IMPERIALISM = a policy where stronger nations exert control on weaker ones Europe tried to take pieces & parts of Africa; Japan went after China.
America liked expanding‌ (recall Manifest Destiny) 3 forces drove America to spread its influence:
ECONOMIC COMPETITION = US in need of new markets MILITARY COMPETITION = Arthur Thayer Mahan argued a big navy made you great RACIAL SUPERIORITY = Americans believed their way of life was best; a mission to convert everyone to Christianity [Social Darwinism]
Hawaii was important to US since 1790’s Americans LOVED sugar without duty (tax)
McKinley Tariff 1890 put duty (tax) on sugar Sugar growers wanted HI as US territory Jan. 16, 1893 – Sanford Dole helped revolt that took over Hawaii

1) Spanish diplomat De Lôme wrote a note critical of US President McKinley
2) February 15, 1898: the USS Maine blew up (260/350 dead) Americans cry out: “Remember the Maine!”; we go to war
Teddy Roosevelt (future President) sent the US Navy to the Philippines
Rebel leader Emilio Aguinaldo & his forces HELP the US
US Navy was powerful; the US Army was NOT Teddy Roosevelt and his “Rough Riders” fought in Cuba Most famous victory for the Rough Riders was San Juan Hill Outcome Cuba free, US gets Puerto Rico & Guam; pay for Philippines
