DOCUMENTATION INTENT ANTICIPATING THIS TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY, I KEENLY UNDERSTOOD THAT IT WOULD BE A SIGNIFICANT EVENT IN MY LIFETIME.

EVEN IF I

WERE TO RETURN TO SHANGHAI, CHINA AT A FUTURE DATE, CONDITIONS ARE GUARENTEED TO BE UNLIKE WHAT I WOULD EXPERIENCE NOW IN 2010. FOR THIS REASON, I CALCULATED A PLAN OF DOCUMENTATION WHICH INCLUDED A GATHERING OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND ARTIFACTS THROUGHOUT THE TRIP.

THE AIM OF MY EXHIBITION ACHIEVES

FOUR SIGNIFICANT OBJECTIVES, ALL OF WHICH ACT TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE TIME AND MONEY INVESTED IN THIS TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY. FIRST IN TERMS OF DOCUMENTATION, I USED PHOTOGRAPHY AS A REPRODUCIBLE MEDIUM TO DISTILL MY EXPERIENCE IN SHANGHAI. SECOND, THE ORGANIZATION OF THESE IMAGES AND ARTIFACTS INTO A COMPREHENSIVE SEQUENCE AIDS IN SHARING THE EXPERIENCE. THE THIRD AND FOURTH COMPONENTS ASSIST MY MEMORY IN DISTILLING A RECOLLECTION OF THE EXPERIENCE. REVIEWING THE IMAGES RECALLS MINOR OR UN-ACCENTUATED DETAILS ABOUT THE TRIP IN MY MIND. FINALLY THE FOURTH COMPONENT, THE COMPILATION OF MY EXPERIENCE BECOMES A TOOL FOR ME TO ACKNOWLEDGE FACETS OF THE CITY I MISSED BECAUSE OF THE SPEED OF THE VISIT. THE MOST INTRIGUING IMAGES OFTEN INCLUDE INITIALLY UNNOTICED DETAILS. MY REASONING FOR GOING WAS TO DELVE INTO A CULTURE I KNEW VERY LITTLE ABOUT. AT THAT RATE, WHAT I THOUGHT I KNEW WAS ONLY SUPERFICIAL AND CAME FROM UNRELIABLE SOURCES.

THROUGH SCAN

AND PHOTOGRAPHY, MY GOAL IN PRESENTING THIS CATALOG IS TO SHARE THE OPPORTUNITY WITH PEOPLE THAT MAY NEVER PERSONALLY EXPERIENCE TH DEEP EAST, ESPECIALLY SHANGHAI, CHINA AS I SAW IT.

SHANGHAI STUDIO|APPLICATION THE FIRST COMPONENT TO THE STUDIO WAS AN APPLICATION FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY ABROAD. CERTAINLY THERE WAS AN ENTHUSIASM FOR INVOLVEMENT SINCE THE STUDIO INCLUDED A TRAVEL PORTION. BECAUSE OF THIS, A LEVEL OF COMPETITION IN THE STUDIO WAS INITIATED MORE THAN A MONTH PRIOR TO THE EFFECTIVE QUARTER. AS A SUPPLEMENT TO THE ANTICIPATED TRAVEL AND STUDIO, PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS MET ONCE A WEEK TO RESEARCH AND DISCUSS THE REALITIES OF THE CITY AND ITS COMPONENTS, INCLUDING HISTORY AND CULTURE.

DOCUMENTATION INTENT THIS OPPORTUNITY WAS AFFORDED TO US AS A MEANS TO EXPERIENCE A NEW CULTURE, ITS TOOLS, SYSTEMS AND OPERATIONS. WE RETURNED FROM SPRING BREAK TO DIGEST, INTERPRET AND APPLY OUR NEW UNDERSTANDING TO AN ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO. AS A MEANS OF DIGESTING THE REALITIES OF SHANGHAI, WE WERE CHALLENGED TO ANTICIPATE A DESIGN THAT WOULD APPEAL BOTH TO TOURISTS (ESSENTIALLY US) AND RESIDENTS (WHO WE SPENT A WEEK WITH). FURTHER THIS PROJECT WAS TO CONCEIVE OF A WATERBORNE SYSTEM ON THE SUZHOU CREEK WHICH PLAYS A MAJOR PHYSICAL ROLE IN THE CITY BUT IS CURRENTLY UNDER-UTILIZED. OUR FACE TO FACE STUDY OF THE PROPOSED SITE (SUZHOU CREEK) AND ITS GREATER CONTEXT (SHANGHAI) GENERATED AN AWARENESS BEYOND DIMENSION AND CONTENT. A DESIGN WITH INTEGRITY TO ITS LOCALE. A PROPOSAL WHICH INTEGRATES ITSELF INTO AN EXISTING NETWORK USING THE SAME LANGUAGE WITH NEW TECHNIQUES AND ULTIMATELY FUNCTIONAL EFFECTS.
