chemical key for the membrane and promoting adhesion of the membrane to the substrate. A silicate screed was then cast into the wet Sikafloor-160, and once dry

the excess was vacuumed from this prime coat to create a mechanical key for the membrane to adhere to. This mechanical and chemical key system provides the strongest bond and the most superior performance of the membrane on the roof, which means that the membrane will stand up to the extremes of weather in Sydney, from the baking sun in summer to heavy rain and sudden cold during winter.
Once the Sikalastic-488 membrane was applied, a second silicate was broadcasted on top to provide the non-slip surface that will allow the stadium deck to be safely accessed by the public. Finally, Sikalastic-489, Sika’s newly released UV stable and trafficable coating is applied to the whole roof area, to provide added durability and the trafficable capability required for this busy entertainment space. The most interesting element of this project is the swirling pattern of greys that has been applied to the surface of the stadium deck, only visible from the air. Inspired by the architects, this wavy design of light and dark grey is reminiscent of the pattern used in the Wonthaggi Desalination plant. This unique feature adds visual interest to the stadium, which is sure to delight air travellers as they circle over this landmark of the city.

WONTHAGGI GREEN ROOF IN FULL BLOOM Two years after completion, the Wonthaggi Desalination plant’s Green Roof is looking better than ever as vegetation that was planted during the construction phase, can now be seen in full bloom. Sika supplied over 45,000m2 of Sarnafil sheet waterproofing membrane which provides a guaranteed, watertight solution for the Green Roof, protecting the multi-billion dollar structure and it’s equipment.

BALMORAL BEACH, SYDNEY
PICTURE PERFECT REFURBISHMENT Located in Mosman, on Sydney’s Lower North Shore is Balmoral Beach. The small, yet locally famous beach, with views over the Sydney Harbour National Park, incorporates a number of family friendly attractions including a large park, enclosed swimming area and a walking track which sits atop the Balmoral Sea Wall. The sea wall, constructed in 1929 and spanning over 1.5kms along the waterfront, provides protection to the coastline by preventing upland erosion and storm surges from flooding up into the surrounding areas. Due to years of exposure to the harsh elements, including salt water, sand blasts and high levels of sun, multiple sections of the concrete wall were showing signs of severe degradation and in dire need of repairs. With the last renovation works on the wall being completed over 20 years ago, an audit revealed and Mosman Council agreed that the concrete wall was showing signs of deterioration and exhibited ‘significant defects’, including reinforcement corrosion, concrete cracking and spalled areas. These were particularly visible on the bridge to Rocky Island and patches near the Bathers Pavilion. The project called for a complete refurbishment of the various areas of the wall and supporting structure including pillars, vertical walls, handrails, bridges and other sections. The project required a long lasting and aesthetically pleasing repair solution for the failing and cracked sections. Working with Metrocorp Technologies, Sika’s trusted contractor ,Sika Monotop 352NFG, a light weight mortar with corrosion inhibitor agents was used in the patching of concrete work that included corroded and exposed steel reinforcement. Sika Gunite GP, a spray applied cement based mortar was used on large vertical surfaces including the walls underneath the bridge. Square cut sections of the wall were repaired using Sika Monotop 436N, a self compacting form and pour mortar. Sika Monotop FC, a Fine Fairing Coat Mortar was the perfect solution for repairing finer small sections, including the edge of the hand rails, which allowed easy application and the transitional blending from old to new sections of the wall. For the final touches, SikaDur 52, a fast curing, two component epoxy injection resin was used to fill the numerous open V’d out cracks that had formed along the wall.

EAST VILLAGE RESIDENCIES ZETLAND, SYDNEY Opened in October 2014, and located just 3kms from the Sydney CBD, East Village by PAYCE is a brand new development incorporating a combination of modern residential apartments and a unique and vibrant urban shopping complex, influenced by renowned marketplaces from around the world, including Chelsea Markets in New York and Barcelona’s La Boqueria. Designed by Turner and developed by PAYCE, the project is considered a major part of the Victoria Park area, regarded as one of the last major urban renewal development areas in the inner city ring of Sydney. Embracing the Sustainable Sydney 2020 blueprint, PAYCE used a number of initiatives to achieve a 5 Star Green Star Design Rating.
The project required a paintable and nonstaining joint sealant for the outer facade of the building. After discussions with the architects and contractors, it was agreed that SikaHyflex-250 Facade satisfied all specified criteria and was ultimately chosen for the project. The high performance, low VOC, hybrid modified polymer based joint sealant was applied to a range of vertical and horizontal connection joints between the external facades of the apartment building. With excellent elasticity, a non-sagging formula and a high movement capability of +100/-50%, SikaHyflex-250 ensured that all joints would remain watertight, no matter
how far the substrates may move, while Sika’s i-cure technology, which promotes a more even cross-linking progression during the curing stage resulted in no weaknesses or bubbles, even in extreme weather conditions. This provides a strong bond to the substrates as well as a smooth finish to the surface. This ensured the paint that was applied once the sealant had cured to adhere and dry in a uniform fashion. Having been used in other large scale jobs such as 44 Market Street, Sydney, Sika HyFlex-250 Facade is becoming the popular choice for the sealing of facades in medium to large buildings that require a reliable, longlasting and highly elastic sealing solution.
