Simon Balle Careers Newsletter Issue 2 – February 2017 Welcome to our second issue of the Simon Balle Careers newsletter. We have had a busy couple of months especially with our updates on the Careers Education website and we really hope that you are enjoying this resource. This month we have had assemblies promoting our website and careers provision as well as resourcing the sixth form and library with some new books. We are always happy to hear your feedback on how we can make our careers web page even better. Please send information to Mr. Brennan on brennand@simonballe.herts.sch.uk
Our new careers website Please check our ‘Careers Education’ page. This can be located by clicking on ‘SBAS Community’ dropdown and then click on ‘Careers Education’. This includes the following information;
Introduction
Current careers provision
A variety of careers website links
‘A Day in the life’ – new addition
Our careers showcase page (this includes news from recent career related trips)
We would love to hear from parents who would be willing to talk to us about ‘a day in the life’ of your job, as this would really give our students something to aspire too. Please contact me on brennand@simonballe.herts.sch.uk if you are available for a discussion or to simply just complete one of our proforma documents.
Student careers group Since our last newsletter we have had two student careers meetings where we have updated our Careers and Work Related Learning policy as well as making changes to the website. Thank you to D Rugg Gunn and A Cousins (STEM & Careers student leader’s) for their support in leading this group. With representatives across all Key stages, we have had some very informative meetings with some
fantastic ideas on how we can continue to promote Careers Education at Simon Balle All-through School. We have also had the pleasure of the company of Mr Giles Tilbury, our Youth Connexions advisor, at these meetings. Please see below an introduction from Mr Tilbury; Dear students and parents/carers, I have really enjoyed my first term as the Youth Connexions Personal Adviser at Simon Balle. I’ve been working mainly with students in KS4 and KS5, discussing their thoughts on the various options available at the end of year 11 and the end of year 13 respectively. I am also grateful to have had the opportunity to introduce myself and our service at parents evenings and open evenings. I recently attended a SBS Student Careers Group meeting and I look forward to supporting future discussions and plans in any way I can. If you would like to contact me during the academic year with any particular careers/options related questions, please do so on: giles.tilbury@hertfordshire.gov.uk . Students can also ‘drop-in’ and have a chat on Tuesdays or Thursdays at break or lunch time in the office close to the learning support rooms. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2017,
Giles Tilbury Youth Connexions East Herts Team
