FSR Suspension
FULLY ACTIVE, FULLY INDEPENDENT We blazed the trail in fully active, fully independent suspension, and have been refining it ever since. FSR technology delivers more comfort, control and efficiency than any other suspension design, by effectively isolating chain and brake loads. Through our nearly 20-year progression of FSR we’ve been able to tune the ride to match the experience. The result: The same FSR technology that Jaroslav Kulhavy used racing the S-Works Epic to the 2011 XC World Championship—Troy Brosnan used aboard his Demo 8 to capture another Downhill World title.
Comfort, Control, Efficiency
LOCATION. LOCATION. LOCATION. The heart of our FSR suspension is the two chainstay FSR pivots. By modifying the FSR pivot location we can tune the bike’s desired spring rate and performance to match the desired experience.

Active suspension is free to absorb trail-induced forces so the rider’s body doesn’t have to. Maximum traction means greater control The FSR design is independent of chain and brake forces, therefore it’s free to compress and rebound over terrain features whether you’re pedaling or not; allowing the tires to maintain contact with the ground a greater percentage of the time. Maximizing each rotation of the cranks is the key to riding efficiently Chain torque won’t engage the suspension, so as a rider puts effort into the pedals the bike will propel forward, not up and down.

We keep our chainstays short on all our 29er frames, so the rear triangle remains stiff for a responsive ride. We also use shorter, tapered head tubes to keep the front end low for agile and controlled handling.

“I’ve been fortunate to see the evolution of the Epic every step of the way. In 1997, I was doing some World Cup and NORBA National races on our Max Backbone, four-bar linkage Stumpjumper, but, to be to be competitive I had to pump up the shock to the point where it was not responsive in rough terrain. With that setup, myself and other team riders felt full-suspension bikes were too inefficient for elite-level XC racing. Our Director of Suspension Technology Mike McAndrews came up with the idea of incorporating position sensitive inertia valve damping to make a full-suspension bike pedal like a hardtail, but utilize full travel on the descents, and the Epic and its Brain shock were born. Since its launch in 2003, we’ve been making the Epic lighter and improving the performance of the Brain shock. We’ve added Brain Fade adjustment for fine-tuning, increased the travel to 100mm, made the frame stiffer, lighter and perfected the geos for both 26-inch and 29er versions. Over the years, our cross-country team has continued to push the product managers and engineers to improve on what was already the fastest XC full-suspension bike in existence. “Our goal for the Dissident was to make a helmet 100 grams lighter and more ventilated than the current leading model, plus exceed all of the consumer safety standards associated with downhill bicycle helmets. I was responsible for the shape of the helmet as well as how it fit rider’s heads including selection of fabrics and densities of comfort padding foam. I also did the majority of the product development working closely with our carbon fiber facility to make sure the project came together as we’d envisioned it. We designed the Dissident to be compatible with neck braces and the Shock Doctor Eject helmet removal system that is currently mandatory in AMA Supercross and Motocross. The Dissident is more compatible than any other helmet on the market, complete with routing for the inflation tubing. “While we were developing the helmet, we also wanted to make it as safe as possible for when the helmet needed to be removed by medical personnel. To accomplish this, we developed a proprietary snap-in/slide out system to allow the cheekpads to be removed while the rider is still wearing it. Our system works very well, and doesn’t have the weight and cost penalties of using other methods to keep pads in place. In addition to premium safety and comfort, to make the Dissident the total package of performance and style we incorporated the guidance of Senior Graphic Designer, Alain Lanusse, to oversee the attention to the aesthetic design.
