Performing Arts Centre, Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre, a sculptural form with a design imitating a growing organism developing into a network of branches uses a method involving branching algorithms in an iterative design process. Working from a bottom-up approach, parametric modelling uses complex algorithms and parameters which easily provide boundless iterations for mass customization. The surface supplies data which directs parametric adaptation of the constituent by maintaining an even and homogenous pattern. A network of components is generated by the same scripts in parametric modelling thus creating ease in tweaks or changes in parameter inputs. As discussed by Patrik Schumacher, “Parametricism is a style constitut[ing] an artistic agenda that embodies a will to form. The goal of parametricism is to retain the identity of the constituent in consideration of the intrinsic surface differentiation. Parametric modelling is advantageous as it can be modified to suit each unique environment while attending to numerous scales of development, highlighting benefits of parametricism. Parametric modelling grants users control over the design process and is favourable for building information modelling as it assists to increase building efficiency using algorithms to locate ideal site-specific components.

The Floral Street Bridge, London
Functioning not purely as a footbridge connecting the back sides of two buildings, Floral Street bridge creates a phenomenal separation of The Royal Ballet School from the landmark Royal Opera House. The bridge was to be a prominent architectural statement but at the same time providing a link between both buildings. Parametric design in this example, retains the identity of the bridge while exploring the aesthetic function. It has come to my attention that parametric design needs to extend its scope towards ambient and observer parameters; not merely taking into account object parameters. Integral work of ambient and observer parameters promotes animation which can be achieved with regard to the expression of architectural surfaces. The play and conversions in lighting places the observer in a position that drives sensational conversions in the appearance and comprehension of surfaces or spaces. As such, functional components of parametricism are enhanced. This is readily available through building information modelling supplied by parametric modelling which locates ideal building components to manipulate lighting and other functions.
