GAY PRIDE PARADE PROJECT 2010 LA PAZ - BOLIVIA

LA PAZ, BOLIVIA La Paz is the seat of government (executive and legislative branches) of Bolivia and capital of the La Paz Department. The 2011 census reported a population of 1,552,156 in the entire La Paz metropolitan area including the city of El Alto. The center of the city is approx. 3650 meters above sea level and forms, together with the city of El Alto, the largest and most populated urban center in Bolivia.

ADESPROC LIBERTAD GLBT In this context, ADESPROC LIBERTAD GLBT, with more than thirteen years working on behalf of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community, is the largest institution in the country that promotes human rights with a GLBT focus. The constant aggression stemming from certain institutions within the country and society itself has contributed to ADESPROC LIBERTAD GLBT’s gaining greater emphasis defending human rights and the personal integrity and growth of La Paz and Bolivia’s gay and lesbian community.

GAY PRIDE PARADE, SCOPE OF PROJECT The gay pride parade has taken place annually in La Paz since 2001 and has gradually grown in the number of participants as well as spectators. However, for social reasons it is still very difficult to count on the participation of members of the GLBT community that do not hide behind masks, costumes, or intentionally excessive make-up. By showing only one facet of sexual and gender diversity, the general population is presented with an image that is difficult to understand and results in creating negative stereotypes.

In 2009 the number of spectators attending the gay pride parade was estimated to be 4000 while the parade itself included hundreds of GLBT participants representing organizations that work in the field of human rights. This project seeks to encourage the GLBT population to celebrate gay pride day freely and without masks. It intends to celebrate together with GLBT activists who have in past years participated in an important way promoting sexual and gender diversity and whose everyday actions have made a social and legal difference. We believe in the importance of saying “Job well done! to all activists that do not hide their identity and that struggle for equal rights for the GLBT community in Bolivia with such simple but difficult acts as demonstrating the integrity and pride of being gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals, and transgender every day of the year before a conservative and prejudiced society. The gay pride parade is an ideal occasion for demonstrating our gratefulness to this small but valuable group of persons.

Moreover, we believe in the authenticity of these persons. They are the best example offered to many youths and adults for putting an end to stereotypes and prejudice and showing not only sexual and generic, but also natural and cultural diversity. Sexual and gender diversities are realities present in all of human society where differences are more than just simple skin color, but qualities that create authenticity in each individual.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE With the precedent of a small group of around twelve persons that successfully participated in the 2009 gay pride parade with the objective of demonstrating one more facet of sexual and gender diversity while, at the same time, sending an important political message, this year we seek to create a group of 50 persons open to participating without hiding behind masks and costumes. At the same time, we intend to celebrate their valor and pride. The project

Around twelve people made up of non-transvestite gay men represented a group of “recently married gays” who participated primarily without masks and who received a very positive reaction from the viewing public.

seeks to finance the donation of T-shirts and caps for all participants with this year’s slogan: “AUTHENTICALLY DIVERSE PEOPLE”. The project intends to show a group of everyday people, youths and adults, men and women, able to represent average people to hundreds of Bolivians who still live in the closet and who need to see that sexual and gender diversity is a diversity that is, above all, natural and impossible to stereotype.
