TIPS FOR 6TH GRADERS

Dear Future 6th Grader, The transition from elementary to middle school represents a leap from childhood to young adulthood. This move often creates anxiety and fear for students and parents alike. Several McCool current 6th graders took time from their busy days to offer insightful advice for rising 5th graders to help ease their fears and enhance their Middle School success.

RESPONSIBILITY

Giada P. writes – “The first main aspect of middle school is responsibility. This means turning in work on time, following the late work policy, and staying out of trouble, in school and out. In order to maintain good grades and get awards like high honors and Principal’s List, you must turn in your work on time and completed… Even if you’re tempted to play video games or play with a friend, always do so after you’ve completed your work.”

TIME MANAGEMENT

Sophia G. offers important advice regarding time management “Time management is so important for all classes. Homework, quizzes, tests, and even notes can take a toll on you if you don’t manage your time after or even during school. You may be tempted to hang out with friends and that is perfectly fineAFTER you finish your studying or homework. Even if I sound like a mom in these statements, all the statements are true and what I have done for solutions work.”

TEACHERS

Sophia F. recognizes the value of effective teacher-student relationships – “When I first met the teachers I didn’t know what to expect, and I didn’t think that I would remember my schedule and all of their names. As I got to know them a little more I realized that if you just behave and listen to what they are telling you, they are super fun and make you feel very welcome in the classroom. They are always there for you and you shouldn’t be afraid to ask them for help. You might also probably be thinking that it is going to be so boring in the class,

but the teachers make little games out of the lesson so that you will enjoy yourself and be able to learn the lesson without falling asleep."

FRIENDS

“Drama is a big thing in 6th grade as well- your responsibility is to overcome the drama and be yourself because that is what you’re good at. And remember, no one should be making you feel bad about yourself even if it is your “friend”, everyone needs to take care of each other and bring others up” says Sophia G. Makenna K. adds that “Making friends is fun, try to make new friends in or above your grade and step out of your comfort zone.”

LOCKERS, BINDERS, AND SUPPLIES

Kelsey B. knows the tools needed for success – “People have a hard time figuring out how to unlock their lockers, so on the first day of school take it home and PRACTICE! Ask a parent to help you so you will be ready for the rest of the school year. Use one binder for all of your classes. It makes life so much easier because it holds all your stuff (and you are going to have a lot of stuff). At the beginning of the year you will receive a list of things to get and make sure you get ALL OF IT (trust me, you will need it).”

Perhaps Sophia F. sums it up best with “If you are panicking, don’t worry because we are here for you and if you ever need advice ask me or the teachers”. Giada P. adds, “You may be really excited, or really nervous, but trust me, there’s nothing to worry about. Middle school opens up so many opportunities…” McCool Middle School and Andersen Middle School are looking forward to welcoming our new 6th graders this Fall. 5

SUMMER SLIDE PREVENTION Each year when students come back to school it takes them a little while to get back into the swing of things and to perform at the level they were working at prior to the vacation. Educators call this the summer slide. This is very natural for all of us. The best way to minimize that loss is to keep students engaged over the summer. Maintain a schedule and have students read, write, and engage in mathematics each day. Reunion adjustment Sibling and parent – child communication Behavioral concerns Fear, grief and loss Daily life issues

MFLCs engage in activities with children, assist staff in setting boundaries, provide direct intervention, facilitate groups, and conduct various parent and staff trainings. Let your child build resiliency and life skills with a trusted individual who understands. Schedule a one-on-one session with a Military and Family Life Counselor before your next deployment or PCS.

Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) are licensed professionals with Master’s Degree or higher who provide shortterm, non-medical, problem solving support to military children and families. MFLCs understand the issues military children and families face and can be especially helpful during challenging periods, including deployments and PCS moves. Services are available at no cost and augment existing military support services. Services are private and conversations stay between the child and the MFLC or between the parent and the MFLC. The only exceptions to this rule are cases of domestic violence, abuse, and suicidal or homicidal issues.

LOCATIONS AND CONTACTS: MFLCs are located at the Naval Base Guam and Andersen Child and Youth Programs (CYP), and at McCool Elementary/Middle School, Andersen Elementary School, Andersen Middle School and Guam High School. Contact the CYP or School office to ask to speak with the Military and Family Life Counselor at these locations.

TOPICS COVERED: • School Adjustment • Deployment and Separation

NJROTC PANTHER COMPANY ENCOURAGES NEW STUDENTS TO JOIN THE PROGRAM Written by Guam High School Cadet Chief Petty Officer Jewel Maigue.

In preparation for the upcoming school year, the Guam High School NJROTC Panther Company encourages new students to join the program to help them become well-rounded citizens, both on and off campus. NJROTC not only teaches students military practicalities, but also helps involve them within the school and community. Throughout the year, cadets will participate in countless community service and participation events. Some of these events include home-game concession stands, color guard, night flea markets in Mangilao, car washes, and beach and street clean-ups.

to earn ribbons, medals, and many other military uniform decorations if they meet the requirements and show effort into the company. Cadet Chief Petty Officer Michael Maxey believes that “cadets should join NJROTC because it is genuinely fun and easy if you work hard. They’ll gain maturity and knowledge on why we wear the uniform and what it means for our country. Not everyone can wear the nation’s cloth, and it is a privilege to wear it.”

“It’s very important for cadets to participate in NJROTC events and activities because they’re the face and the future leaders of this company. Everything we do, such as community service events or competition are all seen by the public. The company’s reputation relies on the motivation and effort these cadets put in and it shows,” said Cadet Lieutenant Ivan Luna.

Occasions to bond with fellow cadets often come during the school year. Students can attend the annual Military Ball to enjoy a formal dinner with their friends, or compete with other companies in field games and academic challenges at the Father Duenas Field Event. The NJROTC Panther Company also participates in FarEast, which is a DoDEA-sponsored schedule of events where students from Area 13 (Guam, Japan, and South Korea) can meet, share common interests, and compete to win awards. NJROTC Far East events include drill and marksmanship.

Alongside involvement, cadets will develop responsibility during their years of naval science instruction. They will learn to take care of their uniform, understand the customs and courtesies of the U.S. Navy, and experience proper promotions after meeting company requirements. Cadets will also be able

With many opportunities to explore military careers, develop good citizenship, and become involved with their surroundings, the NJROTC Panther Company is the perfect program for students who aspire to better themselves, their community, and the future of the nation.

The NSA Andersen Youth Sports and Fitness Program conducted the Start Smart Baseball Program from April to May 2019. Start Smart is a Parent– child group which performs motor skill tasks that gradually build confidence in children while they are having fun at the same time. Each Start Smart Program utilizes the Start Smart Program Readiness Test to help parents objectively measure kids’ abilities. As the program progresses and children show improvement, the skills and exercises are altered so that each child remains challenged. Parents spend quality time together with their child while learning how to properly teach and support them in the sport of football. Start Smart participants will develop proper motor skills that will allow them to enjoy and succeed in their youth sports future! At the last session, each child were presented with participation medals for their hard work and dedication. 15
