WHO IS WHO Mathias Babbel Head of Exclusive Customer Advisory and Order Management. Responsible for exclusive customer advice and the BMW Individual Manufaktur portfolio since 2016. BMW M Magazine: Mathias, what’s been the most special project you’ve worked on? Mathias Babbel: The development of the BMW Individual M850i NIGHT SKY, about whose development I could write a small book. The key here was that it was a collaborative project across all departments and people were so enthusiastic that everyone was willing to go the extra mile. Some of its design elements were not included in the original concept and were added during the development phase, like the enormously elaborate headliner – hand-sewn in our factory – or the paintwork that was applied to the vehicle during the factory holidays in Dingolfing. Administrative departments such as purchasing and development pushed themselves to their limits in order to create this beautiful vehicle. Ultimately, it was a team building project that showed what we are capable of when everyone pulls together and is united in one purpose.

The super sedan meets Godzilla on a foggy day at the track We don’t need to hide that - here at Motor1.com, we are all fans of the latest generation BMW M5. We even like to call it a “crossover” because it looks like a sedan for the whole family but drives like a supercar. Meanwhile, we have the utmost respect for the aging Nissan GT-R as well, and that’s why we are excited to share a new drag video between the two. It comes courtesy of Bulgaria’s DizzyRiders channel on YouTube and, unfortunately, the clip currently lacks subtitles in English. The first part of the video provides detailed information about the two cars but you can skip that as the actual show starts at the 13:20-minute mark. The first run is with the launch control function deactivated on both cars and it’s very important to note that both the M5 Competition and the GT-R ride on winter tires. The results speak for themselves - the M5 hits the ¼-mile mark in 11.42 seconds, while the GT-R gets behind with a time of 11.65 seconds. The 0 to 62 miles per hour (0-100 kilometers per hour) acceleration takes 3.61 seconds and 3.8 seconds for the M5 and the GT-R, respectively. The DizzyRiders team did the same race one more time and registered slightly better times but the outcome was unchanged. For the second series of runs, the launch control is engaged in both cars. Naturally, this leads to even better times and the winner of the drag race achieves a 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) time of just 2.93 seconds with a ¼-mile time of 10.82 seconds. Finally, there’s a rolling-start race at 37 mph (60 kph) but make sure to watch the video at the top of this page to learn which car is faster

BMW unveils XS sprayed in vantablack, the world's ‘blackest black’ BMW has unveiled a one-off X6 SUV which has been sprayed with vantablack VBx2 – the ‘blackest black’ paint possible. surfaces painted with vantablack lose their defining features to the human eye, making objects appear two-dimensional. the BMW X6 is the first and only vehicle in the world to feature a vantablack VBx2 paint finish. the exclusive show car is the result of a collaboration between BMW and surrey nanosystems, the inventors of the vantablack technology. the BMW X6 was coated in the VBx2 variant initially developed for use in architectural and scientific applications. this coating can be sprayed on and has a one-per-cent total hemispherical reflectance (THR), meaning it is still considered “super black” while enabling a small amount of reflection from every angle.

vantablack was first developed for the aerospace applications. it contains an acronym of the technology enabling this superior black in its first two syllables, which stand for vertically aligned nano tube array, a matrix made out of carbon. each of these carbon nanotubes has a length of 14 to 50 micrometres, with a diameter of 20 nanometres, making it around 5,000 times thinner than a human hair. as a result, around a billion of these vertically aligned carbon nanotubes fit into one square centimetre. any light striking this surface is almost completely absorbed rather than reflected, and effectively converted into heat the VBx6 vantablack will have its world premiere at the 2019 frankfurt motor show, from 12 to 22 september 2019

THE POWER OF ATTRACTION. For the BMW Vision M NEXT, the BMW design team turned to the iconic BMW Turbo and the groundbreaking BMW i8 for inspiration. In line with the new BMW design strategy, the BMW Vision M NEXT exudes a powerful character with its sporty proportions and the presence of just a few, crisp lines.

BOOST+ The Power-PHEV drive of the BMW Vision M NEXT allows the driver to choose between four electrically driven wheels or a purist rearwheel drive – purely electrically or accelerated by turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine. A system output of 441kW (600 hp) permits a top speed of up to 300 km/h and catapults the BMW Vision M NEXT from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds. The range in purely electric driving mode extends up to 100 km – in most cases this is sufficient to cover a large proportion of journeys purely electrically. Consequently, the BMW Vision M NEXT is also a future-proof sports car for inner cities with potential zero-emissions zones.

SHEER DRIVING PLEASURE REDEFINED. The BMW Vision M NEXT shows the next step of the typical BMW driver orientation. The entire interior focuses on the BOOST Pod. Geometry is consciously restrained so that the driver can concentrate completely on the driving experience.
