THE FIRST JQ FESTIVAL!

CELEBRATE JQ’S RICH HERITAGE AND HISTORY – AS WELL AS ITS REPUTATION FOR CREATIVE FLAIR – AT THIS UNIQUE SUMMER EVENT Organised by the Jewellery Quarter Business Improvement District (JQBID), the festival, which officially marks the opening of Golden Square, will give visitors the chance to experience the wide variety of creative work that takes place across the Quarter.

As part of this free fun-filled event, which runs from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th July, you can take a look behind-the-scenes of some of the brilliant industries that have their home here, including graphic designers, sculptors, glass makers and etchers; film makers, photographers, jewellery makers, game designers, and 3D printers. As well as a launch party on Friday, there will also be a whole host of family friendly activities, including a helter-skelter, photo booths, face painting and workshops, plus plenty of free outdoor performances, featuring musicians, bands, theatre and dance troupes, all at Golden Square. The JQ Grand Bazaar event will bring together vintage and crafts stalls, while JQ StrEATMarket will showcase the best of the independent food scene.

JQBID has also worked with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) to host Ask An Architect—a free personal consultation to discuss ideas for designing and building your own home or renovating your existing one in a strictly no obligation session. This takes place on the Golden Square, as part of the four monthlong Birmingham Love Architecture Festival, which started in June. Jazz fans will also be well catered for when Birmingham Jazz premiere their Jazz Legends Festival, which will feature performances by more than a dozen local and international jazz artists and bands in venues across the Quarter which you will find in the Birmingham Jazz programme. Guided tours will give you the chance to learn about the history of this fascinating area, while beer lovers can enjoy our CAMRA-endorsed Real Ale Trail. Lastly, if you haven’t already visited any museums in the JQ , then what better excuse do you need?! So read this programme and ask our volunteers if you need any help or guidance. Enjoy!

2 St Pauls Church St Pauls Square

4 Brook Street (Off St Pauls Square) The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) is an artist-led charity which supports artists and promotes engagement with the visual arts. A remarkable museum that tells the story of the Jewellery Quarter and Birmingham’s renowned jewellery and metalworking heritage.

A unique adventure where visitors can travel around the world to discover the history and culture of trains and planes from many different countries.

Newman Brothers Coffin Works

The Pen Museum Learn all about Birmingham’s part in the information revolution at the Pen Museum. There are plenty of activities for families including a Victorian school room, special museum trails and interactive machines.

People of all ages can have fun while learning about the Impressionists, why railways were invented and how a plane flies. There are also flight simulators where visitors can control anything from a single-engined Cessna up to a 747 with systems used by professional pilots. If you prefer to keep your feet closer to the ground, test your driving skills on a four-lane professional car racing circuit. A cinema, coffee shop and one of Birmingham’s biggest model shops complete the offering.

With machinery working and its unusual products – coffin handles, coffin plates, coffin linings and shrouds – on display in the workshops and store rooms. There will be lots of ‘hands on’ activities for all ages, and a range of special exhibitions and events throughout the year. The Grade II* listed factory was built in 1894 when Queen Victoria was still on the throne and funerals were big business, when the factory finally closed its doors in 1999, the staff left almost everything behind as if it were the end of an ordinary working day.

RBSA Gallery

Warstone Lane Cemeteries Unearth the history of the cemeteries and their notable residents such as Joseph Chamberlain MP and Marie Bethell Beauclerc, the first female reporter in England, at Key Hill Cemetery and radical politician Joseph Allday at Warstone Lane Cemetery. The cemetery opened in 1836 and the first interment in the Church of England Cemetery in Warstone Lane took place in August 1848. The memorial chapel, dedicated to St. Michael, was used for divine worship from 1854 to 1878 before being demolished in 1953. The chapel stood above a semi-circular range of catacombs where people such as typographer John Baskerville and Major ‘Harry’ Gem – cofounder of lawn tennis – are buried.

Situated over three floors, the exhibitions are ever-changing, so there is sure to be something new to admire each time you visit. Opened in 2002, the gallery has steadily grown to what is now the largest collection of licensed album cover art in the world. Album art from bands including Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, David Bowie and The Beatles is displayed on the various white wall gallery spaces, each print signed by the original artist who created the work all those years ago.

Two Towers Brewery is the largest and longest established brewery in Birmingham. We were founded in 2010 and have a ten brewer’s barrel capacity Our brewery has a bar which is open on Friday nights, in which we hold regular comedy, spoken word and music events. We host regular brewery tours during which we explain the background of the brewery and our ales as well as covering the brewing process. On our tour our visitors get the equivalent of four half ’s of ale, meaning you can literally get a ‘true flavour’ of what we do here.

Working in association with BrumYumYum, the organisers of the hugely successful KingshEATh Street Market, the JQBID invite you to sample the delights of Birmingham’s independent food and drink scene on the Golden Square. From home made pizza to vegan, there is something to tantalise any taste bud. An arts & crafts aspect organised by the Three Thinking Collective will be joining us from 4 – 8pm with locally produced, hand crafted goods.

The StrEATmarket is back once more on the Golden Square, serving up culinary delights from all around the Jewellery Quarter from a Caribbean Barbeque to rustic, home cooked Pizza with alcoholic beverages and soft drinks also available. So come down for lunch or for an after work treat to ease yourself into the weekend in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
